I was fortunate enough to see some of the early drafts of this book. I won’t go into my rant of why and how I got sick of High Fantasy again, but I am not really sure The Eighth Warden (The Eighth Warden #1) falls into the High Fantasy genre completely. Perhaps Slightly-stoned Fantasy with a strong harem element?

The Eighth Warden follows the patriarchal archetype, as the MC is male. However, I like how the hero sorta falls into the quest. No ginormous, bearded walking mountain tells him “you’re a wizard.” The MC just happens to start this quest without realizing that is what he is doing.

There are strong harem elements to the story, but I wouldn’t classify The Eighth Warden as the usual or typical harem type story, which I liked. By the end of The Eighth Warden the MC is only sleeping with one of the women. If you are seeking an MC based upon other harem stories or based upon the Captain Kirk model, you will need to look elsewhere. There are some hints that the MC might start sleeping with at least one of the other women in the harem; perhaps in the next book.

This is a little sex within The Eighth Warden, but it is all FTB. If you seek stroke material, you will need to look elsewhere for that as well.

The Eighth Warden has little profanity which surprised me as I expected much more cursing from the military based characters.

I really enjoyed The Eighth Warden; it has improved in leaps and bounds over what it was. I hope that the author writes another book in this series.

This book is quite different from other fantasy in that it focuses the interaction between characters and their objectives rather than relying the thrust of the story by action.

The two main characters, Corec and Katrin, along with the supporting characters find themselves magically bounded by Corec’s uncontrolled magic. It is in this quest for Corec and co. to undo the binding. And along this journey, the characters and their relationships develop but more importantly the readers are exposed to the various forces that governs Corec’s uncontrolled magic and fate.

All the characters have their own voices and objectives, which gives much depth and intrigue.

This book is not about a quest to save the world, which is quite overdone in other books, but rather a quest to build friendships in their unlikely situation.

If you’re looking for a read that’s heavily dominated by action, then you might find yourself looking elsewhere. However, if you’re in the mood to consume character interactions and their developments, it is quite the enjoyable read.

Considering that I found this at base desire type website, I am surprisingly impressed. The character development and scenery is at least on par with many fantasy stories, if not above.

I found myself heavily invested in these characters very quickly. The scenes that they were introduced was amazingly believable. Truly a hidden gem.

Buku pertama siri webnovel The Eighth Warden, bergenre high fantasy (sword and sorcery). Recommended untuk peminat siri novel pengembaraan fantasi. World building dan character building-nya mantap. Elemen2 aksi, pengembaraan, politik, romance pun cukup.
