From bestselling author Willow Winters comes an emotionally gripping, standalone, romantic suspense. Now a USA Today bestseller!
It was only a little lie. That's how stories like these get started. But every lie I told, he saw through it. I think in his heart he knew I was broken; he felt my pain as if it was his.
And that's what changed everything. He's the reason it all fell apart.
Sometimes it's a single moment that alters everything in existence. Sometimes it's the fall of dominoes, lined up in a pretty little row and designed so that each one will cause more and more pain. In a single day, it's all changed, and there's no way to take it back. I didn't know what would happen. But secrets and lies ruin everything.
"I was captivated from the very beginning, and I couldn't let go until the very end. Winters wove an outstanding tale, which has an even better message within its pages." - Kendra @ Reads and Treats
Willow started writing after having her little girl, Evie, December 2015. All during her pregnancy with Evie she continued to read and she only wanted to read romance. She was reading a book a day — sometimes two.
In January 2016 Willow was staying up late with Evie and just thinking of all these stories. They came to her constantly so she finally sat down and just started writing. She always wanted to do it so she figured, why not? Today Willow cannot be happier for making that decision!
While I was reading the book, I get a major vibe of Promising Young Woman when it comes to the plot device not so much in the storyline execution, Anyhow It's Our Secret is a compelling and evocative tale of Allison Parker who become haunted by her past and how much it implicates her future.
How far are you willing to go, for the sake of keeping one deadly secret? Are you ready to forfeit your happiness for justice and revenge?
“I don’t give a fuck what you call it, Allie. As long as I’m running with you, that’s all that matters to me.”
The story of Allison and Dean has been revised from the previous version.
I am not going to dive in deep with this but I will say... This is extraordinary and probably up in my favorite books by this author.
Allison and Dean and the whirlwind relationship will have your emotions on overdrive. Mine were strung out to dry and I found myself a blubbering mess throughout the entire book. This side of Willow Winters's writing isn't so much as dark but it is emotional and captivating, it still holds that intense, gripping, all-consuming plot that I couldn't pull myself away from. I was completely consumed by these two... This book deals with some hard, raw, and real issues that could be triggering for some. I didn't see a lot of it coming, and that is a true Willow book, she will have you thinking one thing but the story will take you in the opposite direction and have your mind spinning in all the best ways and this book did just that.
It's a MUST READ and one I believe a reader should go into with little to no spoilers.
Sit down, grabs some tissues, and enjoy the emotional ride will surely capture your heart like it did mine!
I couldn’t like this book and I can’t quite pinpoint the reason. There was just something there I couldn’t connect with 🤷🏻♀️To be honest, I don’t even know what to say here 😅 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It could have been the heroine, but after I read the part of revealing the Big Bang of the story, I sympathized with her a little... or it could also have been the countless sex scene there with no depth. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind sex in my books, I love hot well written steamy sex! but I do mind when books are only about sex... but then the story did deal with some heavy themes... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So yeah... I have no idea what I can about it but I do know this book wasn’t for me and those reasons annoyed the hell out of me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So yeah... I have no idea why but I do know this book wasn’t for me.
I had such a great time reading Winters's first installment of the Irresistible Attraction series, so when I saw that It's Our Secret was available for free on iBooks, I knew I had to read it, especially since I was in the mood to read a stand alone. The bickering between Dean and Allie was *chef's kiss* and very much appropriate for college students, it did not seem overly childish or too mature for their age. And with the knowledge that they were once involved with one another, it definitely adds on to the complexity of their characters as we try to figure both of them out as the story goes on.
Compared to the only other book by Willow Winters I have read, I would say that It's Our Secret is definitely on the spicier side of her work. This is new adult, but it really does read more so like an adult novel in the sense that I think the dynamic between Dean and Allie would have worked better if they had already graduated college, rather than still be students.
I do have to say that Dean and Allie's relationship definitely went from 0 to 100 very quick, so much so that I felt as if it was done over the course of a nine page chapter, and then all of a sudden they were fooling around with one another. Since the book is on the shorter side, I should have expected some quick revelations, but it just was not having the pace that I expected.
There is a ton of mystery surrounding Allie and her past, especially when it comes to her self confidence and the way that she chooses to present herself to people. Dean's backstory is more fleshed out from the beginning and it makes the reader more interested in his character than in Allie, at least in my opinion. We really dive deep into Allie's past as the story approaches the third act, and it definitely adds much needed insight on her character and on the choices she makes.
The chapters are super short, which makes the story fly by so fast that at some points I was not even sure if I was processing what was on the page before the point of view changed or we were somewhere else in the story. Allie's emotions are all over the place and I felt like I was going to get whiplash from the amount of times she would change her mind about Dean or about the way she felt about anything that became an obstacle for their forming relationship.
Allie has a death wish like girl what in the world where you thinking??? She really saw a potentially dangerous situation and said yes, this is exactly the plan I need to finally get closure. Girl be so serious for two seconds and think about the hundreds of ways things could go wrong before just walking in blind and hoping for the best, because that clearly worked the last time. I was truly perplexed on how she thought what she was doing was going to end up going the way that she wanted it to, without any repercussions.
I am still confused on what exactly the genre for this book was supposed to be -- romantic thriller? Romance with a hint of suspense? Contemporary? Honestly even after finishing the book I am a loss for how to categorize it without leaving out some of the aspects of the story. It had a strong beginning but then slowly became a touch choppy as we approached the third act, which felt as if it flew by, and then we were at the end.

Dean was a young man who had lost his father at 15 and felt that he was not loved by his mother who took a new husband not long after his father died and if that wasn't bad enough he was a military guy who drank too much and like to take his anger out on Dean. Dean felt the only person who loved him anymore was his Uncle, who was his mother's brother. He left home and stayed with friends and his uncle until he was old enough to be on his own. He got into trouble one of his Uncle friends sponsored him with the money to go to school. Allison was a young girl who was hurting and mad at the world because she could not stop her best friend Samantha from taking her life because of her being raped at a party they were both excited to go to. If that was not bad enough, the young man who raped her friend got off. After her friend dies, she goes to stay with her grandmother and stays with her until she passes and then she moves to the city where the University is located with a plan in mind to get vengeance for her friend Sam. Then in an instant plans change and lives change. Allison notices Dean and Dean notices Allison and its like they are drawn to each other. Dean a broken person because he feels like he has never been loved and Allison because of what happens to her best friend. They get to know each other on the rugby field and then at her house and then at the class they were in together. They were drawn together like a moth to a flame or light. Their is so much angst in this story. At times I feel like I should be crying and at other times I feel overjoyed that they have found one another and we can see the change they have made in each other's life. This book is filled with so much drama and of course Ms. Winters writes this story of love and abuse emotionally and sexually so well. Loved it and would highly recommend this story. If you are not a Willow Winters fan or W. Winters fan you could start out with this story and you should feel like I do that the author is an outstanding writer.
I'd like to take the time out to personally thank Willow Winters for writing this book. Not everyone can take on such a taboo subject and create a work of art.
It resonated with me on so many levels. I don't think I've ever connected to characters so much in my entire life.
Those four horrible words that once held so much power are nothing but empty, hollow and useless now. Thanks to the voice you gave Allison "She asked for it" no longer means what women have been told our whole lives. Thanks to your emotionally charged and heartwrenching book I found myself feeling like I can take back control. It isn't easy to read a book that deals with this subject for me (enormous trigger) but the way you embraced this horrible tragedy and made it into a woman and a man finding each other in the midst of all the chaos is what leads to a beautiful story. If only life could be this way too.
I ugly cried when Kevin and Allison are at her house, I tossed the book across the room when he was forcing himself on her, I even felt nauseous. It took me a while to pick the book up again, and I felt so much better knowing that Allison had Dean to fight for her. If we all had a Dean in our lives I'm sure we'd all be better for it.
I'm a big believer in the whole "Books find you when you need them" theory and I'm definitely glad I found this book, I'm glad I came across your TikTok page and I'm glad I found your website and your books. Every time I read one I find a new favorite. 😀

This was my first read by this author and the first book in the series. I believe it can be read as a standalone. This was a different kind of read for me. I knew by the description it may not be my thing, but I tried anyway. I don’t want to give too many details as I don’t want to ruin it for anyone else. It was a story of dealing with hurt, grief, abandonment, anger and coming out of it all ok. These two characters were broken for different reasons and they ended up finding a love they never thought they were deserving of.
There were secrets and twists that were both expected and unexpected. The overall storyline was good. The subject matter was deep and although character intentions were justified it was hard to get behind. Dean was more likable than Allison was. You wanted him to succeed and find his happiness. Allison remained closed off for the majority of the book and because of that, was hard like. You never felt like she was being her true self until the last portion of the book. We do find out why and it is completely justified, but almost too late.
This book was just an ok read for me overall. I could not get into the story 100%, but I believe that was more a personal preference vs the writing. If you enjoy deep subject matter with characters that are broken this may be for you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I thoroughly enjoyed this updated and extended story. Bellow is my original review. Not much more that I can say without spoiling it for those who have not read it. I love this new version. Willow Winters is easily one of my favorite authors.
OMG! This book was more than I expected from the title and blurb. It was so much more and blew my away. From the blurb I had ideas of what may have happened to Allison and Dean and then when it was finally revealed (especial with Allison) I did not see that coming. This book is so well written. It makes you aware of how others may think someone deserves based on how they behave. My heart went out to Allison and all she went through and why she felt she needed to be the way she was. Dean was someone who was dealt a hard life and all he wanted was to be understood and loved. The unconditional love he has for Allison was awesome. I loved how he pushed a bit to help her understand she was worthy of love and that there was nothing wrong with her. An emotional read about love, hope and fate and how two people can get through anything if they are willing to let love in. Another great read from Ms Winters!
Okay, so I’ve read that books by Willow Winters are either you love them or hate them, I ended up just liking it.
As a clarification: I got this book as an ARC.
Now to the book.
When I started reading it I was confused. It started before the main story of the book and in two POVs (Point of Views). Telling me that something was going to happen, but never getting to it or revealing what is to come down. Then it switches to some years later (I think) and from there on you are in the main storyline.
I gotta admit that mostly what kept me to want to read this book was the need to know what is going to happen. What did Allison or Dean do that they ended up like this. Why is she acting this way? What is she hiding?
When I got to the part of revealing the Big Bang of the story, I sympathized with Allison a lot. I hated what happened and I think I would’ve turned out like her.
This story was well written, I liked it. I couldn’t honestly wait to read a book by Winters, but at the same time I was a little disappointed that this was all I got.
However because the book really represented something I think a lot of people should help to stop, I think I began to like it more.
Dean is a angry, misunderstood, and on his last chance. Allie is running from her past and the new girl in campus. They have a connection that Dean wants to pursue, but Allie would like to run from. She trusts him with her body and fantasies, but not her past. A run in with someone from her past threatens Dean's future and reveals Allie's intentions. This book deals with rape, suicide, death of parents and the effects these circumstances have on those left behind. It is well written, tragic, heartbreaking, but full of hope.
Allie: I don’t feel guilty while I cup his cheek in my hand and brush my lips against his. Not while I let him hold me. Not even as he whispers he loves me into my hair when he thinks I’ve fallen asleep. And that’s what it is. Love. I feel it too. I’m not blind to it. I even accept it although I can’t have it. I can’t have Dean. This has gone on for far too long. It’s not okay to be okay. That would be the worst tragedy.
I’m not one typically to write reviews for books mostly because I never know what to say. But this book, oh this book. So many feelings and thoughts this book caused me to have. The personal connection I felt with Allison I knew I had to write one.
Dean and Allison are two characters I will never forget. Two people, equally broken but together become stronger and learn to love one another. Their story is an emotional roller coaster. Definitely multiple triggers and can be hard for some to read but Willow did an exceptional job at writing their story. You feel like your in the story right next to them, through every tragedy and heart felt moment. You become invested in their lives sharing tears of sadness and joy, laughter and anger. The powerful message Willow is trying to portray to who ever is reading leaves you thinking deeper into the characters lives and how society is today.
Overall this is a book I will forever recommend to friends, never forget and will always keep close to my heart.
I thought this was a brilliant and powerful read when I first read it and now that additional content has been added it is even better. Allison and Dean will quickly consume you as their complex and pain filled story unfolds. Your heart will hurt for these two broken and terribly wounded individuals. This is a book that puts your heart through the wringer and sends your emotions on a roller coaster ride. This book will challenge your preconceived notions force you to think and ask yourself uncomfortable questions as you engage in a mental game of "What Would You Do" if you were unlucky enough to find yourself in this all too harrowingly realistic and heartbreaking situation. The romance element to this book as per usual is first rate. This is a couple that will have your heat bleeding and aching for them as you hope with everything you are that they get that HEA they desperately deserve. I am freely choosing to post a sincere review of my own volition.
The best part of this was the last 40%. It was so obvious what the big twist was very early on. I was still interested to see what was going to happen with it, but every monologue and conversation the fmc had with the mmc was so overly and unnecessarily cryptic and philosophical. I felt like most of if was just words put together to sound edgy without really having any impact. This would have been so much better if the reader knew everything the whole time and could follow along with Allison's thought process. I felt like Dean's pov was my pov because everytime he failed to understand what the hell was going on with her, I was right there with him. If this had been more of a thriller instead of the trying-too-hard-to-be-edgy, I'm-not-like-other-tortured-girls vibe, I would have been more into it.
Dean and Allison's story is nothing like I expected.
I don't even really know what I expected. There were some assumptions I made that were correct but only because of the predictable nature of secrets. Other than though, this blew me away.
It's passionate and heartbreaking. It’s triggering as well so please be mindful if you choose to read. I'll place the warnings at the end if this review.
Allie is a broken yet determined mess. She is full of regret and guilt so she doesn't know what to do when Dean comes along. And Dean doesn't know what makes his Allie Cat so skittish but he's determined to soothe her fears.
I will admit, I liked the Hero a bit more than the heroine. He wasn't hiding and his actions were motivated by passion and love ...not guilt.
*triggers: mentions of rape and suicide (not in detail) and then an attempted sexual assault*
"It's Our Secret" is my first book of the year. I always enjoy Willow Winters books, because the way she writes is so easy and so good. You read her books so fast.
Dean and Allison story was so beautiful. Two broken hearts trying to fix each other. Two incredible soul mates.
I fell in love for Dean immediately. He has a big heart even when he wants to hurt people. When you have a broken soul since you were a kid you don't know how to love someone. That's why I fell for him so easily. He tried every single moment to conquered Allison soul.
Allison is what a girl wants as a best friend. She is committed to you forever. Having feelings for Dean didn't change what she come to do. She would hurt someone she love to have her revenge. That conquered my heart the way she was so committed to her best friend.
This is the story of Dean and Allison. Both have had loss that has affected their belief that they deserve love. Both have wall up so high that no one can get across. However the immediate chemistry is chipping away at both.
Allison is on a quest for revenge and Dean is trying to control his anger issues. They both know they want each other but don't know if they can get past their own issues to be together.
There was good character chemistry between the two characters and it was easy to relate to them. There are a couple of pretty good twists.
There were some grammar errors, like most of the Willow books I have read. I do like her writing style, story choices, character buildup and would love to give five stars but just can with the editing issues. So four stars it is.
♡ Over all I really liked it a lot more then I thought I would. I actually thought Dean and Allison were really cute and the smut was really enjoyable, they have so much chemistry 💕

But the epilogue????
"'Do you think he would have ended up with her and not you?'
'I think none of it would have happened.' The words pour from me. 'I don't think any of that night would have happened.' The thought of that night being erased eases a pain inside of me, but then it comes back full force knowing that wish will never come true."
Did... did she just insinuate that her friend being raped was fate bc it brought her and Dean together?? Hopefully I'm miss interpreting that... bc wow. No girl, just, just no. (๑•́ -•̀)

"Once you’re shattered, you can be mended but the cracks are still there." ~ Allison
Usually when you start reading there are things that will make you have a love/hate relationship with the male lead character, but in this book my love/hate is with the female lead character Allison. She is very broken and with the love of Dean she is slowly being put together. This book is a very intense read that may hold triggers for some reader. If you dare to read Allison and Dean's story you will be put through the ringer and hopefully you will come out not as shattered as Dean and Allison.
Allie and Dean are both broken souls who just want to be loved. From the beginning, they are drawn to each other without ever really knowing why. Perhaps fate, kismet, soulmates, whatever you want to call it, but these two were meant to be. Their story isn't an easy one. My heart hurt for both of them, but they both deserved each other. Allie has been hurting for so long and she finally has someone she trusts and can tell her secrets to. Dean was amazing. He's been pushed away by so many people, but he holds strong and doesn't let Allie push him away. I loved him. He has such a good heart. There's so much turmoil and emotions in this book. I loved it.
It’s Our Secret was definitely an emotional read but I felt like so much of it just barely scratched the surface of how deep it could have been. I wish we had gotten a look at Allie’s motivations a bit earlier so we could sympathize with her more although I will say I did correctly guess where she was heading. I also feel like she didn’t really grow much throughout the book. Dean was alright but it was again a bit hard to get a read on him. There was some grammar and spelling issues and some of the parts of the story were a bit confusing but nothing too bad. Overall this book kept me interested until the ending.
This is Allison and Dean’s story. Both of them have such painful pasts and are struggling every day to cope. They just ‘fit’ perfectly together but Allison is basically on a self destruct mission to avenge her friend. I won’t say too much more about the plot as l don’t want to give anything away. Suffice to say this is a very powerful and emotional read with some dark themes and I absolutely loved it. I know this is an updated version of the book with a lot of new content, but it is the first time I have read it. I would definitely recommend this book as it is such a great read.
Dean and Allison. Both had their flaws and they paired together so well anyway. Dean saw something in Allison, and knew he would help fix her. Allison was looking for justice for her best friend. The small world they knew in school would tie all of that together to see if their secrets would unfold.
She asked for it..the strongest words in the book will be part of this secret. Will Dean be able to reach Allison. Will Allison ensure justice for her friend? She would stop at nothing. And she would risk anything. Dean saw all of that from the start. They came together anyway.
What a plot this book had, couldn't put the book down, it was just so good. It was only a little lie, she told the guy she was meeting, they got involved in a college. Allison meet Dean on a practice field walking to place from the college. They become friends and lovers. Allison was out to make a mission to get one of the players who raped her girlfriend and killed her best friend. Lots of lies and secret came out about her friends rape. A cover -up. Dean comes to here her to help her about her last and future. Enjoy
