This book helps you understand the business of writing so you can turn your work into money. More than 40 articles, collected from the pages of Writer's Digest magazine, answer your business and financial questions about freelance writing, from researching new markets to making business contacts, setting pay rates and understanding copyright laws. It focuses on all varieties of writing, such as commercial copy, novel writing and magazine pieces.
Even though this book was written 20 years ago the majority of advice for making money as a freelance writer is still relevant. Please note: there is nothing about blogging, email marketing or writing online content (the book was published in 2007). I borrowed the book from a library while home in Australia and would have liked more time to re-read a lot of sections.
This comprehensive book is a series of essays from writing professionals and covers the business of writing (starting a writing business, keeping money rolling in, dealing with customers, copyright, getting clients, building client relationships); writing itself (copywriting, where to get ideas, pitching, direct mail, newsletters); and managing yourself (personal productivity, professional image and branding, staying motivated).
As a freelance copywriter, blogger and content writer and serious about my work, I found the book incredibly helpful. I ever see it in a second-hand bookstore I'll be buying it. It's definitely the type of book you can read and re-read and re-read and still find more.
