Dense, crisp, often funny and sometimes bizarre, this first collection of poems from blogger Hayley G. Hoover invites us to open ourselves up to love, heartbreak, and curiosity.
I’d read anything Hayley writes, so I may be a bit biased when I say I loved this book. Hypotheticals made me cry ugly tears. I started reading Thoughts From My Notes App aloud to my partner and I didn’t stop until the end of the book. Thank God Jess Andra forced Hayley to finally publish some of her work, I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Really excellent, especially considering this is her first book of poetry. Admittedly, I'm one of those fans who remembers "The Lonely Goatherd" days and was an active singer in the Hayleylujah Chorus, so I'm a little biased, but I quite enjoyed it.
There was poignant insight ("Actually," "Bitch," "Halves"), dry humor ("Nothing Can Last with a Man Who's a Fish," "A Day at a Celebrity's House"), sharp commentary ("Big Strong Man," "Knifies Anonymous"), fierce love ("Past Lives," "Thanks, Mom"), heartbreak ("Strikingly Altered," "Residue"), and more. The only gripes I had were that the rhyming schemes were sometimes uneven ("Mr. Darcy's Second Try") and that some of the timely references were a little distracting ("The Story," which has a reference to Vine that I thought would make the otherwise beautiful love poem dated rather quickly). Otherwise, really enjoyed, and I loved seeing how you turned the bullshit into good shit for poems.
Also, for the record, you were always funny. Still are. So happy for you to have published something, especially something so great!
I've been following Hayley G. Hoover for so long now, and I was so happy to see she'd come out with a book! These poems are amazing and creative, and evoke such a variety of emotions and thoughts!
Hayley G Hoover is witty, and brings you back to your own feelings of heartbreak, empathy, and pure loathing. Her poetry is funny and moving. You'll find yourself connecting with her in moments that are so undeniably relatable. A great quarentine read!
One-time teen YouTube star Hayley G. Hoover is the younger sister of one of my childhood best friends, & I've loved following her writing throughout the years. Her first book, assembled & released during quarantine, shares poems from the weird to the wonderful, the everyday to the deep. Some resonated with me more than others, but such is poetry, right? And the ones that did resonate hit me hard. This is some seriously brilliant writing.
