Be Teachers of Good things

“But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: that the older men be
sober,
reverent,
temperate,
sound in faith,
in love,
in patience;

(Spiritual Mothering)
the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior,
not slanderers,
not given to much wine,
teachers of good things—
that they admonish the young women to love their husbands,
to love their children,
to be discreet,
chaste,
homemakers,
good,
obedient to their own husbands,
that the word of God may not be blasphemed.”
‭‭Titus‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬-‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Avoid Dissensions

“But avoid foolish disputes,
genealogies,
contentions,
and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless.
Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.”
‭‭Titus‬ ‭3‬:‭9‬-‭11‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

This three-chapter book holds a fountain of wisdom and instruction for living a wholesome and faith-filled life of service. Highly recommend!

What a wonderful little book! I love that it contains great instructions for leaders in the community. I’ll be coming back to this one often, to make sure I’m learning what I should.

Read in the NKJV this time! My other read-throughs of Titus have been in the NIV.

Lovely, three-chapter long book! Apostle Paul's letter to Pastor Titus, who was like a son to him, I believe he said. Some more wonderful tidbits. Enjoyed this book, and looking forward to going on to Philemon!

2/24/21: Not much has changed in 2,000 years.

"But avoid useless controversies. genealogies, pointless quarrels, and arguments over the law, which will get you nowhere."
Titus 3:9 (TPT)

I guess it's a good thing the early church didn't have access to social media. What better forum has there ever been for "useless controversies" and "pointless quarrels?"

I also find it interesting that Paul quotes another "pagan" poet in Titus 3:12 (like he did in Acts 17 during his visit to Athens), only this time he does it to slam the opponents of his ministry.

(Ouch!)

Never mess with an apostle who knows his Epimenides, I guess?

6/22/20: Titus continues with many of the themes we see repeated in Paul's other letters. That includes some of his more uncomfortable theologies about relations between men and women.

But I won't go into that here. Instead, I'll elaborate on the following:

"Reject a divisive person after a first and second warning. For you know that such a person has gone astray and is sinning; he is self-condemned."

In these times, when so many seem to consider their particular political and theological viewpoint to be the only valid one, and those who don't immediately jump up to agree with them are EVIL (or at least complicit with it), I'd say Paul's words are as relevant as ever.

Yes, there is absolute truth. There is good and evil. And it's important to be on the right side.

But sometimes our vision of those things isn't as clear as we may think it is.

A short and snappy review for a short and snappy read. ;)
Titus is the last of the Pastoral Epistles. Paul writes again about godly living and our duties as followers of Jesus. From Titus (and the letters to Timothy, too!) we can learn about the qualities a Christian should have, being an "example of good deeds, with purity" (2:7).

Titus is a short read, and so are 1st and 2nd Timothy. Anyone at any level in their faith can read the Pastoral Epistles—my personal favorite is 1 Timothy—and still learn something (or somethings, if that's a word 😄), so I recommend these books to everyone.

Titus is the briefest of Paul's pastoral epistles. Titus enjoyed a close relationship and association with Paul. Titus is dealing with a conflict in his congregation between what he is preaching that Paul has taught him and what the Jewish converts feel is necessary to follow from the Old Testament. Paul in this letter is encouraging Titus to stay true to Jesus' beliefs and resist the disruptive effects of the defective teaching that is being proclaimed by some of his congregation. Yet Titus is encouraged to do this with civility so that noone's feeling will be hurt.

Again, actually read in NIV. Trying to read some of the smaller books I glaze over often, partially for knowledge and partially to pad out the Goodreads eoy book count

I listened to this on my walk this morning and found it so encouraging I listened to it again. Still feeling blessed that God let me chew on these ideas off and on today and strengthened my sagging heart with His beautiful words.

Titus Chapter 1:

Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;

9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:

11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Paul's letter to Titus. This book speaks to humility in the body of Christ. It also speaks of the hope we have through Jesus Christ the Messiah: That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. Bless the name of Jesus!

Merged review:

Titus 1: 1-4 - I have been sent to proclaim faith to* those God has chosen and to teach them to know the truth that shows them how to live godly lives. This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began. And now at just the right time he has revealed this message, which we announce to everyone. It is by the command of God our Savior that I have been entrusted with this work for him. I am writing to Titus, my true son in the faith that we share. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior give you grace and peace.

Bless the name of Jesus!

The book of Titus is the fifty-sixth book in the Bible, and it is the seventeenth book in the New Testament. This book was written by the Apostle Paul after his first imprisonment in Rome, and it was written to a companion of his on his third missionary journey. He was mentioned as being an affectionate and faithful friend.

Titus is a short book that has a heavy focus on the benefits of good doctrine. There are three different summaries in this book on the incarnation of Jesus. Special attention is paid to how good doctrine can encourage and promote good living, in the sense of doing good deeds in the right mindset.

The book of Titus is a short one, but it is one I enjoy reading. The focus on solid doctrine producing right living is a concept I really need to hear right now. While Titus is not my favorite epistle, it contains some good meat that is encouraging to believers of all ages. It might be short, but it is certainly powerful.

I found this work of immense interest and importance.
The compilation of historical accounts, wisdom & proverbial insights, and thought provoking texts, along with descriptive and informative footnotes, are of great value.
Explanations, including varying scholarly views depicting the material related in this book, are available for each of the 66 individual books of the Bible.
This book is but one of the individual 66 books/letters which were written by forty different authors over at least 1500 years in three different languages on three different continents, which comprise the Bible.
Read for life-related reasons and personal research.
Overall, a great resource for the researcher, enthusiast, and devotee.

We read the entire book every day this week, and it has been such a blessing.

Thoughts from Titus:

1:2 God NEVER lies.

1:9 Elders must hold firm to the Bible.

1:16 Our actions show who we truly are.

2:1 We must teach, and, in return, be willing to learn.

2:11 Salvation is available for all people!

2:14 "zealous for good works"

3:1 "remind them"---> we need reminders to be submissive to those in authority

3:4-5 Christ transforms us. The work is done by God not ourselves. Being a Christian means our lives look different than they did before.

3:8 "be careful" to devote yourself to God works

Titus is a short book, just 3 chapters, but it contains a lot of instruction for Titus, and elder under Paul's authority for the island of Crete.

Paul tells Titus how to appoint elders in all the churches of Crete and to fight heresies there and to put out or 'deal with' bad church leaders and influencers. In many ways, the letter is like those of Paul to Timothy.

Titus Review (No Spoilers)

I feel like Titus was another book of the Bible that gave really good advice. It’s advice tells you how to live your daily life. Even though Paul wrote this as a letter to Titus, we can all take something from this book. I reccomend this book to everyone. This book can help anyone in some way. I give Titus 5/5 stars.

MY BIBLE CHALLENGE:
In January 2015 I set myself the challenge to read the complete Bible within a year. I discovered that was an unrealistic challenge, and decided to pick up my Bible as and when I felt ready to read more of it. Here is a link to all the reviews in my Bible challenge so far:

I learnt that I should live what Jesus says so that I can both glorify him but also aid in the spreading of the good news. We must show God's love. I thank you Lord for all this. Thank you that I am saved. I pray that I learn to live this out more- as a follower of You. I love You.
