There’s no mystery a sharp mind like Mr. Poe’s can’t solve. He’s saved the soul of a dead warlock and taken down a murderous, knitting vampire. When he begins having visions of devastation around Haven, he’s prepared for the fight.
Unfortunately, Mr. Poe’s family still thinks he’s an ordinary black house cat, and they’ve become intent on ensuring he’s an indoor cat. Thanks to a magical collar, he can no longer leave the house.
When his visions of disaster strike, Mr. Poe must use his brilliant mind to solve the mystery—without ever leaving his favorite sunbeam.
Hi everyone! My name is Sara, and I write urban fantasy and paranormal novels as SM Reine. I collect swords, cat hair, and typewriters (which I do use for writing!). It's a good day when those three things have nothing to do with each other.
If you would like to know the instant my next book is available, you should enlist in my Army of Evil! We have a wicked cool secret handshake, but you'll have to sign up to learn it. ;) Check it out -- http://smarturl.it/armyofevil
How I came to the conclusion that Mr Poe the “magically endowed feline” proves once and for all that he is indeed the furry reincarnation of my super sexy Belgian boyfriend Hercule Poirot:
① He is beautifully pretentious, gloriously haughty, wonderfully full of himself, deliciously cranky, scrumptiously full of fish, and most delightfully perfect in all ways, thank you very much.
② His personal curse is to live in a world populated by lowlyhumans non-cats (aka geriatric immortals) who simply don’t appreciate the true extent of his superior intellect.
③ He is quite involuntarily hilarious as shrimp.
④ He has a thing for Belgian chocolatescrunchy grasshoppers and fuzzy toilet seat covers. (What, you didn’t know Poirot was a fan of latrine ornamentations? You obviously don’t know my boyfriend as well as I do.)
⑤ This story starts out with Poirot Poe being slightly indisposed and Hastings Gwyn investigating on his behalf. The Mystery of Hunter’s Lodge, anyone?
⑥ The most indisputable proof of all:
Ha! Told ya.
P.S. Poe favors the Ratatouille method of investigation, but whether this was also the case for Poirot has yet to be confirmed by Christie scholars. Or Miss Marple.
Oh, Mr. Poe. How quickly you're growing up. Not just physically (although it is tragic you're not fitting in your favorite hiding spot anymore), but... YOU'RE LEARNING SO MUCH! I mean, you're willing to tolerate Cesar in your territory because it makes your mommies happy and that's kinda huge.
But before that, you have a mystery to unravel. Visions of doom! Haven reverting to it's primeval state! A CURSED COLLAR! Honestly, the collar might have been the worst part of it all up until the doom started interrupting his nap time.
No worries, though. Mr. Poe is on the job and he's not going to stop hunting down answers until he's satisfied. BRING ON THE MYSTERIES! MR. POE IS ON THE CASE!
Yet another cute little number about a cat that helps solve yet another mystery. This one seemed shorter, but I am not sure if that is because I liked it better, or if it really is shorter.
The cat, who can turn into a boy, helps solve a yet another mystery, this time about about why his Enjoyable and recommended more than the others. You don't really have to have read the previous entries in this series to read this short. The author is good at telling you what you need to know without boring exposition.
I adore Mr. Poe... almost as much as he adores himself. My only qualm is that he's so hard on one of my other favorite Decentverse characters, Cèsar. However, I think that The Masque of the Red Cat may mark the turning point for Cèsar and Mr. Poe.
A couple of secrets are revealed in The Masque of the Red Cat, but not Mr. Poe's. It was close though and I'm sure that there will come a time when Mr. Poe will have to let his mommies in on everything he's capable of. In the mean time, I'm sure he will use his unparalleled skills to help keep the Haven free from the unexpected danger that he's best at stopping before it starts.
The next book in the series is Fall of the House of Cat. FYI - I love the play on the titles from one of my other favorite authors - very appropriate given who Mr. Poe is named after. <3 I also love the lightness of these books that isn't always found in the rest of the Descentverse series.
Reine gets into the mindset of a cat so well that I half wonder, like, maybe she is a cat that turns into a human to type novels. Mr. Poe is so convincing, doing silly cat things and of course explaining why he meant to do them. Mr. Poe does NOT get started or do embarrassing things; he makes purposeful choices -- even if he ends up stuck under the bed. Details like Poe as a human trying to resist the urge to lick his hand and instead playing with the feathers on his masque make the story enjoyable. As usual, I never really care about the mystery, just Mr. Poe. :)
Because these books come later, there are minor spoilers for other books. Like, I've met Penny the orc from the Dana McIntryre books, but now she's a zombie. How?! Why?!
My favorite was the afterwords by the author. I am blessed to have been loved by a black cat. Gingers are my favorites, still, but blacks have a special spot in my heart. And I miss all the animals I have had the honor of sharing a part of my life with. I don't understand people who don't like animals, or who dislike a certain kind of animal, like cats, because they are this and that, when every cat person knows all that is just stupid prejudices and totally wrong. Right now I share my life with a ginger called Katja, and my love for her makes me weak and powerless, and I know she loves me. So, I will be thinking about Sara's pets whenever I read her books. <3 And mine. <3
Mr. Poe really is growing up in this story both physically (which is so hard as his favorite spots are out of reach) as well as being able to think a little bit beyond himself to what is important for his mummies.
There is of course a case to be solved for Mr. Poe but don't worry he is on the job and ready to help even though he has a collar that is impacting his abilities.
This is another great chapter in Mr. Poe's story and I can't wait to hear the next one.
There is nothing like taking a break with a quick read. It could be done at ant time and this one is just another I highly recommend.
Even for a short read the author still is able to bring you into the story. The characters make you laugh or even cry. Poe, of course, is my favorite. As a cat person I can relate in too many ways.
Poe has learned about new magic he has. He sees the end of his home. Will he be able to figure out the cause and save it? With humor and arrogance and a bit of cleverness, the answer will be found.
A fast read that I enjoyed. This is a fun series. I love the cat character as well as all the other mystical characters. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series!
I love the way that SM Reines mind works and I love they way she so understands cats! This book is funny, quirky and entertaining. Short but brilliant!
