Wicked Witches of the Midwest #5

Something to Witch About

Rate this book
Life's a witch ... and then you die.
It's the dying part vexing Bay Winchester these days.
She may be a long-suffering daughter, thankless newspaper editor, and keyed-up girlfriend, but she's barely holding off a royal freakout
Landon's family is visiting the inn -- and they're not exactly open minded. Bay is on a mission to hide her witchy ways, but the discovery of a body -- and the poltergeist that accompanies it -- at The Overlook tips everything into turmoil.
Landon's mother doesn't trust them -- and his Aunt Blanche is moving in on Aunt Tillie's man (which is causing more trouble than anyone saw coming). That's on top of the paranormal havoc the poltergeist is wreaking in every corner of town.
Bay and Thistle are convinced Aunt Tillie knows something about the body the construction company unearthed while erecting her beloved greenhouse. The problem is, she won't admit it.
Landon is on vacation. Chief Terry is on edge. Clove is hiding something -- and it has nothing to do with the poltergeist. That's on top of the fact that Bay's mom and aunts are feigning eternal ignorance.
The poltergeist is out for blood, though -- and it will only settle for Winchester blood.
When everything comes to a head, a long-held Hemlock Cove secret will be unveiled -- and it's not what anyone is expecting.

This is the 5th book in the series that I've read in about a week so let me just say: it was good, I liked the poltergeist plot, although it only showed up at opportune moments when the Winchesters weren't acting like immature children.

What really disappointed me was this was a pivotal point when more dimension could've been added to the characters, particularly Landon, and it failed to do so.  Very little has been revealed about Landon's past, other than introducing his family.  The end was a little implausible as well.  I fail to see why it's so important to keep their witchy-ness a secret when everyone in a 3 state radius already knows.  It's grating on my last nerve, along with the constant lying about trivial things that Bay, Clove and Thistle can't seem to get past.

Overall, still enjoyable but not without a few a few detractors.

Something To Witch About: Wicked Witches Of The Midwest Book 5
Reading in chronological order not necessary but advantageous.

The Protagonist: Bay Winchester, journalist, is a witch, with the unique ability to see ghosts. Bay has inherited this gift from her Great Aunt Tillie. All the Winchester women are witches, but they have various abilities. They live together in the Town of Hemlock Cove: where they are neither welcomed or shunned.

The Plot: Bay's beau, Landon, has invited his family to meet her. That is enough to make any girl nervous. Add to that the cantankerous Aunt Tillie, and anybody's nerves would be tense. Then a skeleton turns up on the Winchester property. It's downhill all the way with Aunt Tillie in the frame for murder and the skeleton's poltergeist on the rampage!

It was good to see Clove hook up with Sam, a beau of her own. Clove meets Sam in secret. Her cousins to whom she is very close, don't like Sam. It adds a dash of reality to the story.

It was to be expected that Landon's mother would not be enamoured with Bay or that the two great aunts in the family would not get along. Landon is, well, Landon. The same applies to Thistle's beau Marcus. There is no character development. I think this book was a missed opportunity to develop not just the regular characters but to open the story up. It is a series, and it is not easy to keep the momentum up, so it makes the missed opportunity more of a waste.

I anticipated this book would have been as exciting as book 4. The book got off to a promising start, but it did not live up to expectations. It's okay.

5 Stars... It was so great being back with the crazy Winchester witches and watching them engage in all of their insane antics... Attempting to impress Landon's family is a trial in and of itself, when human bones are discovered on her aunt's property, Bay must battle an angry poltergeist and attempt to prove Aunt Tillie.... Innocent???... Another rollicking adventure with Bay, Landon, Thistle, Clove, and, of course, Aunt Tillie that left me laughing out loud and swooning in the next heartbeat... I absolutely loved every word and look forward to continuing these adventures with these sassy and witty witches:)

Why only two? Too much coincidence to resolve plot issues that frankly are just too convenient. Too much reliance upon tropes that should be have been resolved by book 2. Too much bickering by the main characters cousins. Really? Still the foolishness by characters we're expected to take as responsible business women who are repeatedly remind us that they are old enough to lead their own lives, make their own choices without the interference of their mothers and about the really only interesting character among the character, Aunt Tillie, but she is also getting a bit annoying. How many times do we have to be told that she is pure evil, but yet everyone tolerates her and even loves her. The love interests are unbelievable: an FBI agent who hasn't really had a case since his first appearance and seems to spend most of his time hanging out in a small town interfering in police cases. Marcus who if this were a television series would really serve no other purpose than brief flashes of eye candy in a stable or morning after post-shower towel scenes. He is merely there for FBI Boy Landon to have someone to agree that dating these Winchester women is difficult. I know this is light reading, but this book missed. There was no suspense; seriously, did anyone believe for one minute that Tillie was the killer? Or that Landon's mom wouldn't come around (in what has to be the biggest and least likely coincidence of them all). I really want to like this series, and I keep reading them hoping that they will move beyond the basics, but just when I think it's getting better...well, this happened.

Well this one is all about family. We have Landon's family there to visit along with bay's family and at one part theirs fathers were there as well. It was funny watching all the families and all the insults flying. The mystery was an actual poltergeist this time. Trigger warning of domestic violence in this one. It was also nice to see a softer side to aunt Tillie.

It's like they aren't bad enough yet for me to just quit. Perhaps it is because I'm not looking to get to know any new characters because I'm so busy with real life. But maybe when things settle I can get on to reading more interesting books. So Landon's family is in town? *sighs*

I had hopes...and it did have it's moments...but to be honest, I'm starting to grow tired of Landon! The cousins' mothers do not bother me, Aunt Tillie has moments of brilliance...and even the cousins aren't all completely bad...even though their bickering is back to bothering me. BUT, Landon is becoming borderline abusive, right? Is that just me? And the way he talks to Bay in front of her family and even his own? I don't want to hear about my daughter's sex life, the way he is so open about theirs...And he is very possessive and bossy and passing it off as, "I'm worried..."....Yea, I don't know...

And the turn of the mom all of the sudden being cool with it all? Blerg.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Landon's family is coming to Hemlock Cove to stay at Bay's family's inn. When she meets Landon's mother things don't go too well. Landon also has an aunt like Bay's, and the witch is about to hit the fan. But when a body of bones is found on the inn's property things start to get a little tense. And when Bay's aunt may be the main suspect things don't look so good for them, especially when an evil ghost starts to fixate on Bay.

This one was a great addition to the series. I adored the drama between Bay and Landon's family, it was great. I also thought Bay's family literally having a skeleton in their "closet" was great. It added a whole new depth to the story, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one a lot.

I can't wait to read more now.

When I read the first book in this series "Any Witch Way You Can," I was not impressed. It was a fun read but the family’s bickering and fighting just got so old. It almost became annoying.
I’m not sure why I read Book 2 "Every Witch Way But Wicked" but I’m glad I did. Either I became use to the bickering or it wasn’t as intense. Regardless it turned out to be a great series and I hope it continues.
Thank you for several great books, Ms. Lee!!!

Good, but not great...

Always look forward to another episode of this crazy family, but didn't think this one was quite as good as the previous ones... there was too much back and forth talking and fighting and not enough story. Hope the next one has a little more plot and less snark!

I liked the ghost story but, the characters started out quirky and are now just annoying. Landon is rude, I don’t get the appeal of this character. He acts like a controlling dad, not a supportive boyfriend

Okay, this review is hard. First, I'll start out that I still like (most) of these characters and she had me laughing out loud during the dinner scene when they girls had to tell the truth. Next, the story itself was fun - she introduced new characters and gave some insight into the past of some of the ones we know. That's the good stuff.
The bad stuff: I realized when I listened to the last book a second time that her writing isn't all that great. Her narrative is fine, but her dialogue violates some of the rules that are basic to good writing. Almost all of her dialogue tags had an adverb after them. She was whining and complimenting and replying. It wasn't as bad in this book as it was in the previous, but it was still noticeable and distracting. The average reader might not care, but as a writer myself, trying to get better at the craft, I was really disappointed.
The next thing is that Landon is starting be kind of a jerk. Again, this was more obvious in the last book, but his relationship with Bay is coming across like it's all about him - and she'd not correcting him. At one point I was yelling in my car that he needed to get over himself and consider her point of view. I wouldn't put up with it if I were in a relationship with him and she doesn't give any good reason why she does. Maybe that's too deep for a cozy, but it's really beginning to bother me.
Since I did listen to this, I have to say that the reader (Aris) was kind of getting on my nerves. Maybe her portrayal of Landon is one of the reasons I think he's a jerk - it most certainly was with the last book, because again, when I read it - none of the above reared it's ugly head. This time around, if I hadn't known better, I'd have sworn Thistle was a Valley Girl. Short of "Oh, my god!" her intonations just had me mocking Thistle's dialogue.
Finally, in doing research for my MFA, I checked out her blog and she indicated that while a reader might not think a 3 star rating is bad, advertisers do. Sadly, I wanted to give this book a 3 star rating, but I also don't want her to lose advertising. As a writer, myself, I want her to succeed, so my rating is a little inflated because I'm trying to do the right thing.
If none of what I have said grinds you the wrong way, buy her work and enjoy it. It's what she's writing for and I don't want to take her livelihood away, but I do have to be honest about what I think, because if I'm not, then I won't honest to my own brand.

The Michael's visit and, yep, it's a big fat mess!!

Landon arranges for his family to visit Hemlock Cove and meet Bay.. a week-long stay at The Overlook that starts with a terrified Bay and Aunt Tillie under strict orders to behave.

Connie and Earl, Landon's parents are also travelling with Denny and Daryl his brothers and their very own crazy aunt. Blanche might not be magical but she's just as feisty and ready to cause maximum annoyance as Tillie and there's no hope of the pair hitting it off!!

Doesn't take long for all Bay's worries to start coming true.. Connie isn't happy.. Blanche and Tillie are at daggers drawn and then a body, well skeleton, turns up on the glasshouse site..

Mayhem ensues with Bay unleashing the body's soul in the guise of a poltergeist.. it's all getting out of hand when Tillie, Mrs Little and the victims wife all refuse to talk.

Poor Chief Terry isn't getting answers and with everyone trying to "act normal" for Landon's family there's a lot of sneaking around..

When the chips come down can Bay discover the truth, forgive her family and resolve the case without losing anyone? To finish the job she's going to have help from a rather surprising source..

Funny, face paced, snark.. Lee at her best.

Liked it

A week in the life of a witch and her dysfunctional family including trying to hide that they are witches from her FBI boyfriend's family visiting for the week, a 50 year old skeleton found on the property, and lots of family drama. Otherwise known as a humorous cozy mystery with a side of romance that you probably won't get if you haven't read the previous books in the series.

While this book still has one main mystery to solve (the 50 year old skeleton) there are so many unresolved things going on it feels more like a slice of life book that happens to include a mystery than a dedicated mystery. Since I tend to find the characters humorous and I'm reading the books back to back that's not a problem for me. I liked seeing the main couple romance take a maturity step forward, and the heroine wasn't quite so stupid as in previous books before the end. Thumbs up from me.

*****Spoiler Alert*****
This Book Includes
Violence.
scene of domestic abuse, poltergeist activity causing injuries, stopping abuse by beating with rolling pin.
Sex. MF sex occurs off-page.

The best part of this book is the inter-family squabbling that always goes on with the Winchesters.

Aunt Tillie wanted a greenhouse built. What she didn't expect was the finding of bones during the digging. Bones of a long-dead guy that Aunt Tillie is suspected of killing.

If that wasn't enough of a problem for them to deal with it turns out Landon's family is coming to visit for a few days at the inn. Just what Bay needed; to meet his mother. Does the first dinner they have together go well? Of course not.

Then there's the problem of Clover and Sam seeming to be together.

And, if that wasn't enough, there's a poltergeist on the loose causing (as they do) havoc.

So, how did Floyd (a very, very nasty drunk guy who beat his wife) die? Did someone murder him? Will Bay lose Landon due to his mother's seeming strong dislike of Bay? Will Aunt Tillie get the gallows?

Another really good (and oftentimes funny) book.

Bay Winchester's life is never easy but these days seem unnecessarily complicated. Right now, her father is building an inn with his two ex-brothers-in-law that is going up against her mother and her mother's sisters business, her cousin Clove is sneaking around doing who knows what, her boyfriend Landon's family is in town visiting and his mother doesn't really seem to approve of her, her great aunt Tillie is growing pot and her new greenhouse just dug up a set of bones, when Bay goes down with Landon and the police chief to see what is going on, a poltergeist shoots right through her. The remains are identified fairly quickly and Tillie seems to be a viable suspect for the death. As Bay tries to clear her great-aunt Tillie's name, she is also working not to alienate Landon's mother completely nor let his family see exactly how different her family is.
There was a lot of movement forward for Bay as well as her two cousins in this book which was highly enjoyable.

I've not been doing much in real life lately....

....thanks to this series 😂 having kindle unlimited has made it possible for me to read one a day! What I've found out about these books is that the author purposely "tells" a piece of the conclusion at some point in the middle when all the harried conjecture is being thrown about. It's usually thrown off as not being a valid theory, and then, in the end, it's proven! This book also touched upon a subject that irritates me to no end (and I'm glad she brought awareness to it): abusive partners. The one part I was surprised by was the fact that Mrs. Gunderson hadn't found someone to take Floyd's place. In my experience, women who have been abused like that unconsciously seek out the same type of person again if the original abuser is gone. Sad, but true. We all need an Aunt Tillie in our lives to tell us how it is!

Good clean mystery filled with humorous sarcasm & witt...

Another great laugh out loud Winchester Witches mystery... I just love the way this series is written. The relationships between the characters is built up from book to book in a really believable way. The mysteries unfold nicely and the solutions always seem to have a surprising twist which makes it unpredictable and enjoyable. The sarcasm, witt & drama are all written in an excellent way and once again, I couldn't help but laugh out loud and giggle at Aunt Tillie & the things she says & does...
If you like good clean mysteries filled with humorous sarcasm & witt, you'll love this series.
Each book is a separate mystery but it's great to follow the relationships from the start of the series...

Journalist Bay Winchester can see ghosts. Her boyfriend works for the FBI. She, her two cousins, their respective mothers, and her Great-Aunt Tillie are witches. She lives in Hemlock Cove, a Michigan town which, to bolster their economy, has rebranded itself as a "spooky vacation" location.
Her boyfriend's brothers, parents, and his Great-Aunt will be staying at the Inn run by the moms for a week. What could possibly go wrong?

Naturally, everything. Construction on a new greenhouse for the Inn uncovers a 50-year-old body. Bay goes to see and discovers that she can also see, hear, and FEEL poltergeists. When the body is identified, it turns out that he was likely murdered - and the prime suspect is Aunt Tillie!

And you thought small-town life was boring?

Overall, I have enjoyed this series, and I like this book as much as I did the first. The introduction of the Landon family brought an interesting twist to the book and series. The focus being mainly on the two families getting to know one another, there was little
‘witch’ activity. What there was of the ‘witch’ activity, it had an interesting twist and a depth that the other books did not have. However, the series we experience repetitive interact, dialogue, and the squabbling at times override the story. So far there has not been any character development in maturity or enlightenment of self. Hopefully, I will see it in the next book. Next Up in the series "Witch Me Luck".

4 ⭐️ this was my favorite book of this series so far! These books are fun and I love that they’re quick reads (all less than 300 pages)

I would also like to stress that these ratings are truly based off the vibes of the story, and how much I enjoyed reading it, not necessarily the quality of the writing. (Not shade!!) This is not a 4 star read I would hold up to a SJM 4 star read. Completely different, and not just in genre!

Anyways, I’m really enjoying these books, and since they’re all on KindleUnlimited, I’m enjoying the palate cleanser until I decide what I want my next ~fully encapsulating~ hyperfixation series to be.

Funny!!!

I love this series and all the characters in it.
This book introduces Landon's family who come to stay for a week and meet Bay. On the first day itself!of, a body is dug up by the contractors making the greenhouse. It is a very old skeleton and has links with Aunt Tillie. What is the mystery behind it?
When the skeleton was unearthed, a poltergeist was let loose who fixated on Bay.
Will the family be able to solve this mystery?
There was a nice twist at the end.
Landon protective instincts are shown in this book.
Ready for the next book.

Awesome you need to check this one out

This is an awesome series. A family of earth and kitchen which is in a little niche town in northern Michigan. They solve mysteries murders in supernatural twists around. A snarky and sarcastic telling of an entertaining story. Great cast of characters always entertaining read. You will love great aunt Tillie she is the most persnickety character of the bunch. And the cousins are definitely snarky and sarcastic and extremely entertaining to listen to. Onto the next book in the series

Secrets, lies and poltergeists.

Awesome. Meeting the family has thrown her into a tizzy especially when it is made clear to her that his mother hates her. Throw in a skeleton, a poltergeist, old secrets and an effort to hide the truth. Can she and her cousins get to the bottom of this? Aunt Tillie is brilliant in her efforts to foil all attempts to get to the truth. However the greatest surprise comes not from finding the murderer but from the revelations made by our FBI's mother. Loved the way the characters interacted, the humour and and sarcasm. All wrapped up in a well crafted work.

Pretty much perfect summer reading, this is exactly what I needed when looking for funny, light hearted fun with lovable characters and a bit of mystery and action. These witches worm a way into your heart and make small town life seem suddenly very appealing. The humour is snarky and outrageous, family turns from enemy to closest ally in the blink of an eye and suddenly I very much want an Aunt Tillie of my own.

This is a review for the whole series as I have inhaled these books at speed and to be honest I will keep on reading until I have run out of books. A new fan.

I enjoyed another series by the same author, and her books are free on Kindle Unlimited, so I gave this series a chance, reading all the books back to back, so they all run into each other in my head. It was fun. If you like cozies (light mysteries without much suspense - think "Murder She Wrote") and you like paranormal novels, this series is perfect for you. The characters are loveable and a lot of fun. The mysteries are not that hard to solve, but enjoyable all the same. Aunt Tillie is a really funny character.

London's family comes to visit Hemlock Cove.

Landon's family is coming to Hemlock Cove to meet Bay and her family and also staying at the Overlook while visiting. Things are intense enough for Bay with dealing the visit, but they quickly get worse when the credit working on Aunt Tillie 's greenhouse unearth the bones of a body. And when Bay investigates, instead of a ghost, she gets a poltergeist that starts following her around. This was a great story that really focused on Bay and Landon's relationship. On to the next book.
