This was a mixed bag in terms of enjoyment. The writing style was decent and there were just a few editing errors. My issue is with the characters, the plot and with quite a few implausibilities. For doctors, the two main characters were somewhat inept. Not only did they make some questionable choices over and over, but were the most unlucky of travelers. Literally everything that could go wrong did go wrong including getting hit by a falling satellite (I did mention implausibility). Riley has to be one of the worst people to be stuck with in an apocalypse. She had terrible instincts and she completely freezes up for long periods of time instead of trying to keep her daughter and group safe. One poor character was sacrificed to trigger her inability to cope. She and Coop should also know that recovery from broken ribs and a tension pneumothorax does not happen as fast as it did in this book. Go back and rest, Coop. What are the chances Riley might run into a man that was one of her husband's best friends? Yeah, I thought so too. I was very put off by how Coop and Riley made their exit in the end. Her family and daughter deserved so much better. I doubt I will continue since I have found that yelling at characters in a book doesn't seem to change anything.

Riley was a terrible character, I was actively rooting for her to die. She was stupid, selfish, an incompetent mother and just plain annoying. Why on earth Coop wanted to help her and not run away screaming was a mystery. She made nothing but terrible decisions throughout the book. It didn't help that every nearly implausible thing that could happen, did.

The ending was more terrible decision making, but I'm not following Riley through any more books to see how it turns out.

R U Kidding?

Let's see. A CME strikes and hotel employees are stealing and attempting murder less than 24 hours after the CME. The only car in the hotel garage that works is the rental car of one of the protagonists. So they leave Washington, DC.

On the way to a family farm in Virginia, they go by a burned out outdoor ,living store, BUT, there is another in an adjacent mall awaiting its grand opening. Among other things, the take A single handgun and a composting toilet. In the parking lot they find a pre 1975 truck and camper in which to load their stash.

Moving down the road, they are stopped at a blockade by three stooges, one evidently huge (6'5", 300 pounds?). The female protagonist uses her here-to-for unknown kickboxing skills to take him out. While she chases after her daughter and a recently acquired orphan, the male protagonist is overcome by the second bad guy. While the giant guy is down, our erstwhile guy shoots him up with a valium injection he happens to find in the truck.

I quit reading here.

Don't recommend.

Ms. Chance needed better Beta readers for this book.

I love post apocalyptic books, but this one got on my nerves. I can't stand Riley and Julia. They made the most idiotic decisions during the whole book. And Cooper, sweet Cooper who endured everything Riley put him through.
All that could go wrong went wrong and by design at the end they get the best luck ever.
I'm done with the book, can't stand the characters even when the premise was great. It was almost a DNF book for me.

More than a few editing errors need correction. The "heroine," Riley, is possibly the most unlikable heroine I've ever read. Selfish, immature, indecisive, most likely to win the worst parent award as well.

Both H/h are doctors and possibly the most incompetent individuals ever born. How they'd have actually graduated from medical school is a mystery to me.

I gave up at Chapter 13, approximately 60% of the way through the book. Thankfully, I got these through KU. I downloaded all 3 in this series at once and will be returning them because I can't bring myself to care what happens to any of the characters.

I came across this book recently and saw it was available via Audible Plus with a trusted narrator so I decided to give it a try. The premise was really fascinating; a solar flare causes society to falter and suddenly nothing works anymore. No satellites, no GPS, no phones, no internet. The lead character is Dr. Riley Poole. She’s an orthopaedic surgeon who’s at a conference in Washington DC with her young teenage daughter, Julia, when the solar flare occurs. Riley is a widow with 3 children – that’s right -3. The other two were left at home in Colorado with her parents. The other two children don’t feature strongly in the book, apart from being the motivation for Riley to get home to them. It was also unclear exactly why Riley took Julia with her given that poor Julia had to spend her days in the hotel room while Riley was the conference. They did eat meals together and did some sightseeing after hours but as holidays for a teenager go, it wasn’t ideal. At the conference. Riley meets Dr. Neil Cooper (“Coop”), a respected heart surgeon and they strike up a flirtation. After the solar flare, Riley, Julia and Coop, together with a young girl whose parents are missing, go on the road trying to make it to Riley’s family in Colorado. Over the course of the book, Coop and Riley become closer and there is a romantic HEA for them by the end. (That’s not really a spoiler – there are 2 other books in the series and the blurb for book 2 makes it obvious.)

I’m not an expert on solar flares but the setup seemed authentic to me and made for an interesting post-apocalyptic premise. But from there, things fell down a bit.

Wow what an amazing start to a new series by E A Chance.

Starts with Riley an orthopedic surgeon visiting Washington DC with her 13 year old daughter Julia. Leaving her two younger children at home on the Ranch with her parents back in Colorado. The plan is for mum to attend a medical conference, and Julia to do her homework and go sightseeing with her mum when she is free.

Riley meets the harebrained Cardiologist Coop and the can feel the romance starting. Before it can go or even really start the government warns people that a CME is 16 hours away and that the usa may lose power for a few days. Unknown to the public they have missed the first CME which has the worse case scenario!

Riley, Julia, Coop and an orphan they have found Hannah decide to travel to Rileys uncle in Virginia The story unfolds what should have been a days journey in months! Not saying anymore but its a I cant put down read!

The worse thing is have to wait till autumn for second part of this Trilogy!

Not for me

I didn’t get that far into the book as I just couldn’t relate to the characters. When she let her daughter dictate what to do in the emergency then instead of acting like a sensible adult and following her gut which said to leave the city she decided to take a tablet and chill.

Solid writing, very sad at times. Strong, sometimes too strong of a bunch of characters here. I will continue with the story when it will become available in the audio-format as it did develop quite well in Book 1, I am interested in what will happen next!

GREAT interpersonal character building, some of the timeliness of events was off as example a week occurred but starvation to that amount of weight loss would take longer...

Wow! I loved this book. It is a wonderful start to a new series that I want to read more of.
I read a lot of Dystopian books, but this one grabbed me in a way that most don’t, possibly because it seems so current and plausible.
I love the main characters, Riley, Julia and Coop and if I am ever stranded in an apocalypse, I’d want to be stranded with them.
This book is exciting, suspenseful, romantic and just plain addictive.
I can’t wait for the next book.

Started off good. Then a lot of problems with the details. Forty miles outside of Washington D.C and they don't see any other people? Less than a week after the event and they assume everyone is dying of thirst and starvation- even though it just snowed? World is ending and they raid a camping store- and leave behind extra guns but waste space on a portable toilet! Please! Broken rib but can walk carrying a pack and no one notices. Let 2 tweens go get water alone while adults make out...during the apocalyse. The female character is so dumb. Then it is just one thing after another. Don't want to waste any more time on it.

Fairly typical Post Apocalyptic yarn

This genre always starts with family members separated from each other after a world changing event this time a CMP. You always have bad guys taking advantage of survivors and the struggles to wade through the aftermath. A doctor who was supposedly a pepper who falls apart at everything the tragedy throws at her. Not believable Toss in a little romance, murder and mayhem and this what you get

Once upon a time, I loved apocalyptic/survival fiction ... now? Not so much. I didn't hate this, but I also won't continue on with the series. I don't know if it's too much implausibility, the major suspension of disbelief required ... the number of bad things that happen, and the complete strokes of luck.

I think part of it though is just my own mentality ... at first, many think this perhaps is only affecting their small area. If they can get out, or wait it out, then life can go back to normal. Maybe I'd make it in such a setting? But when it's an "end of the world" thing, honestly, is it really so wrong to just give up and take an easy out (especially when I'm older, kids grown and on their own). Sometimes this "will to survive" just seems to foreign to me.

It was a bit exhausting here ... the constant trials. I enjoyed The Walking Dead (which does get a shout out in this book) for a while, even with my feelings, but I had to step away after a while, it was just too much. Gave up on GOT after the "Red Wedding" too. IRL, life is hard even when technically it's easy ... I just don't think I have what it takes to fight and try to keep going when the going gets tough. Honestly

This was another one of those books that, while I was IN it, it was fine (some head shaking, some despair over how inhuman humans can become so quickly) but after finishing the book and thinking back on it, I get more critical, judgmental about things, reducing the "enjoyment" upon reflection.

3rd person (past tense) ... almost all centered on Riley's POV, although we get a few small sections from the daughter/Julia.

No proFanity? I guess that's good (for many) but ... it does seem a tad unrealistic ;) There was some sex, but nothing at all explicit. Death and unhumanity ...

KindleUnlimited/Read&Listen ... I went primarily with the audio. The narration was good.

This book should've been called Murphy's Law. Everything that could go wrong did, at least once.

Many times over, the bad luck these characters experienced bordered on unbelievable, and yet was somehow predictable at the same time.

But the book was still fairly entertaining.

I'm not sure I'll continue the series because really, of all the bad things I can think of that could go wrong in the apocalypse, only one of them didn't happen in this book. So what else could possibly go wrong in the next two?

The main thing that has me curious about the next book is the vague hints at the love interest's past, even if his statements about it were... cheesy. I don't know anyone who would say they "have experience with trauma." (Actual quote from the book.) I myself have dealt with a lot of trauma, but that phrasing just bothers me. It seems... off.

But that could be said about a lot of the dialogue.

And all the characters were far too quick to say exactly what they meant any time they were apologizing for the million dumb things they did. Some people are that straightforward, sure, but not everyone.

And most people don't make as many stupid decisions as these characters.

But it was entertaining enough that I finished the audiobook.

And the narration was decent.

The premise was good, but the execution was lackluster.

The “love story” between Coop and Riley is not believable in the slightest. I was honestly waiting for Coop to die and the real love interest to be introduced the entire book.

Every single character is pretty unlikeable and the banter between them seemed so forced. I felt like I was reading a made for tv movie with terrible actors. Riley is so whiny and annoying, and her personality was inconsistent throughout the story. One minute she’s determined to do anything to move on and the next she’s lying in her sleeping bag completely given up.

Everything that happens to them seems very implausible. The characters also make the worst decisions they can at every turn, and cannot seem to understand they cannot trust others. It made me want to scream 😅 One minor detail that I couldn’t let go was their obsession with the latrine and/or bucket. It’s the apocalypse, JUST GO OUTSIDE. Especially when they were all sharing them same bucket as a toilet and then dumping it outside, that’s 100X worse than just going behind a tree in the first place.

There are also a handful of spelling and grammatical errors that should have been caught in editing.

Safe to say I do not plan on reading the second or third books in this series.

This book was infuriatingly bad.

The heroine immediately entrusts a complete stranger with her life and her daughters’ lives during a global disaster. No background, no logic, no survival instincts, just blind trust because the plot needs it. Then we’re expected to believe she’s falling in love with him while she has no idea whether her other two children are even alive. As a parent, that alone is beyond unbelievable, it’s offensive.

The male lead “almost dies” not once but twice, which effectively kills any remaining tension. By the second miraculous survival, all stakes are gone and the story turns into pure eye-roll territory. And the grand finale? He shows up with a 2-carat diamond, as if expensive jewelry magically fixes trauma, grief, and catastrophic world-ending events.

The romance is forced, the character decisions are nonsensical, and the emotional beats feel rushed and hollow. What could have been a gritty survival story instead becomes a ridiculous fantasy where common sense, maternal instinct, and realism are completely absent.

I wasn’t moved. I wasn’t entertained. I was so annoyed that I barely finished the book.

Reading status: I'm almost halfway through the book and in two days they've lost their supplies three times. Too trusting, not careful enough, baddies. This is not looking good.

Reading status: I'm at 58% and they've lost their most recently acquired supplies. I'm starting to believe these guys are idiots. They sat around for at least 4 days because someone was depressed instead of going to family. And then were taken by surprise by the baddies. Didn't they have a watch set up like they mentioned?

Final thoughts: I'm surprised nearly everyone was still alive by the end of the book. They kept having one tragedy after another happen. And then the ending, it was like they were running headlong into traffic. I know you have family you want to see but they are 1000s of miles away. I bet she makes her return trip in October just so she can almost freeze to death again. Okay book, I'm not sure I'll read the rest of the series.

Good solid story

Book 1 in a series about a Coronal Mass Event causing havoc, with the target zone predicted to be North America.

Riley is an orthopaedic surgeon attending a conference in Washington D.C., travelling with her is her eldest daughter Julia. Her two younger children staying with Riley’s retired parents.

A couple of days into the conference an emergency broadcast from the White House advises that a CME will affect North America. It’s expected to be a minor event disrupting power for a few days afterwards. An orderly shut down and restoration of electricity, travel is outlined.

Unsurprisingly, things do not go according to plan. Teaming up with the charismatic Dr Neal “Coop” Cooper, Riley and Julia are forced to leave DC to travel home via her uncle’s farm in Virginia. Again we see that the biggest threats out in the wider world are not from limited resources or wild animals but instead come from other people.

I am genuinely unable to completely express my dislike for this book. I have been exploring post-apocalyptic literature featuring female protagonists. I appreciate characters who are not flawless, but rather imperfect and flawed. I particularly enjoy those who face challenges and grow stronger as a result. However, Riley Poole does not fit this description. Despite being incredibly flawed.

I have chosen not to provide a detailed review for this book due to the myriad of issues present in the storyline and characters. The plot of the story shows promise, but the frequent interruptions to note flaws detracted from my overall enjoyment of the story. If you are seeking an apocalyptic book series featuring a female protagonist, a well-developed supporting cast, and a cohesive plot and story progression, this book may not meet your expectations.

I enjoyed the story for the most part. I think the 'end of the world' part came a bit fast for me. It had only been a few days and they were having a hard time finding food etc. Other than a few things like that, I enjoyed the story and the characters.

Incredible and Intense

Widow and mother, Riley, with her 13 year old daughter Julia, embark on a journey to a medical conference where they both meet a gentleman named Coop. Life would not be the same as they all know it for long! Their world suddenly shifts when a solar flare causes an apocalyptic situation and survival becomes #1.

This is a fast paced and heart wrenching novel that steals your attention from the moment you pick it up. I highly recommend this book and will definitely be reading the others in this trilogy!

In some ways, this was a good read

They premise of the tale was great and other than a few of the problems (listed below) I enjoyed it. I couldn't emphasize with it though. There seemed to be glitches in the writing. I just wanted to smack the doctors way more than once.
For being doctors, they both seemed very childish and immature. Some of the scenes were so unlikely that my mind boggled. If not for those few things I would have marked this a great read. It is still enjoyable

4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a good story, but I could not warm to the heroine Riley. She suffers from PTSD, lost her husband 3 years earlier, and still suffers from anxiety attacks, even though she is an orthopaedic surgeon. I just found her decision making bizarre, and she came across as whiny and weak. I just feel the author held her back too much. I am undecided whether to continue with book 2, as the author packed in so much adventure and death into this book that at times it felt like too much.

Scap goat

To be fair, I didn't finish. However, by 67% and the majority of bad things happen because of a young teenager... just frustrating. After each incident, ohh no it's not your fault because...fill in the blank. At some point even a parent would start to question just how stupid is this child? It's not believable. I really wish the author could have woven in the "mayhem" of end of times in a creative way. But they didn't. I probably won't read anything else from this author.
