Twisted Fae #1

Court of Crimson

Rate this book
Abandoned. Unwanted. Orphan.

In a time of war between mankind and fae, no one ventures outside of the safety of the human kingdom. Abandoned in the furthest corner of Amnestia, in a convent long forgotten by most, Cress grows up thinking she’s nothing more than a human of horrendous skill and grace.

One moment, the quiet countryside of Amnestia where she’s been raised her whole life is devoid of any danger and the next, it’s there. Powered by a strange magical spell, a castle appears seemingly from nowhere. Ruled by a court of fae few humans had ever laid eyes on and lived to tell the tale, Cress stumbles right into the center of three royal princes. There, she discovers that perhaps she’s not a human at all, but a changeling--a fae child left behind in the ancient tradition of an extinct court.

In the face of possible execution, she better hope she’s a fae, because the worst thing a girl can be in the court of crimson is human.

What can I say. It’s like zero effort went into this.

Harsh I know.
From two authors that I know can do better.
Lucinda Dark aka Lucy Smoke and Helen Scott have both brought out some great RH in their own names. So what the hell happened?

The plot was basic, I can explain the whole thing in two lines.
Girl raised in orphanage turns 21, leaves nuns to discover magic Fae castle. Enter 3 Fae princes and *surprise* learns she’s actually a Fae changeling.

That’s it. Now far be it from me to criticise a book that revolves around the romance and relationships - that’s pretty much my life. But I need a little more than 3 unoriginal princes to keep my interest these days. They were predictable.
The emotionally cold Frost Prince
A red headed Crimson man-whore
And the dark broody prince of the Shadows
...All “Sculpted by the Gods” of course

It wasn’t even romantic, it was all about the sex really... or was it? For a book which only featured 2 sex scenes it sure did have a smutty feel. It revolved around the ”sex refuels magic” reason.
Am I supposed to be getting hot and bothered about a man who disregards a woman’s virginity and makes her choose whom to she must loose it too. That’s her only choice here?? And she goes along with it.. why? For the sake of a smut scene with zero build up.... shall I even start on the most unrealistic sex for the first time scene I’ve ever read!

So frustrating because I know these writers are good!
"The world could always benefit from more orgasms. They should be the currency of life. You want to buy some food? Get an orgasm. You want to solve an argument? Orgasm. Are you angry? Orgasm. Sad? Orgasm. It literally fixed every known problem.”
...nope didn't fix this books problems. Maybe if needed a few more orgasms?

To top it all off it had that annoying old fashioned but modern narration. Make up your mind, is it epic fantasy or is it PNR!? The words “Asshole” and “procuring” don’t belong in the same sentence!

I can’t help but wonder if the writers just thought
bang this one out without a plot or original characters. Who is this girl on the cover even!? It’s sure not the girl read about with long white hair...

I usually am not this harsh and I kinda feel like I’m attacking the authors here. I’m so sorry but like I can’t blame Cress now can I!? She hardly asked to be a weak heroine who fell at the feet of the first men she came across now did she...

Huh. Not what I expected. I picked this one up because one of the co authors writes a series I love and follow avidly.

This book was a disappointment. Nothing happens, even the supposed Court of Crimson that was supposed to be all about sex was just disappointing. They only had sex once! Sad. I wish there was a RH where one of the heroes didn't act like a jackass all the time. What was the deal with Sorrell, he got exhausting fast.

I wanted to like this but alas it was not to be.

🆗 World-building
❌ Plot
❌ Characters
❌ Reverse-harem
❌ Dialogues

An unpopular opinion once again according to all the 4 stars and 5 stars reviews… Oh well...

This was disappointing. I honestly expected more (even though the cover page is awkward, I gave it a chance and I hoped it would be good)…

There is no story here. The court is all about sex, and even then, there are only two sex scenes (with zero build-ups and the most unrealistic first-time scene ever). The rest is just pointless talking and a weak storyline. Everything is just so convenient. She wakes up in the middle of the night, finds a castle, manages to get in, is recognized as a changeling (after one of the princes was angry enough to threaten her, but still kind enough to offer her a bath because she stank of humans)…

Also, the characters were so unoriginal. There is the cold asshole prince, the man-whore prince, and the mysterious dark one. But do not worry, at least they are all gorgeous, you know the "sculpted by the gods" kind of gorgeous. The kind that makes you forget everything and admire their butts when they are discussing whether to kill you or not in front of you.

A few continuity errors here and there, like one chapter at the beginning it's described as her having long hair and then later it's short, and then later long again. A few other minor things but not really a big deal to me. I had fun :)

These two authors have come together to take us on a wild new ride in the world of Fae. In the Twisted Fae series, humans and Fae are aware of each other. That's because they are at war. Humans fear the Fae and Fae hate the humans. Cress has grown up in a convent where she has never felt like she belonged. While grateful to be taken in and given food and shelter, she is ready for her escape. She knows convent life will not be her forever. She's waiting for her birthday when she knows her life will change. She just never thought it would change in the way that it does.

For someone who has never experienced the Fae in anything but stories, Cress has no idea what to do when she finds herself in a castle full of them. Especially when three fae princes think she might be more than a mere human. She is taken by surprise with the way they act and the things they find acceptable. While she knows she should fear for her life, and in some ways she does, she also feels a connection she can't explain. She loves to push their buttons, even when she shouldn't. She's hilariously inappropriate at times.

With this being the first book in the series, I think the authors did a great job of keeping an even balance. We got to know about our characters and have their story while still learning about this new world we are in. We had plenty of action, suspense, twists and some romance. We have our bad guys that we love and our one that we love to hate. This book definitely had my attention all the way through. Now the end, I don't think I would call that a cliffhanger really. Yes we have a pivotal moment and dramatic ending but it's just leading us into the next book. I for one can't wait to see what these two authors give us in the Court of Frost. Bring it ladies!

This is an alright story, nothing special, but not bad either. I liked Cress, though there were some parts that I wanted her to fight back badly, still she was an entertaining character. The men... Well, Orion is alright, though we barely get to see him after they do the deed. At least he doesn't mistreat her and has other women to sleep with. Which is the case for Roan and Sorrell. Roan is a man whore, and I have to say that I don't like characters like this. Especially when they continue to sleep with OW after meeting the FMC. I was disgusted by Roan tbh. He and his mistress, what's-her-name. As for Sorrell, he's grumpy and apparently hates the FMC for no clear reason. He also has a bunch of lovers and one that I'm sure is going to cause problems on the next novel. I don't have an opinion formed about him because the FMC barely interacts with him.

Now, let's go to the plot. It's obvious that the FMC is special and different, though what exactly she is remains to be answered. One thing that I didn't like, and that I hate in general, is when a bunch of adults act like children or teenagers. Amira, Amara, whatever her names is, is a bully and prejudiced. She acts like Regina George but without the charisma. She believes she's to be Roan's next fiancee, but he shot her down. She'll continue to be a nuisance because Roan didn't deal with her, surprise surprise. Now I'm moving on to the next book because I want to know what will happen (also, Cress is dumb as hell for bringing Nelly with her. They threatened to kill her multiple times and she thought they would let Nelly live? She was selfish for not letting her stay at the convent).

A great start to the series! This came across as an introductory book to me where the characters and the world were established, but it was amazing. Even though the conflict was minor in this one, I still enjoyed myself and couldn't put it down.

Cress as the female protagonist was rebellious and talkative, and I'm hoping to see her become responsible and powerful in the coming books. The male protagonists had different personalities and each of their interactions with Cress were interesting. There were multiple point of views so I got an insight into each character's way of thinking.

The next book seems darker and dangerous and I'm eager to see the characters deal with the politics and power plays. In terms of romance, it was mostly lust since they've just met and I want to see how it transitions into something more.

Overall, this was a great book and it reminded me of another reverse harem book I'd read in the past. I recommend this to all RH fantasy lovers who enjoy some delicious smut.

I'm a fan of both of these authors and was looking forward to the pair. It's a fun storyline that immediately gets into it and continues to lead you on a fast, action-filled ride. That being said, it can get a little confusing at times. There is very little background or history in the world-building, so I don't know why the Fae and humans are at war. I'm still a little confused about what all happened when Cress was hit by the three princes magic and I'm confused why Sorrel dislikes Cress. It's only the first book and I know there is time for clarification on the other books, but the way the presentation of the story is going it leaves more confusion and doubt than anticipation and excitement for answers to come in the next book. I'll definitely read the next book and hope for the best.

Cress has only known life inside the convent and it is not a good fit. Abandoned as a baby she has been raised within its walls by the nuns never fitting in, never feeling at home. But now she's turning 21 and will be turned out into a country at war. A war between humans and fae. The eve of her birthday Cress is stricken by a noise no one else hears and is rendered unconscious. When she wakes there is a scent she is compelled to follow until she reaches a castle. A fae castle. One that no human has ever entered and survived. But just maybe, Cress isn't entirely human.

This is a mostly positive review but there are some mixed results in the story. It started out a bit slow. I could have accepted that if it was for world-building, history or character introduction. That wasn't really the case. Until Cress reached the castle it didn't flow or entertain. I would have liked history as to why the fae and humans have been at war and why the fae haven't easily won it since they have the advantage with their magic. I would have liked a little more history of the individual fae courts of the three princes. Why have these three been removed from their courts and set up in this castle together? What is their history together? Detail more of their personal relationship with one another. Is this a brotherhood or a necessary partnership? When it comes time to test Cress more depth would have been good. The story would have benefitted from more interaction and conversation between the princes. Orion was front and center, closest to Cress. The first bond that was felt and then relegated behind Roan because she had similar magic. Except that wasn't ever shown and even so that shouldn't have removed Orion from the story. I was not a huge fan of the power-up by the sex angle. I like romance and steaminess, this was more service the men so they have strong magic. The women were providing a service as much as the pixies (who I love) And finally, why did Sorrell hate her so? I am not a fan of hate without reason for a story device. Still, there is so much potential here for a fantastic series. The premise is wonderful. Thre's no denying that it is entertaining. There is chemistry between her and the men. Cress is the wildcard. The story can go in so many directions around her. With a little more depth this could turn out to be one of my favorite fae adventures yet.

Court of Crimson is off to a great start on this Twisted Fae series. I am a big fan of both authors so I knew going in I was going to enjoy this, and I did very much so.

The storyline itself was one that grabbed my attention, and pretty much from the start you are pulled into an action packed fun read that I could not put down until the end. However I found myself a couple of times somewhat lost, but that is just due to not much past info or history. So that being said, since this is book one, I am sure that any confusion will be cleared up in upcoming books.

So overall I feel Court of Crimson was a great first look into Cress and her story. If you are a fan of either Helen or Lucinda, you will enjoy this series very much.

Fantasy/RH

I love it when I dive into an unfamiliar author, or authors in this case and they completely blow me away. This book was a breath of fresh air. I was slowly sinking in the quicksand of Kindle Unlimited, dying slowly from all the books I couldn't finish. I read this book straight through, very consumed with the mystery surrounding Cress and her patronage. There's mystery like I said, plus three sexy fae princes, a sassy herione, and a touch of humor. I really enjoyed this RH/Fantasy. The story is easy to follow, not much world-building thus far, I really appreciate that when starting a fantasy series. The characters were vividly written, each one described with a spark of interest. The last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat. If you're looking for a new world to dive into, I definitely recommend!

I need to read the next book right now.

Fae & Humans are at war and have been for a long time so they each have long held grievances against each other. Orphan Cress (FMC) has been brought up by nuns in the human world but one night changes her whole perspective on her life. Dropping her into the grasp of Fae Lords - Roan, Orion and Sorrell. Giving her way more complications than she can handle. I loved Cress. Shes witty, funny, a bit ditzy but also smart too (yeah i know its quite a combination). This book is a flaming great read and that ending floored me. Dying for the next book

Addictive, binge worthy & exciting!

Well heck, I just finished this in two sittings! Absolutely binged it!

I loved the complexity of the Fae world, magic and especially the addition of the castle! So cool and original.

Cress had an amazingly blunt and quite rebellious attitude that had me cackling at her comments. The writing was fast paced in first person, multi POVs. Had me engaged throughout the whole book (obviously, lol).

Sassy and badass MC? Check. Smokin hot and broody fae boys? Check. An unraveling path to greatness and discovery? Uh, check.

Super keen to see where this series goes from that CLIFFHANGER!!!!

Fae tale. Cress grew up amongst humans, as an orphan raised by preists and nuns. All she's ever known is the convent, and that she was sheltered from the external wars between humans and fae, the deadly wild, otherworldly beings from another realm.

On her 21st birthday she is overtaken by a chiming in her head and a smell that lead her to an enchanted castle, where she finds out her fate is far greater than she ever assumed.

Cool read, interesting so far. Excited for more.

This book, in a word, is fast. From the introduction to the actual action, things move at a steady pace - though it doesn't feel rushed, if that makes sense. There is little build up and details are dropped with the aplomb of ashes, but it still managed to form a cohesive, and appealing, story that drew me in.

From previous Helen Scott endeavors, I recognized the wit and humor that speckled Cress's inner monologues, while the heat and searing emotion could come from none other than Lucinda Dark. I could be completely wrong about that, but somehow while I was reading, my brain decided to separated who wrote what, even though it all worked so well together. I've read author duos in the pas that didn't quite jive like they should have.

I truly enjoyed the beginning of this series, though there were a few times when it felt like scenes were dropped - as though a paragraph or two was edited out and resulted in a decided lack of flow. (Her hallway conversation with Ariana comes to mind). Despite that, it was a delightful tale full of unique magic, court politics, and plenty of lust.

Wow what an amazing book? I love reading about faes and this one does not disappoint. You have action, adventure, smexy times, and an mc who will not back down. She knows that there is more to life than that of the orphanage which happens to be runned by nuns. They are nasty ladies by the way. So when she ends up somewhere she is not makes you wonder why? Right? Well Orion, Sorrell and Roan find her and this does not go well. They can smell that she is human but something else. What else could that be? Well you also have another girl who does not wants Cress around at all. However, some things are discovered and things change. So what is up with the hot and cold feelings from the guys. So much more happens but you need to read and find out. You will not be disappointed. I loved every word and I can not wait to read the next book.

Humans and Fae are at war and times are dangerous. Cress has been hidden in a convent where she grew up never feeling like she belonged there. With her 21st birthday almost here, Cress will have a decision to make about her future. Will she take her vows and remain with the nuns or make an attempt to live a whole new life outside of the convent?

Then a castle suddenly appears out of nowhere ruled by a court of Fae. Cress ends up surrounded by the three royal princes, Roan, Orion, and Sorrell. The Fae princes don’t believe she is human, and the connection she begins to feel draws her to them. Her survival just may depend on them! Grab your copy and start this new adventure from its beginning! It very much looks like the reader will be swept up in an exciting story as Cress tried to decide what to do next!

Wow! I absolutely loved this! Cressida's inner dialogue is just hilarious and her curiosity gets her into some dangerous situations that are just such a joy to read. The world-building in this book is also wonderful and I love all the characters (except the ones we're not supposed to like, of course). I love that her relationship with each of the guys is progressing at different speeds, it leaves some romantic anticipation there to go along with the action! Literally the only thing is I wish there was a bit more steam, but the story was so captivating that I am still giving it 5-stars. I can't wait to read what comes next!

What a story that is full of twists and turns that is so original and unique. It is beautifully written with amazingly beautiful characters. I loved Cress and her strong personality. She is kind but also has a fiery spirit. Roan, Orion, and Sorrell have such different personalities but yet they are fierce and strong. They chemistry is strong and felt throughout the story. There is drama, suspense, a bit of mystery, lots of action and some sexy love scenes. It is a gripping story that pulls you in and doesn’t let go. This is a fantastic first book in the series. Cress is and orphaned 20 year old who has lived in an orphanage since she was a baby. The orphanage is run by nuns. As her 21st birthday approaches, Cress has to decide to take her vows and stay with the nunnery, or brave the world surrounding her. The world is in a war of humans vs Fae. On the night if her 21st birthday she hears a deafening noise that cause her ears to bleed. The story continues to fin out what is causing the noise. The book leaves off on a bit of cliff hanger. This was a unexpected pleasure because I went into thinking I had not read either one of these authors but come to realize I had read one of them and their novel. I found I could easily get into this one and go to this world with me being a human I realize there is danger. You are given a tale of a girl whom thought one way but will be shown something else. Cress is one we follow to see where it all takes her at times on edge with what is all around. Whom also catches your attention is the 3 princes. When they are together we are goners with their dialogue and chemistry. Being that this is the first one we are only really given a taste with you being left wanting more.

Dropped off at an orphanage at only a few months old, it’s all Cress has ever known. Now that she is about to turn 21 she must either become a nun or leave. The night of Cressida’s 21st birthday she becomes mysteriously ill and ends up wondering off and into a fae castle/fort. Cress meets the three princes in charge and they are all fascinated by her and the fact she was able to enter their castle. Humans and Fae have been at war as long as Cressida has been alive and their first impulse is to execute the human. However, they decide to take some time to figure out what happened and discover lots of secrets. I received an advance copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.

First book in a new series. Cressida has grown up in an orphanage in a quiet corner of a world where humans and fae are at war, and as she turns 21 is about to leave. However, chance encounter with 3 faerie princes means she may be more than she seems.

Plenty of fit men, sassy women, hot sex and fae politics make this a great start to the series, and it ends on a cliff hanger! Can't wait to see what happens next!

What a fantastic read and a great start for a new series. I will admit that it did take awhile for the story to take speed but when it did that's when things start to get interesting. Plenty of intrigue, drama, a bit of mystery some steamy romance that keep you hook from beginning to end. Overall a enjoyable and entertaining read so looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series. I loved this book. It was a hoot to read and addicting. It was a different take on the Fae and hard to put down. I loved Cress and the Princes. Their interactions were outright funny. The rest of the characters were fun and fit the story well. I kept reading just to see what scene would happen next and how loud I would laugh or groan. Many were hot but not nasty. The tidbits of life and court and what might be next in the series was cool too. Just a well written story that kept me reading and wanting to read more in the series.

Court of Crimson was a great read. The story has good pacing and an interesting premise; I really liked the changeling angle thrown in there.
I hope the next book has a bit more character development. The archetypes are a little stereotypical, and I don't feel as if I got to know enough about the characters to be truly invested in their fates, with the exception of Cress.
I will definitely be on the lookout for the next book. If you like fae tales (and don't mind a few f-words thrown in) this is well worth your time.

What a great start to a new series! Cress, an orphan, does not fit in with the nuns, she is different from the others and life is not easy for her, but little does she know what’s in store for her, life is about to change in a way she never predicted.

Very well written this story flows along at a great pace, I love how descriptive the story is and with a great cast of characters (I am team Orion btw) great world building which sucked me right in, looking forward to book two!
