This takes place before the Battle of Christophsis. Anakin has his scar, but Ahsoka isn't his padawan yet. I knew going in that this would be more geared towards kids. Doesn't feel like an important story just yet, but the characters feel like themselves, even if the art isn't my cup of tea.
Following in the footsteps of Tales from Vader's Castle and its sequel, The Clone Wars - Battle Tales is a five-issue miniseries structured with a framing story set during a Republic operation on the planet Hisseen sometime before The Clone Wars movie. As the framing story advances, each issue will tell a secondary story, told as a flashback and illustrated by different artists.
Issue 1 opens with Rex, Cody, Wolfe, and their men pinned down by enemy droids, being saved by Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Plo Koon. With their men safe, the three Jedi continue their mission to prevent Count Dooku from finding Hisseen's hidden leaders. Left to hold the line, Cody expresses doubt in Anakin, leading to Rex defend his Jedi general, remembering when the young Jedi left nobody behind during a mission to the planet Benglor.
I found issue 1 to be an okay start. The shift in art styles between the framing story and the flashback isn't jarring and the flashback didn't come off as interrupting the framing story. In fact, with how the flashback is framed, it comes off as Rex remembering the story, instead of stopping to tell Cody. I feel that is an improvement over Tales from Vader's Castle, as there, the story would screech to a stop for the characters to tell their tale. Here, the flashback felt more organic. It's also implied that Anakin and Rex had not been working for long in the flashback, with Benglor being what cause Rex to have undying loyalty for Skywalker.
However, as with Tales from Vader's Castle, I feel that the split between flashbacks and the framing story can lead to the latter being underdeveloped. Only time will tell with the coming issues.
Great start! It was nice to see Rex and Anakin just starting to get used to working together. It was also nice to see Cody not quite used to Anakin yet either. Hardcase was wonderfully in character, but I don't want to spoil anything! I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing Rex, Cody, and Wolffe working together!
This was easy to follow and aimed at a younger age group. Definitely something I will be sending along to my nieces and nephews who are currently into Star Wars.
