HIS EVERLASTING LOVE is a quick read with a paranormal bent. Willa Harper has the ability to not only see ghosts/spirits but she can also interact with them in a very real way. This proves to be both a gift and a curse for her. While pursuing her dream of becoming a physiatrist Willa's whole life changes in a way that is surprising even to the reader as things unfold.
When we meet Sawyer he is already on the other side of healing from a traumatic injury that has abruptly ended his military career. He is still struggling with the changes it has brought and hasn't quite settled into his new life. He has a plan for his life, it just isn't his own plan. Sawyer is really just taking the path of least resistance by following the career path that his overbearing father has laid out for him. Sawyer's relationship with Willa and her sister Thel started out back in high school where Sawyer was the school leader and main bully. Sawyer was the stereotypical over privileged, self centered, and arrogant rich boy in the school and everyone followed suit. Years later and with an inexplicable need to be near Willa, Sawyer is forced to face some hard truths and accept some unusual realities.
There is quite a bit to take in and accept with this paranormal story. The one thing that I had the hardest time accepting is the whammy in this story. I can't explain it since it is a huge spoiler. Suffice it to say, it is definitely a unique plot twist that is a little hard to reconcile with my idea of the limits of spirit/corporeal interactions. But then again, I can read vampire and shifter books and accept time travel so this component of the story should have been easier for me to buy. Another issue for me is that some of the story felt rushed and glossed over which made the flow of the story feel a bit off.
Although this may not be my favorite story from Taylor I did enjoy it. I am very much looking forward to reading the installment that will feature Willa's sister Thel. There is a lot that can happen and needs to be revealed about her situation. Taylor has teased us very nicely with the little breadcrumbs dropped about Thel. The conclusion of this story has a nice little bomb with Thel's name written on it waiting at the end!
. I hated the first and only book I read by this author (the first in this series) and so I am so happily surprised how much I enjoyed this one!!!
Willa and her sister were the daughters of the 'crazy librarian' in a small town... and the only black girls at the local high school. (there was no racism in the book except for stuff in the town's past).. yet there the girls were bullied from their first day at school by Sawyer. Sawyer is the son of the town 'royalty'. He's rich, good looking, quarterback.... yadda yadda yadda. So why does he feel the need to pick on Willa and coin her with the nick name 'Stork' because she's so skinny? He has no excuses and makes none, but he does apologize and is ashamed of the way he was back then. I liked that the author didn't try to excuse his behavior with some sob story.
Anyways, Willa and Sawyer meet years later in Germany under very different circumstances.
The story has flashbacks, and normally I dislike those but here they serve to help the story unfold. It's a mystery where the author doles out information to a captive audience. I worried about the controlling father and the obvious WRONG conclusions that Sawyer would inevitably jump to. But it all works out. The way this happens was a bit over manipulated by the author, but I still loved it.
I don't want to spoil things except to mention the obvious. Willa is not your typical teenager.
Safety is good I listened to the audiobook and the reader was very good.
This story is wild! 😂 It’s a little bit bonkers and unbelievable but it pulls me in, and since this is a paranormal story, I just ride with it and enjoy the story 😜.
Beside this book, I only read one other book from this author, which have a crazy storyline too! 😂 She has her own style of writing, many like it but is not always easy to follow. If her story didn’t pulled me in immediately, I wouldn’t pass the sample! 😬
Sooo imagine falling in love with a girl that you made fun of and picked on during your last year of high school and you don't see her again for several years and when you do it's in another country and you're a ghost and she's not but yet you fall in love yeah that's how the story went. Willa can see ghosts. That's right and the girls that she happens to see is none other then her tormentor in high school. You know the pretty boy the one all the guys want to be and all the girls want to be with. However when she sees him he's on the side it whether he wants to die or if you want to go back into his body and live she can help some with that. Very cute story I'm sure you will love it and interracial love story with a HEA ending.
As Theodora Taylor mentioned, this was a rather "unusual paranormal" story but I loved, loved, laughed it! The use of a phantom leg in the story was a great twist too !
This was Grant and Willa's story and it was truly memorable read for me. In high school, Sawyer seemed like he could do no wrong as the golden boy in high school and town's rich heir; whereas, Willa and her sister, Thel were the only Blacks attending that same school and children of the known "crazy librarian" who by the way was a nurse by professor (are you laughing yet!). Thel was given the name "Mouth" by Sawyer and Willa, "Stork". Several years later, Willa wins a fellowship to Germany in a special medical program and her first patient was non-other than her nemesis, Sawyer who was badly injured on a special military mission.
In this story, you see the cliques, status seekers but you learn early on that death changed some ghosts for the better as in the case of Sawyer's alcoholic mother Kate, and Dylan, the drunk driver who killer Trevor, Willa and Thel's younger brother. Ghosts (yes, Willow, Marian and little Trevor could see "dead people") were everywhere in this story whether they were family members, neighbors, KKK members, children up the road or down and my all-time favorite character was , Marian, the crazy librarian who was again, Willa and Thel's eccentric and comical mother!
You will have to read this unusual but carefully crafted story to believe it! You will laugh, cry, "say duh", have to put it down for a sec' but mind you, you will pick it back up and laugh some more.
I am not sure about this one. It was interesting. The romance was good. But the paranormal aspects felt confusing. Actually they didn't make sense. I know, I know... it is paranormal. But even so... still made me scratch my head. There is an 11th hour reveal that made me go 'say what now?' Mainly because of how the author built her paranormal world. But I guess we roll with it. I guess.
Outside of the PNR element this was actually a sweet romance.
There is sequel bait with the heroine's sister that was actually quite intriguing.
This was a weird book. I don't really know whether I liked it or not. I liked the characters well enough, although the cast of thousands was kind of distracting and confusing. This book isn't that long and there wasn't enough time spent on the main love story.
I got that the h/h were in lust but I never quite believed they were in love. I think I needed to see more of them falling in love and less of the I see dead people storyline.
This book is well written, pretty clean copy and it kept me reading but it was missing something. Still I would have given it 3 stars but the "twist". Had to knock a star off for that. Ok I will suspend my disbelief for the whole I see dead people thing but that. Nope. Dragged me right out of the story. I'd been having problems with believability but that was the final nail in the coffin.
I liked it. The ghost/spirit element completely worked for me. It's what made this book at all palatable. Taylor continues her mission to make Black women exceedingly, spinelessly forgiving of unforgivable flaws and deeds perpetrated by White men, and that conjures the ususal disgust and disdain. But that spirit element worked for me on numerous levels. That I loved, and makes me glad I bought this book.
The narrator was a little candy-ish and a little extra at times, with little bass in her voice for the male characters. She wasn't horrible, however, so the reading didn't detract terribly from the book.
This paranormal romance was definitely different from other books I’ve read and it was a bit unusual. There were a few things that I questioned, and the twist made things interesting. There was some mystery, suspense, and romance.
***Given ARC copy for honest review** Willa Grant has a complicated life. She's the daughter of the town's crazy lady and a med school drop out. She also has some secrets that she never wants revealed, so she really has no room for any other issues to crowd her world. Sawyer Grant is one major complication she can do without. To bad he feels just the opposite about her. Sawyer feels drawn to Willa and he can't figure out why, but he's determined to make her a permanent part of his life. When Sawyer finds out what Willa has been hiding will he be able to forgive her and accept her for who she really is. This is not your typical romance story. I mean, yes it has the hot sexy guy who's now a wounded veteran who needs help to adapt to life a little different from what he's used to. And yes, you have the beautiful woman, who has yet to realize that she is beautiful inside and out, she just needs to love herself as she is. What I didn't expect was the unorthodox way they first came together and the unexpected result of that coming together. That alone, which I'm not telling because you have to read for yourself, makes for a great story. If your looking for a hot romance with a little fantasy twist, I think you're gonna love this one.
Sawyer is drawn to Willa and he does not know why , but he feels like he has to have her so sets out to get what he wants . You hear the scenario in romance novels all of the time , but I promise you this one is different . This a paranormal story but not dark it's really light hearted , there are some emotional parts to this story , but it's funny too . Willa's mother will have lol and her sister will make you want to know her more . The telling of Willa's and Sawyers story was unique and I was drawn into their story , made feel like I was right there in the pages of the book and I found myself wanting more even after the last page.
So, this was better than expected (the last few entries in this series have been very underwhelming). The plot was a mix of Taylor's favorite plot devices and a whole lot of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. I didn't hate either of the leads and I am looking forward to Thel's book.
The romance between Willa and Sawyer was just as good, hot and unique as the other books in the series. The characters were just amazing. I am really not a fan of paranormal books but Whoa! This book had me from page 1. Willa Harper could see and communicate with ghost just like her mother, who her small VA town dubbed "The Crazy Librarian" and has tried very hard to not be seen or notice, there was only one problem, Sawyer Grant, the smug rich kid who made her life hell in high school. Fast forward 13 years and Sawyer is a ex Navy Seal amputee who is back in town and when he sees Willa again he can't help but feel a pull to her and can't understand why,but Willa knows and after she agrees to help him with is PT ,he just might find out. Great read, very interesting story with some really great twist and turns, it had my head spinning. I just love love love Ms.Taylor's writing and books. Each one has a bit of a surprise. This series is like nothing I have read before, and I can't wait for it to continue
At first I was a bit skeptic about the ghost- & spirit-thing. But it turned out, I really liked the story and Clementine did a great job with her narration.
Willa and Sawyer didn't have an easy relationship, but we get to know every step of it and it makes the book the more interesting.
It was my second Theodora Taylor book and I really like her style. Can't wait to read/listen to the next book.
I just finished listening to this audiobook and I really enjoyed it. The narrator has a great voice and her performance was great. This PNR romance is unique and emotional. I really loved this story and these characters, especially Willa. Highly recommend.
Hahaha I don’t know how to begin this review since I have a lot to say. A whole lot to say. So how about I just begin like this. Let’s talk about Nyla and Go first and then everything else afterwards.
The things that goes on between Willa and Sawyer is just wow. Sawyer is one of those popular boy in high school. Who used to bully Willa. But it take for him to be a ghost of a sort to realize his wrong doing. And after he deeply apologies to Willa, Willa informs him that he’s not dead, but stuck between the two folds. And that he has to make a choice if he wants to live or pass over.
Should be easy right, well as he’s making that choice he’s also getting along with Willa, and finding more about her. Who would’ve thought the crazy librarian woman daughter can be so attractive. Who is more or less his thoughts.
Willa’s mother Marian can speak and see ghost and spirit. She’s also known for giving books saying a spirit or ghost told her to. Not to mention she spends crazy amount of money on books.
Now Marian sounds like an awesome mom. She loves books and she tries her best to help ghost from both the past and the future. And while everyone else believe her to be crazy. She’s actually truly smart and was a nurse. She really smart that when Grant tried to take some of her land. She study up on some books and sue him and fought him with the help of ghosts to help guide her.
Now if that doesn’t sound like a badass mother, what will. The only problem with her is that the ghost and spirits priority over her family at times. If a ghost or spirits has any regrets, esp. concerning books she will spend whatever she has to go and help them. Even of her children goes hungry. Which is why Thel and Willa watches her spending. Which has cause them to go hungry more than once.
But they still love their mother. Another thing that I love while reading about Marian is the fact that she sees her daughter lives as a really good book. With a chapter just waiting to be unfold. She always excited when something new is revealed. She makes the book so exciting.
As for Sawyer and Willa I don’t know if I liked him very much. He really was a bully to her. But like my mother use to say to me. That when a boy pulls your hair it means he likes you, and I guess in this case he likes her.
I love how she fights their sexual attention as hard as she could and it took for one little kiss for both of them to fall hard. Even though Willa was trying her best to stay away. Sawyer would not allow her to ignore what is between the two.
I really enjoy this book and if you want in this book is somewhat part of the 50 state Russian series. Even though she doesn’t get with Russians and it’s her sister who does. Willa and Sawyer story also get involve with Thel’s, I believe this would be consider the 4th book of the series. Or a side book but it goes with the Russians series.
Now on to book # 2 and # 3, even though I kind of started both at the same time. I have a really bad habit in starting books out of order. Usually because the expert they leave at the end of the books are for earlier books or later books. Most of the times it’s the later books.
He really should be paying attention to what Donnie is saying about the safety features of his new motorcycle, but he can't stop watching her. She is sitting in a sales booth with Donnie's father and looks distressed at the news he is relaying to her. Evidently, she isn't liking the loan terms being presented.
Before he rides off on his custom Harley outfitted to accommodate his prothesis, he pays the full purchase price for the Chevy Volt that Stork is having a hard time buying. Stork...the name he gave her in high school because of her height and thin frame. She deserved the car after the way he had treated her in high school.
Sawyer hadn't set foot in his hometown for thirteen years and was only back to prepare for the political career his father wants for him. Stork's mother had ruined his father's chance of running for President. The Crazy Librarian as she is known throughout their small town. Not because she is a librarian, but because she gives out books saying she was told to deliver the book to them --- by the dead.
Willa is in shock. Sawyer Grant had just purchased a car for her. Her family is the only black family in the small town and they were reminded of that fact at every turn. Sawyer was the typical rich jock kid in high school...star running back, expensive car, cheerleaders hanging all over him. The whole school, administration included, worshipped him as he was charming to everyone except for her and her sister.
Willa had been lucky to receive a college scholarship and in her second year of med school was offered a fellowship in Germany at a regional hospital that served the armed forces. As she was shadowing a psychiatrist who specialized in amputees, Willa was trying to keep the shock from her face when she sees Sawyer in front of her in a state of frustration.
But, Sawyer isn't really standing in front of her. Sawyer was a Marine and had been injuring in Afghanistan. He is in a coma after his leg had been partially amputated and his ghost hasn't made the decision on whether to wake up or give up and die.
I loved this book! Clementine Dove did a wonderful job narrating this paranormal ghost romance. The book is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Sawyer regrets his actions in high school and refuses Willa's attempts to pay for the car he purchased telling her she can instead be his physical therapist since no-one had been able to help him in the six years since he lost his leg below the knee.
Despite Willa and Sawyer's undeniable chemistry, she is hiding a major secret from him and if he knew that she also spoke to ghosts he would be running as fast as he could in the other direction.
This story is action-packed from word one. This paranormal ghost romance is smoking hot and the twists and turns will keep you turning the pages. This isn't the first time I have listened to Clementine Dove and she brought the characters to life. Highly recommend!
Alright. Let me start by saying that my impression is likely affected by the fact that I took a LONG break from worrying about actively seeking IR books. The genre had so little quality writing/editing to offer years ago that it was breaking my heart and frustrating me. With everything thats happened in American SINCE? I figured now was the time to start seeking out some quality work by a diverse group of authors. Thus far, I'm assuming that perhaps that evolution has excluded good books from being marketed as "IR" overtly so I'm probably missing a lot in my searches. I'm tweaking.
Now, with all that said, I decided to give a familiar name a try. Knowing this is an older work, but this author is a solid writer in my estimation.
This..was a disappointment. A TON of potential but a very nonsensical story. Which is an odd thing to say about a storyline involving the paranormal. But still, girl..make it make sense. There are hard lines even when we suspend disbelief to embrace a paranormal work.
Add to that, the lack of information given about certain things that SHAPED these characters and this situation made them way less sympathetic than they would have been had more been divulged earlier. As it was, you just read it ready to beat the crap out of this woman for her behavior. Its also one of those stories where the OBVIOUS solution is so apparent that you just end up irritated watching someone go through such unnecessary foolishness. Nobody believes you can see ghosts? Prove it. Especially when one of the ghosts is someone they knew in life. FFS. Maddening.
So a 2 because it was literally just OK based on the fact that its not an editorial disaster and there was potential with the storyline.
In high school, Sawyer Grant was the bane of Willa's existence. She and her sister Thel were the daughters of the town's crazy librarian lady and caught hell for it. But finding herself in Germany at the same time that Sawyer was in a coma after being wounded and inheriting her mother's skills of seeing and communicating with ghosts, Willa tried her best to ignore the persistent undecided spirit of the comatose Grant. Their unworldly relationship brought ease to his upset spirit, not knowing what was going on. In their relationship, they both fell in love with each other when Grant decided he had something to live for, and his coma ended. Willa was no longer the tall skinny stork she was in school and she found out why all the girls went gah-gah over Grant when he was not bullying her.
Knowing he would not remember their time in Germany was torture to Willa. But she was the only PT that could help him with his problems with his gimp leg. Again, Willa tried her best to stay away from Grant but he kept pushing. She has a secret to keep. His dreams kept pushing him to her. He could not explain why. That was until he found out why she wanted to run. When she told him the entire story, he finally understood why he kept dreaming about her, why he was drawn to her, life just clicked now for him. Before he entered his portal of life, be vowed he would find her again and he did. His life was complete with Willa and Trevor. He was now living his life on his own terms and not the political games of his Admiral father, who now had a gentler, more understanding side too with a big turnaround in his life.
I loved reading the description of Bear Rustanov invading Willa and Grant's wedding. As usual, Marian just sits back to watch the action. All she needed was a bowl of popcorn.
There are a few problematic things in this book. Sawyer's mom is one of those things. I didn't like how it was just written off as death changing her, because only three people in this book can see her so her actions still linger. Second Sawyer was a straight up bully. He was a spoiled rich kid who took one look at the two Black girls at school and gave them nicknames that stuck until adulthood. Matter of fact, I don't even think he knew Willa's real name until she told him. Trauma was some sort of magical cure-all for his previous behavior. Maybe I have strong feelings because I don't care for bully romance. I'm fine with enemies to lovers, but bullies aren't enemies. They pick on those they perceive as weak. That's what Sawyer did. Also Sawyer's father's character change was just a huge plot convenience. So much of what he had done was completely forgiven without any effort on his part. He didn't even go see his own son when Sawyer was in a coma for three months, and that was forgiven with one little excuse. It wasn't much of an apology.
Certain parts were fine but as a whole this book is a bit much.
This was actually....palatable to get down. I'm not sure around which book Taylor decided that every single last one of her heroines would be embarrassingly apologetic doormats to her a-hole, predatory "heroes", but Willa didn't crash land into that category. Yes, there were still a few cringey and problematic parts in this story, but they weren't so bad as to leave a lingering acrid taste behind.
This was a quick paranormal tale of a woman falling for her high school bully's spirit whilst he's in a coma, and the two reconnecting 6 years later where she agrees to become his off-the-books physical therapist. The lore around this was a bit confusing as I couldn't tell who was alive and who was dead. I'm sure it was written that way on purpose that once a major plot point was revealed, it left me with a knitted brow. All I have to say about that particular reveal is...okay girl. There were some moments that were rushed so they didn't feel earned, but for a short story I can overlook that. Needless to say I didn't hate this like I've violently hated some of her other works, but I doubt I'd reread this. But hey, you might like it.
His Everlasting Love has a pretty interesting concept tied to Willa's ability to see ghosts, one that I hadn't seen before this book. I won't elaborate, so I don't get into spoiler territory, but I'll say that if you like when a paranormal romance pushes the envelope of what we expect, this is one you should read. The story takes place primarily in Virginia and it does have that Southern charm about it. It's a fast-paced, sexy romance with so many fun characters. There's a great mix of quirky characters in this town, and Sawyer and Willa are so easy to root for. This is part of a series, and the conclusion has a little bit of a lead-in for the next book, but it still works well as a standalone. I realize that I've been pretty vague here, but I can't go into much detail without giving away some major spoilers. Clementine Dove narrates the book, and she does a great job with so many different characters. It was easy to distinguish one from another, which is always something I look for in a narrator. This is my first experience with both the author and the narrator, but I will be checking out more of both.
3.00 stars. Life long friends to lovers as well as rivals or adversaries to lovers is one of my favorite genres; to that extent, I liked that Willa "Stock" Harper and Sawyer Grant became lovers. The catalyst of their journey to love was problematic; at least for me, because the author attempted to re-invent the wheel as it pertains to the mythology about ghosts and spirits. The author had a semi nude Willa in an open area on a hospital gurney thrusting and gyrating and moaning as she and Sawyer's spirit procreated. Crazy. But it is this lewd, weird yucky act that becomes the bedrock of Willa's and Swayer's and their son's journey to becoming a loving family. Ghosts and spirits can't touch or be touched, they can allow themselves to be seen, they can use telepathy to transmit thoughts and as poltergeist using telekinesis, they can move objects; succubus which are demons and not ghost are said to be able to have sex with a sleeping person. I said all that to say that the behavior of the ghosts in this story was bizarre compared to most ghosts:)
This was an adorable, quirky, paranormal love story. Willa, med school dropout and physical therapist has a secret: She can see and talk to ghosts. One ghost, most importantly, who was in between life and death, sort of an unsettled spirit, is that of Sawyer Grant. The for hot jock from her high school days, that made her teenage years a nightmare. They become friends in his spirit form, and that develops into more that leads Willa to keep another major secret. When Sawyer's spirit returns to his body so he can participate in the real world again, what happened while he was a spirit is forgotten by him..but not Willa. It wasn't until six years later, that their paths would cross again in their hometown and he buys her a car lol It goes from that to her providing him at home physical therapy sessions that he needs due to being an amputee. It all plays out into an unconventional love story. I enjoyed it. Wasn't a long book, but I really love these 50 Loving States books by Theodora Taylor! Most are excellent and this was no exception. Recommended!
