Voice Out #1

Finding You

Rate this book
The past can't hold them back anymore...

Luke:

It's hard to trust anyone after the man you thought you loved leaves you half-dead and locked up in his room. It's been a year since that fateful day, but sometimes it feels like nothing has changed even though everything has.

I have a job now. I have friends. I have a life. Yet, somehow it all feels empty, like I'm just existing instead of actually living. I thought that was how the rest of my life would be too.

Until I met Scott.

Scott:

Losing someone you love is awful. But having that happen to you again and again? It breaks you. It makes it impossible for you to care about someone because the fear of losing them stops you. I'd know. I was that person.

I'd lost my mom, my dad and then my godfather. Every person I'd loved had been taken away from me. It made me wary of getting close to anyone and with good reason. I was okay with keeping my distance, with not caring about anyone.

Until I met Luke.

Lonely and wary Scott meets Luke, who is haunted by his past, in this sweet, hurt/comfort romance that is full of gentle hugs, sweet touches and love that goes beyond the physical.

Finding You is the first book in the Voice Out series. Though each book in the series is a standalone, do check out the series if you like found families, friends-to-lovers relationships and characters who adore their furry companions.

Trigger Warning: Mentions of past abuse and an incident of self-harm.

Wow, talk about sappy. I love a light, fluffy book, but this was overkill.

These guys had a crisis every other conversation, where Scott had to reassure Luke that he really loved him and wasn’t going to leave him.

I can do one scene like that just fine, but this was ridiculous.

Aaah, this was such a sweet, heartbreaking read and I absolutely loved it.

Luke and Scott were so good together, and I loved the way Scott supported Luke throughout the course of the book.

Oh, and Tressa the three-legged cat was a definite plus.

Luke's trauma and Scott's losses haunt them

Please read the trigger warnings and be advised that I felt that they didn't go far enough to warn people. What Luke went through was horrific and though it didn't happen on the page, there was more than enough detail described (dub-con, non-con, (essentially) gang-rape, mental cruelty, physical assault, imprisonment) to potentially trigger anyone, and enough to make me cry even though it was fictional.
I loved the characters of Scott and Luke but felt that with the severe abuse that Luke suffered at the hands of his ex and the subsequent PTSD that he was not addressing or getting help for, he was in no place to become involved with anyone, no matter how wonderful Scott was to him.
Scott lost three very important people at a young age and was afraid to love anyone because he too scared to lose them. He was a very lovely person who was drawn to Luke but instinctively knew that he was very fragile and treated him with kid gloves.
Their story did capture me but it dragged because Scott was always having to reassure Luke of his love and affection (understandably in the circumstances) and the story could have been a lot shorter if the same ground was not covered over and over again. Don't get me wrong, there were lots of lovely moments throughout but I got sick of reading the same sentences over and over again.
I am definitely hoping that Brady's story is different because I want to learn about him and his 'stalker'.

A gorgeous serotonin boost.

I've been wanting to read this book for over a year, so I'm delighted that this series is being made available again.

This is a lovely read, ideal for fans of the hurt/comfort trope, and those who enjoy lots of snuggles and sweetness. My main concern was that these boys would develop diabetes with all the sugar they consume!

There are lots of serious triggers that are touched on in this book: physical and mental abuse (including rape and imprisonment), anxiety, depression, insomnia and disturbed sleep, self harm, and suicidal ideation. However, these are not treated very heavily, and the book is positive in tone. That keeps in fairly light for low-angst readers, but may not be the book for those who like to explore these themes in more depth.

I enjoyed the pairing of Scott and Luke very much. I liked that Scott had his own demons, and I would have liked these to have been introduced earlier and explored more thoroughly. I am not a fan of having a broken one and a saviour, I prefer more balance, which we do start to see towards the end of the book.

I am really intrigued by the community that Mama D has created, and look forward to reading more in this series, especially Brady's book which is next.

*4.5* (Triggering warnings at the end)
This story is huge on the hurt/comfort trope as Luke becomes the new roommate of Scott but it is immediately apparent that the young man needs to be treated with care with the wariness in his eyes and anxiety clear in his body. Scott is the perfect balance for this with him being so nice, caring and just wanting friendship for them both as they are clearly both in need of someone in their lives.
Both men have had hardship in their lives up to when they meet. Scott experienced a lot of loss as a child and young man whilst Luke has been through something no one should ever be subjected to. The details are release slowly across the story as he comes to trust Scott and share more of himself and I heartily agree with Scott in that he's so brave in how he has continued to live, to fight and move on from that time in his life.
There is a real sweetness to their relationship. There are no pressures, no expectations but there is extra reassurances needed as Luke grows to listen to what he wants and what Scott can offer him. It is also hard for Scott at times, understanding what Luke has been through and learning his triggers and need for moments alone as well as accepting his own needs in regards to his history. It is an equally hard and easy read, but what the two men build and share together makes it all worthwhile and brings a smile to your face when they overcome anything and share in the joys of just being with each other.
**Trigger Warning - one scene includes memory of rape, one scene includes self harm, memories of being beaten, memories of thoughts of self harm**
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Weathering the Storm by author Stella Rainbow is the first book in the Voice Out Series. This story is told in dual POV which helped me a ton while reading this one. I have not read the previous version of this story. So, this was all brand new to me. I loved the connection in this story. The characters really come to life and make me want to cheer for them.

Scott, he is protective of the people he loves. He is great at reading people. He is kind as well. I loved that he is protective of Luke when he meets him. Like he knows something is going to be special about Luke.

Luke, he feels safe around Scott. He bakes, he is kindhearted, and he has a hard time trusting his own judgment after his ex. He is against dating ever again.

I think Luke really needs Scott and he really blossoms under Scott’s care and love. Luke is the Voice Out Junior editor. He is shy and quiet at heart.

Overall, this is a heavier read, but well worth it. I loved the characters and how the overall story develops. This is a great read, and I am glad I picked it up.

I loved this book! What a good feel I got when finished... two hurt souls come together. Luke just made me wanna hug him forever. His past shy of messing his future. Scott is there to confort him and love him unconditionally. There is a lot of angst and a bit of a twist but the slow burn between both characters pays at the end. I liked the secondary characters as they enrich the story. One of them gets to be in the next book lead... 😉

This book tackled a lot of really hard themes. It has mention of past extreme abuse, homophobic parents, and on page self harm. It was heartbreaking, but felt well done (keeping in mind that none of these things are particularly triggering for me). The romance was well done, extremely low heat, which made sense for both MCs, with an instant attraction that quickly turned into love. Unfortunately, the writing style didn’t one hundred percent work for me. It wasn’t bad writing, so I think you should check this one out if it seems like something you’d like; but for me the writing was a little too simplistic and made the book seem more YA, which wasn’t what I was looking for when tackling such tough topics.

Beautiful!

Scott was such a hurt individual, taking his life back after horrible trauma for several years. Scott was devastated by his family losses and held himself back from love. The fact that Scott is demisexual endeared this book to me right away. This story about how they grew separately and together to trust and love each other was so wonderful!! A must read 📖

DNF @ 4%.

10 pages in and you’re already working on the set up for the other books in the series? And doing the whole info dump? And introducing annoying side characters?

And this just stinks of insta- everything.

Weathering the Storm is an engaging slow burn, hurt/comfort novel with lovable characters plus chocolate chip cookies and a kitten for extra sweetness. It features Luke, a young man struggling after escaping horrendous abuse at the hands of someone he thought was a boyfriend. Now he’s scared of strangers and knows he’ll never be able to be in a relationship again. But he’s courageously committed to starting a new chapter of his life. The first step is finding a new place to live.

Scott had his own painful history, having tragically lost all his loved ones. He’s lonely and decides to rent out the guest room in his home, not for the money but for the companionship. None of the applicants fit the bill until Luke walks through his door for an interview. Luke is visibly uncomfortable, but Scott feels an immediate connection and his protective instincts kick in. He wants to pull Luke into a bear hug but he knows better. Luke is vulnerable and unsure when he views the room, but he thinks he’s comfortable with Scott. He has trouble trusting his own judgment, though, since it’s failed him in the past. His plan is to politely coexist, spending most of his time secluded in his room, but Scott won’t have that and gently works to pull Luke out of hiding. A beautiful part of the book is how they bond over books, reading aloud to each other.

This is a gentle love story. Luke’s journey from living a nightmare to living a dream is one I completely enjoyed witnessing. His history is atrocious and beyond heartbreaking, and like Scott, I wanted to wrap him up and keep him safe, too. He is a well-written, sympathetic character. Scott is characterized perfectly as a protector and caretaker. He’s ceaselessly patient, innately understanding of Luke’s needs, and he desires nothing more than to help him heal. He needs to tread carefully, though; he knows to interact gently, give Luke plenty of space, and respect his anxieties. Luke is convinced he can’t be fixed, can’t be loved, and can’t allow himself to fall for Scott because he fears being used and dumped. I love seeing Scott prove him wrong.

Scott isn’t the only one caring for Luke. There is an array of characters in his life that give him the unconditional love and support he needs and deserves.

This is such a sweet story that I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. And indeed it did, in spectacular fashion, upsetting the lovely status quo. However, the beautiful epilogue – six months or so down the road – wraps the story up nicely and had me completely forgetting the previous stressful conflict. This is the first book I’ve read by Stella Rainbow and I’m very glad I picked it up to review and recommend.

Scott is looking for a roommate not because he needs money, but because he's tired of feeling lonely. When he meets Luke, there's something about him that makes him want to protect him.

Luke is scared, slowly getting over a very abusive relationship, & finds it hard to trust anyone.

Slowly, they become friends, learning about each other's pasts, learning what makes the other one happy.

Considering the stress Luke feels with new situations, I would have thought that Scott would have engineered a meeting with Luke & his friends before Thanksgiving (thereby giving Luke an opportunity to get used to his friends over a quick coffee or something), so this part was a bit strange.

I’m also not sure it can be accurate that a DA convicted Scott’s ex to charges that didn’t keep him locked up for very long... Considering how Scott was finally discovered by the maid (& what she thought about him when she found him), as well as how badly he was scarred. This doesn’t ring true to me. I would have liked to know what happened after the incident at the apartment, too.

The way Luke feels about cutting is very clearly described (not sure I’ve read something so accurately described, actually). Quite emotional...

The chapter numbers begin at the title page, which means the chapter 1 is named as chapter 5, & so on until the end of the book. I was confused a bit after reading a few chapters, since the chapter number I was at didn’t correspond to the number of chapters I had read.

This story was quite original, very interesting to read.

I received an ARC from the author in return of an Honest Review.

Stella Rainbow's debut novel was a nice surprise. The author tackled two very important topics in the book.
One MC is demisexual, while the other suffered from a traumatic experience that has made him hate sexual intercourse.

What I loved most about this book, was that while the subject matter was VERY intense, there was always a sliver of hope going through the plot.

Luke was a prisoner for 3 years, and escaped the brutality and assault of his boyfriend coincidentally. A year later, he has friends and a job, but he still bears the scars of those years, both emotionally and physically. He self harms to cope and is painfully shy and distant.

In comes Scott, his knight in shining armor. Scott doesn't want to fall in love because everyone he loves leaves one way or another. So Scott never saw Luke coming.

The two men gradually progress from roommates to friends and finally boyfriends. This progress was well written and believable. I appreciated the fact that was no magic cure and no insta-love. That didn't really fit the characters and the author did a great job with that.

Their love story was an uphill battle, with both of them working hard, communicating well and using each other's strength to grow. They were a match made in heaven, with one being demi, and the other struggling with sex in general.

The three legged cat Tressa was the cutest side character too!

I would definitely read another book by this author.

OK, this was a bit of a weird book for me. There's so much going on in terms of baggage an emotional trauma that the main characters need to deal with - definitely pay attention to the trigger warnings - but the gravity that usually comes with the themes being dealt with is almost totally absent here. By that, I guess I mean that my preference when I'm reading about past abuse, bereavement or mental health issues, etc, I'm more engaged when there's a bit of angst. My read of Weathering The Storm, though, is that it's unbelievably sweet. In terms of the characters, I do really like Scott and Luke and I adore that their love languages are food and book-related. Luke's personal growth in particular is evident…he's definitely got more healing to do. However Scott is the perfect foil for him - once he acknowledges his own issues, he unlocks his inner caretaker…again, super sweet, just like the slow burn of their developing romance. Aside from one significant (fairly graphic) scene, even the plot elements that should set off an extreme emotional response from Scott or Luke are resolved quite quickly with lots of sweetness and understanding.

So, In Weathering The Storm it feels to me like the author has tried to produce the most emotionally charged story with the least amount of angst. I *think* it's worked as the plot is interesting and the characters likeable, so I'm sure it'll work brilliantly for other readers, but it left me feeling a little like something was missing. 2.75*

Scott and Luke were incredibly sweet together when Luke's walls dropped. With a difficult past that left scars both physical and mental it's no surprise that the relationship takes time to grow and I was glad the story focused on the growth rather than a cliche "sexual healing" scenario. Luke needed time to learn trust and comfort and to find the strength within himself to progress beyond his past horror.

What I enjoyed most was the sweetness and tenderness that took precedence over sexual interest. I'm all for a deliciously smutty story, but when dealing with trauma it's more important to heal the brain before jumping back into the sack, even if you never do make it there. Scott's sexuality was almost too perfect for Luke, but that's actually a sweet way to write in a simplified journey for both men. At the length of the story it was important not to overcomplicate things. Luke's trauma is plenty.

The confrontation at the end was a little overdramatized, but nothing unbearable or out of the realm of possibility. Overall this was a very good story that focused on healing, honesty, and how Scott and Luke forged a future together amidst trials. With a supporting cast that really lifted the story I'm definitely interested in coming back for more from the series.

Finding You, the first book in Stella Rainbow's Voice Out Series is a fabulous roommates romance.

Luke and Scott's first meeting sets off something. These are two men who struggle with friendships. Luke struggles to trust people, but he senses he can trust Scott from the get go. Meanwhile, Scott has always been alone and wants a friend.

This is a story with Harry Potter books, and a lot of sweet, calming moments. The beginning of their friendship is extremely sweet.

It's a story with ex abuse, trauma, and PTSD. Luke is a broken man. When the reader finally learns the depth of his pain, it is heart wrenching. It's definitely way more than I was expecting. His past also includes self harm which is written with care.

I love the smooth writing style. Written in alternating first person pov, the author brings the reader into the characters' feelings perfectly. Every thought, every look, is wonderfully brought to life. The author skims over a lot of the details, which is annoying at times, but works fine overall.

Finding You is an amazing debt book by Stella Rainbow. I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next.

Okay about this book:

I have read this book quite a while ago now and am only now writing the review. And I have my reasons for that. Something in this book really disturbed me, but first I will explain more about the book:

We have two characters: Scott and Luke. Scott has lost important people early in life. He has abandonment issues but is a really sweet person. Luke on the other hand went through hell. PLEASE BE AWARE OF TRIGGER WARNINGS. And they don't even cover it all. So if you have any triggers (except child loss) please skip this book. Luke moves in with Scott and Scott treats him with kid gloves. But the whole PTSD thing that Luke has is not addressed properly. He didn't get any help and that bothered me immensely. You can't just overcome something that Luke went through with reassurances.
And that killed the story for me. Unfortunately. I really liked the idea of the story and it could have been soo good. I really love a good "overcoming something bad" story, but this one was executed sloppily.
So from me, this story only gets 2 stars.

This debut title is a series starter with a HEA in an MM Contemporary Romance series. It can to be read as a standalone and the next title in the series has different main characters. Slow-burn. Friends-to-lovers. Told of 2 POV:s.

Trigger warnings: past severe abuse and rape, self-harm

This was a pretty good one for a debut book. The themes it handles are respectable for a debut author - and anyone. Points for that. A moving, suitably angsty story considering the themes but maybe a bit easy from the point of view how easily the mutual feelings were born perhaps - but still it was very slow-burn. It was very pleasant to read the main characters relationship progress despite what else the book contains. This isn't a book with lots of hot content but the opposite, which fits it very well, and despite those parts the relationship is very sweet and loving. As a whole it worked well.

A sweet series opener and promising debut!

This was a sweet story of hurt/comfort. All of the characters were well written and believable and the story flow was fantastic. I know some have commented on the simplistic nataure of the story as a bad thing. I disagree. Sometimes you're in the mood for a complicated story, and sometimes you just want a sweet simple love story. This definitely falls into the second category, but I don't see this as a bad thing, simply a matter of timing and or preference! Obviously, as a new author there were some editing issues, but those will disappear with time and experience and did not detract from the story in any way. As for me, I loved getting to know these two guys and their fabulous support network at Voice Out and look forward to the following books in this series! Well done!

Healing the scars of the past.

This book was an emotional roller coaster for me, but in a way that ended on the right note of love and comfort. It’s absolutely right that Luke and Scott’s relationship was slow burn with the emphasis on emotions than physical attraction. In different ways, they both needed time and space to trust each other and gain the courage to overcome their pasts. I felt so much for Luke and can only imagine (and cry a little) all he suffered through before finding his safe haven and working to piece himself back together. I liked the way that Scott’s demi/gray-sexuality was included without ever taking over focus. All in all, a poignant and extremely good book. Definitely pay attention to the trigger warnings though, because past recounting could reach someone in a very bad way.

Oh my goodness!! This was a truly touching, tragic story, Luke has suffered the most horrendous past that has truly broken him, he doesn’t believe he could ever trust or love again. But then there’s Scott, who has suffered too many loses of loved ones and feels totally alone, he is the best thing that could happen to Luke, he just needs patience and time. There are triggers here, rape, gang rape, spousal abuse, body mutilation, and downright torture, all is in the past and only spoken of but still hard to read. I absolutely loved this tender story, the patience and understanding Scott gives to Luke is amazing. Looks like this is the author first book, it’s a great one.

I really loved this story. It was close to my heart; being a survivor of abuse and knowing how hard it is to trust again. Luke is a young man looking for a place to rent. Scotts tired of being lonely so he rents a room out. Something about Luke makes Scott want to rent to him.
They start as roommates, progress to friends, and slowly progress to more.

The magic in the story is the absolute patience that Scott has for Luke. What Luke endured in his previous relationship was horrific and he is terrified to open up. Scott doesn't rush anything, he is happy for what they have. Its a really good story.

I absolutely loved this story when I first read it when it was originally published as a different title. I was thrilled when the author decided to freshen it up and republish it with a new name. Luke and Scott have a gorgeous tale to tell you and you have got to read it! Scott wants a roommate because he has a spare room in his apartment and room in his life for a friend. He has been a bit of a loner since losing all of those close to him with the exception of his best friend. When he meets Luke, he knows instantly that he needs this person to move in. Luke does not trust easily and has scars that run deep. Watching Scott work his way into Luke’s life is truly a beautiful story. Thanks to Scott’s goodness and kindness, Luke slowly relearns how to live and maybe even love again. Like I said before, this book is such a good read. It is not light because one MC has some serious mental trauma, but the relationship that builds as Luke heals is so worth a read. It just makes you feel good to read this. I can’t wait until the next book in the Voices Out series gets republished too!

Luke and Scott are both hurting when they meet. Luke has recently escaped from a horrifically abusive relationship and recovered just enough to feel he can leave the safety of the shelter where he's been. Scott has lost both his biological parents and his godfather who had raised him and become a virtual recluse. Scott realizes that he needs company and renting out his spare room might be a way of getting past his loss. Luke is the last applicant to interview for the room, but easily the best in Scott's eyes. The two bond over books reading to each other and finding strength to move beyond their friendship as well as the trauma of their pasts to find something special.

This is my first time reading S. Rainbow and I'm really glad I did!

Our MC's are both a bit (a lot) broken. It's in learning to love & care for one another that so much healing is able to occur. Their road is not all rainbows & glitter - there are plenty of bumps and storm with which to contend.

There are a few editing blips that pop up, but for the most part they didn't interfere with the story or my enjoyment.

This is a ROMANTIC romance, so don't go into it looking for much heat - 1🔥. There's plenty of lovely cuddling though!

This is my first book by Stella Rainbow, but it won't be the last. This story has a lot of heartbreaking moments for the two broken characters. I don't have many triggers, but please heed the trigger warning if you do. Finding You is the first of Rainbow's Vice Out series and I eagerly anticipate the next book. While this is definitely a hurt/comfort read with a huge dollop of angst, it is also a beautiful friends-to-lovers romance. If any of those things are things you enjoy, I highly recommend it.

This was an awesome story!! Scott is looking for a roommate. Realistically he is looking for company, he is lonely. Luke answers his ad. Luke has been hurt in the past and has a hard time trusting. He feels comfortable with Scott. His backstory was heartbreaking. I fell in love with Scott and Luke. I just wanted to hug Luke and never let him go. I loved this story; it was well written and had such a wonderful positive vibe. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I was gifted from the author. Beautiful support

Scott is looking to rent out his room he gets the unexpected when Luke ends up being his roommate.

The realtionship that builds between these two characters are beautiful to watch. Not only the realtionship but a genuine friendship is made from understanding, patient, love and support.

After years of abuse Luke is not easy to trust and Scott proves that he can be trusted even though he is dealing with his own issues. I love that the book and characters did not feel rushed.

Great book... definite must read

Sweet!

The romance between Scott and Luke is one of the sweetest I’ve ever read. Luke has endured untold levels of abuse from an ex yet Scott sees beyond Luke’s emotional and physical scars. Scott supports Luke with friendship, love, patience and understanding. They create their own family with rescued kitten Tressa and their friends. Love expressed here is healing to both men and absolutely sublime! I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series about Brady as well as additional titles by Stella Rainbow!
