Black cats born at midnight
Are different indeed
A mischievous, odd
And peculiar breed . . .

In the middle of winter, three kittens are born in a barn. Two are ordinary, but the third, jet black and born on the stroke of midnight, is brimming with magic from whiskers to tail - even sparking life into a dusty old broomstick! While her siblings pounce at rats, Midnight perfects her flying skills on the broom, not noticing how her mother disapproves of her magical ways...

When Midnight finds herself abandoned, the little black kitten sets out to find a new home with only her loyal broom Twiggy at her side. The pair soon befriend a kind-hearted girl called Trixie. But how will Trixie's family react to Midnight's extraordinary powers and taste for mischief?

A bewitching new series from the best-selling author of A PINCH OF MAGIC , Michelle Harrison. Told in rhyming verse and illustrated in colour throughout, this is perfect for readers of SQUISHY MCFLUFF, HUBBLE BUBBLE and GOBBOLINO .

My first children's novel, THE 13 TREASURES, won the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize. THE OTHER ALICE won the Calderdale Book of the Year Award. A PINCH OF MAGIC won a Dutch Bronze Pen Award. My books have been translated and sold in 25 territories worldwide.

Before becoming a full-time writer I worked in publishing as an editor, and before that, as a bookseller. Prior to that, I worked in bars, a bakery, and a second-hand record shop to make ends meet while trying to get my first book deal. I live in Essex and have a son, Jack, and two cats, Widdershins and Lucky.

My next children's novel is A CLOCK STRIKES MURDER, a sequel to TWICE UPON A TIME, publishing in March 2026 in the UK. My debut novel for adults is TWO LITTLE LIARS, a thriller partially set in the 1990s. It publishes in June 2026.

Having a black cat it was one that I definitely wanted to read. I’ve read many of Michelle’s other books for older children so I knew I was in for a treat.
I wasn’t wrong! I had completely missed that it was written in poem form when I chose it and if I’m honest, I probably wouldn’t have chosen it if I’d known as I’m not a huge fan of books written in rhyme/poetry. HOWEVER, I am a convert. I loved it and it’s definitely going on my Class library shelf.

It was a little bit sad at the start but when Midnight finds Twig and then Trixie the fun really starts. Black cats are definitely special creatures and have magical powers, I’m sure my Sooty does.

Definite recommend for younger readers 😊

The perfect Sunday morning read! I loved A Pinch of Magic and A Sprinkle of Sorcery by Michelle Harrison so when I saw this was coming out I HAD to get it. A lovely story in rhyme about a magical kitten and gorgeously illustrated by Elissa Elwick. It will be coming to school with me tomorrow ❤️

It’s really good because the cat in the story is really magical. It’s really funny when Midnight jumps into a bubble. You should read this book because you‘ll like when the broom starts flying!

Black cats born at midnight
Are different indeed
A mischievous, odd
And peculiar breed
Her older brother and sister behave but Midnight is different, she has magical ways, bringing an old broomstick to life and giving it a life of its own. Abandoned by her mother, brother, and sister, she only has her loyal broomstick, Twiggy, as her friend. But then they are befriended by Trixie and her family. Although Trixie's Dad is not too keen, her Nan is certainly up for an adventure. Midnight does try to behave but it's boring so she thought she would show Trixie a little bit of magic. But like most magical adventures one thing leads to another. Oops.
I loved this adventure for younger readers. It's great fun to read out loud as it's all in verse, but easy to read as an introduction to chapter books. Elissa Elwick's wonderful illustrations bring Midnight to life and I can't wait to find out what happens next to Midnight, Twiggy, and Trixie. I was given this book by the publishers for a frank & honest review.

This is lush - a magical little kitten and what happens when he finds a friend and does some magic! I loved the rhyming of this and I’d LOVE my own black cat (especially if it were magical!!). This is perfect for children beginning to read chapter books. The illustrations are wonderful. I bet this would make a lovely read aloud to a Year 1/2 class!
