Kevin Hart is an award-winning actor and comedian. His films, including Central Intelligence, Think Like a Man, Get Hard, Ride Along, The Wedding Ringer, and The Secret Life of Pets have earned over $3.5 billion at the box office. His stand-up comedy tours, including Let Me Explain, Laugh at My Pain, and What Now?, have sold out arenas and football stadiums, leading Forbes to name him the “king of comedy.” He is also the first comedian with a Nike sneaker line; a television producer, creating the BET show Real Husbands of Hollywood and the Laugh Out Loud Network; and CEO of Hartbeat Productions. Hart currently lives in Los Angeles with his family.
Kevin Hart is a multi-million actor and comedian, I always laugh hard watching his movies, so I naturally picked this book to uplift my mood and energy.
Looking at the cover of this book I thought it's going to have a serious tone, but the author narrates the book in his usual style, with full of energy and often comical. Yes, a self-help book can be entertaining.
According to Kevin, Success means achieving your goals, which this book aims to teach.
This book is broadly divided into 3 parts. Before you focus on achieving goals, 1. Let go of your negative qualities - comparision, anger, blame, self-judgement and others. 2. Tune your mind to be positive by weilding the weapons this book offers like, consistency, reliability, non-reactivity and others. Now, it's time to achieve your goals with 3. Practices such as, visualization, discomfort, self-challenging and others.
This book teaches basic common sense, nothing ground-breaking but it has a unique style of delivering the content. Often kevin drops shiny golden nuggets of wisdom out of his butt. Enjoy!!
I am a huge fan of Kevin Hart's work ethic and business brilliance. He's an entertainment mogul, and as an entertainer myself, I look up to what he's accomplished. Scandals and all, Hart is a juggernaut.
I'm not a fan of self-help books. I've read several, but they always seem to be authored by people who are successful specifically because they write about self-help, not because they've attained high levels of achievement in other fields. While I'm sure Hart got paid well for this book (it's an Audible exclusive), it's not like he needed the money to write it. He seems to genuinely want to share the elements of his approach that have made him successful and happy.
I loved this book. It's current, reflecting (briefly) on the present state of social media, the vast amount of online hate, real-world hate, and how anyone can work to tune down those influences (not eliminate them, mind you) in order to focus more energy on personal goals.
Hart works hard. He shares how he has accepted his failures, learned from them, and moved on. He's not offering pie in the sky advice. He gives a specific plan for ways to start improving your outlook and overcoming obstacles.
If you are a writer, actor, comedian or a creator of any stripe, I can't recommend this book enough,
This book doesn't cover anything new. It's mostly of the same advice all self-help books cover:
- Plan ahead - Be responsible for your own actions - Don't seek approval from the external world - Work everyday to be better than yourself from yesterday
That said... the delivery is HILLARIOUS. It's a great alternative way to listen to good advice.
This is a short audiobook, an Audible exclusive, actually. Kevin Hart is one of my absolute favourite comedians. He is known for being an extremely hard worker. I’ve heard him, previously, credit his mother for showing him that hard work will pay off. This is a woman who demanded he read books on a regular basis and write book reports for her! I love that woman.
In this one, Hart gives us his recipe for success. Yeah, it’s hard work. It’s stuff like “quit looking at ‘likes’ in social media because that stuff doesn’t matter” and “get out of your own way - you are your own worst critic and you will hinder your own progress “. There are plenty of nuggets of information collected from years of experience. He will mentally kick your butt into gear and motivate you while making you laugh a lot. It’s stuff you probably know already, but if you’re anything like me, sometimes you get caught up in “tasks” and stress and forget them. Kevin Hart has collected all these nuggets of wisdom here in one small package, pun intended. ;) (he’s only 5’ 4” and talks about it all the time).
Recommended for anyone who needs a mental butt kicking by someone who has actually put in the work, and wants to laugh at the same time.
[ AUDIOBOOK ] Story: 5/5 Audio: 4/5 Narrated by Kevin Hart.
As a fan of Kevin Hart’s work, as soon as I saw this, I just had to listen to it. Now, he’s gone through some serious scandals and he’s by far a perfect man, but I think he’s learn a thing or two about his mistakes and even if his way to success is different from everyone, he still gives amazing advice when it comes to building yourself up from the ashes.
This guy truly didn’t have it easy, yet he succeeded because he wasn’t willing to give up, he just took a different way of achieving his goals, whatever they may be. Stubborn as he is, he changed his perspective on relationships, business and ultimately, it grew into self-confidence and proactivity. I do admire him for always finding a new way to grow, to learn new things and to always be open-minded, even when things don’t go our way.
I’m just as surprised as you, because I don’t tend to give 5/5 but this one, man, it was filled with so many golden nuggets, that I just can’t rate it lower. Kevin is the perfect mix between serious, down to earth topics and comedy. Honestly, I couldn’t recommend it more. Make yourself a favor and listen to this gem!
Being a woman in my 40’s, I have listened to almost every “Self-Development” audiobook there is. Nothing in this book is new to me, but I am giving it four stars for the potential it has to reach the younger generation who may not devour every other book like this. Kevin gives some really good solid advice, I hope that all of his fans listen to it, including my son. Thanks Dr. K.
A very typical self-help book about building mental strength with a twist of Kevin Hart’s comedy. His “golden nuggets” in the audiobook are divided into separate 2-8 min. chapters, this makes it easier to revisit/skim on Audible.
I have not read his previous books and learned about this audiobook from Tim Ferriss podcast. I like that he was very authentic during the recording with his random farting, Pac-Man sounds, and random phone conversation with his wife in the end.
Words that stood out: - Cowboying Up (taking ownership) - Teddy Bearing (being likable without playing social games) - Put-Up-With-Ness (put up with adversities) - What-Is-Ness (accepting what it is) - Forcefield (to fend negativity) - Iconoclasm (choose your own path)
Real and simple words which made me calm, rethink and laugh .. With all the negativity which surround me these days, I think that I found some peace by listening to this book... I know that he talked about basic topics and simple solutions and that what I loved more, sometimes we just forget the definition of real actions and the simple style.. thank you Kevin
With short chapters and to the point, Kevin lays out his recipe for success, brick by brick. Makes for a good foundation, as it really covers a lot of ground, and is filled with actionable insights and bits of wisdom (Kevin calls them 'golden nuggets' and some really feel powerful). Bonus: Kevin's own audio rendering is the icing on the cake.
I don't usually like "self help" books but I figured if it was Kevin Hart, it would at least be funny. I was so right! Surprisingly, I also enjoyed the message and found the information to be very relatable and informative. This is a great book, especially on Audible!
Why 5 stars... this didn’t really give me anything absolutely new. I already have heard most of these nuggets. But the way they were delivered and the no nonsense manner they are conveyed truly spoke to me. I highly recommend this book!!
It's likely to prove very difficult, despite therapy, to erase the mental imagery of the author's oft used description of his services as akin to defaecating "golden nuggets of wisdom into your ears".
I loved this book, it's funny, it's informative, it's helpful for making life decisions for yourself. I want to listen to it again and again. Kevin Hart is a role model of success in all aspects of life. Thank you Kevin!🤘🏻
This is the person I've been waiting for to write the book. What I never knew is that that's the self-help book I I've been waiting for. It's not the message that really makes this book awesome. The message in all self help books is the same. And that's why I was questioning myself: "should I read this book?". After listening the audiobook (that's the only way I recommend this book should be consumed), I can say: "hell yeah, I'd even like to listen to it one more time". It's the Kevin itself who makes this book awesome. Man who walked the walk before he talked the talk. And omg, his sense of humor here is just pure gold. At moments, it felt like standup special.
Kev - you've done it again. Really enjoyed this book and the new words you brought to my vocabulary like "What-is-ness" and "cowboy up" and "trouble-friending." All I ask is that you circle back around and let your fans hear your PacMan sound after you've had a chance to practice it. I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for a self confidence kick in the butt.
I'm not a big fan of self-help books. Usually they're just a very longwinded way of feeding you either common sense, or some ridiculous idea that doesn't actually take in anyone with a brain. Kevin Hart's book gives you the former.
But I was hoping it would at least be funny, and to an extent it was. But unfortunately there were too few funny moments for my liking, and too much dwelling on the obvious (Hart's solution for people who procrastinate? Stop procrastinating. I'm sure no-one ever considered that before Kevin. ;) ).
That's not to say this doesn't have merit. If you are the kind of person that is motivated by people telling you to get up and do, this will certainly do the trick. If self-help books in general are your thing, you may or may not find something new here, though you'll definitely find a new delivery.
Very good. I am not usually one for self help books but Kevin Hart mixes together his comedic style and encouraging words to actually inspire me. He is sincere and honest in his approach and uses his experience using these skills which show that they actually work. Wish this was in either print or kindle form as I would like to go back to certain parts for further reference without reading the whole thing.
This was surprisingly really good! I knew it was going to be funny, but his life tips and “mental boot camp”’was very effective! If you love Kevin Hart, you’ll love him even more after listening to this!
Like I said for “you can’t make this shit up” if you don’t listen to the audio version with Kevin reading it himself... You are missing out! Great motivator this one. He has a knack of making you really feel like he’s talking to you.
The advice is not groundbreaking, though it is some common sense self help stuff everyone should hear from time to time... but O just really enjoy Kevin Hart's delivery.
A fantastic funny and light audiobook! I highly recommend it when you need a little boost in your motivation! You won't hear anything new, but Kevin Hart will make you smile, reconsider, and leave you a bit happier and quite motivated after listening to his contagious happy and grateful attitude! I personally love it!
This book was helpful and hilarious! Books like this get redundant at a point, but this kept me engaged and laughing. I’ll likely listen periodically just for a refresher and a nice chuckle. 🙂
