Rate this book
The cover-up that could bring down the Federation.

On the fringes of human space, a murder will light a fuse and send two different people colliding together.

He’s a thirty-year veteran of military operations, she’s the youngest daughter of a wealthy business family.

Both used roundabout means to become detectives. She’s smart, he’s tactical. Now they need to learn from each other.

Mix in a very early high budget R&D AI created by the Military and we might have a problem.

For those trying to hide from justice.

---

Two years ago, a small moon in a far off system was set to be the location of the first intergalactic war between humans and an alien race.

It never happened. However, something was found many are willing to kill to keep a secret.

Now, they have killed the wrong people.

How many will need to die to keep the truth hidden?

As many as is needed.

He will have vengeance no matter the cost.  She will dig for the truth. No matter how risky the truth is to reveal.

Slow move into series

I am enjoying the conspiracy aspects of this book. Anderle is good with action, snarky AI characters and story arc. What bothered me in this book were his conversational scenes to move the plot along.

At the beginning when Jai and her sister discussed being an officer and dating it definitely was stilted and lacking a female voice. Also the long conversations between Jai and Erik to bond their partnership and move each of their personal growth was sluggish. I still want to continue with this series because I know ultimately the author will deliver on a great story arc I would just like to see smother character arc scenes.

I enjoyed the majority of this book, but I often find with this author that a new series starts well, but it is just a matter of time before it starts to fall apart. I hope that isn’t the case with this one, but I had some concerns with this book.
There is the ridiculous ‘dating’ that appears to be just a page filler. Also typical of many 'Anderle' books, when one of the main characters recognizes a serious threat instead of dealing with it they go into ‘banter mode’ and have a ludicrous conversation with the villain.
On top of this the book would benefit from at least a hundred ‘filler’ pages edited out, especially as some of the discussions were repetitive and quite mindless and I could probably do without the beignets.

This is the second book in the Opus X series and it is a decent continuation from the first one although I felt that I did indeed like the first one a bit more. Maybe because the novelty factor of the story and the characters had worn off a bit.

Our two main protagonists continue their quest to catch criminals and, at the same time, dig deeper into the conspiracy that got the marine Major’s soldiers killed.

The books is pretty much more of the same with respect to the first book. Eric and Lia are kicking ass and one actual improvement over the previous book is that this lazy dumbass police Captain from that book has been replaced by a much more competent one that is not only on their side but also do not shy away from cutting trough the political and administrative bullshit. At least for now.

One thing that annoyed me with the book is that there is a lot of bla bla dialogue between Eric and Lia, sometimes somewhat philosophical in nature. In small doses this is not a problem but in this book there’s quite a lot. Too much for me really.

Still, there is plenty of action as well as more interesting dialogue, character advancement (at least for Lia) as well as advancement of the overall story arc.

The book blurb is a typical Anderle blurb. Very dramatical but it doesn’t really say much about the story in the actual book. The blurb could fit just as well on the first book and probably on the next one as well. It is just a generic description of the series intended to sound cool and make you buy the book which is a bit annoying actually.

Anyway, the book was a decent read and I think I will continue the series… for now.

Opus X Two: Shattered Truth - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Michael Anderle never fails to satisfy, as is proved yet again in Shattered Truth, #2, in his riveting Opus X series, set in the not too far-off future in Neo SoCal.

Erik, aka the veteran/Obsidian Detective, has a snarky AI called Emma and he and Jia Lin, (another NSCPD officer) are chasing a murder suspect in a getaway flit car, as the novel opens.
Later Jia's wealthy business-owner mother contacts her, saying Jia should consider resigning from the force and making an advantageous arranged marriage, which Jia refuses, as she loves her job.
These two MCs keep the action and dialogue flowing as fast as Michael Anderle can write new adventures for them.
Why not join in that adventure today and get Book 1 (Obsidian Detective) as well as Shattered Truth, Book 2, to get more of Erik and Jia's back/present stories? You're guaranteed to love both books!

This second book in the Opus X series did not rise to the level of suspense, action and character development as did the first book. The focus on solving the mystery of the massacre on Mu Arae was sort of side-lined, only returning as a focal point in the last quarter of the book. Instead of some good, old-fashioned conspiracy plot, an annoying turn to possible romance between Erik and Jia took the fore-front of the story. The story would be better if they were unlikely friends, holding very different backgrounds, experience and philosophies. Instead we got Jia's middle-school crushing on Erik and it felt out of place. The battle or action scenes were well-written and crisp, but the book had a very uneven pace that was distracting and hard to keep the story in sight. Hope the third book is more like the first.

Second read was better than the first

It seems that any book that Michael touches gets better the second or more times around - this book/series is no exception. Everytime a new episode releases I have little to no hesitation to go back to book 1 to get everything fresh for the next one. Of course that means lots of binge reading but travelling to different space/times makes it easier to cope with the current times IMO.

Wow

Well written and thought out! You get to delve into the characters personality better. War is hell and in the trenches is where it is fought! My father in law dropped out of the naval academy and joined the army during WW2 he fought the Japanese from island to Island. He has a scar on his arm that goes from his wrist to his shoulder. He respects the Japanese. He was in Japan for the surrender.

The suspense is snowballing

Normally I don't read books with this much violence. I usually put them down if they do. But this series has so much mystery and suspense, plus three dynamic personalities that I just can't put it down. I read the first book in a day. Now I read this this second book in a day. Looking forward to the third.

I guess I expected too much. Love the narrator for the audio version and the parts that were the police cases but there was just too much philosophy, relationship (or lack thereof), and alien commentary. The aliens are just names. Nothing else.

The book itself is enjoyable. I'm really hoping they don't go for the standard bs of the 2 main characters hooking up, but in this book it's starting to hint more and more that they're going that way. I really hope they end it in the next book.

Plenty of action and character development. Battle scenes are well written. The narrator did a good job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene

This reads exactly like an 80's action sequel to a buddy cop movie. 1st they uncovered corruption all the way to the top NOW they battle... terrorists. Explosions aplenty in a fun read.

Conspiracies

Erik continues on his quest for the truth with help from Jia. Jia is learning from Erik and getting to be more like him, much to his amusement. But she still loves her stun gun. The story is getting darker as they get further down the rabbit hole. Can't wait for the next book.

Fun times

I rather enjoy the way Jia and Eric get along. I do find myself rolling my eyes at some of the silly ideologies Jia has. She is coming along rather nicely and soon may be capable of keeping up with Eric.

Partners In Crime Prevention

Erik and Jia are at it again. Intrigue, corruption, and terrorist ideology abound as the detective partners are called to Florida and run into it at home. I like the action, humor, and the "is there time for this" romance. Both partners learn from each other, bond with each other, and become more effective for it. Who really wants to kill Erik and why? I look forward to the next book.

Another reason to read Michael Anderle

So many questions, so few answers. Why do the terrorists want Erik dead? What was so important in that cave and why did they move it? And, will the answer be my next year's Christmas present?
This is a great series and a must read for all detective and SiFi fans.

Someone is out for their blood, and not caring how much people die to cover up his trail, the small pieces of evidence pointing to earth are starting to be a piece of a puzzle, but what is it showing, where is all of this pointing?
Digging out corruption, and blatend Greed feeding that is just the start, the more you dig the more dirt turns up, and remember the old adage: once is chance, twice is coincidence, third time is Enemy Action.

Highly Recommended :D

More chaos with Eric and jia. This series has promise especially as this book, whilst having enough of a connection to the major Arc started in the previous book, is solid enough to stand on its on. Fun and plenty of action with a good narrator
