His name was Bug. I assumed it was because he was nuttier than a bed bug until he saved me when I was attacked. For reasons known only to him, Bug thought it was his duty to keep me safe. I was the sergeant-at-arms of the Soldiers of Fortune MC. I didn't need saving, but I couldn't bring myself to tell him so, especially not after I discovered he was my mate.

His name was Bear. It fit. He was tall and scary and built like a bear. He was also my savior, even if he didn't know it. When I saw someone attack him in an alley one night, I knew I had to save him. When everyone brushed off my concern for his safety, I knew I was the only one who could save him. But, when he started talking about mates and bear shifters, I had to wonder if he was even crazier than I was.

When troubles comes for the Soldiers of Fortune MC, convincing Bear and his club brothers to listen to the whispers I hear from the shadows might be harder than accepting the fact that shifters are real and I'm mated to one of them.

2 Stars because Bug really is *that* adorable. This book really asks for unprecedented levels of suspension of disbelief from the reader and I'm not sure if it was all worth it in the end. The shifter worldbuilding is practically non-existent. It took two thirds of the book for the fact that the MC is a clan of bear shifters to even come up and then it was really only relevant because of course Bug turned out to be Bear's mate.

Bug is the main reason I stuck this out but he's also a big part of the books problems. He is obviously neurologically compromised due to the severe head trauma he suffered. Add in his incredibly dark and depressing backstory and you get a character who shouldn't work the way he does. He frankly functions too well to be as traumatized as he *should* be. And the levels of trauma his backstory brings also mean that he should absolutely *not* be having a sexual relationship with Bear since in the cold harsh light of day his ability to consent is a huge question mark.

A case of an author wanting to have her cake and eat it too.

2.5 stars rounded down. The only character that was interesting was Bug. Lots of loopholes tho. Does being a Bear shifter’s mate mean that he has fast healing - able to survive getting shot in the head and dumped in a river???

No one ever explained.

But there was no real plot and I wanted to like Bear - he’s the type of big, muscly man I’d like to like, but meh.

I doubt I’ll continue with this series or this author.

Entertaining

I had my doubts when I started because of the first few chapters with typos, but those smoothed out and I fell in love with a main character. That’s when it became worth the read. Loved the characters in this story.

"Do thing with little wiggly. You bite. I bite. We mates." "It's a very big wiggly, thank you very much."

(ENG) It was a fast-paced story with lots going on, so I felt it was a bit rushed and left with a lot of unresolved questions that I hope will be answered in future books.
I really enjoyed it. It was easy to read in one sitting, and I'm already looking forward to reading more in the series.

Bug, what a refreshing character. I loved how strong, vulnerable and fierce he was. I wonder did he know deep done that Bear was his?? There was some word switches and some story line that needed more tweaking, but other than that I enjoyed this one.

This author was a new-to-me read and I'm really glad that I took the chance. This is a really unique take on shifters and motorcycle clubs - although the shifter aspect is really only a background point to the main storyline.
Bug is a young man living on the streets when he saves a biker from a beating. He's been watching over Bear for a long time - ever since Bear showed him some kindness once in the past - and he's there to step up when Bear needs help. Bear - ironically both his shifter animal and his MC name - isn't sure what to make of the strange young man that saved him but there's just something about Bug that draws him in. Between attempts on their lives and rival MC clubs, Bear and Bug are going to have to learn to trust in each other and their bond to see them through.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I thought the story and characters were fairly unique. There were a few points that seemed to be rushed and a few things mentioned that didn't really get fully explained, but I'm thinking that future books might touch on some of these. They weren't enough to take me out of the story or take away from my enjoyment. Just small points I thought should be mentioned. It's a fairly quick read and one that I'll probably revisit again. I actually read it in KU but then bought a copy because I liked it that much. I'm also going to purchase the next two books to see where the story goes from here. Definitely something that I'd recommend giving a try!

First of all, Why is this book named forgiveness? It’s got no relevance to the story. The story could’ve been so much more but the plot was all over the place. There is trauma, mental illness, bikers, shifters, childhood abuse, head trauma injury etc. Also the character of bug after all his trauma I thought the relationship would take more time and patience and love to build up. But the whole thing was in fast forward mode I didn’t like it.
Another thing that really irritated me about the story was that the club warehouse had a lot of suspicious activity going on why the hell couldn’t they just put your Surveillance camera or a guard over there. As if bug was the only person who could find out what was wrong at the warehouse. Also I didn’t understand how the story ended or why things are happening in the sequence they were.

Me gusta este libro y podría ser merecedor de un 4 pero no trata algunos temas como debería, ni ahonda en algunas cosas como me gustaría que hiciera, pero es un buen libro

This was a take it or leave it type of book for me. I did enjoy it but I didn’t feel much excitement over reading it. It was just okay. I adored all the characters but it just felt like I wanted more; more detail, more intimate moments between Bug and Bear, just more!

We meet Bear, the Sergeant-at-Arms for the club, and Bug, the street rat, at the same time. Bug has saved Bear’s life and their story is a whirlwind from there. They’re SUCH opposites but oh my gosh are they freaking CUTE together.

Bug is easily one of the most interesting characters I have ever read! He’s lived his life on the streets for a long time, a survivor, but he is so dang smart and resourceful. When you learn his backstory, he will yet again surprise you at just how much strength and tenacity his tiny body holds!

I did feel like the jump from Bear finding Bug again to them going through the whole fated mates thing is QUICK. It was odd to me, once I learned Bug’s backstory, how quickly he was to let Bear have his body. I felt like there should have been more talking, that first time should have been a bit slower!

If you’re looking for something a little different with one of the quirkiest characters you will ever meet, give this one a chance!

so good!!!

Really awesome story. Unique and a great start to a series with 1 glaring issue for me.
I would love if it was fleshed out a bit more with both bear & bugs back story.

*******Spoilers Ahead*******
The medical inconsistencies really are not a huge deal for me. It’s explained enough that he heals fast that I could kind of see where that would end up. (It’s further discussed in later books)
No, the issue for me is that early in the story it’s mentioned that he “crawled out of the lake,” 6 years ago. Then we find out that the video was filmed when the victim appeared to be a 10 year old. Uhm, does that make bug a 16 year old? It totally drug me out of the story. I’m a bit concerned because bear does note early on that he is more a boy than a man. It’s a work of fiction, but I felt kind of skeevy once my brain made that connection. So I’m just assuming that in editing some wires got crossed that big was street living for not than 6 years.

That was long, sorry. But I hope that this is absolutely cleared up later in the series or it’s re-edited to make him age appropriate.

So yes, you need to suspend disbelief, but it is a shifter romance. A lot of people comment on Bug’s fast healing as unrealistic, but Bug himself comments on that, and we are led to believe he is special in some way. It is a shame that isn’t explored at all - it would have been nice if it was explained that he had some shifter dna or something to account for his healing and situational awareness. He also overcomes his early trauma in an unrealistic manner, which bothered me more than his unrealistic healing.

That aside, Bug was just such a fantastic character. It was a pleasure to be in his head. Bear started off a little grouchy, but we quickly find him overcoming that and being the snuggly bear that Bug deserves. The storyline was good - it had some action and some mystery as to who the bad guys were. It was wrapped up very neatly by the end, with our characters getting their HEA. I almost wish we had a little more, but that’s a testament to how much I liked the characters. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I’ll be reading the next in the series.

NON-SPOILER:

I am not sure exactly how to describe my dislike of the overall “flow” of the story. It felt off… might have been pacing, the way concepts were introduced, etc. but something about this story didn’t get me excited. At ~20% I jumped to the end to check up on Bug, then decided I wanted to read Bug’s story, so I went back and actually read it.

Bug has a traumatic backstory that is, essentially, glanced over. I actually enjoy dark books, so it wasn’t that the trauma was so upsetting I couldn’t read. It was that his trauma almost wasn’t near as upsetting as it should be because there were no lasting impacts on his character.

Despite this, Bug made the book for me. I literally finished so I could read about him.

I would have liked to see better pacing, more world building, and more realistic character reactions to the events of the book.

Ultimately, I probably won’t continue this series. This wasn’t a bad way to spend a couple days’ free time, but it didn’t excite me for more.

So this is a shifter and an mc story, but not really. The main focus is Bug and his relationship with Bear.

Bug is one of those rare characters that captured my immediate attention. I knew he'd be interesting and that he'd have one hell of a backstory. I wasn't wrong.

Bug is homeless and lives on the street. He has for years after surviving [redacted]. Bug rescues Bear, a bear shifter, from a pipe weiding bad man. Dismissing Bug entirely as crazy, Bug is determined to protect Bear.

What follows is a lot of violence and bad men running around causing mayhem. When Bear realizes Bug is his mate, things move even faster.

I wish this story was longer. I loved Bug.

This was a super original story with a well written mc. The plot really grows as the stories go on. This book is Bug and Bear's story, but the other shifters will get their mates, too, in follow-up books.

I love this story and have reread it many times.

Oh my various gods!

This book. THIS BOOK. THIS FRICKIN BOOK! CANNOT WAIT FOR MORE HOPE THIS IS A SERIES OMFG.

ok. So. Are there issues with this book? Yes. Some editing issues, some huge breaks from reality (Even for a shifter book), some other little things... Is it an epic masterpiece? No. But it IS amazing. But was AWESOME and Bear was so good for him. The plot isn't like, dazzling or anything. It's pretty basic really. What puts this story above a lot of others is the characters. Poor bug, I wanted to WEEP for bug. Lumpy. Lawls.

Bottom line the second there is more I will snatch that up like candy. I wish there was more to this one, just so I could read bug more. Excellent, amazing, awesome. LOVED THIS.

I really enjoyed this book. I absolutely loved Bug and Bear as the MCs. I liked the glimpse that we got into the Soldiers of Fortune MC. If I had a complaint, it would be that we didn’t get a big enough feel for what kind of MC the Soldiers of Fortune were. It alluded to illegal activities, but nothing was spelled out. Also there were things going on with Bug that were never fully explained. I’m hoping the author continues the series so that we can potentially get more information on Bug’s background. All in all, highly enjoyable read.

Really good

Wow this book was just heartbreaking. This wasn’t your typical M/M romance book. There were so many dark moments and I honestly felt so bad for Bug. My heart broke reading this story and how he came to be the way he is. I wasn’t a big fan of bear at first but he tends to grow on you.
If bug wasn’t his mate bear would’ve been a typical jerk. But I just wished that the author had told the story of how bug and bear first met. Since in the book bear doesn’t know why bug keeps following him but bug tells us that bear saved him once. Bear doesn’t know why bug keeps following him but I wished the author had emphasized on that more so bear could see why bug kept following him.

Well, that was certainly interesting... kinda short on the pertinent details, but entertaining nonetheless! Bug, as we all knew going in was absolutely adorable and I am thinking that his past still holds one or two details that I hope we will get in the next book.

As for Bear? There were so many questions and very few answers that I had about bear. For instance, what is his real name? Perhaps we were given it and I just missed it in my rush to see what was going to happen to our darling Bug next... grrr

Yes, I will be jumping right into Reckoning, because I just have to know... LOL!!!

Surprisingly wholesome and sweet. I wasn't sure how dark this would go because it's MC, but I was hopeful the shifter aspect would keep it lighter and it absolutely did. None of the members are "bad" and the club itself is positioned as basically just a pack that has motorcycles. They don't appear to do anything illegal, their income comes from investments lmao

Bugs baby talk is a bit jarring. It makes sense for the character's story, but then he should be able to learn grammar over time (if he has the capacity to learn other things, mature, learn new words, etc). And the awkwardness is basically brushed aside with "it's a shifter thing" which... Okay... Let's pretend that's fine.

Basically, Bug has a dark backstory, but the book itself is pretty wholesome. And a bit gross.

The book started off with a bang. Bear, part of the Soldiers of Fortune MC, his assaulted and is saved by a street kid named Bug, who hides him while the man who hit him wants to finish the job. Bear takes bug back to the MC and it's obvious to everyone that something is a bit off about Bug. But the man saves him and the MC more than once and comes to mean more to Bear than he or anyone in the MC could imagine. I love how the story played out with action, suspense, and romance. Bug becomes an integral member of the MC and I was enthralled from page one. A great read!

While I sometimes have mixed feelings about Aja Foxx's writing style, this one just worked for me.
The MCs were not evenly developed as Bugs was well developed but Bear - not really. The world-building was minimal. The plot was interesting in that it was in the ' medias res ' fashion where the reader is dropped into the middle of the story and the precursor action is dropped in as you go. There were holes all over the place and the editing was less than stellar, yet in spite of that, I found this a fascinating read. Perhaps because the character of Bug was so interesting.

very intense and serious trigger warnings

I read a lot of Aja Foxx books and appreciate her way of exposing darkness and dealing with the victim getting some kind of revenge. or closure. But I felt that this one needs a fan warning. Her disclosure are always direct but usually not really impactful beyond a scene or two.

That is not the case with this book. It was a good read, but could be very triggering for anyone who has been sexually abused or lived through childhood drama. For your own mental health if you struggle with either please skip this book.

Forgiveness

I loved this book and would have given 5 stars, but the editing was terrible! Names mixed up, so had to reread to make sense in some parts, which stopped the flow.
Saying that, the MCs were absolutely adorable and so perfect together.
The story was well told and the plot was great with a little angst thrown in to make it exciting. An excellent start to a new series and I can't wait for more!!

Very good

Very good book. Story was spectacular and I fell in love with Bug so hard. I just wish some things had been elaborated on more. I feel like more depth would have done this story good. After hospital healing timeline is my number one problem with this story. Otherwise it was great. A little fast paced and I feel like certain shifter stuff could have been explained better to Bug but that might have been the point.

Well this book was different and I loved every minute of it. I usually don’t go for shifter books but I’ve been getting into the fated mates and I’ll have to say this book was one of the better ones. I absolutely loved Bug! I’m intrigued by the rest of the series. The only question I have is: why did Bug never tell Bear how he knew Bear because he gave him money before? I would have loved to see that conversation!! Anyway I highly recommend.
