Winter passes slowly as the rebels hide out deep in the woods. Karla is on the hunt for blood- Camilla's blood. After all, Camilla's just murdered her husband, the governor of Bear Gap. At least that's what everyone thinks...Nothing is going according to plan. Starting up the rebellion isn't what Camilla thought it would be like. Tension is thick between people who are supposed to be on her side. Trust is hard to earn and even harder to keep.On top of all of that, Camilla can't shake the eerie voice in her head that tells her to return to the swamps, a trip that would risk the location of the rebels and put Camilla's life in serious peril. But the voice is so strong and so convincing that it causes Camilla to question her own sanity. Lies roll off her tongue too easily. She guts a man without blinking and can't think of anything else except what the voice is telling her. With time running out and Warwick at her back, Camilla must draft a winning plan that puts the rebels in control of Bear Gap. The alternative? Death or imprisonment for everyone she loves. Can Camilla ignore the pleading demands of the voice in her head and save the rebellion?
Emily has come a long way from building forts in the woods behind her childhood home. She’s the author of the The Sacrifice of One, the first book in a thrilling, young adult fantasy series. Although born and raised in central Pennsylvania, Emily currently resides in Memphis, TN with her husband and shelter cat, and is vigilant about keeping her house well stocked with dark chocolate.
This is book 2 in Emily’s fantasy series, Camilla Crim. Currently Emily Fortney is doing a re-launch of her series shuffling around the order of her books and this gem is the second book. Book 1 the sacrifice of one is available now! . First of all, not gonna lie, I wanted to slap Camilla so many times in this book. She made my brain hurt and just overall frustrated. There were times I questioned her maturity, because she lacked a lot of common sense as well as how she treats certain situations, at least for me anyway. She has a lot of growing to do so I’m glad there’s more to come hopefully we will see that growth, even with the bit she has done in this one, id just love a bit more. Must admit, the betrayal was left field for me so that surprise gave me a bit of excitement. . That ending?! Omg. I’m afraid to say more in case I accidentally spoil but yasss! I’m living for it anyway. Nothing like an exciting end to get us looking forward to what’s next. I’m still intrigued and fascinated by this world Emily has created. It was amazing to see the rebellion in some way flourish and really take off. Camilla, I must admit, really steeped up in doing what she did with the additions to the rebellion so I’m excited to see where that all goes. . I loved the conflict in this book, it really gets you thinking about what it is you would do in similar situations. But also what you are willing to do. The unravelling of the past intrigued me and I can’t wait to learn more in the next book. . Awesome job Emily! Looking forward to book 3!
I recommend every person who loves liberty ought to read this book and this series!! It’s hard to read some of it in the early chapters when once again the inhuman treatment and torture of people are described. It’s not for the faint of heart so if you’re looking for a light-hearted book well this isn’t for you.
However, in light of all the rioting, looting, destruction of private and personal property, vilifying of our founding fathers and putting one race above another and our woke media, sport, entertainment and one political party ENDORSING said behavior and encouraging it, people need to wake up because if these people gain complete control what we’ve seen the past 3 months will be an everyday occurrence!!
People who love this country are going to be faced with that decision in November. To let these people change this country of America or defend it!!
This book shows people who banded together for a common cause even though later some revelations caused a major break from characters we had come to know and love in this series!
Books should offer a person time to reflect on what they read and see if it applies to their current situation. I think besides being an exciting story I would hope readers will seriously reflect on what they have just read!
If push comes to shove-and it will - what side are you going to embrace when you’re faced with that decision?
This book picks up where the Sacrifice of One leaves off and does an excellent job of carrying the story. I loved the first book and this one was even better! We get to see more of the minor characters' backstory, which I loved and it really brought the story to life. And that ending?! I wasn't prepared for it at all and it left me needing the next book immediately. No spoilers, but the world gets so much more vivid in this book and the rebellion gets a lot more complex However, I constantly wanted to smack Camilla. I felt like she regressed a little and that she lacked common sense when dealing with certain circumstances. There is a lot of room for her to grow though and I really hope that happens because I loved her in the first book. The conflict in this book was really interesting to read and makes you think what you would do if you were in that situation. This book really brought the world to life and I can't wait for the next book!
Some of the things Camilla does in this book will leave you wanting to beat your head against a wall. They are so obviously the wrong choices you will be surprised she makes them! She knows her mom is a witch, but can't believe she could plant thoughts on her head? Her Dad does come through for her a few times in this book & stops drinking. The rebellion really grows in this book. They lose quite a few people along the way. Camilla is able to unite 2 groups of people who one would never think to join together. Camilla sucks at relationships, I'll let you read to figure out that meaning. And lastly Camilla is betrayed by 2 people she cares for dearly. I will say the book is a little slow in the middle. Trust me though, keep reading, it will pay off. You won't want to miss the surprises at the end!

Once again, Camilla and her circle of comrades lured me into their adventure. I felt every stab, cut, shackle, and heartbreak that Camilla and the others suffered as they fought for what is right and good at the expense of their own wellbeing. You'll find this book difficult to put down because it feels as if you want to read the characters right out of their danger-filled dilemmas! This isn't the genre I normally choose to read, but thanks to Camilla and the author who created her, I'm hooked and looking forward to what comes next!
This book was a fast read with plenty of adventure and intrigue. Whether read as a stand alone, book two of the “old” series or book three in the reshuffled series, you will be caught up within the first few pages. What is the voice in Camilla’s head and why must she get the box from her childhood home. What does that have to do with the rebel’s cause? A few shockers towards the end that I didn’t see coming and do we really know who the traitor/spy is in the rebel camp? Looking forward to next book in the series to see what happens next.
A continuation of camilla‘s story and the battle of her rebels for the freedom of Bear Gap. While she has to fight the allure of her mother Portia and the secrets of her mother’s past. How much would you risk for freedom; family, love, and home. What a great book two can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I enjoyed watching Camila’s character adapt to each situation and learn more about her past. I’m intrigued to see more of how she and her friends respond to new challenges and if she will discover more about her past and her mother’s past. Looking forward to the next instalment
This book is riveting from cover to cover. It follows the story’s heroine, Camilla, through a turning point in the Bear Gap rebellion. If you like a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, you’ll want to start this one - but not before reading its prequel, The Sacrifice of One.
While this one was better than the first book I still don't like Camilla. She is selfish and rude and never really thinks of anyone but herself. In fact most of the characters are unlikable but the plot pulls you in and I want to see what happens next.
I LOVED this book!! Just like the last one, it was a definite page turner. I found it to be full of suspense and plot twists, which definitely made me want to put this one down either. Finally, I had to stop reading at about 10:30 last night so I could get some sleep, which really sucked because I had just gotten to the good part, haha, but luckily I had time to finish it today. Now that I'm finally done reading it, I'm SUPER excited to see what is going to happen in The Dark Ruler!! Excuse me while I go anxiously await this book for 26ish more days....
