This novel has a really interesting mechanic that ties crafting and a monster capture-ish style of plot narrative that really appeals to me.

There's some really good worldbuilding and a really straightforward no-bullshit story.

A great read

The story has everything it needs to be a great story. The MC isn’t OP yet should be. The making of either a LitRPG or dungeon core story are housed in this first installment and I can’t wait for the next one.

Crap

Not impressed, its obvious the author failed to use a decent spellcheck or confirm the page layout and format after the upload, it should not have been released.

Great Idea

The author has some good general themes, character development and the story is moving okay.
There are editing issues, word choice, and grammar problems but the story still flow well enough.
The concept behind the story is strong enough to continue development.
Worth the read.

Really awesome quick read

I really enjoyed this book. It was a bit short for my tastes, but that's a minor quibble. I really hope for more.

Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of this audiobook free of charge in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

I love books with a novel system and it was with great interest that I came into Essence Weaver, a tale of a boy with the power to absorb not only the pure essence of the world to be used as a catalyst to create but he also has the hitherto unknown power to store the essence of monsters.

With a synopsis as shown above I came here expecting a tale of warring nations, armies of summoned creatures and vast magical constructs but instead I discovered a 5-hour long training montage with an unsatisfying ending which makes this a really hard book to review.

Let's start with what I did like, the system. So all things are made of matter, the ground is made of earth, the sky of air, flames of fire and the rivers of water but it goes deeper than that. All things are made of Essence, the Earth being Earth Essence with a touch of Water, the Rivers are Water Essence with some Air, Flames Fire and Air but maybe also Earth from the fuel; it really is explained much better than I can do justice but the world is made of a whole menagerie of different elemental essences and the Weavers have the ability to harness this.

Weavers are born with an affinity, a Fire Affinity excell at controlling fire and heat and so can absorb this and store it's raw essence inside themselves to be used as batteries of creation. A Fire Weaver for instance could store a Bonfire and launch fireballs at will but Again it goes even deeper! The same Weaver could absorb the heat from a room, freezing the contents or use Fire Essence to make an opponent's weapon too hot to hold or cook them in their armour; the applications are endless.

Unfortunately for Daniel, our protagonist, he has no affinity and as such has a very limited imagination for using the elements, much to his chagrin when you consider his Father is an Ascended FIre Weaver and a war hero while his Grandfather is the Headmaster of the very school he has joined to be trained.

From these extremely promising beginnings we enter a series of training scenes in school and from there a flight into the dark and more training elsewhere before the book ends. This sounds harsh as some of the training scenes are quite interesting but it seems the author has gone to great lengths to highlight how weak Daniel is compared to the other students and the ability to absorb and use monsters is barely seen at all.

Narration-wise, it's ok. Robert Barefoot provides a competent narration but never goes beyond being just average, not because of his own ability but because he really has nothing to work with here and I really hope that he gets some better gigs going forward as he clearly has the chops for more exciting work.

In all, this is a poor first adventure into the world of the Essence Weavers and it really feels like a promotional file of the first ⅓ of a book as literally nothing described in the blurb happens.

I can't do it

I can't do it; I can't finish this. It's just terrible. The initial concept seemed fine enough, but everything else is just awful. The writing is amateurish and incredibly childish. The characters are one-dimensional and just flat-out don't make sense with their actions and responses. Dialogue is blocky and childish. The writing is chock full of formatting, spelling, grammatical, and usage errors. I got 30% through and he hadn't made it out of the school yet. We had covered a singular placement test and that is it; so this book is very short and looks like it will have odd pacing. I'd heard good things about this book and wanted to like it, but it's just terrible.

Somewhere between "I didn't like it" and "it was okay", leaning slightly more towards didn't like it. The entire story is about an incompetent idiot child going on a trip to an asshole grandfather, where they play a couple of "sensei games" (that is, the grandparent doesn't actually teach anything and the kid who is already stupid and ignorant is supposed to pick it up magically because of plot armor) and then the kid has to run away.

That's it. Seriously. That's the entire book.

It kind of sucks.

I picked this up based on a really positive rec on reddit but found instead an unlikable hero, a complete lack of character growth, a disappointing "plot" (if you can even call it that), and a really stupid magic system.

This series has a lot of promise. I liked the magic system, I found it to be very interesting. The only problems I had with this book was that the world building was quite lacking. I felt as though the book, the characters, and narrator didn’t provide me, the reader, with many details of the things the MC came across. I’m not sure if the state of the world building is due to the MC’s sheltered childhood. But hopefully it will change in the next book. The last problem I had with this book was that nothing really happened. There were some trials, a trip, and a break in, aaaannnnddd that was it. I will read the next book but hope the author addresses the problems I found in this book.

Ok but could have been better

This book was one big info dump. From culture to family situation to magic system. In the end it got a little boring. There were only 3 action scenes in the book for heavens sake!
That being said I felt like it has potential. I like the magic system and the cool growth potential. Just wish we got to see more of that. Will probably read the next one.

The most unlikable main character I can remember

I really liked the world and abilities but wished for the main character to die a horrible slow death. A more worthless, whiny, ignorant, lazy, stupid, moronic punk would be hard to find. At least he didn’t murder any small animals.

An okay first half of a book...

But since its an entire book it felt very short and like there was no actual growth for the MC.

Where’s the book?

It’s just chapter titles with a few sentences after each. Maybe a bad ripoff from a different, more popular book?

Cool story

I enjoyed this story. I hope the next one is a bit longer and that it goes a lot more indepth on the magic in this world and how it works.

The plot was very good. The main character, Daniel, was interesting as well as his journey to becoming a full fledged essense weaver. This story was a great read. The story was very descriptive and the world that was created by the author was amazing.

Concept is interesting but execution is meh. I like magic system but there is so much dry info dump. Most irritating thing is characters talk about something in too many sentences.

For example there is a scene where MC is angry at a person because he thinks is lying. Person wants him to look at a shop name to proof something (don't want to write spoiler). It takes half a page for him too look at a shop sign. I know author is trying build up tension but it feels like anime villain monologuing or a high school student trying to hit word count in an essay.
