First the bombings… cities crumble… infection spreads… Will is alone. His lakeside neighborhood has become a cemetery, the houses now tombstones.
THE DEAD ARE RISING
Out of the shadows, they creep… the streets, the woods, the lake… Will defends his home, his dogs, his sanctuary—but for how long?
THEIR NUMBERS ARE INCREASING
He must choose—complacency or the unknown… making irrevocable decisions that will lead to escape or demise… Will must overcome the odds and break the confines of…
T.W. Smith is fascinated with what scares people. His love affair with things that go "bump in the night" has spanned five decades, evolving into what he equates as comfort food:
"Some people crave potato chips. Others seek solace in a bowl of ice cream. Give me a comfortable couch and a classic movie like John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN, or a well-worn Stephen King paperback, and I am in heaven. It's my CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL.
After the publication of his short story NOT FAR FROM HERE (in Peter Straub's GHOSTS anthology, 1995), Smith was sidelined into the workforce by familial and financial obligations--resulting in various jobs including a five-year tenure with (the sorely missed) Borders bookstore chain.
His latest book, THE DEAD NEXT DOOR, is an homage to his favorite novel, I AM LEGEND, by Richard Matheson. Instead of vampires, it's zombies--but the motif is still there... what would an average guy do alone in a world of the dead?
T.W. Smith resides in northern Georgia, with his husband, his mother-in-law, and their pets.
So bloody good! I love how Will gets better and better the more he learns survival skills. He's such a great character and I can't wait to see what happens next for him, his new kid Lisa and his beautiful doggos.
Will never thought he'd face the end of the world on his own. His husband, Frank, is out of town for business when the most disturbing video's are being shown on TV. The last time they spoke on the phone Frank was trying to get back home, this has been weeks ago. Will searched the internet and found a manifest written by Brian. He manages to print Brian's words before the power goes out. Will finds great comfort in the useful rules Brian put in his book. This has helped him survive for all this time. Can Will find a way to stay in his safe haven?
Will is mentally unstable and is struggling with OCD. He knows he has to find a new routine to keep himself sane and to get through the days. He has two dogs who help him a lot. With each passing day Will has to re-invent himself. He has to find new ways to get supplies and must also accept the horrible decision to eventually leave the home he shared with Frank. Will has always been a kind and caring man but to be a survivor asks a whole new set of skills. Is Will able to do whatever it takes to stay alive?
The Dead Next Door is a gripping story about a man who's not your typical survivor. I loved the fact that he really needed to evolve as a person in this new world. T.W. Smith created a brilliant new point of view when he chose Will to be his survivor. I was hooked from the very start and couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. Will is not spared throughout the horrors of the zombie apocalypse and this made my heart skip a beat several times.
The Dead Next Door is blood chilling and is the first installment in the Will to Live series. I absolutely can't wait to read the next book. T.W. Smith is an author I will absolutely continue to follow.
I like when a book can quickly capture your attention in a way that doesn't feel cheap or overused. I like a book better when characters are realistic and relatable. Do all that AND be original? Tough to find. Look no further. I didn't have any expectations going into the Dead Next Door and I'm glad. It wasn't what I was expecting for a zompoc story. I didn't expect to relate so well to a character so different from myself. But I also didn't expect so many of my own personal struggles to be in him. This has been one of the most human and interesting stories I've read in a long time and I'm glad I had the opportunity. Solid writing, character development and environment. T.W. Smith has a fantastic future ahead! Just mentioning character development doesn't do the evolution of Will justice. To say more though would deprive you the experience of watching this man grow and evolve. I can't wait to see where we, the readers, get taken next in this world!
I really enjoyed this book, the first in which I hope is a long series. The main character is Will, who is running low of his medicine and is OCD among other issues. Will is trying to cope with his underlying issues and above normal panic attacks. This is an original story told through his eyes and mind. The series is told in a series of flashbacks and the here and now, as Will is reminded he is alone and seemingly the last man on earth. The story is loosely reminds of 'I am Legend.' Repetion and routine help ground Will to the present and he must learn to move on in order to survive. The story starts off slow, in order to set the tone and build past references and characters. I am in awe of how far Will comes in his journey. I can't wait for the next chapters to come! Job well done T.W. Smith!
I feel like I know Frank and Will because of all the little descriptive details about their everyday life. I can see how their personalities compliment each other. I can picture their home, their two dogs, the neighborhood and the path to the lake. I love T.W. Smith’s style of writing and am looking forward to reading more from this author. I appreciate how Will is just an average guy, figuring things out as he goes. This isn’t one of those apocalypse stories filled with minute detail about this gun or that rifle. It’s a character-driven story about how Will is coping with survival on his own while hoping for his husband Frank to make it home from a work trip. Little by little, the old world starts to fade. Grass grows unchecked, the tv and radios stop broadcasting, the power goes out and eventually, so does the water. Will worries about some of the same things I would if this were my life. Things like contact lenses (how long can I really wear disposable lenses?,) dog food, (where can the dog poop if it isn’t safe to go outside? What would I do about the barking?)medication, should I risk bringing a few books along, or would the added weight be dangerous? If you think you’d enjoy a character-driven story about a smart individual (with no military or survival training background,) figuring out how to survive, give this one a try.
Great main character, flawed, human, but learns and survives. I love that Will has his issues but deals with them and, honestly, I can see many people starting their journey into the apocalypse by being obsessive in what they do. Will learns through necessity . I also love that he is a dog owner who figures out how to make it work. He changes himself without losing himself. Can't wait to read the next book. I received a free ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
I absolutely loved it. Great read! Had my heart racing, laughed at the mental health side as it was so relateable. Lovely storyline with some awesome plot twists. Couldn't even guess what was coming next! Cannot wait to read more! 😊
I loved this book! It was so well-written and I was engaged with the characters from go. I never do spoilers, but I do like to promote a good book. So, do yourself a favor and grab a copy. You will enjoy it!
Well written, character is interesting and relatable. I genuinely found this a great book and look forward to reading the future books from this author.
A fresh take on the zompoc genre, this book gives you a glimpse into what it would be like to be alone when the world turns upside down. The protagonist is well written. He is a man without survival training, an average person in a decidedly non average world. His struggles and triumphs in the outside world are a wonderful counterpoint to his internal battles with mental illness. Cant wait to read the next book in the series!
What an excellent read!!! Will is who we all are in some shape or form. He has lost the most important person in his life and has to figure things out on his own. No everyone going through a zombie apocalypse will become part of a big group or even a small group. Will is doing it all on his own, well, with a little help from his friend Brian. The story has it all. You see the MC grow, you get the action and gore we all love in this genre. You get some twists, good ones, bad ones and a really awesome one, but I'll let you read it to find that one out. Now I eagerly await book 2.
.....fantastic book by T.W. Smith!!!! Lots of excitement and a big difference than other apocalyptic books. The characters are well described and the storyline is just great!!!!
Somehow I found this book and I am so glad I did. Will he survive, but most important, will his 2 adorable dogs survive??? I could not stop reading this book. It is riveting, seeing this ordinary guy trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. I was gasping and literally on the edgeof my seat so many times!
I wasn't for sure if i would like this. It started out slow for me and the jumping back to the passed and future. After it stopped it picked up and it was truly amazing read! I can't wait to read more about will and Lisa journey.
Got off to a slow start, but picked up steam. The thing about zombie novels is that they can all be the same. However, this one depicted an gay character, which I don’t have a problem with (some might). He just should not have depicted Will as weak, but that being said he is a survivor and what’s important is that he is able to adapt unselfishly. Overall, at times I felt the story was predictable, but then it would turn a corner and leave me smiling. I love that Hank (racist) got done in by his own stupidness. Most do! Definitely worth the read.
This was a satisfying read. Good zombie action, tense moments, and a sinister subplot that I'm really curious about. Will is alone while his husband Frank is traveling for business. Unfortunately for him and their two dogs... Frank doesn't make it home (right away) after an outbreak turns people into monsters of the zombie variety. Will is a relatable protagonist. He is not only dealing with zombies, his dogs, and a decreasing ration supply. He's dealing with what he knows to be the loss of his partner in life. This is all while coping with mental illness. I liked reading as he becomes more resourceful and self sufficient. He evolves from meek and almost helpless to diabolical in some ways. He does this while trying to keep his core values intact (as well as he can in the apocalypse). I hope he finds his friend. The ending was promising. But I am also hoping that we find out what the red X's on the doors meant. Can't wait for the next one.
Just FYI I rate higher for kindle unlimited bc my expectations are lower, but if I’d bought this book outright (if it was $8 or under), I’d have def felt like it was worth it. I like a lot about this book. I like the MC was a middle aged gay man who ate the s out of shape. He didn’t know all the answers and wasn’t some souped up ramboesque ex military “alpha male”. I liked he had issues with preexisting mental healths issues. I also have OCD and anxiety so I could relate. I liked the portrayal of his fight between survival and compassion. I just liked it and hope the next installment is at least as good.
From the first chapter I was terrified. The author created an atmosphere throughout the book which I found scary and tense. There was moments where I actually needed to stop reading.
This book is about the main character surviving the Zombie Apocalypse more or less alone whilst battling mental health issues. I didn’t think that he would survive without someone else. This book was more then the bog standard Zompoc novel~the author dealt with raw emotions and issues that are not often written about in this genre.
Would I read the sequel? Most definitely. I really enjoyed reading this book.
First time reading this author but will not be my last! This book starts out kinda slow but thank goodness I stuck with it. Once the book took off and got over talking about his mental illness the story seemed to pick up with non stop action. Will is an average person with no knowledge of how to survive this out break. He learns quickly and I can not wait to see how this series develops. I recommend this series to anyone looking for a new take on zombie books. I loved the new characters that were introduced in this book. Oh yeah and I love the dogs. Get the book and then leave your review. Thank you for using Kindle Unlimited.
This is not your typical zombie apocalypse story. The character is a really well developed and really likeable. The story kept me interested and I didn't want to put it down. The story is told chronicling one man's experience and not much on the world outside of the character's neighborhood . I'm really looking forward to see how his journey changes , and to see this character develops when he's interacting with other people. So far he has mostly been solitary , with the exception of his digs. Great story , definitely worth the dead
Excellent take on a zombie story. Interesting character who grows a lot during course of the book. Lovely dog characters which for those who like to know in advance I always stress about that. And the Afterward says Will's journey will continue. Eager for the next book.
Good ending for this book. I had a hard time with Will's delusion's and what was reality for a while. I like it when Lisa came alone. There was a lot of Zombie action which was great. I gave it a four star because of not following delusions and reality and it took up most of the book. Very wordy.
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this or not, but there is more depth to this protagonist than perhaps any other apocalypse novel I've read yet. And just as important, there is more growth than most characters of any genre.
At the beginning I was thinking, "This guy ain't gonna make it." Halfway through I was rooting for him to succeed. Well done. NO BRING ON BOOK TWO!
This is a well paced and interesting story .. I love that Will is so ill prepared for the new world ... and watching him grow, evolve and overcome is fantastic .... I hope your huddled over your keyboard right now ... I want more .....
This guy is NOT a hero, just someone that is trying to stay alive! He must overcome being scared and alone while learning how to survive. This rates as one of the better zombie novels that I have read as it doesn't follow the usual running and gunning theme. On to Book 2...
Thoroughly enjoyed this well-written walk through a zombie invested world. The Dead Next Door has everything an enthusiast of this genre will love: tense, nail-biting scenes, classic zombie-slaying gruesomeness, terrifying tests of endurance and resourcefulness, all while the world falls ever downward to the gnawing horror of the undead. Much like a top-tier Walking Dead episode, The Dead Next Door is exactly what you need when you want that graveyard itch scratched.
More than just that, however, is that it’s such a pleasure to read a book where the hero is a gay guy, where that’s only part of his identity, rather than all of it. Will Rutledge, the main character, is authentically and lovingly written, with realistic traits and characteristics that extend far past just his sexuality. It was fascinating to experience this quickly-falling-apart-world through Will’s eyes and internal dialogue, especially given how he lives with depression, anxiety and OCD, all of which I thought were realistically portrayed as part of the character, and not just a quirk or gimmick to make the character different.
If there is one criticism I could give, it would be that Will benefits from too much good fortune in terms of having everything that’s needed to survive the zombie apocalypse, all conveniently located in his neighbourhood. Everything from having the right melee weapons, to pistols with magical silencers, to Google-fu’ing a zombie survival guide, to finding a treasure trove of perfectly preserved supplies, to finding a cabinet full of ridiculously overpowered munitions … it got a bit much, for me, to the point that it risked breaking the sense of tension and realism the book was otherwise excellent at building.
Still, all of that is easily overlooked in favour of how well the book is written – the text flows, the dialogue is interesting, the characters are authentic, the peril is tangible. And, as a gay guy, the relationship between Will and his Frank seemed genuine to me – realistic, relatable, and accurate, which is a very welcome change of pace for me.
Absolutely give my top recommendation for this book, both for lovers of the zombie apocalypse genre, and a must-read for people who like strong, credible, and believable gay characters portrayed authentically. I’m wonderfully pleased that this is Book 1 and hope that I’ll get to enjoy Book 2 when it’s released!
It wasn't the most exciting ZA novel I've read but it wasn't bad. I really liked Will, and I liked a lot of the retro references in the story. I also thought it was cool that Will is gay cuz you don't see much of that as main characters.
I have to admit, I’ve seen this book advertised for months on my “suggested reading” pages and feeds, but had never picked it up. I don’t get a hankering for a zombie novel that often, but I needed a break from my more normal selections so I decided to try it out.
I really enjoyed this one! It’s a different take than most of the genre. I’m that the MC is not former military, or any sort of trained person. In fact with his near crippling OCD, I would say he could easily be considered one of the worst people to try and stay alive in the circumstances. The atmosphere is tense, and there are several edge of your seat moments as the book goes on, where you aren’t sure what’s coming next.
Will, our MC, is smart, and makes good decisions throughout. Which is a nice change of pace from the characters that make you want to facepalm.
I was a bit miffed about the Southern characterization, but i suppose it’s a stereotype for a reason. It didn’t detract from the book too much, and the humor I found throughout more than made up for some slight annoyance.
Just a heads up to the potential reader: there are a couple of scenes in here where things get a bit graphic. But most of the book isn’t that rough.
