Abducted and hidden away deep in the Rocky Mountains, Susan Bell is frantic to escape her murderous captor.
Freshman Special Agent Burke Cameron is straight laced, traditionally minded, and comes with a hefty set of old-fashioned values. Burke doesn’t know what to do with the free spirited, progressive woman he’s falling for. He and Susan don’t want any of the same things and he knows he should move on, but he can’t seem to resist her.
Burke and Susan's world views are polar opposites and a lasting future together is impossible to imagine. But when a group of six women, including Susan, goes missing in the Colorado Rockies, their differences fall away, and all that matters to Burke is finding her. He enlists the help of his friend, Agent Kendra Dean and her FBI-K9 partner, Annie. As soon as they are on the trail, they realize they’re not simply searching for lost women—they are tracking a killer. They discover one body after another. Desperate to rescue Susan, Burke prays that the next body they find isn't hers.
If you like thrilling suspense, then you'll love Body Count.

Body Count is another page-turner story that I had to read in one sitting. I enjoyed to go back and read more about Susan and Burke because I loved them in the first book and they definitely needed more time to grow their relationship and feelings. Somehow, the author manages to surprise me every time I try a new book by her. She writes turning points that I personally haven’t read much before and maybe it’s because I lived sheltered in big cities around the world and, as crazy as it sounds, it always gave me a fake safety sensation but it’s quite interesting to see how everything develops in this story and how, even after reading the books, I go back and think about those situations, what would I do and how would I react to them. Susan is a smart and strong independent woman and she amazed me with her abilities to keep herself in check during everything she went through but also for her compassion at the end, something that many people would not even think about giving a second of their thoughts. Burke is the perfect hero in every possible way and together they are the perfect couple to a happily ever after story.
Great read Susan and Burke met over one kidnaping and bonded over second
Susan decided to get over the attempted kidnapping by going on a woman’s retreat. She was going to bond with successful women while learning more about how to grow her business. Timing is terrible though she and Burke were getting very close. But Burke is slower than she is, more careful, being FBI, and they are getting to know each other. Then the unthinkable happens she is kidnapped again and the search is on. But the odds aren’t great there are already bodies left behind. Women she was just getting to know.
Body Count Book 2 in the FBI-K9 Series is another can’t put down page burner by Jodi Burnett. Like all the best thriller authors today, Jodi combines nonstop action with an element of romance. As a rule romance plays second fiddle to the action, but Jodi tells her stories in such a manner that one seems inextricable from the other. Although you can read these books in any order and enjoy the read, to get the most enjoyment out of them we should read them in the order Jodi wrote them, because the stories build upon the stories that went before them. In fact, if you haven’t already read Jodi’s Flint River Series. I recommend reading that series before embarking on the FBI-K9 Series.
Body Count opens with the developing love relationship between FBI Agent Cameron Burke and Susan Bell. They met during the Avenging Adam serial killer investigation after she fought off the killer’s attempt to kidnap her in a supermarket parking lot. Their burgeoning romance was on rocky ground because they were opposite in what they felt important. Burke wasn’t sure where their relationship was headed when another agent shows an interest in Susan, but, before he could discuss that with her, she leaves for a ten-day business retreat in the mountains. There, while on a rafting excursion, a mountain man in search of a wife abducts her and five other women. Burke finds out that she’s missing when her mom calls him for help.
Burke turns to his friends in the K-9 division for help. As they searched for Susan, the dead bodies of the women pile up, one after another. In the end… nope, not telling you. Go read the book.
We meet Susan Bell and Burke Cameron on a first date. Burke introduces her to a couple of his FBI work mates and over a very nice dinner they get to know each other a bit. Burke and Susan appear to be drown towards each other but they keep seeing differences between their personalities. Susan goes to a leadership course for female entrepreneurs and during this course, a small group of women go white water rafting. Susan has the feeling of being watched which makes her nervous. Then women start dying . Jerrod is looking for a wife and he is following this group towards that very end. After a while, there are only 2 women left and Jarrod starts taking them to his farm. Meanwhile, the FBI is called in because the women have gone missing under mysterious circumstances. Burke teams up in the hunt for them. With four of the women dead, the searchers are finding bodies and the pressure is on to find the two that are left The hunt is relentless, difficult and full of suspense. We follow that hunt from Burke's point of view and the journey with Jerrod from Susan's perspective. It is a thrilling story with lots of misdirection and angst. Nicely written story keeps the reader interested right up to the very end. Never a dull moment.
Susan Bell attends a retreat in the Rocky Mountains that is being held for a group of various women who own their own businesses. Recently, she met FBI Special Agent Burke Cameron and while they are attracted to each other, they have absolutely nothing in common. Five of the women at the retreat had signed up for an overnight camping trip. The next day the five women and their guide do not return when they are supposed to. Agent Cameron, concerned for Susan, goes to check it out. They have disappeared and then the remains of a body is found. As the body count rises, they realize they are dealing with a serial killer. As Agent Cameron enlists the aid of FBI agent Kendra and her K-9 partner Annie, they wonder if they can find Susan before it is too late. Lots of twists, turns and actions make this a great story.
I enjoyed the second book in this series. Jodi has a writing style that draws you in from the get go. The characters are interesting and likeable, and the addition of the canines to the story line is a plus. It was a thrilling read and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. Can't wait for book 3 in the series to come out!
There is a Prologue that has the 5 ladies out on the white water rafting and camping part, in the Rocky Mountains part of the Women’s Entrepreneurs Strength Building Conference. Not everyone had to go on this. 5 women signed up to go but before the start the leader of the rafting, told them the other leader/helped had been hurt and couldn’t come, Nora, the leader told them the could cancel it with only one person to help with the white water rafting, the campingOver after they had gone about half Of the way then confine on rafting to where they would be picked up. All five decided to go. They all made the first part of the rafting, the tied their raft up, and hiked to where they would spend the night. They cooked supper talked about many things. Susan started to say she had the feeling they were being followed, but no one else said anything so neither did she. When the got up Prue had coffee going. As the other ladies came out it the tents, they all asked where Nora went after she started the coffee. Prue said, Nora wasn’t around so I started the coffee. They got their supplies for breakfast down from where they tied them in trees to keep bears away. They ate their breakfast and then Susan said let’s walk down to the raft. Everyone wanted to go. The raft was not where they tied it but was caught on some branches a little farther down and was upside down. When they got to it a foot was sticking out. It was Nora’s and she was dead. Two Months Prior
Burke & Susan were going on a first date but 2 of his FBI friends said they had something to celebrate so they went to the restaurant they wanted to go to. His friends Rick & Kendra were already there. They made the announcement fairly quickly. They announced their engagement.the date went well even though Burke thought when a married woman had a baby she should quit work and he thought that Susan wanting to quit the job de had to start a nutritionist blog and job online to make a living. They decided to make a date for the next weekend. Before the week was over Kendra asked Susan to come to where they did the K-9 Training, she thought it was great, she met Annie who was her replacement when Carter lost his leg in the line of duty. While there she met another FBI K9 handler, Clay and he had two dogs Ranger and Gunner. Clay also said he might like to see her again and Susan didn’t say no. Kendra said after he left, but you are dating Burke. Susan said it was a double date and nothing was said about being inclusive. Now the back and forth who picks the place for a date between Susan & Burke. 1st Burke took her to a gun range even though she had told him she didn’t’t like guns. For Susan’s turn she took Him to an upscale vegan restaurant even though neither were vegan, but Susan said she liked their food a lot. Burke didn’t really like it at all. All of their dates seem to go like that up to the time she was going to be gone for 10 days. That night they ate at Kendra’s house And it was good and the evening was pleasant. As they were about to leaqve Burke and Rick got called in for drug trading and human tracking at the border. When Burke said I’ll see you when I get back and Susan said I leave for my 10 day Women’s Entrepreneur Building Conference. It had snuck up on him. So Kendra would take her home. They talked for a long time and Susan didn’t understand why they had not moved to the next stage of the dating relationship. Kendra was also surprised. Kendra did ask if Clay had called and she said yes, but I seeing someone. He said just let me know if it doesn’t work out.
Now we are back at the camp site where they found Nora dead in the overturned raft. They worked to get Nora wrapped up. But now They were on their own. From now forward different ladies are dying at a pretty fast rate. They had no weapons, they only had their brains but they were all afraid. The raft had been made useless so all they could do was hike. It seemed like it went on forever. Then the ones that had not been killed by a giant of a man and that to do more and more hiking seemingly all uphill. There was really no way of escape. On the afternoon that that should have been back hours earlier they called the FBI. So now Kendra, Rick, Burke & Clay along with Annie, Ranger and Gunner we’re going to head up to where they left from. So both parties are hiking, but the one held captive are more tire, have had less food and water. But not all the folks on the FBI team are trained for this. You REALLY MUST READ this book to fill in the gaps of which women and how they were killed and to find out what the endgame was for the killer and the 2 girls he has left. And to read what the K9 handlers go through and even more what the dogs do. This was an amazing read.

4.75 Stars. With a title of “Body Count” you know the plot is going to revolve around death. This thrilling book is more than just doom and gloom. It’s a captivating romantic suspense that’s certainly isn’t typical. Special Agent Burke Cameron and entrepreneur Susan Bell met during a serial killer case in the first book in this enthralling series. On paper these two appear to be mismatched couple. Burke describes Susan as an irresponsible, impulsive liberal that drives a Prius, eats seeds, and is for gun control. While Susan views Burke as a “Boy Scout” that grew up to be a straight and narrow FBI agent that carries a SIG P320. His idea of a first date is a trip to the Shooting Range and hers is dinner at a vegan restaurant. All their differences go out the window when Susan and a group of conference friends go missing from a overnight rafting trip in the Colorado Rockies. Burke enlist his fellow FBI colleagues (Kendra, Rick, Clay, Annie, and Ranger)and their K9s to head the search and rescue. Finding one dead body after another leaves little hope of finding Susan alive. Burke knows Susan is strong, a fighter, and smart, which gives him faith that she is still alive. Susan’s internal strength, keen mind, and the bond she shares with Burke makes her determined not to give up, as she knows Burke will stop at nothing to rescue her. This story has one of the most complex and demented villains. Yet this mystery man has an enduring side that pulls at Susan’s heart, which leaves her confused and conflicted. I alway like it when an author includes characters from the previous book(s). As a reader I was thrilled to get an update on Rick and Kendra, learn more about Clay, and to see the newest FBI K9, Annie, in action. Dogs truly are amazing. Also the ground work is laid for the next FBI-K9 book involving human trafficking and illegal guns.

A second terrific book in this series by Ms. Burnett. Susan Bell barely escaped certain death at the hands of a serial killer in the first book. She decides that it is time to go after the life and career that she wants. Attracted to F.B.I. Agent Burke Cameron was not in her plans…they seem so different, but will spending time together bring them closer together or tear them apart? The book begins with Susan and a group of women on a woman’s empowerment retreat, but when things go deadly wrong, will she be strong enough to survive again? Burke, along with F.B.I. Agents Rick Sanchez, Kendra Dean and her K9 partner Annie join the search for the missing women. As time runs out and the body count rises, will they find Susan alive? Loved the strong characters, the suspenseful story and updates on Rick and Kendra from the first book. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author. I always enjoy K9 stories and I wanted to give this series another chance to see how things go forward. The characters from the first book also played a role in this story. They are the dog handler agents. This was a romance between another agent and a woman who got away from the killer in the last case.
The villains in this series are definitely cut from the male Christian is the ruler cloth. This one didn't have the religious crazy of the first book though. Still women are merely breeders and slaves to service them.
I would also say that while the dogs do actual work we don't get much detail on their training or work beyond vague description and a few commands used.
Body Count is another wonderful read by Jodi Burnett! It incorporates her flair for combining mystery, adventure, suspense and romance into a story that is very difficult to put down, and makes the reader hungry for the next sequel! I recommend this book highly for anyone who enjoys a fantastic read. I always enjoy reading Ms. Burnett's works.
I filled to each his own on this series but I’m out. A horrible love romance in a horrible plot. The wannabe perfect man trying to change the wonderful girl. Just way too much for me. I’m done with this author.
Jodi’s second in the K-9 thriller series is another page turner. Intense tracking scene of the survivalist killer was well written. Great character development. Thoroughly enjoyed this book!
There are several things I look for in an author that keep me interested in her further publications. One, and this may seem trivial to others but I find very distracting when it is absent, is technical command of the language. Does she use words correctly, are there grammatical and spelling errors, are her sentences clear or are they convoluted. Ms Burnett’s writing is almost impeccable. (I am always surprised at the number of published books I find that fail at this minimal criterion and wonder why copy editors for these books don’t catch these errors.)
Second, are the plots believable and original. Sadly, Ms Burnett’s first two books in this series are disappointing. (1) Both killers are deranged mad men whose lives have been ruined by the teachings of their even more deranged fathers. (2) Both primary victims, who have suffered psychological abuse from their own families, suddenly find that these families kiss and make up near the end of each book and all is forgiven Unlikely.
Third, do the various elements of the book present a cohesive whole. Ms Burnett’s two books seem confused. Are these Romance novels with lots of sex, both anticipatory and actual, or mystery/action books, or stories about search and rescue dogs, their care, training, and relationships with their handlers? Ms Burnett seems to want all of these - and while she may garner some one-time (or two-time readers, she will not get a readership base like the great authors have, like John Sandford. See the under-appreciated DL Keur for someone who plots are perfect, IMO.
While I love Ms Burnett’s considerable skill at writing action sequences, and the (too) brief bits about care and training of SAR dogs, I wish her plots were more believable. If I wanted a book with steamy sex scenes, I would not look here and, though I love good female porn, it’s definitely too much for these books.

This is the first book by Jodi Burnett I have experienced and really enjoyed it. The story moves forward at a good pace and has an interesting plot that wraps nicely around the budding romance between the two main characters, Susan and Burke. There are also Kendra, Rick, Clay and their FBI K9 companions Annie and Ranger, who apart from Annie featured in the first book; however this novel can be read as standalone.
You can expect a good amount of suspense and action and the human and canine interaction is natural and flows well. The characters are well rounded and have intelligent and insightful conversations. At first I was a little concerned that the focus would be mainly on canine scenes and overpower the crime plot, but was pleased to find that the balance was just right.
I won’t recap the story line here, since the book synopsis takes care of that and I don’t want to risk spoilers, just to say that overall I enjoyed the novel and anyone who loves a thrilling crime book, with dogs added should give it a go.
This audio book is narrated by Kimberly Austin. She has a pleasant voice and speaks as a good tempo with concise and clear diction. While the individual characters don’t have very distinguishable accents (voices), it isn’t necessary, as the way the story is written makes it clear who is talking.
I received this book in audio book format from the author and am leaving this review of my own volition.
I would like to start out that I began this book because I read another book by this author that was absolutely wonderful, so this doesn't necessarily reflect on the author. However, I could only get through the first 6 chapters of this book because I found the main male character obnoxious. He's an avowed "man works and woman stays home with the kids" man, is against any kind of gun laws or restrictions, doesn't believe woman with families can have kids and still maintain a career, and takes the woman he's dating (who has specified she's for gun restrictions) to a gun range on their first date to show her "who he really is" and to change her mind about guns. The sentence that made me unable to continue reading was "How was it possible that he was falling in love with an irresponsible, impulsive liberal?" As an irresponsible impulsive liberal myself, I just couldn't stand reading about this macho Maga-type man any longer. Now I admit, I did page quickly through to the end and he did eventually change his mind to where he admits his now fiance can handle running her own business and being a mom as well, but honestly, I felt such revulsion reading about his thoughts that I just couldn't continue. I don't know if his beliefs reflect the author's, as authors can obviously write about many different types of characters, but this book really put me off wanting to continue.
I have become a fan of this author after receiving the ARC of the first book in this series and then deciding to go back and read her other books from the prior series. Luckily they are on KU! Although you don’t need to read the books in order to enjoy this one, you may want to!! This is the story of Susan Bell, who has recently started dating FBI Agent Burke Cameron, who she met when she was attacked by a serial killer. Although there is an attraction, Susan and Burke are very different people and as they start dating it is highlighted in activities they chose to share with each other. One thing this author does really well and shows how people develop in a relationship. Susan goes to a women’s business retreat in the Rocky Mountains and disappears with the other women she was traveling with. This is where the book goes on a journey I didn’t expect and I was hooked. With her disappearance, Burke asks his colleagues for help using their K-9 partners. The story has a lot of action and adventure that kept me reading! A great story with fantastic characters that I really enjoyed.
What a great suspenseful story. A bit different from the way the first story went with a crazy religious fanatic.
FMC was Susan from the first book. She was almost a victim of the previous serial killer. Burke is a part of the FBI and served on that case. Where these two had an instant connection.
I found their relationship interesting. It def not a fluffy romance. These 2 are completely opposite on the very fundamental things. He is more traditional and conservative and she is more on the liberal free thinking. It was refreshing to have a story line that actually had real life things to work through.
The Danger really happens when Susan is on a woman’s nature retreat with other business minded individuals. As her rafting group discovers their guide dead, they take it as something must have happened naturally, but when another comes up dead panic sets in.
As her group is lost in the mountains running from who ever is trying to kill them, Burke is on it. He enlists the help of Kendra with her newest service dog along side Ranger.
I love the whole service dog aspect. I loved the suspense and trying to figure out what was happening. This is def more suspense with a side of romance.
Another great story that draws you in right away. Jodi Burnett is auickly climbing my favorite authors list. Susan had finally made her big decision to quit her job & pursue her dream of running her own business. She had signed up for a convention for small business. It was a rafting trip. Burke was nervous about not being able to communicate with Susan for the 10 days but kept it to himself. The trip started out okay but soon took a turn for the worst. Susan and her team members were so scared when their guide & another team member were found dead. They decided to try to find help so they struck off. As Susan friends were picked off one by one they were devastated . Susan & Kiara were the last ones left when they learned what was stalking them. Her will and fight to survive this dangerous situation will keep you on edge. A great series that will draw you in.
This was an intense, complex, and suspenseful story that you won't want to miss. There were some deeply emotional and terrifying moments for some of the characters, but in the end, Burke and Susan seem to be working together to move forward with their lives. This book starts off in the present time, then quickly shifts to the past that leads up to the present. I'm not sure why it was done like this, but it was a bit confusing, as well as difficult to keep up with the new characters. I understand trying to entice the readers in the beginning, however it would have been a lot easier to understand if it had been written from the past to present time line. JMO! I would definitely recommend this book, series, and author.
This book is the first that I have read by Jodi Burnett. The story line is given to us with the plot summary, so I won’t refer to that, but tell you what I found on reading the book. After the first few pages I was in the “what’s going to happen next?” zone…which means that I had to keep on reading until I found out the answer. And that was in the early hours of the morning! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, with both human and canine interest, which was easy to read and kept the tension going right until the end. I like Jodi’s style with the mix of thriller and romance and look forward to reading her other books. I would definitely recommend.
I read this book non stop. It´s full of action and as you read the story is just want to finish to understand what happened, why and who did it. The writer describes the places so well that you can almost feel the leaves of the trees, the dogs sniffing and looking for trails, the dampness, the fear, I just loved it! The criminal has a different mind set as his upbringing is nothing like one in our days, which may explain his behaviour but not his actions. A very entertaining book. I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Body Count (FBI-K9 #2), my third read from author Jodi Burnett. December seemed to be my month for new authors and January looks to continue the trend. So good I went right out and got this book. Another excellent read, enjoyable and captivating in its detail and development, this time it's one of their own. I'm voluntarily reviewing it because every good books need reviews. I look forward to more from this author and in this series, in fact, I'm going out and get Concealed Cargo: Children for Sale (FBI-K9 #3) next. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
This book was heart stopping and full of surprises. The murderer was a real shocker! I was absolutely stunned! You totally exceeded yourself with this book. You just keep getting better and better! I cannot wait to read your next book! It is evident that you have done a great deal of research about this subject. Your books are beyond compare. Please keep up the wonderful writing. I look forward to reading all of your books! God bless you in your future books I recommend your books to everyone.
Once again I've managed to read a book that turned out to be in the middle of a series. The continuing factor seems to be the K-9 handler of the FBI, but this story focused on the new girlfriend of one of the FBI handler's coworkers. It had a couple of viewpoint/voices(the taken and the searcher) to move the plot along. A budding romance is interrupted when the woman goes on a retreat in the middle of nowhere and all the women in her group start getting killed off. The FBI friends set out in a desperated attempt to get her back. It was okay and held my attention but it wasn't riveting.
The only thing missing was Goldilocks and The three bears. Poppa bear, Momma Bear and Baby bear. For a book to grab my interest which is mystery and suspense is rare, this one did a 180 and skipping most of it because it had become so ridiculous....get a grip..Post Relationship Stress Disorder... This is 2020, we are living and dying in a pandemic this was like a bad Twilight Zone, only The Twilight Zone was never bad
What an amazing series! I get so caught in the exploits of these brave and heroic FBI agents and the loves they discover while fighting to keep the populace safe that I forget time! And the K9's, the totally unsung hero's of Law enforcement! Such remarkable characters and stories that I can barely finish one before purchasing another.
Like the first book in this series, this is a cozy, feet up romance wrapped around a story about a lunatic and a life and death drama. Not mind bending, but the search and rescue element only heightens my admiration for dogs. I like this kind of book as a break from more intense reading, and, since I don't go for pure romance or erotica, it's great that these books have a proper story - and heroic dogs!
6 women on a simple retreat turns into days of terror as the women are being killed, 4 flee for their lives and the suspense just builds as FBI and trackers frantically search for the missing women and try to find the killer. Definitely a keep you on the edge of your seat type of story that pulls you in on the very first page and doesn't let you go till the very last word. A great read - if you love mysteris and thrillers you're going to need to read this book, you're going to love it.
