1 John is often confused with the Gospel of John, and they're very different, despite being by the same author...but they're also both great! John has many inspiring thoughts in this book; every Christian should read it...and live it!
ST. John is my favorite writer in The Bible. His main thrust is love. The love of God is in us so that we must love God and each other. I highly recommend this book to all.
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:18-19 ESV
I John helps you become confident in your faith, dismiss doubts about Gods love for sinners, finding identity in Christ and how to have fellowship with him.
* Love for God * Love for others * Jesus as the Christ * Light vs. Dark * Doctrine
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:8-9
“these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” I John 2:1-2
“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” I John 2:3-6
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” I John 2:15-17
“it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.” I John 2:18
“Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.” I John 2:22
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.” I John 3:1
“Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.” I John 3:4-5
“Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.” I John 3:7
“Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.” I John 3:13
“let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.” I John 3:18
“And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.” I John 3:23
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.” I John 4:1-3
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” I John 4:4
“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” I John 4:7-8
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” I John 5:4
“For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.” I John 5:7-8
“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” I John 5:14-15
“We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.” I John 5:19
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.:
'Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has never been perfected in love"
This book contains SO much beautiful and comforting truth about salvation and Christian life… it all boils down to LOVE, but the right and real kind of Love… love in the Truth.<3
First John speaks to believers about their relationship with God. Loving others, as a reflection of the love of God, grounds a new believer's life because love is an unconscious desire for heaven. And we only know what love is due to the sacrificial love that God has shown us.
John writes a plain and direct letter commanding Christians to love each other and to confess our sins to each other. If we claim to have no sin, then we're liars. John says he heard this command directly from Jesus Himself, who he has seen and touched. That's just the first chapter.
John calls himself 'the disciple whom Jesus loved' in his gospel. Read his letter and find out what kind of minister he was. In his older years, he was the pastor of Ephesus, which is in what is now called Turkey. If you search the internet, you can find a gravestone in the ruins of an Ephesian church with his name upon it.
The three letters with his name are near the end of the New Testament, but they're not the end of his writing. He also wrote the book of Revelation, at Jesus's command.
MY BIBLE CHALLENGE: In January 2015 I set myself the challenge to read the complete Bible within a year. I discovered that was an unrealistic challenge, and decided to pick up my Bible as and when I felt ready to read more of it. Here is a link to all the reviews in my Bible challenge so far:
The reading of God's Word is so remarkable that there is nothing that I can say to make it any better. Please, if you are a lost soul, turn to God! He can heal you and give you the greatest peace that you will ever know!
For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. I John 5:7 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? I John 3:17
"And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This I how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us." - 1 John 4:16-19
Another late first-century forgery pretending to be that of the illiterate (Acts 4:13) fisherman John of Zebedee who could in reality only speak Aramaic and not write in polished Greek.
1 John is one of the best New Testament epistles. The themes are so artfully woven throughout each chapter, and the overarching point that John is driving home is a gut-puncher.
The popular conception of “hell” as a fiery torture chamber, as utterly unpleasant as that sounds, is cartoonish in comparison to the concept of “hell” as separation from our Heavenly Father; not only as something experienced after death, but something we create for ourselves right here in THIS life when we reject the true fulfillment offered by the Father in favor of the world’s vapid substitutes.
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.” — 1 John 2:15-16
1 John was written to confirm Christians in true apostolic Christianity by helping them avoid the destructive beliefs and behaviors that some had fallen into. Some of the members of the local church had left the assembly, apparently because their doctrine, ethics, devotion, etc. conflicted with those of the church, and Jude wrote (at least in part) to help settle and stabilize their situation. He reaffirmed and enlarged on key theological truths, particularly on the person of Christ, and extolled love and emphasized the necessity for belief to be matched by action. True faith, proactive ethics, fervent love for God and people are three principal qualities that John emphasized.
As part of the Scriptures this small book is part of the infallible, inerrant, inspired Word of the Living God. The human author is John the Apostle [Gospel of John, Epistles of John - 1, 2, 3, and the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ]. For a small book it certainly has a lot of information on several important subjects [joy, cleansing, the two natures, eternal security to mention a few]. Always a blessing.

Thy kingdom come. Let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind

The book of First John is the sixty-second book of the Bible, and it is the twenty-third book in the New Testament. Though no author is stated in the text, church tradition states that it was written by the Apostle John. The estimated date of composition is 90 AD during John’s exile on the Isle of Patmos.
First John has a lot of comparisons, such as light vs. dark and Christ vs. Antichrist. This presents a simple way of looking at the world: there is good and there is evil. Despite this, John emphasizes the love of God, stating that though we must judge between good and evil, truth and error, it must always be done with love.
John’s appeals for Christians to be zealous in their faith while standing firm against false teachers is good advice for today’s church. Many Christians are lukewarm or even cold in their walk with God, so zeal would be welcome. False teachers are also prevalent in today’s world. Many people have “itching ears” as was predicted, and they only want to hear certain things, so they find teachers who will tell them those things. John’s admonitions to separate truth from error are just as important now as then. If only we would do it.
And this is what he promised us—eternal life. 1 John 2:25
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 1 John 3:1
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10
We love because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19
And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5:15
