A twisted psychological thriller of lies, blackmail, and revenge.
How far would you go to save your reputation?
Rachel has it all. A successful YouTube channel in the trendy OC, martini lunches, a luxurious home overlooking the ocean. So what if she enjoys the occasional shoplifting spree?
But then one mistake changes her life forever.
When Dennis apprehends Rachel, she realizes her compulsion has gone too far. Because there's more to Dennis than just a security guard doing his job. He becomes obsessive, blackmailing Rachel, and will stop at nothing until he has torn Rachel's world apart.
But Rachel has other secrets hidden in the closet of her beachfront home, and when her perfect life begins to spiral dangerously out of control, she finds she's capable of almost anything to save herself.
Secrets have a way of rising to the surface and wreaking havoc, but in the wrong hands they can do much more harm!
“Spending one second in a room with you is all it takes to know what it feels like to be with somebody who’s batshit, legally, spiritually, undeniably, off their rocker.”
There are two narrators:
Rachael: A gorgeous, successful and rich YouTuber, who gets caught shoplifting.
Dennis: The hipster security guard, who catches her and tries to blackmail his way into her life.
The cat-and-mouse game between these two kept me on the edge of my seat. Scrapping for control and power over the other. Both con artists, but which one is the crazier one? Once I hit 75%, I couldn’t stop reading. This was the perfect type of light read I needed!

“Hey, denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.” ― Debra Lynch, The Perfect Liar
For people who like their mysteries with a little bit of twist..OK..A HECK OF A TWIST..this one's for you!
Rachel is a successful Yoga Blogger with her own show, living in Laguna Beach California. She is beautiful (looks like Blake Lively), successful and smart. AND she lives right on the ocean. She wakes up to the sea and crashing waves every day. Hey Rachel, need a roommate?
LOL..Anyway..Rachel has just one itty bitty nasty secret.
She shop lifts.
OK..She shop lifts FREQUENTLY. She is what is charmingly referred to as a kleptomaniac .
Until one day, in s mall and upscale boutique, it all goes wrong for her. You see, Rachel is caught. By Dennis, a repugnant nutter of a security Guard, who heads up security.
Rachel does NOT want to be caught...she could lose everything. So she begs Dennis to let her go.
And he does.
Then the texts start. And the demands. Very soon, Rachel might be wishing she'd let herself be arrested...
I REALLY was impressed with the wild ride that was this book. It was fast paced and had a strong and nasty edge. Dennis was everybody's worst nightmare and made a chilling villain..
There is a twist that was clever, well written an d just amazing. Do not try to guess at it. Just enjoy the book.
Warning..aspects can be upsetting. I will say that up front.
But it is a heck of a crazy read and I also now want to move to Laguna Beach after reading about this town/. I think the writer should double as a Promotions specialist for Laguna Beach because she sold me.
Anyway..it's a chilling story with lots of twists, leading to the BIG one and ..without spoilers..if you are a fan of the film "The Usual Suspects" you will most likely dig this. 3.5 stars, rounded up to four.
I must admit, I was not really into The Perfect Liar by Debra Lynch, but at around 40% the book started to kick into a higher gear for me. Hold onto your hats once Part 3 kicks in, the book will take you on a wild twisted ride! With 2 of the main characters as crazy as they come, you'll never guess this ending.
Thank you to Book Sirens for the free digital ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. All opinions are my own.
I love me some good psychological thrillers; however way too many folks try way too hard to be the next Gone Girl or other such popular books.
The Perfect Liar, however, races right past Gone Girl and throws a handful of dirt back at it for good measure.
Wow. At first blush, you think Rachel is a spoiled rich YouTuber with a little issue of her habit of shoplifting. It's actually a little hard to feel sorry for her at first because she just seems TOO perfect.
Then you meet Dennis, the creepy security guy who just can't seem to leave Rachel alone. The second part of the book recounts the first part but through Dennis' eyes and you really begin to wonder what is up with this creepy weirdo.
Finally, in the third part, you get alternating viewpoints and holy mother...when you realize who is really conning who....
I really enjoyed this book. It is gripping and shares just enough to keep you hooked because you have to see what in the world is going to happen next. The end is the best because revenge is a dish best served cold...cold-hearted perhaps :)
I received a free copy of this book from the author and Book Sirens in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of those rare times I can honestly say I totally did not see that coming! And then everything makes sense. The Perfect Liar by Debra Lynch was nothing like I’d expected. When we first meet Rachel, she seems to have the perfect life, perfect job, perfect ... everything. She is beautiful, well liked, and adored by many fans due to her YouTube channel. You really have to wonder what could possibly be wrong in this girl’s life. She then does something totally unexpected and out of character. This one act sets off the rest of the book. During this act, Rachel meets Dennis, who seemingly is obsessed with her. The first part of the book is told from Rachel’s point of view, And it’s kind of hard to understand why she feels the need to misbehave the way she does. The second part of the book is the same story but told through the eyes of Dennis. This puts a whole different spin on things. I started questioning everything I thought I knew and realized I really did not know where this book was going to lead. In the last part, things quickly go completely wacko. I could not have guessed the motive behind both characters. I love how things were wrapped up and even made sense, yet I still sat there with my mouth hanging open! Thank you to BookSirens for providing an e-copy of this book for my voluntary review.
A story about two psychos trying to outsmart one another? Or is it? Nothing is as it seems. I felt like it was a little slow paced at first but once it picked up speed it went flying. Definitely didn't see coming the part about Madeline. It was an entertaining read and I wouldn't mind reading more of this author's work.
This is the perfect psychological thriller. It was a heart stopper from page one. At first I thought the prologue was a bummer because I thought it gave it too much away. Was I ever wrong. The novel was the best psychological thriller I’ve ever read. I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read more of this author.
I couldn't finish this. I had to give it up pretty early on. I don't have to like the characters in a book, but I really couldn't get into it. I skimmed through much of it as it was annoying. The main character bugged me. Too much talk about how hot and sexy she was and how she couldn't help stealing things. Stupid. Very juvenile.
This is a very intriguing read, it will twist you one way and then another, before finally revealing the full truth behind the events that have happened. The main characters are Rachel and Dennis. Rachel Goodman is a vlogger and yoga instructor and has set up a successful business with her partner Levi Swift, running a YouTube channel, The Namaste Getaway, a popular yoga lifestyle video blog. She also teaches a class showing people how to create their own vlogs. It seems like she has everything until the day she makes a mistake, giving in to her kleptomaniac yearnings and taking a letter opener from a shop called Treasure Trove. There, she is caught by the security guard, Dennis Smith, who works there at his uncle’s shop. Luckily for her, he won’t turn her into the police for an item that she misjudged the value of, as he has other ideas. The item is more expensive than she ever knew and would have been classed as a felony crime.
She begs him to let her off, or to pay for it, which he refuses. He now has the upper hand and makes a copy of the footage and tells her she can have it, if she meets him after work for a drink. This begins a long series of blackmail, obsessive stalking and phone calls/texts and insisting that she meet up with him whenever he wants her to. He goes much further and wants a private lesson and even tries to tell her what to wear, and is insanely jealous of her business partner and best friend Levi! She hides what he is doing to her from Levi and her other best friend, her aunt Madeline, who is in a wheelchair due to a medical condition, but also helps her with chair based yoga lessons. Rachel’s father died when she was nine and she never really knew her mother, she was left in care until her aunt managed to get her out of care when she was thirteen. Her aunt lives nearby Rachel’s trendy beach house and is looked after by Rachel, from her profits.
Dennis makes every increasing demands on Rachel and even tries to include Rachel’s friends into mix, trying to ensure she is his and no one else’s! He has a twisted manner of trying to get someone to like him and be his girlfriend, never mind even just a friend. He may have had a somewhat troublesome past, but Rachel herself is hiding a lot from her past. Some of it is hidden in a secret closet in her home and is proof of what she has done in the past. It seems like her life is spiralling out of control, just when she thinks she has gotten the upper hand against Dennis and put a stop to his attentions, he manages to overrule her actions, with some of his own. Drawing her in, even further, into his web of obsessive behaviour. He has targeted her and he doesn’t want to let her go!
Matters are pushing Rachel to think of what she might have to be capable of, if she is ever going to get out from under his obsession with her. Could she go as far as to kill him, if it would mean she could get away? She has to balance her actions against what would happen to her business and her notoriety, as she is well known around town and online. Everything is being pushed to a climax, but this storyline has a lot more surprises to throw at you and will be nothing you could even imagine! Very novel plot and a great read. Definitely an author to follow if you like a really good psychological thrill of a read. I certainly will be. I can’t wait to see what they write next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I read The Perfect Liar for a Goodreads Psychology/Thriller book club selection for October 2020. Wow, what a great choice of book for this month. I absolutely enjoyed reading The Perfect Liar. I was pulled into this great storyline. This book centers around a late 20's Yoga Youtuber/Blogger, Rachel, and a crazed ex con mom and pop security employee, Dennis. Rachel has a knack for shoplifting to give her an euphoric high. Dennis is an ex con working at his uncle's trinket shop.
This book banters back and forth between Rachel and Dennis. One of the things I like about this book is the author tells a third of the story from Rachel's perspective, a third of the story from Dennis' perspective and the rest of the book banters between the point of view of Rachel and Dennis. I also enjoyed the yoga and healthy living lifestyle that plays out in this book. I had to google some of the yoga themed works found in this book, like Rachel's yoga studio name and the kabocha drink bar located close to Rachel's yoga studio.
I loved how the author showed the vulnerabilities and youth of Rachel. However, the reader eventually finds out Rachel is not the innocent victim she displays in the book. I also found it interested how the author included kid like pranks Rachel used against Dennis. This put the innocent youth point of view for Rachel. I had to get some feedback from my GR book club to determine what was the author's reas0ning for including the pranks in the book. The consensus from my GR book club was that played to Rachel's youth point of view.
I would like to give this book a glowing review as I was blown away with this book. The Perfect Liar is a great, fun read. And I'm so glad I took the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful book.
Meet Rachel Goodman, a famous YouTuber, a vlog instructor, and a rich California girl. But a traumatic event when she was 9 also made her a compulsive thief and a perfect liar. After getting caught stealing a priceless letter opener, she gets caught in a blackmail scheme by the dorky security guard.
Story is told in Rachel’s snarky and witty voice, which I enjoyed. Some of the chapters were a little too long, particularly when narrating the video recordings of the yoga show.
Part 1 was all about how annoyed Rachel was about the sick, creepy security guard and she was only focused on one thing: Don’t ever blackmail Rachel Goodman. But what Rachel didn’t know was that this creep had more access to her life than she thought.
Part 2 recapped the same story from Dennis’ (the security guard) point of view. So basically, we have 2 con artist liars.
I gotta say that reading this felt kind of long. In fact, part 1 takes up half the book. I just kept hoping that something eventful or mysterious would happen, so I kept reading. I just got curious to see how this would end seeing that we get a major stand-off between two talented con artists.
I’m glad I kept reading because this led to a surprisingly satisfying conclusion. A good read of twin masters trying to outdo each other.
Finally, a somewhat suspenseful book for me after reading a bunch of mediocre 2 star books.
I never could tell who I felt I should be rooting for or if there was a love story in the making. In the end, I never really rooted for anyone. I never did understand why Rachel kept goading him on by wearing his dress or wearing his gross going steady bracelet. Yuck. But the end was really suspenseful. I did not see the
Pretty good read with some rough areas to read. I don't like reading about rape, But everyone got what they had coming. I wasn't really happy for Rachel in the end. I was kind of like, eh, well, she'll probably be happy with all her money now. So there's that.
Side note: Way too much usage of the word "creepy". Find a thesaurus and use some new adjectives.
*Thank you BookSirens and the publisher for this eARC to review!* I can't lie, I didn't go into this expecting much, but wow this book proved me wrong. The Perfect Liar is about a famous Youtube personality, Rachel, going head to head with a psychopath, Dennis; but ultimately this book is about revenge. I don't want to explain much of the plot, because I feel it is best left experienced by the reader, but this has some well-loved tropes, some gore, and plenty of twists, especially after the 40% mark. To me, this book was a guilty pleasure and I couldn't get enough of it. The writing wasn't anything groundbreaking, but I found both POVs readable. The twist made sense and I liked the way the author tied up all the loose ends. I'm excited to see what this author writes in the future!
Having read (seemingly) hundreds of psychological thrillers during Quarantine The Perfect Liar was one of the best! My favorite style is the different POVs and that concept is used really well here. Rachel and Dennis, Denis and Rachel, what are you up to? Rachel is an outwardly successful professional woman living her best life and Dennis is a security guard - their lives collide and the twisted creepy fun begins and I really wasn’t sure where it was going until it went there. And, oh boy, did it go there! Excellent - I was thrilled to receive an advance copy and happily leaving this review voluntarily.
I was fortunate to receive a copy of this book to read from Book Sirens.
It starts off with quite a threatening scene but thankfully there wasn't much violence in the book!
Rachel crosses paths with Dennis and it turns nasty on both sides. I was wondering how there could be a whole book about their weird "relationship" and then the twist dropped. Wow!
This is a fast paced thriller and I definitely recommend it.
Needs to have more stars to rate this amazing book
Where do I start? I'm depressed now because I just finished reading it and so now I have a book hangover.! ....had me on the edge of my seat, amazing characters that I felt I knew, twists & turns, & a shocker of an ending. Clever, scary, unpredictable, evil, brilliant, my heart in throat, loved Rachel, loved Levi, hated Dennis....please Debra, write more.....you're exquisitely talented!
For me, unreliable narrators are what made me not want to put down this book because I wanted to know what was true and what wasn't but was being made to sound like true to get my sympathy. There were times when I would gasp or hold my breath while reading this and towards the end it started to come together for me a little bit but I was still surprised at the actual ending. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book through BookSirens thanks to the author and publisher.
I'm picky when it comes to reading new authors, but OMG I am so glad I read this! I couldn't put it down and wound up staying up too late on a work day just to finish this. The characters were amazing, very well written. The plot grabs your attention from the beginning. This book is worth reading.
I received an ARC for free and am leaving my honest, unbiased review voluntarily.
What started off like a cat and mouse game ended up like one would never predict. This book is amazing and as you dive deeper into the varying levels of deceit, your mouth will agape open as the book climaxes to a shocking realization that everything you thought to be true was actually a lie. Because honestly, she is the perfect liar.

I have to say, I was really thinking I wasn't going to enjoy The Perfect Liar by Debra Lynch. It was a slower start, but around the half way point it really grabbed my attention.
Keep reading because this is a twisty unexpected ending. I ended up really enjoying this.

Not quite sure what I thought of this book! After Part 1, I was ready to stop reading not liking the creepy stalker character. Got back into it during Part 2 and continued reading till the end. The author describes this read perfectly, a claustrophobic feel of two psychos going after each other lol. You choose whether you want to read it or not..
It took me forever to get into this book. I felt like the first 40% of the book just rehashed over and over the shoplifting incident, from different angles. After I'd read about half of the book, it finally got interesting. The last third of the book is unexpected, has twists and turns , and the ending is very good.
This is an unusual book for many reasons. While being well~written, pacy and full of interesting and complicated characters, there are twists which you will not guess, but which are neither far~fetched or unbelievable. I enjoyed this book a lot.
