"What should I call you?" she asked. "Do you have a name?"
"You know, I honestly rather like Traveler! It's aspirational. One day I'll have to thank Mr. Harbargain for the idea." The gearling began pacing around, stretching its arms and legs. Was stretching actually useful for it? Or was it a habit it had picked up watching the people of Crossport? Melanie wondered if she'd ever get used to how strangely human the automaton seemed.
"All right... Traveler," she said. "And... well, pardon me if this is rude, but are you a boy or a girl gearling?"
Traveler raised a finger to its mask, tapping contemplatively where a human's lips might be. "Ah! Hm. I honestly hadn't thought of it," the gearling said. "Must I be one or the other?"
Melanie shook her head. "Not at all. Harle, the baker's apprentice Mrs. Harbargain buys our bread from, goes by they."
"Still, it seems very human."
"Which you... don't consider yourself to be?"
"Oh, not at all! There's a difference between humans and people, you know. Humans are bipedal primates. A person is more difficult to define, but let's start by saying it's a thinking individual. I consider myself a proud member of the second category, but merely a baffled witness to the first."
The gearling stopped pacing for the first time since Melanie had agreed to the journey, turning toward her with a whir. "Very well Let's go with he for now. May I change my mind later?"
"Sure!" Melanie said with a laugh. "Some people do."
