~Her issues with her family and her need for money poured out of her mouth like water from a kettle's spout.~
~"I am your future self. You remember that idea you had for a time machine? Well, it worked..." "You look more like my dad."~
~We had come to believe that the falling rains were the reason the soil had started to kill most of what we tried to plant, the reason the village could not grow and the reason we could not leave.~
~Death walked in, taking a seat at the table as the kettle came to a boil. The woman silently wheeled herself over to the drain board to fetch another mug. As she moved, the light danced across fingers, each sporting a silver splint. "How many sugars?" she asked. Death held up two fingers.~
~Cleansing. That's what she calls it when she takes a sin away. The man she ate had beaten his wife for the three years of their marriage.~
~Let me tell you about my name. Mame Bougouma Diene, literally translates into Grampa doesn't want fish. And this is Dakar, who doesn't want fish? Or didn't. When you could still get any. My parents really pulled a number on me. Tradition, man...~
*Please note, I am a contributor to this short story collection.
Very interesting and eye-opening collection of stories from the African diaspora. As a white man, I'll be the first to admit that I'm woefully under-exposed to these kinds of stories and authors, and this has really opened my eyes to the fact that I need to move my to-read list to include more than just American and Western European influences.

All of the stories were interesting. Underworld is set in a future and had enough characters that using the Kindle notebook to keep track of who's who might be useful. The book gives a tasting of the writing from sixteen authors.
Tiah Marie Beautement, "Memento Mori", Omenana, August 30, 2018 ❝As soon as her head sank under the rough sea, she could hear the terrified cries of fishermen. The other soul collectors were occupied: a hurricane, a jellyfish sting, a tsunami, a suicide. There was never enough of them, but tradition stated that sailors and fishermen should never die alone. Tonight, the dark souls would have to wait. Battling the turbulent water, she reached the ten terrified humans trapped inside a flooded compartment. She was not permitted to save their lives, but amidst the chaos and panic, she could bring them calm and comfort.❞ https://omenana.com/2018/08/30/mement...
Mame Bougouma Diene, "Underworld 101", Omenana, April 6, 2017 ❝In a world of a hundred fifty billion people, you’d think the odds were higher of finding someone who cared for you. But it’s the exact opposite. The more people, the more selfish we get. [...] Upper middle classes play assassination games to stay ahead, at least us poor folk don’t, but then we’re busy fighting each other for food bank scraps so we don’t end up food ourselves.❞ https://omenana.com/2017/04/06/underw...
Nnamdi Anyadu, "The Encounter", Omenana, August 7, 2016 ❝I know the Sacred Seven like the end of my own caudal fin. Never shed a tear. Never perform dishonesty. Never travel to any of the other tribes without the chief’s blessing. Never swim to shore or contact a surfacer. Never wield your gift for destruction. Never take the life of a fellow sea creature. Beware the halls of Tada; never venture there. [...] Surfacers look so weird. They don’t have gills on their necks. They don’t have scales over their bodies. How do they even stay warm? They have arms in the lower parts of their bodies and they move with it. Four arms? What is a person doing with four arms? Ugh.❞ https://omenana.com/2016/08/07/the-en...
Sarah Norman, "Look At Me Now", Omenana, March 5, 2015 ❝She thought she had never felt so welcome in England as she did then, ... The living room was just exactly how she had imagined Europe would be before she came, all warm and golden-toned and safe with all the children tucked in their beds, and only on the streets if they were playing on their bikes till dinnertime. And if they did die, after lots of free medical care, they were buried with fluffy bunnies by weeping parents in green churchyards next to their dear old grannies.❞ https://omenana.com/2015/03/05/look-a...
