The fact that the hero in "His Pretend Baby" is on the autism spectrum was a big draw for me. Probably because of the field I'm in. Reading this made me smile at parts. This isn't the first book I've seen that featured a hero on the spectrum (yay!) and there should be more romances featuring main characters on the spectrum.

This story is a solid 3.5 stars because I couldn't put it down.

The premise is a little soap opera-y and towards the end it got to be too soap opera-y that I can't round up.

"Go" or Rodrigo (the nickname Go threw me off a lot) is a billionaire tech geek, a product of Mexican immigrants who thinks different. He founded a company that he had tailored to his needs. He thinks differently, loves plans (don't deviate from his plans), has sensory issues and is a success story.

Nyla, his heroine, is a former foster kid, punk alternative "freak" with tattoos and multiple piercings that she uses as an armor. She also works in a domestic abuse shelter, doesn't trust from years of rejection from people she tried to trust but loves her job to help others.

One drunken mistake lands Nyla pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's baby. Sadly, her ex is killed soon after sharing her positive pregnancy test. But her ex's brother steps in with a crazy plan to marry and pretend it's his baby.

Don't deviate from the plan. :)

Go (I can't believe I'm referring to a human man as Go) is an alpha male all the way. Nyla, with a master's in psychology sees him, understands him and instead of trying to change him to fit her norms, she makes him comfortable in his skin. She meets his family and though they mean well with a teasing nickname (Berger for Asperger's), tries to show them in a few words that the nickname isn't nice.

The two start with a fake relationship, or that's what Nyla thinks as she agrees to Go's plans and marries. But...it wasn't fake on his end.

Go likes it rough. And prefers to do all the touch. That first sex scene...just that illusion of breath play. I wished it was... *moans* oh how I wished it was.

The have chemistry, the internal filters work differently but whoo boy...they were on even ground in their relationship.

*smh* The villain and their antics with added concentrated drama (past off page incest), the way the ending sort of baits the reader into thinking the worst possible happened, I wasn't a fan of. I liked the interactions between Nyla and Go up until the honeymoon. A lot happens afterward and I'm sort of sold on how it all went down, sort of not.

The execution? Eh...it's okay. *squints* Sometimes the main characters read like caricatures, Nyla always emphasizing her piercings and tatts, Go being like a robot. Instead of letting them be them, they were their descriptors. I wished there was less of that, I might have rated higher.

Overall, the story is good, the premise is awesome.

This story made me happy in a way.

We're all wired when we get down to basics, sometimes differently but it's perfect & unique all the same.

"His Pretend Baby" attempted to show how.

I loved LOVED it.
She is my next ‘it’ author!
I always enjoy reading love stories of couples with different personalities.
Where do I begin.. hero Go (Rodrigo) is somewhat on the spectrum with poor social skills and sensory processing issue (which mind you made the Hot scenes HOTTER.. way hotter). But he is also brilliant in robotics. Everything depends on ‘plan’ to him. And I loved him. His quirky ways, his nerdiness, his processing, choice of words, everything! Enter heroine Nyla, pierced, tattooed, independent, bold and lives to please only herself. She is a tortured soul. I loved her too. They were a perfect match. Like hero likes to say ‘she is the disruption to his (carefully laid) plans’!
The story had depth and the twists and suspense I never saw coming. I enjoyed that too. I couldn’t get enough of them. The one thing I cheered on was Nyla didn’t forgive Go easily eventhough he begged. A rarity now a days in romance.
And epilogue.. insanely good. Especially Nyla’s announcement and Go’s reaction.
You should definitely give this book a chance.
Recommended.

This was an excellent book; several noteworthy reviews were given about Rodrigo's (aka Go) eccentric ways but Asperger's syndrome is "a developmental disorder related to autism and characterized by higher than average intellectual ability coupled with impaired social skills and restrictive, repetitive patterns of interest and activities." So imagined a tough girl, Nyla with geeky Go or Rodrigo and you have the making of a memorable and great goodread!

Nyla is pregnant by her ex-boyfriend, Marco who dies in an awful car accident. She was able to tell Marco of the pregnancy before his death, and he let her know that this was never "in his plan." WHAT?? Nyla wants to tell his parents as a way to bring a part of Marco back into their lives but Go is not having it so Go, the late Marco's younger brother, a month later devised a plan and the story is off-- fast--quick page-turner, sexy galore, deception, laughs, tears and even mystery/suspense.

If you like Theodora Taylor's other books in the 50 Loving States series, you will love this one too! Because plans can be instantly disruptive with the right person as in "His Pretend Baby."

4.5 Dis' or disruptive stars ****.5

Oh my gosh!!! This is my first book by this author and if everything she writes is like this...I’ve found a new favorite author!!!

I went into this thinking it was going to be a fast read with an over the top hero and something that might fall in line with an Alex Riley book. I was sooo wrong!!! Yes, it was fast but holy heck!!! It was sooo much more than what AR gives us!!!

Because Tone® Pullover Hoodie - Navy Blue | That Pedal Show Store

This heroine is all kinds of weirdish, but there’s a reason for it. I wasn’t sure if I’d like her but I totally fell in love with her but mostly because of how she really screwed up the hero’s “plan”. She had some things to overcome and she did but this isn’t one of those magically fixed things, despite the length of this book, she really has to face some things head on.

Go, the hero, was so incredibly amazing! He fed all my hero hungers in one bite! I loved that he was geeky but somewhat possessive but more importantly that he just couldn’t compute how Nyla could interrupt all his plans. I don’t have the adequate words to describe him and really, you just need to read this to understand.

While this can be read in a couple of hours, this has so much substance to it. I couldn’t believe I
was getting all the feels, emotions, action and drama laced with plenty of humor in such a short read. This never happens for me. But man oh man, when I got to the last part of the book I was amazed at all that was happening and how cohesive it was to what went on previously. Let me also say that this trope usually doesn’t work for me but I was more than okay with it because of the way this author developed the story.

Absolutely loved this and cursed my book friends who haven’t pointed this author out to me before now.

Nyla is pregnant, the problem is the father is her ex-boyfriend who just recently died. Thinking that she can help his family through the mourning process, she decides to share the news that a part of him will still live on in the child she's now carrying. The fact that she never thought his family liked her much, deciding to share this information with them on the day of Marco, Nyla's ex's funeral, was probably not her best idea. Go, Marco's brother, refuses to let Nyla make a scene on this somber day and takes matters into his own hands. When Go finds out Nyla's reason for showing up is not only to pay her respects but to share her good news, he devises a plan to not only protect his family but also to protect his brother's memory. But as we all know, things don't always go as planned, and Go realizes that Nyla is not the planning type.
Once again from the beginning of this story, Ms Taylor has me questioning whether I'm going to love or hate this hero, and once again in the end she has me loving him. Go comes of as a very blunt jerk until you get to know, and then he still comes across as blunt but much more likable. Nyla has been let down before by those who were suppose to protect and love her. Now she just walks to the beat of her own drum, and doesn't conform to anyone's idea of normal but her own. This unlikely pair comes together and connect because they really understand each other the way know one ever has before and their faults, which I don't think they see as faults all, is what makes them truly perfect for each other. They just have to learn to trust in the feelings that they have for one another. This was another funny and loving story by Ms. Taylor that I really enjoyed. I give it 4 stars.

Go and Nyla.
Nyla's pregnant (why is every woman usually pregnant or ends up pregnant in IR novels?) and her dead ex-boyfriend is the father.

Awkward...

Go's the brother of said brother, and he decides to claim the baby as his own in order to spare his family the heartache(?) because that would mean he's a cheater.

I didn't get this book.

Nyla was supposed to be this badass biker chick with tattoos and an ironclad grip on herself, while also possessing a heart of gold that allowed her to really care about helping people. However, this isn't the character we get the novella. What we receive is a girl (not woman) who's afraid of everything in a way.

Not like mustard and spiders, but she's afraid of Go, getting into a committed relationship, being looked down on, loving, etc. When I read the blurb I was expecting a chick with some brass cojones that didn't take shit from anyone, but she took everybody's shit. Let me rewind a bit back to the funeral.

At the funeral, where (for some weird reason) she's not wanted, Nyla decides to tell the family her news (why would anyone do that at a funeral). Before she can Go snatches her up and demands she tell him why she's there. To make a long story short, she tells him and he decides the best course of action would be to pass the baby off as his own and raise it without anyone knowing the truth about his brothers bastard (that might sound harsh but I've been watching way too much historical tv).

At first she says no, but then my absolute worst nightmare theme happened, he donates a Nicki Minaj size butt load of cash to the place she works and she's obliged to accept because it's the right thing to do.

After agreeing to Go's plans the proceed to have the most awkward relationship ever.

I know Go has Asperger's and it's very difficult to depict this type of relationship and still make it romantic. I also understand that he's not going to be like other male leads and that's okay, but I don't understand the actions of his family and Nyla.

After meeting Nyla the first time go decides his brother should break up with her and make a plan. He makes plans for everything and Nyla just wasn't in the cards, plus he liked her. This wouldn't mean anything if...his brother didn't actually do it!

WTF?

I don't get it. Then Nyla just wasn't strong. I imagined her following Go around like a lost puppy with no sense of direction. Why make her character so weak and insecure with a man like him who really needed someone opposite him (carefree and wild) but also secure in herself. Go wasn't a bad male lead, he was actually kinda sweet once you got used to his way of thinking and acting, but everyone else fell short.

So woah and wow.

Woah: this book ends at 15% on my kindle. Wasn't prepared for that.
And wow: Asperger's dirty talk and robot boy sex *snicker*.

This was different and I like different.

Nyla & Go make a go of it.

This story was fun. I love fake relationships. The humor that the author infused made Go and his ways less rigid. I believe his Aspergers was done well and the dialogue was believable. Nyla was a likable heroine with a kind heart. I loved the things she said to Go that allowed him to feel less of an “other” in his family and life. She was a great match for him.

There was some subjects like abused lightly discussed but they were not delved into. But I wish there was more interaction with the family since they knew more than they let on about the Nyla and Go.

Whoa. That ending completely ruined it for me. The author tried to be clever and ended up ruining the romance entirely. I will include the spoilers at the very end for those who want to know what has me totally upset.

I liked this book a lot... and then the 3rd act drama went absolutely 🦇💩. Completely bonkers.

I mean, the book wasn't perfect before, but the end was a complete 🎢

1. The marriage of convenience negotiation was so beautiful. When you leave hope open for a future happy and healthy relationship and lay the groundwork of admiration and respect... ugh, I half fell in love with him at this point!

"...how about the part where you give up... a loving and happy marriage like your parents have? Don't you believe you can have that? If you marry me, you'll be giving up your chance to have that."

"Not necessarily."

Something changes in the air between us at that moment. It suddenly seems like there's an electric fence dividing us, crackling with a new kind of tension and I have to ask, "What do you mean, 'not neccesarily'?"

Go looks away from me and I can swear I can see his jaw working under his beard. "I've read a few things over the years and, from what I've read, someone like you might be good for someone like me."

"Someone like me?" I repeat, not really understanding.

He keeps his eyes trained on his hands and rocks in his seat once, twice, and then just stops, as if making a mental decision to restrain himself. And as clearly as he's spoken throughout most of the conversation, his next words come out in a rushed mumble, "someone with a backgound in psychology, someone accepting, someone I believe when she says she prefers to be honest, someone who doesn't run out of the room when I'm honest, someone who is brave, someone who is interesting for me to look at..."

He tries and seems to fail to look up at me, shifting his attention to the red table between us instead. "Someone like you might be good for someone like me, maybe."

2. This man and his plans! He is pretty rigid, but Nyla disrupts all of his plans... and it's fun. This is after he takes her from behind on their wedding night, cause she went off his script. A man that promises ice cream? Yes, please.

The plan was to take you to bed, Nyla. Let you get used to me. Let you adjust to me slowly. I planned to be nice, like Marco, then feed you ice cream afterwards.

AND NOW... SPOILERS! You were warned.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
3. After they've had an amazing honeymoon, where it's obvious that both of them are crazy for each other, a scandal breaks and Go doesn't believe Nyla when she says she had nothing to do with it. And he kicks her out of his life. I was so upset for her. But hoped there was a way for him to redeem himself.

4. After his investigators find that Nyla couldn't possibly have done what she was accused of, he begs Nyla to come back... and says HE'S ALWAYS LOVED HER! Uh. When you've rejected me just recently and you're apologizing, I don't need/want to hear that you loved me AND you didn't trust/believe me. How can she ever relax with him again!? She has trust issues... and he just exacerbated them. Why authors make their main character break trust like this AFTER they are supposed to have built trust... I will never understand.

5. Nyla takes some time to think and ends up coming home to him. She walks in on him kissing someone else... but when he explains himself and says it isn't cheating (it's not), she BELIEVES HIM and lists all the ways she knows it wasn't cheating because SHE KNOWS HIM... and the actions are congruent with who he is. So... I KNOW SHE LOVES HIM. But I do not believe in his love for her. And nothing that happens for the rest of the book disabuses me of that.

6. And (SUPER SPOILER)... the author has a trick ending/epilogue where she makes the reader believe the hero DIED. WTF!? But he didn't. But, after that "trick", my heart was done and I didn't feel all warm and cozy. I mean, I would have had a hard time feeling cozy at the end of this drama shit show, but I DEFINITELY felt crappy thinking he had died.

7. There is a bizarre spanking scene where the dude slaps her really hard on her butt. She's like "ow, that hurts. Why did you do that?" And he's all "I'm going to keep hitting you until it's pleasurable"... and then all the sudden she's loving it. Except it didn't sound sexy. It sounded like nonconsensual pain during sex... and might I even say... physical abuse!?

----

So, ya. I would not suggest reading this book and I will never touch another book by this author.

This was cute.

I liked that the two mains were a little off center. I especially liked how being on the spectrum manifested itself in many of Go's personality quirks. I also liked how well the author used Nyla's past to inform her present personality. It wasn't over-done to the point where I felt like it was a cheap shortcut, but rather just a smart underline to explain why she is so protective of herself.

I will say I think this book felt short. It ends at 15% on my kindle e-reader. It is hard to say how long this book actually is because it is bundled with three other full length books. In page length I would estimate with was about 150? maybe. It is enough to create a grounding in the characters and get you invested in Go and Nyla but not enough to fill in some emotional blanks. For instance Marco's death in the beginning didn't seem to touch Nyla. She expressed regret but it felt just like a set up to just get her to the MOC with Go. Also in the end she does something really, really huge and yet, we jump to an epilogue and there doesn't seem to be any emotional fall out from that.

But all in all I did like this. It was fun. Go and Nyla were sexy. And they worked well together and had good chemistry. I just wish the book had felt just a bit fuller.

Style: Billionaire Romance (IR)
Story: 3.5/5
Enjoyment: 3/5
Dark Level: 0/5
Sexual Level: OK
Triggers: Yes
Violence:
Male: Stoic
Series: Book 1
Pages: 168
Audio: GOOD (f)
Kindle Unlimited: Yes

STORY:
So key word, PLAN. That word is going to be stuck in my head for the next few days. This story gave me so many mix emotions. I can honestly say, I don’t think I have ever experienced this combo. I like it; it was weird and awkward all in one. An hour into this audio, I wasn’t sure how to feel about the start of this story. However, it all made sense once the story unfolded. Nyla is pregnant with Go’s late brother’s baby. Go devises a plan to create a fake marriage with Nyla to raise the baby.

Go was definitely a unique character for me, and he gave me anxiety throughout this story. It was different, and I like different. His character is dear to my heart because of his Asperger. I felt like his Asperger was also the third main character in this story, and not in a bad way. Nyla was not what I expected. Her and Go were such an odd mix, but getting to know her, you see why it worked with her and Go. I also enjoyed the climax of the story, as it was not what I expect with the turn of events.

SEXUAL CHEMISTRY
So I was not all the way happy with the sex scenes. They felt almost like teasers, and then it was snatched away from me. I liked that from some scenes I got to see a bit of Go dominant side that peaked out.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS:
Go’s family was interesting. We didn’t see them a lot, but I love that thanksgiving moment with them. I like the other characters that made this story interestingly well, good or bad.

OVERALL:
A quick and likable story that surprisingly put a smile on my face that I was not expecting. Would I check out the other books in the series, yes.

TRIGGERS: mention of child sexual abuse.

****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.

So, I am early with this review but I didn't receive an ARC. I got it today and couldn't wait to read it. Theodora Taylor has been really hit or miss lately and the last loving states book that was worth a re-read was Her Russian Surrender... at least for me. The synopsis for this book was fun and the preview funny.

Nyla was so, so great. I typically avoid first person POV but it was a delight to be in her head. She was strong without being abrasive and while she had to deal with some of her fears she was never stupid. More heroine like this, please!!!!

I find that my favorite TT heroes are the ones that deviate from the jackass alpha for reasons other than love made them see the heroine as a human rather than a set of holes (entitled, navel gazing white men are never going to work for me, Henry Cavill look alike or not). Go was totally that. He wasn't really an ass or rather his blunt speech and no nonsense attitude seemed like a feature and not a bug , most of the time he just suffered from diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of a clue. He also had some fears and failures to overcome. He had a moment when I wanted to snatch him bald (and a moment that if it hadn't been obvious what he was doing I would have DNF'd) but he gives good explanation, great apology, and fantastic grovel, so I was appeased, lol.

This book was good and I want to read it again (and yay for Japan!) but it is also making me apprehensive. The last time I got super excited after a good TT book she followed it up with eye roll inducing nonsense (I am still not quite over Her Viking Wolves or His For Keeps). I want Her Russian Brute to be good, please let HRBr be good!

ETA: I know TT said some time ago that she doesn't read reviews but she must read a few or somebody emailed her or something because she actually gave us a sense of place in this one. Not only do we get a feel for Portland but a decent portion of the book takes place there. And I am not being facetious... I was pleasantly surprised by all the little details.

4.5 Go stars!!!

This was my first book by this author and all I have to say is what talent!! Don’t let the length of this book fool you because man did it have depth! I ate this with a spoon and couldn’t get enough! This hero was a mix of a geek Alpha on the spectrum. I loved the amazing job this author did about Aspergers and the obvious research that helped created this complex alpha. The heroine and hero were both “messed” up and different, but they made sense. Sometimes things turn out best when you stray “from the plan.” Read and find out what this means. I also loved that Nyla was Black, but from the punk alternative lifestyle with piercings, tattoos and a reason behind why she marks up her body🥺. These two start a fake relationship for reasons you have to read about, but I love when it’s not fake on the hero’s part. It gets me everytime!

I enjoyed every scene between these two especially the steam scenes. Go doesn’t like to be touched except for certain ways (Aspergers), but when Nyla finds out how and that Go likes pressure..it’s game on! Just the scene with the breathing (Iykyk) totally hot. Just breathing I kid you not.

I’ll stop now, but just know that I loved this book immensely.

*** Book Q & A***

* How did the book make you feel?: I enjoyed this story and it is very unique, but I feel that the author missed a great opportunity for big angst and groveling. I enjoyed that the H is on the spectrum. This book reminded me a bit of The Madness of Ian McKenzie.
* How do you feel about how the story was told?: I enjoyed the pacing of this story until the end, which was a bit rushed.
* What did you think about the main characters?: I enjoyed this couple and felt a lot of the chemistry. I liked how Go had a plan for everything and what a hot mess the h was.
* Which parts of the book stood out to you?: The initial scene between the MC’s was scorching hot!
* What themes/tropes did you detect in the story?: This story didn’t fit within the typical brother’s baby, MoC trope, which made it very interesting.
* What did you think about the ending?: It felt a bit rushed and the evil OW was OTT, despite her tragic backstory. I wanted more grovel and reconciliation and could’ve done completely without the evil antics. Also, the epilogue hinted at something terrible. I hate being tricked! Not cool!
* What is your impression of the author?: I like this author a lot. Great story and humor, but give me more grovel!

I put this on my "will re-read" shelf and I have indeed read it many times over because it really is that good. One of the few books with a hero on the spectrum who feels realistically drawn and not just "autism's a shorthand for broody, moody and HAWT". And speaking of spectrums, Taylor's black heroines are diverse af. Give me your metalheads, your reality tv show diva vegans, your country music writers, your video game designers. Oh and I usually cringe when authors describe hair styles and clothing because it's almost like *cough* theyhavereallybadtaste *cough* but Taylor's heroines are serving LOOKS!
MANNN Nyla and Go are wonderful and sexy together, hard nipple twists FTW.
Theodora Taylor, I'd ask you to write faster but I want your best because no one else is giving me what you are which is EVERYTHING I NEED RIGHT NOW

4.5 amazing stars for a hero unlike any other

Fecking wow. I only finished this book 4 seconds ago so my thoughts are still scattered all over my living room but I have to write my wow review for this bloody book.

I don't even know where a book like this comes from. it's one of those books you kinda dismiss for the title/cover with a meh... but then you hear some buzz about it on social media and if you're anything like me you cannot be left out of a book movement.

I totally thought this His Pretend Baby was going to be naff, I feel shame for even saying it but I did.

A billionaire who is on the Asperger spectrum, who has a plan for every second of his life and can't deviate from said plans and doesn't have a filter for what he says, tells the preggers ex-girlfriend of his dead brother she has to marry him and pretend the baby is his... that's the story in a nut shell and while I love a forced marriage story ( a shout out to back in the day mills and boons! ) I so thought this would be a meh book.

How wrong I was. Right away I fell in love with the easy style of writing, how quickly the author drew me into the story and the way the characters grabbed me.

Go is just a hero you don't expect but he packs such a walloping punch. I'm so enamored. I want more books of his plans and the way Nyla disrupts all his plans and then they have ferocious cuddly sex where she can't look at him because he loves it too much. Omg. this fecking book!! And that little twist of just how much he wanted Nyla all along and the plan he put in place to get her. Swoon.

I was not prepared for this story so now I'm left all discombobulated.

And then you get Go who says things like:

description “Do you know what it does to me to watch a cool, tough girl like you come all over my nerd dick like that?”

“I don’t just like you…I really like you. I think I’m… I don’t know…hyper-focusing on you like I do with my plans and my A.I. work. But you’re not a robot. You’re a human woman, and I’m afraid I’m going to scare you away because I don’t just like you. I unhealthily like you.”

But it wasn't only Go who was so brilliant. Nyla was too:

description The truth is, nothing in the world has ever made me feel as powerful as ruining this beautiful man’s plans in the nastiest ways possible.

Suffice to say, if you want a hero that isn't all chest beating and alphaness ( my go-to hero! ) then give this book a try, be surprised af like I was.

Now I have to see if Theodora Taylor has a back catalogue I can raid! ( and or hope she writes more of Go and Nyla!! )

No?!?

This is a new to me author, but I saw the recommendation for this book on Dear Author (it was recommended in the thread about how Twitter is the best to get recommendations for books). There was a lot to love about this book: non-Caucasian main characters (he's Latino/Hispanic; she's African-American with lots of metal in her face according to her own descriptions); an unusual premise (he asks her to pretend that the baby she's having is his and not his dead brother's) and a quirky, nerdy hero who's an alpha in the bedroom, but otherwise very different from most contemporary romantic heroes.

The reason I only gave this book three stars was: (1) several typos; (2) it was too short. I really felt like we missed a lot of the development of their love story, although what was written was pure magic. A lot of times I think books have a lot of filler scenes that don't do much to either develop the main characters or move the plot along, but this is one book I really felt like we should have seen more of the love story develop.

Wow. Once this book took off, it trail-blazed! Not the usual "marriage of convenience" plot that is popular in romances. The BIG plot twist was great, if a bit over the top, the epilogue kept this book out of the cliff hangers zone, (thanks so much Mizz Taylor!). Go and Nyla were dynamic together, beautifully flawed, smart, snarky, sexy and complimenting one another in amazing ways. The smaller plot twist involving them was endearingly quirky. I'm a fan of this series after reading this book. Sweet overall concept, fabulous writing, superb character development and sterling plot. I recommend this author for anyone looking to read quality IR that is fresh, inclusive and insightful.

This is a really, really odd book. In some ways, those odd parts are great. I love the heroine. Her inner dialogue is great. The situation is crazy. She acts crazy.

Then, pour on the Harlequin Presents elements--the hero is a tech millionaire who is aloof. Marriage of Con.

Next add race, gender, class, and ability into the swirl.

There is a lot of fun to be had but there are some glitches in the writing and some unexamined presentation of ability, race, class and gender which make the book go sour in place.

However, I did enjoy the crazy over the top of it all.
