The Casella Cousins Novella 1: Hayley

She drives him crazy in court. He’s the most irritating, self-absorbed defense attorney she’s ever met. What happens when a couple like this goes from enemies to lovers in one moonlit night on his boat?

Assistant District Attorney Hayley Casella wants to tear her hair out whenever she has to argue against her nemesis, Paul Covington, in court. She’s battled the white-collar defense attorney for a year and their appearances together are only getting more emotional and tinged with sexual tension.

Hot shot attorney Paul Covington is not letting DA Casella ruin his chances of becoming a partner in the prestigious law firm he joined last year. She’s a looker and smart as hell, but he’s as determined to show her up as she’s determined to put him down.

This heartfelt legal drama is backdropped by the glamor of New York City galas, restaurants and boat trips on the ocean. Will Haley and Paul be able navigate the murky waters of competing careers and baggage from their childhoods to make a life together?

Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."

4 star Review Hayley by Kathryn Shay

Kathryn Shay is a new author to me and how I have not come across her books before, I have absolutely no idea. This is book one in her latest series and I was excited to jump in. The writing was strong, with characters that were easy to relate to and a story line that you cannot help but become invested in.

The chemistry and connection between Hayley Casella and Paul Covington is electric and you could almost feel the tension as it increased between them, both in and out of the court room. Both are successful opposing attorneys, each determined to win and as they pit themselves against one another, sparks soon fly.

Both Hayley and Paul have family issues which will create problems for them, however if they both take a chance then maybe they will find that love can overcome anything that life throws at you. .

This is an entertaining read that ticked the boxes for me and I am excited to see what Ms.Shay has in store for the series.

I have been a fan of Kathryn Shay's work for a while now. I have firefighters in my family and that's what first drew me to her writing. This is a new series spun off of the Hidden Cove series. This first book is about Hayley. This is a small snapshot into her current life and also gives background information about her and her family. Hayley Casella is an ADA in New York City. She is a good lawyer and usually can keep her composure in the courtroom. As I said "usually"; that is until she and Paul Covington are head-to-head again. They start making snarky, under their breath, comments at and about each other during the trial; most unbecoming in trail lawyers. The Judge won't tolerate it and they are thrown into jail for contempt of court. This is how the story begins. It's a great springboard for the rest of the story.

This is a well-written, quick read, and a great story.

This is first book in the Casella Cousins series. This one is about Hayley and Paul.
We see the cousins that will follow in the next books.
Haley and Paul are both lawyers who are up against each in court.
the sparks fly and they fall in love. They both have painful pasts
I liked the storyline, two wounded people who help heal each other.
There are a lot of characters which I am sure are going to be in following books
I really like MS Shay's writing --- Really looking forward to next ones

I thought this book was a bit flat and lacking spark. I didn't believe the main characters had any chemistry together and thought the wrap up was too convenient and quick. I also didn't think Hayley had any right to be mad at Paul for his family issues.

Not my cup of tea.

When Hayley and her professional nemesis are thrown into jail for contempt, it sparks a tentative truce between the two lawyers. Her an assistant DA and he a defense attorney who defends the kind of clients she can't stand. But spending time together reveals the attraction they tried to deny, and soon the two are unable to deny it any longer. But these two have more differences than just professional - the family kind that make for loads of baggage. Is that baggage too heavy for a relationship to survive?

Although the premise of this story is interesting, I'm afraid the execution left a little to be desired. I didn't feel a strong connection between Paul and Hayley, and the tone of the story is oddly old-fashioned. I also didn't particularly care for either of the two leads, especially Hayley, so I can't in good conscience give this higher than 3 stars.

The chemistry between Hayley and Paul was evident from the get go, with their court room battles more like foreplay. On opposite sides of table, these two very often end up facing off against the other and the sparks fly so much so that they end up jail overnight.

It was inevitable that these two would end up together but there are challenges that they need to face along the way relating to their families. Whilst Hayley is close with her brother and cousins, she has an indifferent relationship with her mother who thinks everyone else is beneath her and tries to control those around her, to the extent that Hayley's oldest brother left home and hasn't been seen in years to escape. On the other hand, Paul made some decisions when leaving for college that did not go down well with his father. This has left him estranged from his whole family ever since.

Whilst Paul is very passionate and open about his present, he keeps his past closed off and won't talk about it. Hayley is open with her feelings, her past and the issues that she has with her family, which causes conflict as she wants to know more about Paul including his past.

This was a fantastic opener to this series and I definitely want to know more about the rest of the family. I was engaged right from the get go to the very last word and Kathryn Shay left me wanting more from this set of characters. It was well written with well developed and likeable characters that had me wanting their HEA. Looking forward to the next in the series already.

Like many of Kathryn Shay’s books, there is a strong sense of family woven throughout this story. Paul Covington is feeling the keen sense of loss from his estranged family and Hayley Casella appreciates the family and extended family that she still has.

Both of these protagonists are attorneys; Paul is a defense attorney for a prestigious law firm, while Hayley is a prosecutor with the DA’s office. They have been adversaries several times in court, and have always rubbed each other the wrong way. During their most recent court case, the judge puts them in jail overnight for the way they behave toward each other. They finally end up talking and getting to know each other for the first time, as they are stuck together during their long night in jail. This leads to another night spent together and a renewed appreciation of each other... Unfortunately, they have a few obstacles to overcome before they find an HEA ending.

This book is centered around the themes of family, career, forgiveness, and finding the path to redemption and acceptance. Ms. Shay always writes about complex yet engaging characters who have issues that they need to face. These two flawed protagonists fit within that framework. It’s a bumpy journey, but they eventually get there. Ms. Shay defines their conflicts, then tells a tightly-woven story and compels the reader to keep reading. The ending is unexpected and beautiful.

Kathryn Shay is a relatively new author to me and I was excited to join her at the start of a new series rather than playing catch up, I love small town romance so Hayley and The Casella Cousins is right up my street and let me just say this book did not disappoint, it was a great start to what looks like a hit series for this very talented author.
Hayley Casella is the Assistant District Attorney and whenever she finds herself in court arguing against lawyer Paul Covington she wants to tear her hair out, this man drives her mad, he is annoying and frustrating and he normally gets her so riled up she ends up in trouble with the judge. Well you know what they say, there’s a fine line between love and hate and opposite’s attract so is this hate she is feeling or maybe it’s love....
Paul Covington is looking to make partner at the law firm he works and he is not going to let an attractive ADA get in his way, if he has to show her up so be it ......
Problem here is this couple are actually attracted each other and they both have feelings they can’t seem to get past, again is it love or is it hate. Guess you need to read the book to find that out.
This was an entertaining read that drew me in from the first page and didn’t let me go until I had read the final line. I adored the characters, I loved their story and I’m looking forward to book 2 in the series. Great job

Ms. Shay is the author of a wonderful series about the town of Hidden Cove & it’s Casella Family. Now she’s started on a new series about their cousins. Hayley, Finn & Ronan are siblings that had each other’s back until Ronan abandoned them. Now she’s the ADA in New York & fights for the underdog. She treasures each win, especially against her nemesis Paul Covington. They strike sparks off each other anytime they have to interact.

Paul is happy to be back in New York. The law firm hired him away from a firm on the West Coast that he was a rising star at. He can’t understand his behavior when he comes up against ADA Casella. It’s like they are in elementary. He refuses to let anyone know about his past, especially Hayley. She wouldn’t understand, not after what her older brother did. When Paul’s past & present clash, can he overcome his hurt & shame? Will Hayley understand & forgive him?

I really enjoy Ms. Shay’s storytelling. Her characters are well defined, enjoyable & relatable. The plot moves at the perfect pace with enough detail to keep you reading. I loved the cameos from the Hidden Cove families. It was nice to see how it all fits together. These stories can be read by themselves but by reading them all, you get a better understanding. I can’t wait for Seth’s book & to learn more about Ronan.

3.5 Stars- Slow Start for Me

Hayley is the first book in the Casella Cousins series. While we focus on Hayley and Paul, we are also introduced to the rest of the family.

Hayley and Paul are both fantastic attorneys that can't seem to stay out of trouble when arguing cases against each other. After one judge has had enough of the back and forth between them, Hayley and Paul end up learning they might just kind of like each other. Let the whirlwind romance begin.

I felt that Hayley and Paul had zero chemistry, which made for zero angst in this book. I wasn't a fan of either character and they didn't seem to grow on me as the book went on. I don't need sexy time on every page, however these two lacked any type of connection in my mind. All they seemed to do together is complain about thier respective family problems.

The book is a little stiff, but a nice start to the series with the rest of the cousins introduced. I will continue with the series, as it seems like some of these cousins have a pretty interesting story to tell and I'm sure we'll keep up with Hayley and Paul along the way.

Hayley Casella is the Assistant DA for New York City and Paul Covington is a defense attorney and these two clash in court and end up in contempt and in jail. There they find out a bit more about each other than just what they known by just butting heads in the courtroom. They eventually start a relationship that is rocky because of a lot of outside forces; and they both have to decide if they are strong enough to do what is necessary to be together.

This author brings her A game for the start of a new series and as usual the plot is so very well put together and flows nicely, the hero and heroine compliment each in a way that one doesn’t overshadow the other one. There is a good balance between Hayley and Paul. There is fun humor and great secondary characters in both their families. There is a bit of sadness in each of their family history but in the end this helps bring them together. The story is strong, kept my interest and kept me turning the pages as I read this in one sitting. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Hayley, Paul and their extended families. I look forward to the next story in this series. I highly recommend this book by this very favored author.

As an assistant district attorney, Haley Casella wants to fight for what's right. Defense attorney Paul Covington wants to win. As the two continue to spar into court, the gavel is dropped on them. When they are forced to spend some time together they realize that they may have more in common then they think. As their worlds continue to cross paths, they try to fight the attraction that is there. Will they put their careers above themselves. Due to an incident, Paul becomes a public figure which throws another challenge for them. Both characters have some serious family issues that they have to face if they can even consider a future. This first book in the Casella cousins series set up the series pretty nicely. As with a lot of Kathryn's book, there is a strong family dynamic. What I like most about her books is that the family issues are relatable and she writes characters that can face these challenges. Although at times you want to groan at the characters for what they do and say, you become invested in the story and want to learn more. I can't wait to learn more about the Casella cousins.

“Hayley” (The Casella Cousins Book 1) by Kathryn Shay

What a an enjoyable read. I love that younger Casella’s who have grown up before our eyes now have their own stories. While this novel seems as if it were a love to hate novel, it really is not the case. It is more the story of two passionate lawyers who fight inside the courtroom, yet suddenly realize all that arguing and intensity really comes from how much they enjoy being with one another.

While the author continues to bring the cousins and extended family together on a regular basis, she also expands on the main characters, Hayley and Paul, very well. The storyline is interesting as she writes backstories of each main character that are relatively similar, yet with just enough difference to keep it interesting. She brings the forefront what the Hayley and Paul truly dream to be practicing as lawyers, and how they might make it come true. Yet, the author continues to evolve the lives of all of the characters in the novel, major or minor, and brings forth many surprises.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

This was a completely enjoyable story. I was drawn into the Casella cousins from the book, "Take Me Back, Hidden Cove Firefighters #9", featuring Rafe Casella. Hayley Casella is an ADA with the City of New York. She prosecutes alleged criminals that defense attorney Paul Covington defends. The two strike sparks off of each other and it shows in court. A judge has had it with the two and sentences them both to a night in jail for contempt.

How these two deal with each other is a story that kept me glued to my e-reader. Having a glimpse into each of the characters' thoughts, really helped me to understand their actions and speech so much better. It was almost like I was right there with them.

I adored this story and look forward to the rest of the Casella cousins!

This story is a sexy one. The author does a great job of leading the characters into the scene without being overly graphic. That being said, I would only recommend this to anyone over the age of 18.

Hayley - The Casella Cousins bk 1 by Kathryn Shay
I have been reading Kathryn's books for a few years now, and have about 60.To be honest, the characters in this book appeared in a previous book Take me Back a Hidden Cove bk 9 to my shame I have not read. (Next book to read);)

Kathryn 's unique way of writing draws the reader in from the very first page and you feel you're there too.

I enjoyed this touching enemies to lovers romance with endearing characters and a great story that kept me entertained and engaged from beginning to end.
I loved the dynamic way Hayley and Paul get a long, thecwsy they conspire in the court room. Paul with his secrets from his past. The way Hayley and her cousins get along , you can picture the scene while reading, it's that good.

I would definitely recommend this book and look forward for the others that will follow, excellent first book Kathryn, thank you for letting have an advance copy, this was my honest review. 5*+

Hayley enjoys her job as a prosecutor as it allows her to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves and she is a force in the courtroom. In her latest battle against her nemesis they both find themselves charged with contempt and having to explain to their bosses what happened.

Paul is a defense attorney and even though he may not always like the clients he has he believes that everyone deserves a defence. Every time they are together the sparks fly whether they are arguing or giving in to the chemistry between them.

Not only do they find themselves on different sides of the law, but they are both dealing with complicated family relationships that is starting to affect their relationship as well. The only way their love will survive is through trust and helping each other heal from the past. Not only are Hayley and Paul complex characters but after meeting the secondary characters I am looking forward to their stories as well.

Hayley and Paul are on opposite sides in the court room and neither wants to be on the losing side. When they end up being forced to spend time alone together for an extended period, they get to know more about each other and there's an attraction there. Although their cases get changed so they aren't going against each other and they both feel it's best to stay apart, they aren't able to do that. Hayley is open about her feelings, beliefs and family situation but Paul isn't willing to open up completely and let her know what has happened and where things stand with his family, not even after he's thrust into the limelight. When an olive branch is offered to him by his family, he then realizes he wants another chance with Hayley. There is a HEA for them but it takes some work! Ms. Shay seems to always write stories with strong family ties and great support. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.

This spinoff from a previous series, gives us the Casella cousins.
This first story belongs to Hayley Casella. She’s a NYC ADA, who for the past year has been doing battle in the courtroom with up and coming attorney Paul Covington. A thorn on her side. But in the midst of that antagonistic pull, there is also an attraction. One, that after spending a night in jail together, they decide is worth giving a try. Even though they can’t come out in public.
But Paul has secrets and a past he hides. While Hayley’s childhood was one filled with hurt and feelings of abandonment.
Will they reveal their fears? Will they open their hearts? Will Hayley understand that decisions Paul made when he was young might be ones he wants to fix?
This was a good introduction to the series. I see many good stories in the future.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

HAYLEY...Kathryn Shay
The judges cringe when they find both Hayley and Paul in their courtroom.
Contempt charges rarely happened against lawyers, they got one another in trouble, when together. The courtroom drama continued and giving them a night in jail, compliments of the judge’s warning of what would happen.
Their immediate bosses understood what happened, others in their office didn’t and thought they should be dismissed. Even Hayley had her mother’s disapproval and words that she was like her father.
A delightful comedy of two grown successful lawyers acting like teenagers, when they work together. Instead of a parent saying play nice, they had a judge. Delightful to read, and still chuckling at the two of them
Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

I cannot get enough of the awesome Kathryn Shay, as I'm utterly addicted to her stories. Hayley is the first book in The Casella Cousins series, and boy am I here for it all! ADA Hayley Casella gets really frustrated when she goes against defense attorney Paul Covington in court, so the sparks are always flying when they go head to head. And he's not about to let the ADA stop him from making partner in his law firm so their interactions are quite entertaining as they try to bury each other. That chemistry they have won't be denied forever, so how long will it take these two enemies to become lovers?! You'll have to hit those one click buttons to find out! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, secrets, pain, and heartbreak.

This is Hayley and Paul’s story. Both Hayley and Paul are attorneys. So, they spend their time with each other arguing that is until one judge in particular has had enough. The banter back and forth was good, but the relationship felt forced. You should be able to feel the chemistry and these two didn’t have it. You get plenty of side characters that keep you interested and invested in the story but overall Paul and Hayley need a little work.

I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

Hayley Casella, Assistant District and attorney Paul Covington battle against each other in court. They seem to bring out the worse in each other. It took one judge throwing them in jail having enough of their courtroom room antics for them to realize that their is an underlying reason for their antagonism with each other.

As their relationship develops they have some real concerns that they have to address and overcome to see if a future together is a possibility. I liked Hayley and Paul together and enjoyed the banter they had in the courtroom.

I really like that many of Kathryn Shay's books deal with the dynamics of family. To, me, those are the most heartwarming.

I think the book Hayley is a great start to a new series. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Climatic & fascinating. These two are a ball of fire inside and outside the courtroom. Their story has more depth then just their pent up frustration and determination to win another case. Getting to know one another brings out another layer of tension to their courtroom rivalry and drama. I like Hayley, she's a very strong independent character and family-oriented, I also like Luke he has the same values, both of them have emotional family baggage to sift through but together they become a team to be reckoned with.

Hayley is book 1 in the Casella Cousins series by Kathryn Shay an another good book by this author.

Hayley and Paul are two attorneys on opposing sides of the table, get under each other’s skin but sparks fly too. When they end up in jail together they discover they have a lot in common but it seems that obstacles out side of court could be issues too...

Family dynamics, forgiveness, attraction and a fine line between love and hate are just some of the things happening but will they find a way to over come the obstacles or will they remain adversaries??

Hayley The Casella Cousins book 1" by Kathryn Shay is a great to start to a new series as well as a page turner. This story is about Hayley & Paul Covington. Hayley is ADA and Paul is her nemesis in court. When the judge has had enough of the lawyers bickering in court he send them both to jail overnight for contempt. They start talking to waste the time and have the start of a friendship. Paul has secrets about his family, whereas Hayley has strong family ties and doesn't understand whats going on with him and his family, Since he doesn't want to share.
Can Paul open up about his past and get the girl? Read this great story and find out. Cant wait for the next in the series.
