Aiden Wilson Tozer was an American evangelical pastor, speaker, writer, and editor. After coming to Christ at the age of seventeen, Tozer found his way into the Christian & Missionary Alliance denomination where he served for over forty years. In 1950, he was appointed by the denomination's General Council to be the editor of "The Alliance Witness" (now "Alliance Life").
Born into poverty in western Pennsylvania in 1897, Tozer died in May 1963 a self-educated man who had taught himself what he missed in high school and college due to his home situation. Though he wrote many books, two of them, "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy" are widely considered to be classics.
A.W. Tozer and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, had seven children, six boys and one girl.
Page 129 We must give ourselves to prayer that goes beyond just the mumbling of certain words. I believe all prayer begins with words-but it does not end there. There comes a time when our prayer transitions to something other than mere words, and we come into the Mysterium Tremendum of God’s presence. I am speaking of that reverential awe of entering into His manifest presence and basking in the sunlight of His pleasure. We have not truly prayed until we have broken through the mystic veil and entered the manifested presence of the One to whom we are praying. (Wow!)
Starting on page 193 The Problem of Proselytism This is such an important thought. It would be so sad to just say we like God like we like a character on a TV show. We need real connection with God. Not for a show in front of someone else, but when no one is looking, just each of us alone with God, saying things that matter in truth.
Page 211 The Bible’s purpose is not to replace God, but rather to bring us into the manifest presence of God. If we have read the Bible and not encountered the living Word, we have not read the Bible.
Page 212 The Bible is a book to be lived and it can only be lived by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Fantastic! I wanted to highlight the entire thing. Towzer has a way of communicating huge truths in very manageable bite size pieces that allow for growth in the knowledge of the things of God.
Good book! Many of Tozer's sermons are being transcribed from many of his audio recorded sermons. In this book he emphasizes the need for Christians to read the Scriptures and how the Holy Spirit works in our lives through the Scriptures!
Excellent book that I found very encouraging. It is hard for me to believe that this was written at the time it was. It speaks perfectly to our modern culture. This is the third book I have read by Tozer (Knowledge of the Holy and Pursuit of God), and it certainly won't be the last.
