Throughout this collection of works, Schaubeck shares some of the many things she has learned over the course of her life. Wether it be the essence of family or the values of friendship, written in this anthology, Emily chooses to write about the things she did not understand until she truly was, Older.
Older is a lovely collection of poetry that I think works really well when you read as much of the work together, in one go, as you can. There’s a great flow to the work, both on a technical level and in content and theme, that makes the collection as a whole almost greater than the sum of its parts. Older feels like a deeply personal work and I think that comes across in a good way, inviting you into the inner workings of Schaubeck’s mind, laying bare an array of raw emotions that all add up to the gradual accumulation of wisdom as you age.
Not my favorite style of poetry (short, punchy lines that are straight to the point) but there were a few pieces I enjoyed and I’d love to see how this author matures with her poetry over the next few years.
