Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
So… who’s the Bat Family? At first, you think about Bruce, Alfred, the Robins, Batgirl and Batwoman. If you think a little more you may add Catwoman, the Outsiders and maybe even Harley Quinn. However, there’s someone who will never ever be in the Bat Family no matter how much you stretch it: The Joker. Yet here he’s featured as the main character in almost a third of the book.
I was impressed by Becky Cloonan’s art, as well as Elizabeth Breitweiser’s colors. Alex Maleev’s colors were lovely too.
Christopher Priest and Neal Adams issue was awful. The art was bad and the story was very hard to grasp. Brian Michael Bendis is present as well, with a story as bad as most of his work. Kelly Jones’ art is terrible too. Peter J. Tomasi wrote two stories that particularly annoyed me.
I skipped the Robin stories, as I had already read them in the Robin 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular. However, that meant I’d reached the part I dread the most. I didn’t hate it as I thought I would. There’s Punchline’s origin story (or at least that’s what I think) which made me deeply despise her (which I think is a good thing). Then there’s Dan Mora illustrating an issue and reminding me I want to see him drawing Wonder Woman more often. There’s also a cool Sejić variant, an interesting Paul Dini story and a curious Tom Taylor one. Most of Catwoman’s stories were good and a breath of fresh air after all that Joker.
I gotta say, I'm bummed. I love Bat Fam But this collection was largely solo Batman, Joker, and Catwoman with what felt like cameos of the Robins, Batgirls, Batwoman, and Alfred.
I received this as a gift and my gut reaction inside was... "bummer, why did you pick this?". These buffet style books work better for one single character. Give me all Jason Todd or all Tim Drake, but rando one shots of all the Bat Family felt like going to the theater and leaving after only watching the trailers. The upside is the content creators are mostly A-Listers but theres not enough meat on the bone for me to ever reread this out side of the art.
A solid 3.5. Supposedly a book about the Bat family it is more about the main parts of that family in their own and providing more to their back story. Not well joined but some good stories nevertheless.
A truly mixed bag of short stories containing adventures of Batman, Alfred, Robin I (Dick), Robin II (Jason), Robin III (Tim), Robin IV (Damian), Joker, Catwoman, and others.
For every fun story, there was a dismal one. I'd say pick it up, and read the creators you like and skip the rest!
As with all anthologies, quality of stories and art varied, but one thing I cannot forgive is the fucking joker getting a section in a book that's supposed to be about the batfamily. What the actual fuck
triggers: violence, body horror, guns, murder, blood
quick review: A slightly mistitled graphic novel (GN) featuring a fun collection of Batman stories, with a few stand outs amongst an overall strong selection.
full review: Batman: 80 Years of the Bat Family is a collection of stories from different writers, most of which revolve around members of the Bat Family: Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Damien Wayne, Stephanie Brown, Jason Todd, Selina Kyle and... The Joker? Yes, that's right, about halfway through, around nine stories heavily focus on The Joker. Whilst the stories involving the Clown Prince of Crime are interesting, they do not fit in with the title of the GN, and seem out of place amongst the rest of the collection. If someone buys the book hoping to have 400 pages of Bat Fam content, they will leave disappointed with the amount of stories which don't include any of them. It was also disappointing to not see the first appearances of each member of the Bat Fam which is a huge missed opportunity for a GN celebrating the characters. However, it's a fun over read and, had it been named something more appropriate, I would have considered rating it slighter higher, but for the fact that it doesn't meet the expectation of the title, and that some stories are more forgettable than others, it falls below the 5 star / A mark.
