From USA Today bestselling author K Webster comes a forbidden, enemies to lovers romance called Campfire Chaos!
I had it all. Popularity. Good grades. Cheerleading. Doting family and great friends.
Until the wrong boy swept into my perfect world and destroyed every part of it. Abuse. Drugs. Humiliation. He trampled all over my reputation and I was powerless to do anything about it. I couldn’t break free from his controlling hold. But the night of the accident changed everything.
Now I’m freed at last. It comes at a cost, though. I hurt a Hoodlum. I can’t fix him, but I can fix me. Without the monster in my life, I grow stronger, fiercer, braver.
I’m on the right track to cleaning up the mess that is my life. Repairing friendships. Restoring trust with my family. Healing from my recent, terrible past.
Everything was going to be okay. Or so I thought.
Because I have a new problem. Cal Hutton. Town’s lawless, gorgeous bad boy. A Hood River Hoodlum. My new nemesis. He wants me to pay for what I did to his best friend.
Cal thinks I’m weak and an unworthy adversary, someone he can toy with. But I’ll never allow another man to have that power over me.
I have claws now. I fight back.
This is a full-length high school enemies-to-lovers, forbidden, and new adult romance with high angst, suspense, and gutting emotion. It's book three in the Hood River Hoodlum series that will have interlinking storylines. Campfire Chaos shouldn't be read as a standalone and is the continuation of a four-book planned series that gives each Hoodlum a book. The first book in the series is the only MM story. The others, including this one, are MF.

'CAMPFIRE CHAOS' is the third full length romance book in K. Webster's 'Hood River Hoodlums' series. It picks up where the previous book left off. Spoken in 'Dual Perspectives.'
If you've not read this series, you should, it comes highly recommended by yours truly. It ticks all those boxes us readers like ticked and it might even become a favourite series of yours!!
Remember how it all went down in the last book with Charlotte? Where drugs over took her life, from her cheerleading, to her grades, to turning her back on her best friend, and under the thumb of her toxic boyfriend. Then that accident happened, and we were all left floundering screaming at the author to hurry up and give us that next book. Well here is that next book and all I can say is get ready for one crazy ride because this author doesn't hold back!! Buckle up cupcakes, and prepare yourselves.
All due to that accident and Cal Hutton’s best friend in one of the cars involved, he has his sights set on Charlotte and he's going to bring her down. He's going to make her pay! And it all seems to fall into place when he's offered a job at the high school as a pre-calculus teacher where she's redoing half a year to graduate.
Charlotte isn't that meek drugged up girl any more, she's gone to rehab and has gotten her claws back again and is trying to turn her life around.
Cal despises her and seeks out to make her life living hell, he will do whatever it takes to make her pay for putting his best friend in a coma. But somewhere along the way she starts to get under his skin. It unnerves him, it unravels him. And then HOLY CRAP! There I was getting all caught up in the light fluffy feels that this was throwing out at me to the next minute I’m thrown into a dark, gritty wtf is happening moment. No warning whatsoever that something was going to come at me. My heart stopped, nail biting urgency for someone to hurry up and help. Worrying that it was too late! What a roller coaster of a ride that became!
My heart rate hitched up a notch, my eyes speed up reading, my foot started tapping. And that there is what I love in books. Expect the unexpected with this author because she will unexpectedly knock it out of the ball park!
Review Campfire Chaos is the third book in the Hood River Hoodlums series but each book can be read as a standalone. However, I wouldn’t recommend reading this book without reading the previous book, Little Hoodlum because much of much of Charlotte’s backstory is included in that book.
It’s like I clawed myself out of the wreckage of the girl I used to be—changed, tougher, better. I’m scarred a little, both inside and out, but learning to stand on my own two feet again.
Charlotte English has had a horrendous year while she was with her shitty boyfriend, Ryan. He not only psychologically and physically tormented her while they were together, but also isolated her from her friends and family. Charlotte develops the strength to push Ryan and their toxic relationship away after a gruesome accident – an accident that not only affected her but also all of the Hoodlums.
Charlotte carelessly took someone away form me who is my brother in every way but blood.
Cal Hutton hates Charlotte for what she has done to his best friend, Terrance. With his best friend in coma because of Charlotte’s mistakes, it is natural for him to be angry and upset with Charlotte. He decides to make her life hell in high school where he joins as a Pre-Calculus teacher, but she won’t let him walk over her because of her new-found strength stemming from the torment of her previous relationship.
All I do know is I want her. In my arms. In my bed. In my fucking soul because she’s already invaded my mind and my heart.
The angst between the two led to some hot chemistry and Cal’s possessive and alpha nature would normally have me rooting for him, but this was not a perfect read for me. I love enemies to lovers trope (no surprise there) and it was so far from being well-done in this book. It had so much potential because Cal had a legit reason to be upset with Charlotte and I would have loved to see their character development from hating each other to tolerating each other to loving each other. Sadly, the build-up was so rushed in this book that Cal went from ‘I hate her’ to ‘she speaks to my soul’ in a FEW pages! It was hard not to roll my eyes at times.
“You’re not allowed to hate yourself, loser.” I bring my fingers to her chin, tilting her head up. “That’s my job, beautiful. One I take very seriously.”
Overall, this was an okay read. I only continued with the series because I love K. Webster’s writing and her books usually are winners for me, but not this series. I loved Hood River Rat which was the first book in this series, but I am not a huge fan of the second book and this book. I don’t think I’m going to continue with the series.
When it comes to her, he feels disgusting. There is so much rage in him. He is his words; they are cold and meant to sting and destroy. And his vow is making her life a living hell but he has underestimated her. It’s not like she isn’t ashamed of what she did but she’s not a coward either. She is brave and not someone to run away. She wants to right all her wrongs.
Life gave me a second chance to do better, and like a fiery phoenix rising from the ashes of her charred mistakes, I will do just that.
Told in dual POV, 1st person, it’s the second installment in the "Hood River Hoodlums" and it’s better if you read them in order. It’s enemies-to-lovers, angsty, and dark-themed (but not really that dark), still it’s better if you proceed with caution. Loved all the characters. Cal is a possessive alpha and Char is a strong girl who learns from her mistakes. By any chance, anyone knows if Jace, Garret, and Loden are gonna get their own stories or not? Yeah, the secondary characters are as good as the main ones. They all like a big family! All in all, loved it and hope you enjoy it as well!

!NOW AVAILABLE!
"We're not supposed to fit. Two fucked up people need to stay far away from each other because someone will get hurt."
This series is seriously addictive and i just want more and more of this crew!!!! K. Webster knows very well how to hold your interest in high levels, even when there are happening some unrealistic things!!! God, I'm freakin' obsessed with the Hoodlums and the English clan!!!! I believe that I will be extremely sad when this series will come to an end!!! If you haven't pick up these books yet, you don't know what you're missing!!!
"Fear can be debilitating. Don't let it cripple you."
Well, the truth is that i didn't see Cal and Charlotte to come out as an item, since Cal was a silent force in the previous books, but i was craving Charlotte's story like a crazy person, after what was happening in her life in the previous book!!! I needed redemption for many reasons... I wanted her life to be back on track, not only for her, but also for the people around her... And after that ending on the second book, i was sooo anxious to receive this story!!!!
"I'm a young woman who somehow fell into the clutches of a monster and couldn't figure out how to escape. These nightmares are my reality."
"Ryan didn't just ruin me. He ruined them too."
Well, Cal is one of the Hoodlums and he is back in town after studying away from home for four years. Unfortunately, the four Hoodlums are divided in two and two and Cal's other half is in serious danger after a reckless girl did something bad to him... Now, Cal is extremely sad, tortured and in a very pissed off mode with Charlotte English!!! He is going to make her pay for what he did to his "brother" and he has the perfect opportunity, now that he is returning back to highschool as a... teacher.
"If I didn't hate her guts, I'd be down to fuck that bitch any day of the week. But our circumstances are different. I don't plan on fucking her. I just want to fuck with her."
Charlotte's life took a very ugly turn when she let Ryan get his claws on her... I was soooo sad about everything that was happening to her and at the same time, so angry with her for not fighting back... In the present and after everything that had happened to her, Charlotte is trying to get her life back on track, in every aspect, but a certain Hoodlum is always in her way and he is demanding her attention in order to place his hurt and hatred upon her... But Charlotte is tired on others to have a hold on her life and she is about to show that she has claws after all!!!
"Life gave me a second chance to do better, and like a fiery phoenix rising from the ashes of her charred mistakes. I will do just that. Rise."
"Cal Hutton is going to destroy me. I can feel it. It makes me a certain kind of crazy to crave every painful second."
Well, what started as a full of hatred relationship turned out in a lust feast thing!!! Both of them had other thoughts for the other until they realized that they were getting under each other's skin... So in here, we were having a really strange connection full of steamy moments... The only thing that was a little bit strange to me was that even though their relationship could be described as forbidden, i was seeing them and anyone else not to bat an eye on this situation!!! And even though it would seem really strange in the real world, i didn't have any problem with this situation in this fictional world...
"Run, English. Run so far away from me. It's your only chance." "I prefer to run into the fire, not away from it."
"What is this thing between us?" "Chaos... Unsafe and crazy and out of control. And I don't ever want it to end."
Well, for once again, near to the end, Mrs. Webster made me lose my mind!!! The things that were happening in here had me on the edge of my seat and my heart was beating wildly in my chest... And i was wondering... What the hell is happening and WHYYYYY???? But thank God that in here the author have closed loose ends that were necessary to be handled and i was so happy for that reason!!!
"I rose from the ashes and became more. Something he'll never be able to destroy again."
And now, I can not wait for Terrence's turn!!! After everything that happened to him, i can not really wait to learn more about him... Of course, I would love for Penny English to be his pair, even though it would be really strange since their circle is too small and everything is happening in between this said circle, but hell, I loved Penny so much and i loved the way that she was giving the black Hoodlum shit without an actual reason... But the epilogue got me confused for good!!! So, I'm waiting impatiently for the next book!!!
"I'm afraid you're going to rip my fucking heart and soul out. That I'll be left an empty husk when you finish with me. I've lost so much because of Terrence. If I lose much more, I won't be me anymore."
***I received an ARC for the exchange of an honest review***
Campfire Chaos follows the main characters Charlotte and Cal. In the previous book we witness the decay of Charlotte, head-cheerleader, smart, applied in school and on medical track to college. After getting into a relationship with sketchy Ryan, a cop's son, she soon becomes entangled in an abusive relationship, she gets addicted to drugs and slowly pulls away from her friends and family. At the end of the book she is in a bad accident that heaves Terrence, the last of the Hoodlums, in a coma.
In this book we watch the fallout of that accident with Charlotte finally free from Ryan's abusive clutches, going to rehab and trying to rebuild her life. Cal is Terrence's best friend since kindergarten. He takes his coma really hard and tries to hold a grudge against Charlotte although he knows the context of the accident and that Charlotte didn't do it on purpose.
As with the other books, this book explores a lot of dark themes: - police brutality - abusive relationships and drug abuse - rape / assault - psychotic behavior - teacher predatory behavior towards a student
Cal ends up becoming Charlotte's Pre-calc teacher as she has to redo her senior year of high school. We see much more of Charlotte's sister Penny in this book who is freacking hilarious. I can't wait to read her and Terrence's book next.
The plot was well executed and the romance was really nice as well. I liked that we get to witness Charlotte's struggle with guilt, shame and Ryan coming back to haunt her like the psycho he was. I also liked Cal's struggle against his attraction towards the woman who essentially put his best friend in a coma. The conflict at the end was very good but gruesome and hard to read about.
5 thinks I really didn't like: - There is one explicit scene with Charlotte bent over Cal's desk that was just gratuitous and didn't belong; I hate it when authors just insert random scenes to check them off the list; - Cal and Charlotte weren't exactly hiding but no one at school did anything about their teacher/student relationship although it is a big No-No; - he called her "my fucking girl" 25 times (drove me insane) - he often called her loser - after the debilitating conflict at the end (not gonna spoil it), things got back on track between the main characters in a week (a bit too quick considering the intense drama)
--- TWs: drug addiction, police brutality, assault, predatory behavior, stalking, rape, arson, high level of violence, abduction, attempted murder. Safety: 4+ explicit scenes; kink: humiliation, pain play, light BDSM. ---
Hood River Hoodlums series - inter-connected standalones - Hood River Rat (Book 1): 3.5 stars - Little Hoodlum (Book 2): 3.25 stars - Campfire Chaos (Book 3): 3.75 stars - Hood River Zero (Book 4): 4.5 stars
NOTE: I don’t think this series is a standalone series. Yes, each book focuses on the journey of two distinct people, but the hoodlums are a unit. They are a brotherhood that stand together. Always. I think you will do yourself a disservice if you do not read all the books and, in the order they are published. Just my two cents. Do with them what you will …
At this point I hope everyone has heeded my advice of reading these stories in order because if you have, then you are jumping at the chance to read Charlotte’s story right now LOL (or at least you should be)!! A huge chunk of the who/what/where that is Charlotte is introduced in the previous book so I seriously recommend you read Little Hoodlum before you venture into this book.
GAWD ALMIGHTY this was a good story! I mean for real you guys. K Webster outdid herself with this one. Okay, so like the story was moving along with all the normal tension and #feels you might expect from a storyline such as this one when … *blank stare* the rug is pulled and you are just flying without a net. IT HAPPENS SO DON’T BE FOOLED lol And that is what catapulted this story to next level wtf**ery!! The chemistry and the hate/love combined with the push-pull was enough to make me scream, in a good way! I love that these stories are told in dual POV. It adds a whole other dimension to the characters that you can’t put on paper. The reader has to feel it and the best way to do that is by being inside the character. These two were explosive and I loved every minute of their story!
With the shocking ending of Little Hoodlum, I am more then ready for Hollis’s sister, Charlotte’s book! After a terrible accident, Charlotte English is now on Cal Hutton’s radar. He is one of the Original Hood River Hoodlums and wants revenge for what happened to his friend. He thinks she is just a weak girl but she is so much more. What can Charlotte do to find herself again? Can Cal and Charlotte find a common ground or has what happened ruined all their lives forever. Cal is in for a shocking surprise for his feeling towards the enemy. This was highly anticipated and did not disappoint. Cal is such a jerk but it is understandable and poor Charlotte for what she has gone through. They were oil and water in the best possible way! I loved this story and getting to see all our favorite characters back. This also has some darker themed parts to it that might be triggers for some. Campfire Chaos is what enemies to lovers books are made of. Oh and someone has a certain piercing 😉 Told in dual POV
This was such an emotional book with a damaged but strong asf heroine and a hero looking for revenge but instead he finds true love, this series is now one of my favorites ever is so freaking GOOD!!! Love that we get to see how everyone is doing specially Roan and Hollis my baby’s !!
Fav Character > charlotte Trope > enemies to lovers
>>>>>>>....>>>>>....>>>>>>
After finishing Little Hoodlum I was all KINDS of needing to get my hands on Campfire Chaos, I was also a tinsy bit worried as well because this is K Webster and one never knows just where she will take things...and things were about to get all kinds of crazy (so the title was perfection). But I shouldn’t have been worried at all because I loved where these characters took us. The crazy was still there, but the evolution of Charlotte was everything I never knew I wanted it to be and more.
I ADORED Charlotte, probably not something I would have said while reading Little Hoodlum, but now it’s a different story. I really enjoyed watching as she took responsibility for her actions and then took action to ensure that she got her life back on track. I loved her heart and her strength and how she didn’t back down from anyone. Cal. He is a dirty, ruthless hoodlum with a huge heart. His loyalty to the Hoodlums was intense and I loved how all in he was no matter what the situation was.
Cal and Charlotte’s journey to their HEA was all kinds of fun. Kind of a strange thing to admit considering we all knew going in that the angsty-ness was probably going to high since it did slide into the enemies to lovers trope, but crazy enough, the angst wasn’t all that craycray as I thought it would be. I loved watching as these two went toe to toe with each other and came out stronger for it on both sides of the line. It also made for great foreplay and opened both of their eyes to just who the other was and why they were perfect for each other.
This was, ultimately, a fun read. There are some things that in here that will be triggers for some, so reader beware. But outside of the drama and craycrazy, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. I loved catching up with Hollis, Roan, Roux and Jordy and seeing how their relationships are evolving. Penny is simply AMAZING and I love Jace and Garrett ~ yeah, I know considering neither would have won the father of the year award upon first meeting them, but now...OMG they are all kinds of awesome. And then there is Rhetta, Loden and Tierra...ugh so many characters to love on! I know that the next book is supposed to be the last in the series ~ and I’m making full on grabby hands at it ~ but I’m crossing my toes that spinoffs/standalones...something will happen because they all need their own HEA’s!

Ok it’s more like 2.5 stars. This book just really pissed me off y’all! You’ve been forewarned rant ahead:
-NO ONE WOULD BE CHILL W A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER OPENLY FUCKING A STUDENT. DOES NOT MATTER HOW OLD SHE IS HE’S STILL A FUCKING TEACHER -BDSM can be great for abuse survivors but I think it’s important to have explicit conversations about power exchanges and the fact that they’re happening. This wasn’t a HUGE sticking point for me in the book I think it’s just important to point out -ok, barely enemies to lovers -WHY ARE ALL THESE 20-SOMETHING MEN SO HUNG UP ON HIGH SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOLERS -IDK MAN THE WAY CHARLOTTE WAS DESCRIBED IN SOME SCENES MADE HER SOUND LIKE A FRIGGIN HIGH SCHOOLER WHO SHOULDNT BE FUCKING A 20-SOMETHING YEAR OLD. SMH SMH
PENNY WAS THE ONLY REDEEMABLE CHARACTER AND I HAVE SOME HOW MADE IT THROUGH THIS BOOK SO I CAN NOW GO READ HER STORY. I hope it’s friggin worth it bc I clearly have some feelings about this one!!
Ok, but for me personally there was some stuff in this book that grinds my gears (I’m sensi about student teacher stuff). The story is still entertaining, classic Webster spice and angst, I just did not like this teacher student dynamic bc the guy was so fucking entitled about it.
Oh, also, the cover feels lowkey misleading bc honestly stuff gets ~dark~ in this series. Like defo check the trigger warnings!
The epilogue in Little Hoodlum (book 2) left most of us in shock. What would happen to Terrance? Was Charlotte okay? Why was she still dating that asshole?
This begins where the last left off by answering some of those questions but you have to read the book for that. Then there is Cal. An original member of the Hoodlums and completely nightmare to Charlotte. He blames her for what happened to Terrance due to her driving the night of the accident. She spends a large portion of her time trying to atone for what she did wrong. While dealing with not having Terrance in his life, Cal focuses on other things. He begins to get curious about Charlotte and admits that he always found her beautiful. Their subsequent relationship grows out of forgiveness and the ability to find themselves amongst the crap life throws at them. Unfortunately, Charlottes past comes back to haunt her.
Okay, this book is really quite dark. I'd say anyone with trigger issues may not like bits of this. However the love story in it is amazing. Cal finally acts like an adult and becomes an wonderful man. In a lot of series, the books tend to go down in quality as the series goes on. But that is never the case with K Webster. This is just another example of how incredible this series is.
CAMPFIRE CHAOS is the third book of the HOOD RIVER HOODLUMS series by K. Webster. This series is truly one of the most amazing series I have ever read and it has quickly climbed up to my 'favorite series' list!!
This is the story of Cal and Charlotte. This is the continuation of the other two books of the series and is not a standalone as all the plots are linked. I have read the second book of the series and know how much Charlotte truly suffered.
When I read the LITTLE HOODLUM , my first opinion of a Charlotte was a bit bad, as she was very rude to everyone around her. The drastic change in her behavior gave a me a whiplash. But this book covered all the aspects of her redemption.
In the staring we get to meet Charlotte who is Hollis's sister. It is truly painful, how much a bad boyfriend can destroy you. Charlotte was the living example of that. I don't think I have ever hated anyone as much as I hated Charlotte's ex. He was such a disgusting person. He broke her whole life including her friends, her dignity and her spirit. He changed Charlotte and forced her to turn her back onto her whole family and all her friends. That was a really dark time for her. However , she managed to get rid of her Boyfriend , but in the process she destroyed a Hoodlum.
Cal is the town's bad boy with complete perfect looks and a whorish personality. Charlotte's mess up puts her on Cal's radar. He made it his lives's mission to destroy her. And man he truly did some stupid things to achieve that goal. Both of them were broken in their own way.
I absolutely loved their journey of redemption and true love. It took some time, But Cal finally saw that the girl before him was already broken and was trying to mend her life. He saw her real personality and couldn't help but fall in love with her!!! Both of them were perfect for each other and For me, this was the best book of the series.
Campfire Chaos is a full steamy read of second-chances , bully-romance and redemption all-in one , and is recommended to all the dark-romance lovers!!
The Hoodlum crew is back with Cal and Charlotte's story. It's a student/teacher, emotional and super sexy love story. This series has me hooked and I cannot get enough.
Charlotte royally screwed up her life. Swept up in an abusive relationship left her completely ravaged. Her ex took so much from her and left her with a broken heart and her life in shambles. Now she's trying to dig her way out of the black hole she got sucked into. She knows she messed up. The fall out from her actions left her a devastated mess. And the boy she hit with her car is left in a coma.
Charlotte's trying to make things right. She's gone to rehab, she's finishing her senior year, she's working to be a better friend, but Cal won't let her forget that she put his best friend in the hospital. He is determined to make her suffer until Terrence wakes up.
Cal is hurting from the loss of his best friend who may never wake up. He wants to lash out and Charlotte is the target. Now he has even better access when he's given the job at the high school teaching pre-calculus. His star student now gets his full attention, even if she doesn't want it. Charlotte is going to have to avoid him as best she can. Cal's going to do his best to make her pay.
This is a story of owning your mistakes and taking your life back. Charlotte felt weak, but she was brave and strong. She fought back against her ex who tried to continue to take what she wasn't willing to give. She was resilient. This girl got knocked down more than once but continued to get back up swinging. She didn't shy away from her mistakes. She took them head on and made amends. Cal made her life harder, but it wasn't hard for her to win him over. They had an attraction that just wouldn't quit. Cal was a force and he was all alpha possessive when it came to her. It was HOTTT! He's a man that finds what he wants and doesn't let go.
This enemies to lovers romance brought the drama and the twists. I read it in one sitting because as this story unfolded I became more and more invested. You'll get to catch up with your favorite hoodlums and meet some new characters you will want to know better. This has become a series I look forward to as each new story releases.
If I could give this book then 5 stars, I most certainly would. This book was completely everything I was expecting and not expecting at the same time. From the moment that I started this book, I literally could not put it down. I will say it time and time again, this series has completely sucked me in without no doubt and I am loving each and every character that we are introduced to, although my most favourite part about this series is watching each Hoodlum get brought to their knees by love.
If you haven’t picked up this series yet then you definitely should be reading this series. This is a series of characters and their world that you’ll want in your life.
Campire Chaos is book three in K. Webster’s “Hood Rivers Hoodlum Series”. This book picks up from the very last chapter in the previous book. The devastating ending that completely floored me and left me a weeping mess.
The devastating ending where drugs completely took over Charlottes life. It had become her new source of living, her coping mechanism. Not only did the drugs take over her life but it took over her cheerleading, her grades, wiping her best friend Roux out of her life, and being held like a prisoner through the crutches of her toxic boyfriend.
Then the accident happened, like I said it completely floored me and I didn’t expect that accident to happen in the most brutal way that it did. To be honest I was cursing the author and begging her to give us the next book ASAP as I needed to know what was gonna happen next.
Now that this book is here, let’s just say you better buckle up and hold on tight for the wild ride ahead. It’s not an easy one, it starts of with so much hate and anger but soon blossoms into something that lessens the hate and turns into a beautiful love story.
All due to the accident that happened that night, Cal has harboured this bitter hatred towards Charlotte and he has his mind set on seeking revenge on what happened to his Bestfriend. His going to bring her down and make her pay and he won’t let anything or anyone get in his way.
Cal may think that Charlotte is some weak daddy’s girl but she isn’t that drugged up, meek, shy girl she once was. Life gave her a second chance to do better and like a fiery Phoenix rising from the ashes of her charred mistakes. She’s rekindled that fiery, sassy and has found her backbone that she once lost.
I for one loved watching this unfold and how she had come back fighting even harder for who she once was.
On Cals Path on trying to destroy Charlotte, along the way lines has become blurred and the question that he asks himself “Why can’t i seem to hate Charlotte like I want? Is it Because we’re much more then enemies turning into lovers? “.
Whenever these two are together they are like a explosive magnetic being pulled towards each other. They wreck each other’s worlds that in a way all they can think about is one another. These characters are two people besides all the hate and guilt harbouring inside, they belong, they connect, they are perfect for one another.
Just when things are an all time high, things come crashing down where they find themselves amongst the chaos that life seems to throw at them. Charlotte’s life comes crashing down in a spiral that comes back to haunt her. We are then pulled into a world of dark and grit, a moment that just completely had come out of no where. At that moment it gutted me, I was left thinking why is this happening to them again. It was a crazy ride that I was hoping that someone could get there in time before it’s too late.
I’ve enjoyed every story so far in this series but I have to say that this one might be my favourite one out but all could change when we get the next book in this series.
Bravo! K really out did herself with this series. First of all, the books are intertwined. You get live updates on each and every person. As the story grows and changes, so do the characters. The other thing that is just phenomenal is the pace. The story line is filled with action, cliffs, obstacles and celebrations. You go through so much in each story.
This is not your average high school young adult book. There are some pretty complex and heavy adult situations. The sexy time is definitely rated R, but it all works very well. Each character brings a layer of depth to the story. It's worth the cost and time to read. I loved this book. I can't wait for Hood River Zero. I was rooting for Terence and now we will see more.
K if you are reading this can't Roan have an affair with Loden? That would be super hot!
I'm a picky, picky reader. I only read what I want to, when I want to. This is why bloggers amaze me!!
Anyway I had been in a book funk so I went back to one of my faves. Author K Webster War and Peace series. And then I was in the mood for more K Web. Luckily she has like 100 books.
I saw these covers with each release and had to get them, but didn't read. Why? Don't know!!
Omg they were phenomenal!!! It got better and better. I haven't been this addicted to a series in a long, long time!!!
Grab them! Seriously! So good! I'm finishing this one now and already feel empty. Book 4 comes out at the end of the month, then I really don't know what I'm gonna do with myself!!!
Amazing!!! Heartbreaking! Never ever boring and believe me it takes A LOT to keep my attention!!!
Too much slut shaming(to evey girl who wasn't hoodlum) and victim blaming(to Charlotte). I don't know how women read this shit and not take offense to the insults to our gender.
It was clear that Ryan raped Charlotte multiple times by feeding her drugs. Idk what even the point was of all this shaming.
Literally anyone who was anyone kept asking her why she "Let Ryan do this?" LET? WTF DO YOU MEAN LET HIM? PEOPLE DONT LET ANYONE ABUSE THEM. ITS DEEPER AND MORE COMPLICATED THAN THAT and even a kid knows that nowadays.
K. Webster was a cool author specially for dark romances but I guess being respectful to women is too much to ask.
“Every look is a promise. So many vows loaded into his stare. Declarations that I don’t deserve but he keeps throwing at me anyway. And, like the greedy girl I am, I collect each and everyone of them.”
Cal Hutton is the towns notorious badboy. He’s also a Hood River Hoodlum and he has his eyes set on his enemy. Charlotte. The girl that crashed her car into his best friends vehicle and put him in a coma. This is a story about how sometimes you don’t get to choose who you love because love chooses for you. And sometimes love chooses someone you hate.
“Charlotte…” His brows furl as he drinks me in. “I’m fucking terrified of you.” My heart stutters in my chest. “Why?” “Because you’ve hurt me so fucking much and I still want you. This power you have over me is wrong. “
Charlotte’s story is more than just her crashing her car into someone else. She’s had an abusive boyfriend that has controlled her and manipulated her for their entire relationship and sometimes, despite her going to rehab, thing are always what they seem.
Charlotte desperately tries to get control of her life and Cal ends up being one of her teachers at school. He can’t help but want to do dirty and horrible things to her. They start playing a game. Of humiliation, cruelty, with some pain. Charlotte gets off on it. She also feels like she deserves whatever Cal gives her because she feels horrible about what she did to his best friend. Cal absolutely is disgusted with his emotions and how this girl turns him on like no one else has before. He feels like he’s backstabbing his BFF who’s been in a coma and may never wake up.
It’s a kinky and taboo relationship student/teacher and enemies/lover romance. Cal and Charlotte were made for each other. Once they get past their issues, they still have more to fight for before they can find peace within their relationship. And that’s over Charlotte ex-boyfriend and his friends who keep findjng her and taunting her and threatening her. Tons of drama and emotions are running hot!
4.5 STARS to the KING OF CHAOS and PARASITE QUEEN!
Campfire Chaos is the third book in the Hood River Hoodlums series. A little recap if you are not familiar with this series.
⚫ Hood River Rat - Is a M/M romance, which is Roan and Hollis story. The other books in this series are M/F romance. I personally have not read this one, it is a TBR for me. Although the story lines connect throughout the books and sequentially there is foreshadowing for other characters, I still found it easy enough to understand references to the ups and downs Roan and Hollis went through and how they are connected to the other characters. However, certain plot points are built on one's from this book without much background in the others, so bottom line I would recommend reading them in order. Side note, literally my heart swells each time I read how they care for Sebban. My heart, ahhhh. ⚫ Little Hoodlum - This is Jordy and Roux story. Jordy is one of the hoodlums, whereas Roux is Roan's little sister and "younger" hoodlum. I absolutely loved their story and highly recommend you check it out. The way this book ended had me on the edge of my seat, needing to know what was going to happen. Is Charlotte staying with Ryan ? Terrance is he ok????
Honestly gearing up for Campfire Chaos, I needed to emotionally prepare as the ending for Little Hoodlum left me a hot mess.
Anyways, Campfire Chaos is Cal and Charlotte story. This book picks up exactly where Little Hoodlum left off with the devastating car accident involving Terrance and Charlotte. I blew threw this book, I could not put it down at all. I was so hooked to see how this story was going to unfold. Originally, when I read the synopsis it gave me a bully love story trope vibe as the main H would torment the main h for the wrong she did and pay for her mistake, but I was shockingly surprised to see a different dynamic between Cal (main H) and Charlotte (main h). Yes, Cal taunted Charlotte with his words and acted like a alphahole at times but he never pushed her away or pushed her too a point that was too uncomfortable for Charlotte. For me it ended up being, a broken soul finding an angry one where they can live together as one by finding peace within each other. Cal and Charlotte had a deep connection and developed a beautiful friendship to let go of demons and pent up anger.
What I found so captivating about this book is Charlotte's re-claiming of herself. Although Charlotte carries a lot of guilt with feeling like the villain in the beginning of this book, she is not. Unfortunately, she is as much of victim as Terrance. Just another fallen victim to Ryan, which I hated him so much for everything he did. Ryan was a character who lived his life without consequences and felt he was untouchable. But he messed with the wrong people, Hoodlums do not take easy to those that hurt their own. Ryan may have reduced Charlotte to a shell of her self, but he did not get the gratification of fully breaking her. She wanted to reclaim her self and with Cal by her side pushing her (within appropriate boundaries) and others, she is able to be herself again. Ryan may of worn her down, but she rose again.
With that being said, WARNING this book may be triggering as there are descriptive domestic violence flashbacks, past/present rape and sexual assault scenes.
My only complaints with this book are I wish I saw more interaction between Roux and Charlotte and the "taboo" aspect should of been flourished a little more. Roux and Charlotte friendship was damage due to Ryan manipulating and controlling Charlotte. Their friendship bounced back when Charlotte decided to enter rehab and work on herself, but it never came back to how it was in the beginning of Little Hoodlum. I wish there was more meaningful conversations discussing their friendship and things surrounding her toxic relationship with Ryan. As for the "taboo" aspect, Cal is Charlotte's pre-calculus teacher so when that plot line was introduced I was waiting for student-teacher relationship taboo. Some students made comments to Charlotte but nothing that really brought it out as a taboo. It was a little bit of a let down for that, but still it did not deter me from this story.
Honestly, I am really loving this series. K. Webster knows how to emotionally sucker punch a person, holy shit. Her books are written in a way that they are raw, gritty, emotionally charged. However, there can be lighthearted moments and laugh until you cry moments (like Penny about T's head hahaha) woven into these drama filled love stories. I cannot wait for Hood River Zero!
Campfire Chaos is the third installment in the "Hood River Hoodlums" and in this installment we have our heroine, Charlotte, who we see at the end of book 2, get some new hope in her life after being brutally used and abused and just becoming a shell of who she used to be. We see her figure out her own strength, see the consequences of her actions, and move forward on becoming better and the woman she was meant to become. We see the trauma of what happens to Trey, and how it affects Cal and that he is determined to torment the one that put him in his position. But through a turn of events, Cal and Charlotte end up falling for each other in such a brilliant way. But there is still a evil that would like to destroy them.
I really liked Campfire Chaos, it was so deep on the emotion and I adore the fabulous character struggle and strength that we see in the story. I loved the bantering that happens between Cal and Charlotte and while I wasn't a big fan of them still doing it in the end, it seems to work for what the author is trying to portray in this series so I didn't mind it too much, just would have loved to see a bit more softer moments between them. I found some things in this book to be so unbelieveable though. The teacher student aspect just seemed so watercoated, it wasn't portrayed as so forbidden. I mean students were catching them left and right and even the principal and it was just okay haha no way that happens in reality. I just wish those aspects were a bit stronger.
I did love the ending though and the way in which this book wraps up. I wasn't a fan of Penny though so I am on the fence on whether I want to read Trey's book because I do not like spoiled brats lol but I might just skim through the parts I don't like, I am not sure how she becomes redeemable for me but I will probably wait a little while on it. We shall see.
Overall I had a blast with Campfire Chaos and I am eager to see more of K. Webster in the future!
Campfire Chaos is the third book in the Hood River Hoodlum series and K. Webster knocked it out of the park! With every book, the series keeps getting better. This is Cal and Charlotte’s story.
We’re left with a cliffhanger in Little Hoodlum when Charlotte was in a horrible car accident involving one of the Hoodlums. Being with Ryan has really messed up her life. She’s determined to make things right but Cal isn’t going to make it easy for her.
You want to hate Charlotte for all the careless decisions she made with Ryan and yet you feel sorry for what she’s lost. You want to hate Cal for being a complete jerk and bully but under the circumstances, you can’t blame him. Both of them fighting against the odds only brings them closer. It’s hard to do when she’s all Cal thinks about. When he makes Charlotte feel things she’s never had before.
“Cal doesn’t kiss like a normal guy. He kisses like he’s making a statement. Proving a theory. Passing a law. All you can do is sign on the proverbial dotted line. Moan in agreement. Accept his dominating kiss and all his unspoken words.”
Their journey is a tough one. This book will take you through the ringer.
Penny makes her appearances quite frequently. Saving her big sister when she needs it most being a total badass or cracking us all up. You can’t help but love her. She deserves a book all on her own.
I’ve enjoyed every book but this one is by far my favorite and I can’t wait for Hood River Zero, the next book in the series.
Hold on tight because this journey is about to take one helluva of a turn and it’s getting so deliciously dark it will give you all the feels.
You know the crazy wild writing Ms Webster is so good at, well, she delivers it in spades in this third instalment. Campfire Chaos (Hood River Hoodlums Book 3). Forbidden enemies to lovers romance this story will shatter you, slowly dragging you down into darkness and chaos.
Charlotte and Cal are an explosive duo. Strong and resilient they face challenges head on, they won’t allow anyone to stop them. Charlotte is a real Phoenix rising from the ashes, Cal is protective and I love how he fights with her rather than for her, he pushes her, stretches her boundaries to give her back her freedom and be whole again. It’s awesome to see how their love grows and expands.
Since this is book three of a series we continue to catch up with the other characters and can enjoy their company, the awesome banter and satisfy our desire for more, I’m getting so deliciously addicted I’m sorry this ride is coming too soon to an end.
From what I can see of Penny and Terrence I know their story will swipe away any remaining pieces that barley hold my heart together.
Oh, Mr. Hutton! I think I’m in love! I know, what a shock. 🙄 Anyways. Our previous books kind of touched in these characters, but this book blew the whole thing wide open. I’m going to have a hard time picking a favorite couple when this is all over. Calvin is mad. No. Furious. Charlotte has ruined things, and he’s not having it. Charlotte has made a TON of mistakes and is reaping the consequences of those choices. I got mad. I got glad. I was sad. This book took a good bit of my emotions out of me, but in the best way. I really wanna move to Hood River(minus all the snow) & snag me a hoodlum.
At the end of Jordy and Roux book i wasn't excited to read Charlotte's book because unfortunately i didn't like her behavior and her choice's..
I knew this will be emotional, what happened to her in that book would stick to her all her life. Unfortunately she end up being in a situation bigger than her and like Roux she didn't ask for help even if she had friends and family around...what Ryan did to her, it's what a lot of sh*tty bf do in real life and she didn't fight enough to get out of that situation . Being drugged, being basically his wh*re and pet...avoiding all her family and friends..being scarred because that dumb fu*k beat her/rape her and so on...at the end of the last book we are left with the car accident , where Charlotte lose the baby and Terrance was in critical condition and he ended up being in a coma with low chances to survive.
Anyway Charlotte grow up on me instantly , she finally open up, she finally asked help, she chose to go to rehab, also we found out that Ryan forced her taking pills, and that's what made me forget her bad choices and also because she was a minor, i can't totally blame her for being that naive.
The blurb led us to believe Cal will be bullying her but he did not, he did treat her a little bad but not enough to make her suffer, at the end of the day he is suffering because T is his best friend since they were kids and i felt so bad and emotional with him and scarred with him if T will gonna wake up or not. He is a broken soul, he feels alone since Roan have Hollis and Jordy have Roux, he only had T...so he toke it harder than the others. He tried to be bad with her and blame her but at the same time he couldn't deny how pretty and beautiful she is,he decided to have fun with her and don't fight the attraction.
He surprised me a lot, i didn't aspect him being so funny, so amazing and so possessive and protective ,dang I ADORED HIM,I MELT FOR HIM and wow, i think i liked him more than Jordy...what he did to Ryan with the blade made me crack up , i couldn't believe how crazy he is and another thing i loved was that he wasn't afraid of anything he did ALL HE COULD TO PROTECT HER and i loved that. I'm saying that because i was so damn frustrated that in the last book Jordy couldn't do a thing without being put back in jail so it kind of su*k seeing her saved by others. Cal have nothing to lose, i loved their connection, it's so deep and i love how good they are for each other,i adored them. Charlotte is fighting, i admired her for getting better and also how she handled things, i love this new Charlotte,Cal made her stronger.
Now, why i didn't give the last star..
- i thought we will see more of her and Roux, but nope, only a few scenes but nothing deep, i expected to see them rebounding , talking about all that shit happening to them ..but no.
- i thought it will be a bully romance but no, then i thought will be a taboo with Cal being a teacher but no, they were out in the open, i think the author could play more on that.
-the not safe part happened i hated it with all my heart , i get pass that only thanks to Charlotte because she fought back , not enough to be saved but she did... but still i wish it didn't happen.
-i thought Cal and T will be more mean to her but no, even T immediately accepted her before even finding out she didn't do it.
Over all i still loved this book, i just wished for more. I absolutely loved Penny and Therry oh and Lodin 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Now i have a big problem with T, who will he be with? at first i though maybe a beautiful taboo with the cousin ( in k. Webster amazing way) then i thought he is a perfect match with Penny but i see Penny being good with Jace too ahahahaha, lol i'm conflicted, and the last one? i wouldn't mind seing T with LODIN ahahahahah it will be funny just please not with LACEY. PLEASE. that ending gives glimpses of something i don't like, i hope he will be with one of the 3 i said above :( please :D
Oh btw i'm still kind of pissed that Roux and Jordy book was more about Charlotte's and others drama than them as a couple. I think a lot of scenes from that one should be in this one and added more there Jordy and Roux off pages times :(
anyway. I LOVED SEEING HOLLIS AND ROAN AGAIN :d I LOVE THEM TO DEATH.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I had to get this book especially after how the last book ended with the accident.
During this book we watch the struggles of Charlotte as she is trying to fix herself. Then Cal he is so angry but he can't just hate Charlotte he ends up loving her. Ryan and his father are still evil in this book. The things they do will justice ever come? Hmmm?
Penny OMG I love her and her mouth, I really hope she is loved to be with Terrance and not the other woman mentioned. Now poor Terrance, can't wait to see what is in store for him.
“Cal Hutton is going to destroy me. I can feel it. It makes me a certain kind of crazy to crave every painful second.”
NOTE:This is the 3rd installment in the Hood River Hoodlums series and CAN be read as a stand-alone, however it’s best to read the previous two first.
My first true intro to K. Webster was a little sneak into this series (through the Bully Me anthology this year) and it was evident early on she had what it took to become one of my all time faves. It was abundantly clear that in Hood River Hoodlums she had created what was possibly my favorite new series of 2020. So when I saw this one drop, I broke all my plans and rules and skipped over everything in favor of diving back into the world of Hood River. Charlotte wasn’t one of my favorite characters originally, however she is the one I knew I could truly relate to the most (having been in an abusive & controlling relationship) so I was eager to see what kind of impact she would make with her story and if it could keep the 5 star streak going for this series. Well what do you know, Webster continued her 5 star streak and delivered another installment in a series that seriously just keeps getting better and better. Charlotte & Cal’s story was so much more than I thought it would be and introduced me to some new characters that give me hope my fave 2020 series won’t be ending with Terrence.......I am addicted, obsessed, in love, over the moon... ......insert every other word that describes being totally consumed by a series and that’s me. The storytelling is THAT phenomenal. Charlotte & Cal absolutely stole my heart with this one.
Book Facts: Told in: Dual POV, all present day with some time jumps to the future to progress the story. About: This is the third installment in the Hood River Hoodlums series, a group of interconnected stand-alones that centers around a tight-knit group of guys (& their loved ones) and their town of Hood River. It is an emotionally charged, suspenseful, and angsty enemies to lovers/forbidden romance that features original Hoodlum Cal and Charlotte (Hollis’ little sister) on their journey of tragedy and healing through each other. Triggers: Miscarriage, domestic abuse/violence, sexual assault/attempted rape, drug addiction, extreme violence against woman, rape, graphic violence. Ends in: HFN-ending with epilogue that teases next installment (Terrence).
The Main Players: Cal Hutton: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cal Hutton is an original Hoodlum, having been away from Hood River the last few years at college. He has the closest bond/friendship with Terrence, who is involved in a life-altering wreck that leaves him in a coma with little chances of recovering. He blames Charlotte and thus begins his mission to absolutely destroy and break her like she did Terrence. But the more he pushes, the more he realizes he wants her despite how wrong it may be. He is the town’s lawless bad boy, a gorgeous playboy who is a love and leave em kind of guy. He is loyal and protective of those he loves but is ruthless when it comes to those deserving of his wrath. He is absolutely my favorite dirty talker of the bunch and was very close to knocking Jordy off his Top Hoodlum pedestal.
Charlotte English: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Charlotte English is the younger sister of Hollis (Roan’s husband) and best friend of Roux, the once popular head cheerleader who lost it all due to an abusive & controlling boyfriend and a drug addiction. After a near-fatal wreck results in one of the Hoodlum’s being left in a coma and her miscarrying, she vows to get her life back on track and never let anyone hold that power over her again. She feels extreme guilt over Terrence’s current state, and despite Cal’s anger towards her she can’t help but feel drawn to him. She is a fighter and is determined to fix herself to atone for what she did. She is brave, strong, and fierce but still struggles with the aftermath of her abuse. I loved the fact that although her road isn’t easy, she refuses to give up or break. She was an inspirational character.
What I liked: Authenticity of the Abuse/Drugs Aftermath: I appreciate the way Webster handles the abuse and drug aspect of Charlotte’s recent past. As someone with both issues in the past (in a similar way as Charlotte)..... “Ryan didn’t just ruin me. He ruined them too.” .....it felt authentic and well researched. I felt Charlotte’s pain, it didn’t feel like a gimmick used to make the story more intense.
Nothing is “Easy”: I loved that nothing was easy. Ryan doesn’t just disappear bc that’s not how abusers do in real life. Terrence doesn’t just wake up when everyone wants him to..... “That boy loved to sleep in. Couldn’t keep a job if it was a morning one because he’d always be late. Always missed the bus and couldn’t get to school on time.” She sighs. “And yet here we are again. Me telling his big ass to get up every day and him not listening.” Charlotte just doesn’t “get over” her abuse or drug problems, continuing to have triggers. It’s all hard bc it’s supposed to be, it makes it feel more real.
Cal & Charlotte Steam: I was obsessed with how Cal and Charlotte are together. It’s dirty and depraved but also tender and caring when necessary.... ....I loved that he knew what she needed when she needed it and didn’t judge her or act like she was “sick” for liking the things she does despite her past. Like with the safe word, it’s not a D/s sort of thing but Cal’s way of helping Charlotte regain her control and power sexually...... “Please,” I beg. “Please say it for me. So I can love your body like a normal fucking person. Pull the motherfucking leash, baby. Please.” .....He pushes her hard but it’s with complete love and gives her the safety of that one word, to not only give her the power to stop BUT to also give her what’s necessary to try to move on.
New(er) Support Characters: The characters that are being introduced or given more “screen time” fill me with hope that this series will continue after Terrence (or at least a spin off). From the ultimate super blunt/no filter badass Penny.... “It’s my business because I rule this school. What I say goes.” “Like the mafia?” Penny deadpans. “Are you a mob boss, Helen?” .....to newcomer and regal take no crap queen Tierra..... “Yuck, Cal,” the voice gripes. “Put that weapon away. I’m not one of your peasants. I am a queen.” ....to absolute sweetheart yet horndog broken rockstar Loden (the way he affectionately calls Charlotte “baby” is one of my fave things ever)..... “I hit rock bottom and ended up in rehab. I met you and you just get me, baby. Unlike Mena or Dad or anyone. It’s nice when someone understands.” He flashes me a wolfish grin. “Now can we have butt sex?” .....and even overprotective alpha daddy Jace.... ....all made me WANT this series to never end.
The Climax: Like always, Webster is able to bring it all to a heart stopping climax that breaks your heart while also giving you a reason to cheer on the Hoodlums to prevail. It’s like you know what’s coming yet you aren’t prepared for the way she delivers it.
Series Development/“Flow”: I love how each installment continues to tell the ongoing story of the whole group.....it might be centered around two specific characters BUT she doesn’t forget the others as well. The way that Webster has made this series into one that feels like I’m watching a reality show is a nod to her magical storytelling ability. It isn’t far fetched or over the top, every single element has a unique purpose and only adds to the story.
The Verdict: As I’ve said before, this is my top new series of 2020 and Cal & Charlotte further cemented that with their beautiful, emotional, and delightfully dirty installment. Each installment is equally unputdownable for very different reasons yet they all have one HUGE thing in common, they are 5 star worthy reads. So if you either haven’t started the series yet OR just haven’t dived into this installment, what are you waiting for? There is NO way you want to miss out on the characters of Hood River.
“In case there was any doubt, you’re mine.” His words wrap around my heart and squeeze. “There was never any doubt, Cal.”
K Webster’s Hood River Hoodlums are back with Campfire Chaos-the third book in a series of interlocking stories. While each book focuses on a different couple- it is important you’ve read the others- they build on prior plot points without much background- and this one in particular immediately jumps in to the end of the last book with the heartbreaking accident involving Charlotte and Terrence, giving us the story of Charlotte and Terrence's grieving best friend, Cal.
I really waffled on my review of this story, which is unlike me- mostly because it wasn’t really the story I was expecting it to be. I was expecting a bully story- where we have a rough and tumble a-hole alpha guy torturing a girl who he thinks wronged him. And, this wasn’t really that. Sure, Cal SAYS he wants to torture Charlotte- but he never really does, other than occasionally throwing some hurtful names at her. She disappears at the height of his anger, and his attraction to her, her lineage, plus some other looming danger very quickly outweigh any “enemy” type action. He’s mad, it plays out when they get physical, but that’s about it. It felt more like old friends, with some baggage, to lovers. I was also expecting a story of redemption, with someone who has lost her way, the Charlotte who we saw in other books, and again, this wasn’t quite that. Because even before we know the full story, we do know enough to know that Charlotte is as much a victim as T- so it’s less about her learning and evolving to redeem her actions, because she’s a victim, too- and more about her reclaiming her old self. Charlotte does RECLAIM herself, and this particular part of the narrative is beautiful and bittersweet - even though most of this shift in her happens “off book” in time passing- we only really see the before and after.
The “taboo” piece also wasn’t really here- which was the only part of the book that frustrated me because a student-teacher relationship screams taboo. Cal’s her teacher, and we get a few random comments from other characters about this being a potential issue- but other than that, it doesn’t FEEL taboo at all. They are openly affectionate in front of family, at school events, even AT school. Students know about the relationship, he’s possessive about her with other teachers, and her parents know about it- everyone knows. NO one seems to care or even comment on it. This just felt….weird- sure, she’s 18, but she’s still a student.. This took away from the forbidden aspect for me, because no one was really hiding anything. I had to really suspend disbelief on this element.
But, expectations aside, I thought about what this book WAS vs. what I thought it was going to be- bully, taboo, etc. And, I did enjoy the book or what it actually is- a story about two very broken people with an inexplicable and undeniable connection seeing kindred souls in one another- and the love that helps heal their hurting hearts, confronting the outcomes of their pain: Cal’s anger and loneliness, Charlotte’s lostness and shattered inner strength. The enemies/bully/taboo just doesn’t play out here like I thought it would- but the love story I still enjoyed, I was still enthralled by. Their connection is soul healing- RAW, dark in places, sweet and tender in others. And through their opening hearts, they find the pathway to an individual catharsis- the damaged, miserable cheerleader becomes an authentic, self-assured woman, and the broody, hoodlum bad boy with a chip on his shoulders emerges as a compassionate, generous, and forgiving, partner.
The writing style is most certainly all the things we love about K Webster- intense emotional energy, fast paced action, blush-worthy steam, gritty and unexpected twists. The ending was a bit of a sucker punch for me- I’m used to K Webster hitting us with some DARK-DARK crap suddenly, but even then, I was still thrown- perhaps because the book hadn’t been that dark up to that point, perhaps because I wasn’t sure if it was needed, but mostly just because it is really tragic and painful. TRIGGERs everywhere. I should have known K Webster would smack me when I got too comfy.
This series is just so fun and gritty- the characters are SO interesting, so well painted, so dark yet adorable all at once. K Webster has created a delightful little world and the charming, tight knit hoodlum family that inhabits it just keeps sucking me in for more drama, more unexpected love, and more of the jaw dropping moments K Webster is so adept at delivering. Loving this series!
