Throwaway Jane

Rate this book
Former FBI agent Karen Pantelli lives by a simple philosophy: never, ever care. Three years after a tragic mistake ends her once-stellar career, she drifts from one dead-end job to another, quickly moving on when she finds herself getting too attached. A new city. A new life. A new way of forgetting and being forgotten.

Until one chilly night behind a seedy bar, when a frightened girl leaps out of the back of a speeding van.

As they end up on the run in a thrilling chase that spans half the country, Karen soon realizes it's much easier to say you don't care than to actually mean it. And that unlocking the secrets in this girl's extraordinary mind might not only save both of them, but bring down one of the most sinister organizations the world has ever known.

Karen Pantelli, a busgirl and former FBI agent, steps out to take a break from her restaurant job and walks into a situation fueled with intrigue and danger. But how could she know that saving a young girl's life would lead to this?

This thriller is responsible for a couple of sleepless nights. The plot gripped me; I had to continue reading until the sun started coming up. Though I found parts of the story difficult to stomach, the characters got to me, causing me to despair for their well-being.

There are triggers in this book (a young sex worker, domestic violence, casual homicides). Reader beware. This is definitely written as a modern hard-boiled thriller.

I found the audible version an engaging, suspenseful story with many twists that kept me guessing. As a bonus, I requested and received a no-strings-attached copy for review and found the story much better than I guessed (based on the blurb). There are parallels to events that made the news in recent years, which added unexpected weight to the story.

I found the main character likable and easy to root for, along with the victim she helped. While the ending resolved the story (no cliffhangers for the next in series) and was ultimately satisfying, it was bittersweet. I pondered the story and its conclusion for days after finishing.

I appreciated a solid narration performance. It was competent and not overdone, allowing me to immerse in the story.

I highly recommend.

Throwaway Jane: A Karen Pantelli Novel was a compelling story. Fast paced, crazy action, and impossible to put down.

Karen is former FBI working in as a barmaid in a ratty, rundown bar when Jane literally falls almost at Karen's feet. Both Karen & Jane have issues, which explain how they both come to be at the back of the bar Karen's working at. They need to work together to save both of their lives. But can they trust each other to work together?

There were two obvious errors which really should have been caught somewhere along the publishing line but weren't. The most distracting one took place in the hotel room. When Karen & Jane walked in, the room was described as having 2 queen sized beds but later the same night in the same room, the beds were suddenly twin sized. That error annoyed me much more than the first error, which just repeated two words back to back in the same sentence. (i.e., like 'he was he was spinning around'.)

I have read other Scott William Carter's books, and like those, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I felt as if I was Karen at times, thanks to Mr. Carter's writing.

I would have rated Throwaway Jane with 5 stars but for the two errors. Both errors forced me to stop and reread again and doing that took me out of the book enough to drop my rating to 4.5 stars. These errors are not enough to stop me from reading more of Mr. Carter's books. He does an excellent job of feeling you and keeping you hooked.

The story had some good pieces to it. I saw some well crafted writing and some pieces I thought that could have been a touch better if the editing had been consistent. Which it was not.
Over all I gave it a three stars because in the end I enjoyed it.

The first part of the story is told well. It has a good hook. I liked the protagonist and the way the author walked her through the first few chapters of the book. This was by far the best writing of the story.it was crisp , believable and page turning.
Like I said the HOOK was good . The story started failing when “” Jane “”refused to disclose any information to our protagonist.
By this time the rabbit hole of unbelievable situations the author put Jane and the protagonist in was becoming redundant. One after another right up to the last third of the book . Where once again the writing cleaned up , the story started clicking. The ending was a little off and a little one sided for my liking.
Over all it was a good easy read. The book was priced fairly .
I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed this genre.

she was former fbi, she quit after something happened

her mom had mental problems and so does her sister. she wants to go back to her abusive husband after she relocated her and the girls to a state far away

she takes menial jobs, she was working in a bar. after a guy in the bar came on to her she went to the alley for a break. he came out and attacked her. her fbi training kicked in and she broke his nose. then a van came thru the alley, slowed down for a sec and a girl jumped out the back. she looked about 12 in thin tshirt and panties. she ran off while the fbi girl fought with the man with a knife. the police showed up and didnt believe anything she said

she looked for the girl but couldnt find her. after her shift she got in her car and the girl got in too. she didnt want to go to the police and would only say her name was jane, which she didnt believe.

she was going to the police after the girl said ok but someone was following them. she lost them and tried to go back to her apt to get her money so they could hide till she figured out what to do. she couldnt call her roommate as the man in the alley broke her cell phone

when she got inside the apt she found her roommate dead with a gunshot to his head. they had called the police and she saw them in the parking lot. when the police got there she jumped out the back sliding door

some man high up in the presidents area was trafficking girls and getting money funneled using it as leverage

lots of shoot outs and killed people
she lived, the girl and man didnt

Former FBI agent Karen Pantelli lives by a simple philosophy: never, ever care. A tragic mistake involving the death of a child causes her to fling her badge and gun off of a bridge, and choose drifting from dead-end job to dead-end job, moving on to a new place when she finds herself getting too attached to the current place. One night, she sees a malnourished child leap out of the back of a speeding vehicle and she can’t not help. Her training takes over and they end up on the lam in chase that spans half the country.

Wow, wow, wow. Karen Pantellli is something else. She’s very damaged, but still has great instincts, a sharp mind, nerves of steel, and can throw (and take) a punch. She wants to live a quiet, unassuming life, but she just can’t stop being a cop.

This book hit all the right notes for me – topical plot (human trafficking that reaches to the highest level of the U.S. government; tight writing; well-developed characters; packed with action; and an ending I didn’t see coming. This was another gym book for me and it certainly got my heart-rate going. I even found myself thinking about what was happening when I wasn’t reading it. I knew I was hooked when plot elements started showing up in my dreams. I will definitely read more in this series.

I enjoy reading books written by Scott William Carter.

This was not a bad book at all, but I found that it simply was not believable. If that's important to you, you won't find it here.

I enjoy the main character, but her relationships with the others seems so, well . . . fictional. She always ends up in the right place at the right time to advance the story. And that's fine. It's just not believable.

I agree with another reviewer that the main character's relationship with Jane was difficult to believe. Now, I've never been in such a situation, so I can only what would truly happen. I just don't think it would be like Mr. Carter portrays in this book.

Overall, like a good wrestling match, if you can suspend disbelief, this is a fine book by a fine author.

I enjoyed the book despite chapters 16 and 17 being in reverse order and many "typos"--I am not sure who (if anyone) is proofreading for Carter, but many errors are missed.

I have read all of the Garrison Gage books and one other book by Carter, and the writing style of Throwaway Jane is somewhat different--not bad different, just different--almost as though the author of the Gage books is not the author of this book.

The main character in this book, Karen Pantelli, appears (to me) to be a female Jack Reacher: Both have law enforcement backgrounds, both are nomads, both have significant martial arts skills, and both seem to inadvertently wind up helping people in trouble.

Overall, 3 stars, and I will read the next book in the series.

This book was gripping from beginning to end. The mystery, intrigue, relationships and self assessment encompassed all the characters. The main character, Karen was a strong, resilient individual who grappled with demons in her past. When she aids the young girl trying to escape abduction she takes it upon herself to assist her. Therecwere so many unknowns Karen had to deal with, along side saving a mentally unstable sister and her children. I wish I could give this book more than five stars.

Narrator Jennifer Pickens had the perfect voice for Karen. She was able to convince the reader on the strength and intelligence of Karen

I enjoyed this book by Scott William Carter. Karen Pantelli, a former FBI agent with issues from when she was involved in a tragic shooting, rescues a girl who escapes from her kidnapper. Karen is a resilient protagonist, is intelligent, has great training in martial arts, and is drawn to helping people in trouble. “Throwaway Jane” needed help. Karen took on trouble when helping Jane, dealing with sex trafficking and dangerous opponents. It was a story that was difficult to put down as the plot gripped me. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thrillers. I was lucky enough to obtain a free copy of this book.

Ex-FBI agent Karen Pantelli is currently working in a bar-one of the many she's had since quitting her job. Living in different cities for varied amounts of time, she is suffering a bit of PTSD.

She steps out of the bar for a break and is accosted by a drunk patron. No sooner does she fight him off, a van careens down the alley and a young girl dressed in skimpy bra & panties jumps out the back of a van. "Jane" is being chased by a huge guy, that Karen fights off to save "Jane".

Jane insists she needs to get to Vegas and Karen agrees to take her but the trip is anything but dull.

I much prefer the Garrison Gage series and the writing style here is very different.

4.25 Karen Pantelli has become a drifter. Three years after leaving the FBI with emotional scars, she finds herself busing in a bar in Denver. This is where the wild ride begins. She rescues a 13 year-old girls who seems terrified and won't speak, and Karen is framed to be a wanted killer. So she and the girl, who calls herself Jane, are on the run. They end up in Las Vegas where the story more-or-less cumulates. Karen is from Tucson and is very protective of her bipolar sister who now lives in Phoenix with her two daughters, and their relationship comes into play in the story as well. Very easy to listen to, good narration, good story.

Well written with involving characters and settings. Karen is drawn into helping "Jane" after rescuing her when she escapes from her kidnapper going against her motto, never care. Jane is set on going back and rescuing her "sisters", more girls taken for sex trafficking by men in high places and she involves Karen, who in turn brings in her own help dragging the FBI in and Robert the cross dressing singer. It sounds a bit weird but it all works and the only thing I didn't like was the sad ending.

First off….. I don’t get to read a lot compared to some of the people I see on here. But out of the books I have read this year so many are so good and it befuddles my mind how few reviews there are compared to some as good as they are

This author is one of them. I found this story suspenseful and engaging. Well developed characters that you can relate to and cheer on

I am big fan of his Garrison Gage series so tried this one and it did not disappoint. Was also nice to see a cameo appearance of Garrison

I wish more we seek out some of the lesser known authors.

This book is bad for my health. I couldn't stop reading and I got no sleep! It is seriously engrossing!

I decided that Karen is like a female Jack Reacher, only younger. She quit the FBI, moves around, does menial jobs, but helps out people who need it. When she rescues a young barely clothed girl that jump out of a van and ran away, she didn't know what she got herself in for.

I got this book for free, I think on Bookbub, but I will have to find the next in the series, because this book rocked!

If you like unusual people…

I so enjoy Garrison Gage’s writing. I haven’t read any of his books lately and I’m thrilled that I found this one. I’ll have to start looking for more. He comes up with the most unusual characters. And I really like them. I wish they were real people and I could get to know them better. I guess I like unusual. If you like unusual too, you should read his books. This one would be a fine start. Or any of his other books would be great reads too!

I snagged this as a free kindle read for travel. Pretty quickly into the story I was hooked and HAD to keep reading til the end to find out all about "this girl" that Karen saw run out of a van, scantily clad and then Karen (x-FBI agent) had to fight a huge creepy guy to keep him from retrieving the girl!

Lots of players throughout the story and don't be fooled...many of them popped back into play when I least expected it.

Easy, not complicated, but enough mystery and drama without all the gore.

I was so excited to see a new series by Scott William Carter - one of my favorite mystery writers. I loved the Garrison Gage series, and I am loving the Karen Pantelli series now too! And there sure was a surprise about a quarter of the way through the first book. I remember saying YAY!!! I have just downloaded the second book in this series and am excited to read it. Thank you Mr. Carter! Please keep on writing!!

More than a throwaway

Good plot, plenty of action, interesting characters, so why about three and one half stars? Slightly a bit contrived and .far fetched. The first half did just fine. Even the sex seemed off kilter, and the lone ranger did not seem to have complete abandonment into intimacy for any potential suitor.

3.5 stars! Shows promise.
An interesting protagonist, a servicable plot, a fast and enjoyable read.
Katen Pantelli left the FBI after a tragic shooting which affected her ability to do the job, and she now exists on short-term serving gigs in run down bars. Yet years of training kick in automatically when she sees a desperate young girl escape from an attempted abduction. What ensues shows that she still has was it takes to serve and protect the innocent and vulnerable.
I really liked the character of Pantelli, she was credible; neither her angst nor her were skills were overdone, and the risks she took were not eye-rollingly stupid just to bring a bit of jeopardy into the story. The secondary characters were given decent shape. The plot was a bit outlandish but was carried off well. I’ll definitely give the next in the series a go.

Real page turner

Really enjoyed this book. It was fast-paced and I liked a male perspective of a female FBI agent. It was believable and you felt an emotional tie to Karen rooting for her throughout her adventure. When things took a twist it kept you on the edge of your seat. I’d highly recommend this book

There's really nothing to criticize about this story. It's well-paced and suspenseful. Both plot and characters are believable. And Jennifer Pickens performs flawlessly. Thankfully, the story comes to a satisfactory conclusion with no cliffhanger. It's a great start to a promising series.

Note: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Outstanding book that kept me turning the pages (okay, swiping it on my Kindle) until the wee hours of the morning. Fast paced, lots of twists and turns that I didn't see coming until I was right in the middle of it. Believable enough that it's probably true in some form or fashion. Highly recommend.

Should probably give this a 3-star rating since it's reasonably well written. I'm just having trouble with the whole female Jack Reacher thing here. The main character is actually somewhat appealing but ultimately still feels like a female character constructed by a man. That leads to some sour notes at times.

A very good story

This is the first book I’ve read by Scott Carter but it won’t be the last. I practically read it straight through. It grabbed my attention from the very first page and never let up. I do hope he is planning on making this a series as I’d love to see more about the main character. She’s a force to be reckoned with.

Couldn't stop reading

Wow! Very good read. Kept wanting more, hard
to put down at night - read into the wee hours. Karen is a suburb main character, you sympathize with her and applaud when she figures he past problems out. Realistically, kinda hard to believe, but I overlooked that as I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Washed up FBI agent brings down a powerful man.

FBI agent, Karen shot and killed a young girl who picked up a gun and pointed it at Karen. Not being able to deal with the trauma she quit her job.
She found a job and while on break, a young girl jumps out of a van and runs. From there on it is a nonstop adventure.

A helper for the lost souls.

This was one of the best stories I have read in a long time. The characters were very real to believe that the story was written in such a way that you felt like you were watching them in real life. This is a book I recommend to everyone and the author is one I will read more of their books.

A Mind Ripper

The first chapter or two, you might want to stop reading and choose another book . . . DON'T. Keep reading and you'll get pulled into a fast, mind boggling challenge of surprise, fear, hate, compassion, and more with this prior FBI Agent who has many many choices to make and dangerous decisions to do the right thing. It's a non-stop rush. Enjoy!
