"Kao’s first merry step in the university stumbled when the new bond of friendship unexpectedly threw him into the same gang as Pete’s, a rich, handsome guy who was his high school friend. It would’ve been fine if they’d been normal friends, but Pete had once targeted him! Even though Pete had broken his old habit of getting into fights from high school, their resentment towards each other never changed. Their friends had to go to the trouble to strengthen their relationship by pairing them up for a school assignment.
Until, one day, the walls between them had broken down. And Pete and Kao found that they got along better than they’d expected. But their newfound relationship was threatened to be ruined when Fongbeer, a BA student, had gotten in the way of their ‘friendship.’ It made Pete try to pick fights with Kao every day like before. What should a best friend (who wanted to be more than just a friend) like Kao do in this situation?"
While I’m travelling in Thailand, I was hoping to find a gay, Thai manga-style comic to review. In a stroke of luck, when I made my pilgrimage to Kinokuniya in Bangkok–I could write an entire review about the store in Siam Paragon, gorgeous, a huge selection of English language books, a fantastic manga section, including BL/yuri–I was thrilled to find their “No Boundaries” section of LGBTQ pics (although they were mostly books about gay men).
Blue Kiss I took to be a manga, solely because of the pretty anime boys on the cover. Once I confirmed that it was set in Thailand (check!) and by a Thai author (check!) I added it to my pile of books. Turns out it was a light novel, but I’m counting that as a win.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from a gay Thai story. I know as much about LGBTQ rights in Thailand as any westerner with access to Google, and from a few conversation with Thai people and immigrants from other countries, the sense I get is: fairly liberal populace, fairly conservative government. I understand Blue Kiss is part of the bigger Kiss Me Again series by Hideko_Sunshine and, to her credit, when I’m back in Canada I’m definitely going to see if I can find an English dub of the sequel TV show Dark Blue Kiss. I want to see how they continue the character’s stories.
Digo, no eran pareja.
Joder, él no traía ningún perfume :)
Thai BL (there's also a TV series). Quick, easy read with some typical tropes I like. I didn't see anything really problematic that I had expected from some reviews. It was a little sad they get they had to hide their relationship from most people because they were worried about their peace but hopefully that is changing. Exciting times for Thailand with the recent vote to legalize same sex marriage! ✔️Enemies to lovers ✔️Friend group ✔️Jealousy/miscommunication ✔️MC is gay and hasn't told anyone ✔️ML is straight but starts having feelings ✔️Angst ✔️🛏 is fade to black
There are a few translation errors but easy to figure out and not too jarring. I don’t mind translation errors if the overall story is good- and this was! There’s also another book called Dark Blue Kiss.
Quite well translated. Also I like that even if there is the token girl that causes problems, its more centered on them than on her. Sun and Mork... I'll never get enough of them. ;_; Hope Dark Blue will also get translated.
I have been dying to read this after watching the Thai series and all I can say is this novel was great! The details and facts we missed from the series are all in the novel and the extra scenes about Mork and Sun were amazing. Can’t wait to read the next one!!
4 stars for SunMork.. Their storyline is so interesting nd went through lots of interesting events.. The final special chaps abt Mork's bday r so cute too.. I luv jealous Sun so much
Is it good? Well, it's not Shakespeare, that's for sure. Also, the translation is a bit iffy in some places. But for me as a PeteKao fan, this was a must-read and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
There were things that I liked more in the book - their first time was really nicely done and it was more than just the small peek that we got in the drama (which I also loved, don't get me wrong) - but there were also things that I enjoyed more in the series, like the accidental kiss (which wasn't in the book) and everything else that happened after the fight in the bar, basically the whole second half of their story, and especially the scene where Kao agreed to be Pete's boyfriend! I’m never not going to grin like a loon watching Pete pounce and Kao squeak!
