Her old friend, Detective Crowley, has retired and the new detective doesn't care for Ettie nosing into his investigation. What Ettie finds surprises the Amish Community; to everyone's dismay secrets and crimes come to light. My mystery book reviews of Secrets Come Home follows.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT:
In Secrets Come Home, Samantha Price created an Amish mystery filled with secrets, lies, and crime. Secrets never stay hidden, and the lies needed to sustain the secrets have a way of coming undone; as Ettie stated: secrets come home.
"Oh! What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive"
The plot filled with twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat as Price took me on a journey of discovery, pain, murder, and grief. The twists and turns just kept coming in this book. I would think Ettie had found the murderer and Price would introduce another plot twist. Samantha Price brought the multi-plots threads together skillfully. As a result, creating an intriguing mystery.
With a cast of suspects and reasons to kill Horace, Price held the who, what, why, and when, close to her chest. As a result, Price crafted a tantalizing mystery. I found the pacing perfect and Price's prose descriptive. I love reading Amish stories as they give me insight into the Amish way of life. Also, I have found Amish stories are clean without swear words or sex. That said, Price faced head-on a part of life which affects a lot of teens. As well as, the consequences which result. In Secrets Come Home, I discovered Amish communities have crime the same as the rest of us. I also thought the Amish community in this book did not seem as strict as some Amish; this enabled me to better relate to the characters.
I loved Ettie's character. She's determined, compassionate, and smart, yet appears to be nothing but a toddling little old- lady. Her relationship with Detective Kelly is stained as he doesn't want Ettie interfering with his investigation. Although indubitably not a carbon copy of Detective Crowley, I felt as the storyline progressed he warmed to Ettie. Also, I hope Price plans to give Ada a book. Ada is Ettie's sidekick in Secrets Come Home and a likable character who desires happiness.
MY OPINION:
I found Secrets Come Home a terrific mystery filled with suspense, intrigue, and multi-plot lines which include twists and turns. Price's characters are believable and realistic with pacing which is smooth and steady. Samantha Price‘s writing flows well, and the premise is fresh and original. The storyline in Secrets Come Home focus’ on the murder mystery and the characters, instead of the religious aspects of the Amish religion. I did not find any editing errors in this book.
Secrets Come Home is clean, well-written, and well-developed. As a result, this book's suitable for anyone who likes a good mystery. I loved Secrets Come Home and would not hesitate to buy this book for myself or a friend.
SECRETS COME HOME RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4

I love an Amish mystery and this one was great. Ettie and Elsa-May are sisters in their early eighties and they live together. Ettie's close friend Agatha left her house to Ettie in her will. When Agatha goes to check it out some boards are rotting so she gets her nephew to fix them. He goes under the house to check for damage and finds the body of Agatha's boyfriend who has been missing for years. The police believe Agatha killed him and placed him under her house but Ettie doesn't think so and decides to investigate herself. Between all the secrets and surprises this book keeps you on your toes. Excellent mystery, great characters. Looking forward to the next one.
WOW.....uniquely original plot! Twisty-turny, kept me guessing. Loved the story. Well developed characters. Clean, but with no religious proselytizing was an added bonus. I will definitely be reading more from this author!
This book has more twist and turns than a country road in Kentucky. Lies are uncovered and more lies are told to try and explain why those were told. Ettie is awesome at figuring out who killed Horace. There are some surprises in who killed Horace and why. I recommend this book good clean mystery solving,
Ettie and Elsa-May are sisters in their early eighties and they live together. Ettie's close friend Agatha left her house to Ettie in her will. there seems to be something strange about the home. samantha Price piques your interest in this book, a new author to me and I will follow more of her mysteries
Bishop John informed Ettie Smith (80+, Amish) she needed to be at her deceased friends Agatha King (60, Amish) reading of the will. Mr. Andrews (60+, lawyer) informed Mrs. Ettie Smith & Ava Glick (eldest daughter) what they would receive from Agatha’s estate. Ettie took Elsa-May (80+, older sister, Amish) & Jeremiah (grandson, Amish) to look at the house/property she just inherited. Jeremiah came back inside after looking under the house.
There’s a man’s body under the house wrapped in plastic. The body was taken to the morgue to be examined. Detective Keith Kelly came to interview Ettie & Elsa-May. The corpse had been ID as Horace Hostetler (Amish). He had been hit in the back of his head. Horace had disappeared on his rumspringa. Ettie went to talk with Doris Hostetler (90+, mother) & Sadie Hostetler (60+, daughter/sister, spinster). The Bishop stood by Horace’s grave & gave his blessing. The 2 amateur sleuths: Ettie & Elsa-May were doing their own investigation on the murder. Jeremiah had found a small yellow envelope when he was replacing the floorboards. Joshua Yoder is now engaged to Peggy Schroder.
Could Horace have taken the diamonds?

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written Amish Cozy Mystery book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great Amish Cozy Mystery movie, or better yet a mini-TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars.

I read the first book in the Ettie Smith Amish Mystery series called Secrets Come Home by Samantha Price. This is a delightful cozy mystery about two octogenarian Amish sisters who live together named Ettie and Elsa-May who enjoy dabbling in crime solving. In this story Ettie’s friend Agatha dies and leaves her house to Ettie. A body is discovered beneath the floor boards and Ettie decides that she needs to prove her friend’s innocence when the police automatically assume Agatha is the guilty party. I encourage those who enjoy Amish cozy mysteries to read this lovely series.
Book 1. This is about Amish sisters Etti and Essa Mae in their 80"s. A good friend Agatha had died and in her will she left her house and some money to Ettie. Agatha tenant Ava got some money too. And Agatha wanted Ettie to let Ava stay a Tennant as long as she wants. When Ettie stayed in the house there were some floorboards messed up. So Jeremiah ( Essa Mae grandson ) came to fix it. When he went under the house he found a body wrapped up. None of them knew who it was. Etti sure did not think Agatha had anything to do with the body. The new detective Keith was on the case placing Detective Crowley that the older women always liked. The name of the man was Horace. Agatha fiancee. Well Ettie and Ava went to Horace family to find out if he had enemies. His mom and sister Sadie said no. But they told them about a building company Starling CO. He worked for. So Ettie and Ava went there. They asked the owner Bill about the man he said they they could look at paperwork at that time 1970"s. This book was alright but it was not a great story line to me
This was an Amish cozy mystery about a woman who inherits a house and then a body is discovered under the floorboards. The mystery is unraveled very slowly, but by the end everything is solved.
An easy simple not complicated read. Plot was interesting enough to keep you thinking but not overly complex. It was actually really helpful to have that sort of book available for a nice cozy read, you know? It was short but kept your attention. I think I’m gonna like these mysteries quite a bit. I already like Eddie. But I have a feeling that they’re going to be a lot more characters coming and going.
Secrets Come Home is a page turning mystery that really kept me guessing about who the killer really was. Just when I thought I had it figured out the author would provide another twist to the story! The ending really was great and something I didn't see coming. Fans of Amish fiction blended with a not so easy to solve murder mystery will enjoy this one. I loved the characters especially Ettie, although in the beginning I felt like I was missing something, and then realized she was in another series of books. The author did provide enough background information about her through that I was able to not only connect with her, I also felt like I learned a bit about her past. I do want to go back and read the other series that she was in because I enjoyed her character so much. Samantha Price has hit a home run with Secrets Come Home and she has gained a new fan here.
This book was so different than most Amish books. The murder mystery had so many twists and turns! Kept you guessing till the end!! I really liked it ! Enjoy!!
A great cozy, Amish mystery about two older sisters, Ettie and Elsa-May that are the Amish Community's know alls(gossipers). In this first book of many in this series, a friend of the sisters passes away & leaves her house with all contents, as well as $15,200 cash, and a young Amish girl, Ava, that rents the dawdi house, as part of the Will. When Ettie receives the keys to the house, which Agatha, her deceased friend left her, then that's when everything goes haywire from there. Poor Ettie ends up needing boards replaced and when her young family member, Jeremiah, comes over to take a look and has to crawl under the house. Well that is when everything turns for the worse for Ettie. Jeremiah tells Ettie there's a dead person under the house and they call the police. From here, Ettie puts on her detective hat and tries to solve the murder mystery of who the person is, who killed them, and why. The story is definitely an entertaining, interesting, clean ,cozy mystery that you will love to read. You will be hooked after the first chapter. A great book with a great mystery adventure. Loved this book!!
A man is missing and his body turns up, wrapped in plastic! Who is responsible for his death?
A young Amish man and a young woman who had lived with his family for years had become close and produced a bloppi. This would usually be celebrated, but because of the lack of a marriage ceremony for the young couple, there was no celebration--in fact the family wanted to hide the fact that this had occurred. Should they raise the baby themselves and be shunned or find a couple to raise the baby. The young man decided to place his son with the highest bidder.
The baby was raised in a home with all the advantages but his parents lived with fear that the birth parents would come back and demand to have their baby back. Then love of money raised its ugly head and the birthfather demanded a large price for the child. He was given a velvet bag containing diamonds and other jewels. To safeguard this windfall he had the baby's mother put the jewels in a safe deposit box at the local bank.
You might think this is the end of the story. But no, there is a murder. And we must read the book to learn "Who dunnit?" Read this book to find out.
In a Amish community lived two older woman , sisters who lived together. Ellies friend had recently passed away and she had left her home to Ellie in her will. When she went to go into the home to check it out it seemed to need alot of repairs. Agatha always sat her rocking chair in the center of the room. Odd , yes . Well the floor board under it looked like it had some sort of wood eating worms. So she had Jeremiah fix them and while he was doing this he found a big surprise. Ellie kept trying to find out the truth but the local police station told her to mind her own business . But she didnt. If you know anything about the Amish people you will understand the book more . What a mess i would say.
This book by Samantha Price is one of the first Amish cozy mysteries I have read, and I am happy to say, it was much better than I expected, and it did NOT involve a lot of Amish lifestyle and religious aspects, as I originally feared. Instead it was another good cozy with the amateurs once again pitching in to clear a friend's name and ultimately help the police solve the crimes and catch the real culprits. It will definitely not be my last Price cozy mystery I read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was cute and a light read that I'm glad I found, but it wasn't my favorite Amish book. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, so I won't be reading the next book.
Therein lies the possibility I won't be able to stop thinking about Ettie, her sister, Jeremiah, and Ava and I'll return to this series later, but for now...
I think I'll read "The Inmate" by Freida McFadden next because I'm ready for a serious mystery thriller and McFadden delivers.
Nicely done! Pleasant, cozy Amish mystery in the mold of Miss Marple. Enjoyed the main character, Ettie, an 80 something Amish widow living with her sister Elsie-May, also a widow. Inheriting a house from a deceased friend, Ettie finds a dead body under the floor. Now she has a 40 year old murder to solve that involves her closely knit Amish community. Great read.
Loved this story, it has all the mystery, betrayal and love that makes it a truly good book. Really enjoyed Ettie and Elsa-May battering back and forth and finishing each other’s sentences. A lot of humor and clues keep you reading to see what will happen next. A very enjoyable reading experience you will be glad you tried it.
I love a good mystery and this one kept me flipping the pages. Ettie sure has her hands full. First her friend dies and is left her house. Well that's all great till a body is found under the floor board. A friend who disappeared fort years ago. Who and why would someone killed him? And what does this key found belong too? Like I said wonderful mystery well written by Samantha Price.
There was very little Amish about it. It was really secular, and so much time spent outside the community. I didn't like the characters or the murder. There was very little sleuthing, just a series of confessions. They used computers and took taxis. If I wanted a generic mystery, I wouldn't have chosen one with "Amish" in the series name. I'm terribly disappointed.
Simple story but very interesting. The last book of the book 2 series left me thinking Detective Crowley would end up with one of the Amish women. This book took many directions which caused the mystery to be more difficult to unfold with the guilty person. Enjoyed this book
I really enjoyed, Secrets Come Home. Ettie Smith an Amish sleuth who is determined to solve the case of a Amish man found below the floor boards of a house she inherited from a close friend, Agatha. So many secrets...... So many surprises. I recommend this book! Great read! On to book two.....Amish Murder.
The author has given her readers a very interesting story that keeps moving and causing us to wonder. I love the fact that there is no foul language used. While all the characters were interesting, each one for different reasons, my favourite character was the son. This is a story that I can gladly recommend, especially to anyone who enjoys a mystery.
