The Wyoming Cowboy #6

The Bachelor Cowboy

Rate this book
A rugged bachelor is up for charity auction in this special Valentine's Day romance from New York Times bestselling author Jessica Clare.

Jack Watson doesn't want anything to do with the dating scene in Painted Barrel, Wyoming, but when his sister-in-law guilt him into joining a bachelor auction, Jack can't say no to a charity event. He's not totally heartless. And if all the winner wants is an extra ranch hand for a few days, he can do that. Of course, Jack changes his mind as soon as he meets the winner, shy Layla.

As the local accountant, Layla isn't used to being noticed by men. She's sure not the type to bid on a bachelor. But when she tells her mom she's bidding on someone she has a crush on--and her mom shows up to check--she has no choice but to offer for the gruff cowboy. It's for a good cause after all...

Neither one of them thought the auction would be a success. But Layla finds it hard to keep her hands off the cowboy, and Jack falls for her sweet smile and wild sense of humor. True love should run smoothly, right? Except Layla's got a secret, and Jack's right in the line of fire. Does she risk everything for her Valentine cowboy or does she betray those closest to her?

This is a pen name for Jill Myles.

Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the 'naughty parts' of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own - stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

Really love the story. Really wanted an epilogue.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who doesn’t love a hunky cowboy with a heart of gold? This one is a dreamboat and such a flirt!
Clare hit it out of the park with the sweet and total crush, Jack. I just love this guy! And to think his perfect match is a nerdy virgin with a psycho mother? Yeah, I never would have thought it!
But somehow this author made it work and work well. Their personalities meshed beautifully together and balanced off each other just right. Their sweet flirting was adorable.
Maybe that is what bugged me about this one. It took forever for them to finally connect and seal the deal. Heck, I was frustrated with them! LOL! This virgin story had a great build-up but it took an act of congress to move things along. I also really wanted an epilogue. I miss that in many stories!
The author added several trials to hurdle over and they did so wonderfully with the sense of loving care evident throughout. Great connections with others and a wonderful supporting cast that is enjoyable and fun.
Overall, a delightful story with steamy buildup, delicious descriptions that will wind you up, and a HEA that is so worth it all! Plus, I just love her covers! I hope there are more books to come in the series! I can't wait for the next one!
Layla and Jack were a cute couple thrown together by the auction, which was perfect as they had caught each other’s eye in the past and may never have acted on the attraction otherwise. Jack coaxing Layla into dates and more was sweet and downright hot!
Jack Watson was different from his older brothers. Where Hank and Caleb were a bit baffled by the opposite sex, Jack had no problem with women. He loved women and wasn’t shy at all around them. Jack knew his appeal and was confident without being a conceited ass, and I loved him for it!
Layla on the other hand wasn’t as confident, and as most women do, she had some insecurities not realizing just how sexy was. I did like that she was okay with being the smart, nerdy girl. I think she was more unique than nerdy, but this is coming from a nerdy bookworm, so what do I know? Lol! I blamed most of Layla’s insecurities on her mother. Hated the mom! She was a narcissist through and through! Didn’t care about embarrassing Layla or taking advantage of her as long as she came out ahead. I was glad Layla stood up to her and didn’t let her manipulate her.
Loved Oscar the little skittish Weiner dog and Sterling the cat. An adorable animal with personality always hits me right in the heart!
I’ve been loving Jessica Clare’s Wyoming Cowboy series! Hot and sweet, and I’m such a sucker for a sexy cowboy! This is book six in the series, but as all the books in the series it would work as a standalone fine.
3.5 stars -- It has been a while since I've read a small town contemporary, and this gave me the cozy vibes I was looking for! I personally really loved that this was kind of slow burn-y and that the conflict was focused on the heroine overcoming the confidence issues her narcissistic mother had imparted to her. I think for some people, this will be perceived as the heroine being wishy-washy... to me, this felt like an accurate reflection of a person's journey to grow from a habit they are trying to break. All in all, this was really sweet & fun while still being pretty spicy when called for
It’s been absolute ages since I have read a Jessica Clare book, but I saw this one and thought why not? It’s been a long time since I’ve read a cowboy book and I found that I enjoyed Clare’s easy and fun writing style. She cracks a lot of jokes, making the characters easy to enjoy. However, I do sometimes think that the humor gets a little childish in some places, making me wonder if other adults actually think this is funny. But I guess humor is difficult to write when everyone is so different.
My favorite thing about this book is the hero, Jack. He was sexy, funny, and charming all at the same time. Layla took me a bit more to warm up to but I also think that’s due to her shy personality.
This is the sixth book in the Wyoming cowboy series and although I haven’t read any of the other books in this series, I found that I could easily get into this one. Despite some minor blips, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it for a fun and easy read. I might make it a habit to return back to this series whenever I want to read about a sexy cowboy again!
“Just because you had family, it doesn’t mean they’d have your best interest at heart. Maybe the family you made for yourself could be just as good if not better than the ones genetics gave to you.”
This book surprised me. This one had a message that was more than romance and it spoke depths to me. I loved Jake! Give me a dirty talking, patient Cowboy anyday! I loved how he helped Layla see the narcissism that exuded from her mother and gave her the strength to stand up to her. I loved how patient and the way her handled her virginity. I love that this story had the perfect pace and zero drama for dramas sake. Just a real feel good love story.
Before reading this series, I would have argued cowboy romance isn't my thing. Jessica Clare has proven me wrong, since I can't seem to get enough of these Wyoming cowboys and the accomplished, career driven women who love them. It only gets 3 stars because of the insta-love elements - could have used more development - and a plot twist at the end where the heroine's actions led me like her character less. Still a solid, fun romance. Highly recommend this entire series.
The last couple of books in the series followed the Watson men. Siblings who temporary left Alaska to help an uncle with his ranch in Wyoming but they decided to stay when one brother felt in love. Now Jack Watson is the only single sibling left. He's a people person, a ladies' man, the complete opposite of the lady who bidded on him at the bachelor auction. As a request for his sister-in-law and for a good cause, Jack accepted to participate so he can offer a day of labor for the lucky winner.
Layla Schmidt is a dorky accountant who have a complex relationship with her narcissist mother. She's convinced that she's not Jack's type because of his pretty boy look and she's a nerd. But the easygoing charmer find her funny and he'll used any excuse to get to know her better, even sharing custody of an OCD Dachshund.
I had a great time with Jack and Layla and their natural chemistry. The text-flirting and the dog parenting made for a charming romance. The heroine's mother was a total B but I'm glad Layla could held her own when needed.
There's just one problem for me with this book; it reminds me that tax return time is coming soon again😝😉.
The Bachelor Cowboy (The Wyoming Cowboy #6) by Jessica Clare has a sweet feel to this story. We have the nerdy gal who is a little insecure and has to contend with a very icky mom. We also have the hunky cowboy who is comfortable in his own skin, but not pigheaded about it.
These two somehow come together through an auction and let the games begin. Things heat up and in the end, no one gets burned.
The Bachelor Cowboy by Jessica Clare is an absolute delightful love story. Jack Watson gets guilted into volunteering for a Bachelor Auction by his sister-in-law, but knows it’s for charity and will do his part. Layla Schmidt has also been bamboozled by her girlfriends to attend the auction so that she could bid on a man and jumpstart her dating life. The whole auction was hilarious and had me laughing out loud because it was so cute. It also set up a wonderful cute meet for Jack and Layla and then the fun began.
I liked the fact that the author brought together an insecure young woman who is a little on the nerdy side but has a great sense of humor and wit, with a good-looking cowboy who is looking for something more than a good time. You wouldn’t think they would mesh but they absolutely did. No games were played and they moved at just the right pace for both of them to get use to one another and not scare the other away. The added conflict of her narcissistic mother Janet playing a thorn in their relationship was a game changer for both Jack and Layla. It resolved with some tough love was a defining moment for Layla to confront her mother and stand her ground. I had the best time reading this story because it was loaded with charm, wit, humor and sexiness. Jack is so swoon-worthy and was so honest and up front with Layla. Loved, loved, loved that about this man.
I hope this isn’t the end for The Wyoming Cowboy series because I feel she is just hitting her stride. The Bachelor Cowboy story has small town charm, likable and relatable characters and a big dose of romance for a wonderful happily ever after.
Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I like the small town characters in the Wyoming Cowboy series.   We didn't get too many updates on characters / couples from other books.  We did see the Jack's brothers and their women briefly.  Thankfully, we did not see Greg, unless he was the unnamed realtor. I read these books mostly out of order and I think any of them could be read as standalone.
Jack was not at all like I expected.  He is the last of the three brothers from Alaska to be single.  Since they are all staying in Wyoming, he has decided he will also.  He has plans to buy his own land and make his own ranch someday.   What happens when he starts looking for land is completely predictable.
Layla is a great character; I could really connect to her. She has insecurity over a few extra pounds and an accounting degree.  I love her sense of humor though,  and she is quite brave in many ways.  It's just rough to see her letting her mother drag her down.  Cora was a nice supporting role to give her more friends.
The romance is a little fast. Jack has always kind of liked her and falls really fast.  Layla is naturally skeptical of a really hot guy being interested in her.  He does work hard to make it clear he wants to date her.  When they hit their big "problem,"  I was quite impressed with how they both handled it.  They were honest with each other and the solution they made was a great one.
Ugh, Layla had the worst mum! I really have to start with that, the worst mum!
Layla bids on a bachelor during a bachelor caution, because she knows her friends need the money for her charity. Oh and the bachelor is beyond dreamy. Even if she would want a second date that is real she knows she wont stand a chance. She is nerdy, a virgin, and has a horrible mum. Awww, poor Layla, she was so great! And I wanted others to see that too. Her horrible mother really brought her self esteem down.
Jack is just doing it for charity. He is sweet, and what more do I need to say. He is sweet! He falls for her, they have more dates, and live happily ever after.
There is some drama concerning her mother (that horrible person!) I wanted Layla to cut her off, and will she? You have to listen and see.
I liked this one. Clare writes wonderful and sweet cowboy stories. Happiness, a tad bit of drama and great people.
I have listened to Abby before and I enjoy her narrations. She does them well, and she is great with cowboy stories.
The virgin trope is one of my least favourite tropes, and it was really, really emphasised here. Their dialogues, FMC's thoughts and the smut almost always was all about the virginity and/or insecurity of the FMC. It was at times exhausting to read the FMC's inner monologues. The plot with the mother and the dog was fun though!
This would have been a 4 star read had Layla's mother not been included as a character. I honestly hated her with a passion. She was absolutely infuriating and then to make matters worse, Layla kept letting her get away with it. Eventually she grows a backbone, but even then she took her mom's side for a while because 'it's her mom and the only family she has left.' Wrong is wrong, regardless of who is doing the wrong. At least Layla comes to her senses and sees what a lost cause her mother is and does the right thing. But it took the whole book to come to that point and by then, I'd had enough of her mom and Layla's lack of backbone. But I guess every good book needs a villain and Ms. Clare definitely knew how to write a villain.
Layla was the shy, cross-stitching accountant, or the town 'geek' as she was known. I related to Layla a lot and loved her style and humor. Outside of how she handles her mom, I definitely think she was one of the better female leads in the series.
Then there's Jack...he was definitely a surprise. I expected the charming and good-looking cowboy to be resistant to love and any sort of relationship. But he was the exact opposite. He liked Layla the first time he met her and he just knew she was the one. He was patient, kind, loyal and always made sure to tell Layla how wonderful and beautiful she was, despite her mother's grumblings to the contrary. He was the perfect romance book hero.
This book is a bit of insta-love, although they don't say those three words until the end. But it wasn't the annoying kind of insta-love where everything is hearts and rainbows for most of the book. There isn't much angst or drama outside of Layla and her mom and the little angst there is only lasts briefly. I'm okay with that since I wanted something light-hearted.
A little insta love, a bit immature, with spicy scenes that sometimes make you laugh uncomfortably, and plenty of over the top cheese, yet somehow exactly what I needed while the world feels like a dumpster fire. Layla’s mom is truly awful, one of my most hated characters ever, but bless Jack and all his cinnamon roll sweetness mixed with a hint of dirty talk. At just under 300 pages, it’s quick, lighthearted, and might be exactly what you need right now too.
This book wasn’t my favorite of the series. This story revolved around a cowboy named Jack Watson. He doesn’t want anything to do with the dating scene of Painted Barrel, Wyoming. His sister-in-law guilt trips him into joining a bachelor auction for charity. Jack just can’t say NO.
At the auction he ends up getting bid on by Layla Schmidt. She is an accountant who crochets 🧶 and does cross stitch. She considers herself a geek and she has a low impression of herself worthy of being with a guy like Jack. Her mother is something else she ends up telling her mother that she is bidding on someone that she had a crush on. Jack and Layla have instalove with one another. Her virginity kept being discussed throughout the story which was rather annoying. It wasn’t a spicy 🌶️ book for me and I felt like there wasn’t a connection between them. I didn’t feel like I was enjoying the story by the time it ended.
I finished this book late last night and absolutely adored Jack and Layla’s story.
Layla was such a relatable character. I loved her sense of humor and the fact that she was “weird” but not in a shy way, just a keep to herself/do what she loves kind of way. Jack, with his charming realness, was her perfect match. Their relationship was built over a short amount of time but was also a slow-burn that made for some great tension and banter.
This was a great addition to The Wyoming Cowboy series that has quickly become a favorite of mine!!
Thank you Berkley Romance for the free copy!
4.5
I loved this! It was so fricken cute and funny. Like I laughed out loud multiple times.
Jack is an incorrigible flirt and I couldn’t get enough. If you’ve read The Fake Out by Stephanie Archer, Jack is just a cowboy version of Rory. And he’s a catch, just ask him. 😂. Adding even more levity to the mix is a hilarious, elderly woman named Cora who they meet at the bachelor auction.
Layla is an accountant who loves gaming and cross-stitch. They’re definitely opposites but complement each other well. And it sounds like options in Painted Barrel are pretty slim, so it’s a good thing they do. One thing that isn’t working so well is Layla’s toxic mother who threatens to jeopardize the developing relationship with Jack due to her antics. You will hate her. Thankfully, we do see Layla stand up to her mother by the end.
This is definitely an insta-love book, so if that isn’t your thing, I’d steer clear. I ate it up! Jack is down bad and he isn’t too proud to admit it. Another trope that can be hit or miss, but that’s I thought was handled well is that Layla is a virgin. I never felt like it was fetishized by Jack and he is a consent king. Not only that, but he’s very communicative and supportive.
This is the 6th in a series, but worked well as a standalone and it’s under 300 pages, so if you’re looking for a cute, quick read, check it out!
Thanks for the free book Berkley!
Layla goes to a Valentines day bachelor auction as a favor to her friend who is trying to raise money for an animal shelter. She agreed to bet on Jack if no one else does. She ends up winning a date with him. Little does she know, Jack has been interested in her for a while.
This book was a very cute, spicy, Hallmarky read. It felt like a warm hug. It was cheesy in a way that I really liked. I definitely want to go back and read the other books in the series. This book 100% does standalone.
I really liked the romance but I took off 2 stars for the horrible mother who ruined the book for me. She was always causing trouble, insulting her daughter, doing awful things. I read romance to relax not deal with fictional family drama.
I did like how the heroine had hobbies and did crochet.
I will go back and read the earlier books in the series as I read this book first.
I thought this romance was really sweet and felt so cozy. I have not read any of the other books in this series, and I think I may have enjoyed this one a little bit more if I had. I would have been more invested in the town as a whole.
All in all, a fun read!
Peut-être plus 3,5 mais je l'ai préféré aux précédents donc ça vaut plus hein. J'ai eu très peur à un moment, que ça tourne au vilain malentendu pour rien, mais finalement non. Il y a DU DIALOGUE. Incroyable. Bref, c'était fun. À suivre, le cowboy de Noël annuel (héhéhé).
This is the third book I have read in the series. I have read the other two brothers books and loved them both and this one was even better than those books. This easily stands alone and this series is writtend about three single brothers from Alaska who move to yoming to help their uncle when he gets injured. They end up staying and finding love,
This is the baby brother, Jack's story and he is the hottie with the biggest flirting skills and all the ladies love him. That is except for Layla who is a nerdy accountant who is shy and while she notices Jack she thinks she is not his type and so ignores him.
That is until one day when she i roped into bididng and winning him in a date auction and thats when this book gets so fun. I loved how Jack and Layla are together. They were pure flirting fun. She does have the worst mother ever so get ready for her to annoy you as she annoys Layla. But I loved how Layla and Jack are and this was a really fun story.
Saddle up for a new cowboy romance out on January 26th! Jessica Clare’s newest book, The Bachelor Cowboy, shows just what happens when you buy a date with a cowboy.
Did I realize that this was the 6th book in a series? Nope! Am I now going to go and read the rest of the books in this series? Yep! Even though I unintentionally started reading this series backwards, this book definitely works as a standalone novel. While I would've liked to have more background information on some of the side characters (which I probably would've had if I had read the books in order), I didn’t feel too out of the loop or confused while reading this book.
It was funny, steamy, and if you love a “cowboy falls for nerdy girl” then you’ll love this book! Layla is a classic nerdy gal who doesn’t really care what people think of her and Jack is your stereotypical cowboy (complete with a cowboy hat and big belt buckle). However, the two of them are such lovable characters! Throw in a meddling old lady, a spotlight-stealing mother, and a dachshund puppy who wants to be carried around everywhere, this novel just screams cute rom-com!
While there wasn’t anything super profound or moving, I still had such a fun time reading this and I was hooked from the first chapter! If you’re looking for a bingeable and quick romance that's pretty linear, then this is a great choice!
Review:
Jack Watson is the youngest of the Watson brothers and the third to find his love in the latest book of The Wyoming Cowboy series. When Jack and his brothers moved from Alaska to help their uncle on the farm for the summer, none of them thought they would stay longer than calving season. But now that his older brothers have settled down and don’t plan on moving back to Alaska, Jack needs to figure out his own life in Painted Barrel. Before this though, he needs to help his sister-in-law, Becca, with the charity auction on Valentine’s Day. The auction is to help raise money for the local animal shelter and with Becca being part of the committee, Jack has no choice but to help her out.
Layla is the local accountant, she’s geeky, nerdy, loves games and crafts, and prefers weekends to herself. She is done trying to find a boyfriend and getting set up with blind dates by her mom. Layla is enjoying her life at Painted Barrel going out with her friends, her hobbies and taking care of her clients taxes, but when her friend Becca asks for help with the charity event, Layla can’t believe Becca wants her to bid on handsome Jack Watson. Not knowing what to expect, Layla takes her crochet to pass the time.
Once at the auction, things aren’t going so well. Not many people show up and they are short on funds. At Jack’s turn, bids aren’t enough, and when Layla’s mom shows up bidding on him, Layla steps up and bids the amount needed to reach the goal. Jack is amazed and Layla surprised by what she just did. Now, Jack has an official date with Layla, exactly like he wanted.
I have to confess this is my favorite book of the Watson brothers. Jack’s chemistry with Layla is so cute! Layla is such a relatable character with girls nowadays that like sci-fi movies and games. She’s also happy the way she is and has friends that appreciate her friendship. Her relationship with her mom is very toxic, but she learns to confront her with the help of those that really care for Layla. I also loved that Layla liked feeling comfy with herself and what she wears, but knows when to be cute or sexy. Her dates with Jack were experiences every girl goes through when they’re nervous.
Jack is a good brother and person. He felt attracted to Layla even though she avoided him. He let her know he liked her for who she was and not for appearances. It is also interesting to see someone like Jack who looks like he can do it all, feel hesitant about taking big steps in life, such as starting his own cattle business. But it was nice that Layla believed in him and offered financial advice as an accountant because she knew he could do it, unlike her mom.
Fans of the series can also catch glimpses of previous characters and what they have been up to. My favorite part was definitely the auction. It was hilarious and quite fun to read, especially with Cora and her coin purse. This book has it all, it’s fun and a good read. There’s no better modern couple than Layla and Jack.
