VIOLET

I fell in love with the boy at the movie theater.
He had untied sneakers and a penchant for everyone but me.

But I’ve grown up, moved away, and created a life with options.
Ten years later, I’m now out of them.

Everything is exactly the same at Foxe Hill.
Keaton still has that dimpled smile. And I’m still a mess for him.

KEATON

I noticed the girl behind the camera.
She was the town’s little sister to everyone but me.

But it’s been too long and I’ve been too patient.
Ten years later, I’m not sure I have any more patience to spare.

Violet’s shy pink lips are now a fiery red.
And, this time, I can’t stay away.

Match Cut is a full-length, stand-alone, small town romance with fun campfire hangouts, movie theater makeouts, and campfire shenanigans. It is the first book in the Foxe Hill Series. It’s been a while since I read any small-town romance or even a brother’s-best-friend-romance but when the opportunity arose to read Match Cut, I took it. The novel sounded like something I would enjoy very much. It also sounded like something I needed at the time. Something light and easy. A story that made me feel good and forget my current busy life.

Julie Olivia nailed it with her descriptions of Foxe Hill. Even though I haven’t visited very many typical US small towns, I could picture this one perfectly. I could easily see myself strolling down Main Street, having breakfast at Keaton’s sandwich shop, checking out the fountain, and last but not least visiting the chicken memorial. I was laughing so hard at that chicken memorial part. You won’t believe but the town where I grew up and spent 22 years of my life has a chicken memorial! I kid you not! It’s not because a chicken died there or because a chicken founded my hometown (my colleague at work thinks otherwise!), it’s because quite a few residents of my hometown breed and trade chickens, hens, geese etc.

I prefer to read about strong female leads and Violet definitely checked that box. She’s independent, strong, confident, and a total badass. I really liked getting to know and reading about her. Her occupation as a documentary director was the cherry on top of her amazing character. I’ve never a read a book with that particular job but I loved it.
What impressed me the most was that Violet got out of that town after graduation and pursued a career that made her happy. She didn’t care what the people in town said because she wanted to do her own thing, she wanted to live her life that suited her and not her family or friends or anyone else. I really want more of those confident kick-ass women in books.

Keaton seemed like a nice enough guy but there was nothing to him really. I didn’t find him in the least bit interesting. Sure, he was described as attractive and super sexy but looks aren’t everything. The thing that turned me off the most was his lack of ambition. Yes, he had his job in the sandwich shop, his own sandwich shop, but what else has he been doing in the past 10 years?

Match Cut is a typical brother’s-best-friend romance. It was super sweet, dreamy, funny, and also romantic. I loved the lightness and easiness of the story. There was no heavy baggage or demons from the past. Nevertheless, I wished the story had a little more depths. I also wished to learn more about Keaton’s and Violet’s pasts.

Match Cut is a super sweet, small-town romance for a rainy weekend. Despite my issues, this novel has a lot of potential.

Today was a rainy day, which made for the perfect reading day. I spent the last two days struggling to get through 60 pages of a book. I decided to put that one on hold and pick Match Cut by @julieoliviaauthor I’m so glad that I did because I read it all today!⁣

Julie reached out to me about her newest release Match Cut, which comes out June 15th. She told me it was a small town romantic comedy and I knew I had to read it! ⁣I would love to take this time to thank her for allowing me to read and review this book. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
We follow our main character Violet who is returning home after producing a successful documentary in California. She’s about to make her second one, but the only problem is she has writer’s block. When Violet returns home she reunited with her brother’s best friend Keaton and the sparks fly! ⁣⁣⁣

This was my first Julie Olivia novel and it certainly won’t be my last. I love that there was tension and it was a slow burn. The couple took more than half of the book before they even shared a kiss. We got to see both Violet’s and Keaton’s perspectives, which really helped with the character development. I loved this small town of Foxe Hill. What I love most about small town romances is that they are homey and comforting. This was a really sweet and engaging love story that I couldn’t help but smile while reading. It isn’t said, but I really hope there’s another book with Asher’s (Violet’s brother) love story!⁣⁣⁣

[I received an arc for an honest review]

Match Cut is a cute new romance by author Julie Olivia. An ''older brother's best friend" trope with a small town setting.

Violet left her small town to make documentaries. Her first film was a success, but she's hit a major writers block and is hoping a relaxing summer at home with give her her next big idea. She doesn't have to time nurse the crush she's always had on her older brother's best friend Keaton. Turns out Keaton also has a crush for her and when he volunteers to help her with her next project their feelings for each other come out. But they have to keep it on the down low because her brother would not be pleased. In the end when it comes to her next film she has to decide between staying true to herself or selling out.

""Two, five, seven.. it doesn't matter how many years pass; the flipping in my stomach at the mention of Keaton's name has never faltered."

This was a really easy read. While it had some good sexual tension build up between Violet and Keaton, it wasn't drawn out and complicated by a bunch of drama. The romance between them is comforting and a slow burn. Their habit of sneaking into the old theater to watch films before it opened was adorable and made me wish I had grown up in a small town. Foxe Hill and its residents will put a smile on your face.

In the end, Match Cut was a light small town romance with a cozy feel. This is not my first Julie Olivia, and she will continue to be an author whose books I look forward to.

When documentarian Violet returns home to Foxe Hill, she’s looking for inspiration for her newest film. She’s nervous to return home because as a teen she had a crush on her brother’s best friend, Keaton, and she wants to under no circumstance catch feelings for him.

Keaton never left Foxe Hill and instead took over his family’s sandwich shop, a staple in their small town. He’s surprised, but pleased to see Violet return, as he’s always had a secret crush on his best friend’s little sister. And when she’s back in town, sparks fly and neither of them can deny the feelings between them.

Match Cut by Julie Olivia is a feel-good small town romance. This is low-angst, low-drama, so if you’re looking for something easy, this is for you. I wish there had been more conflict, more tension. I didn’t feel much toward the characters, although this was a quick and fun read. 3/5 stars.

It's a cute short read but it felt like the big brother in the way trope was exaggerated and not a big deal after all.
Keaton and Violet have always had a connection and even ten years later its easy for them to reconnect.

Stop what you are doing and get this book!
Oh, my heart! This book is beyond sweet!

Violet returns to her home town, Foxe Hill, after her first documentary gets produced. Needing inspiration for her next documentary, Violet seeks solitude, inspiration, and comfort. Foxe Hill provides this, however, there is still the distract of Keaton, Violet's brother's best friend. Will Keaton still think of her as the annoying younger sister?

I can't get over how much I loved this book, genuinely I cannot find one fault! The pace flowed perfectly, the characters were strong and individual. There was no "get to the point" or "why can't you see what is right in front of you" moments. The secondary characters were well balanced, strong, funny, and supportive. The main characters followed their dreams, were loyal and honest. The chemistry between the characters was perfect. It didn't overpower the storyline. The storyline is strong and it has an important message to never give up on your dreams. Even when it may be hard to get there! The only problem I have is, the book ended. I need more! Asher and Lily need a book!

I highly recommend this book! It will definitely be going into my permanent collection.

Thank you Julie Olivia for a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

The blurb for this book had me wanting to read the story. Starting out I had a hard time getting into the story but about 40% in it really picked up for me and I didn't want to put it down.

I loved Keaton & Violet, there was some angst and their chemistry was great. There were so many little funny moments during their banter too!

If you like a witty brothers best friend then you will enjoy this story. I will definitely be reading more from Julie in the future 🖤

This is the story of Violet and Keaton. She’s come home to overcome her writer’s block and find inspiration. Only she’s still got a huge crush on her brother’s best friend Keaton and now he’s sexier than ever. When he starts to return the attraction she knows she’s in trouble. I enjoyed this sweet, charming romance. I received an arc of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is the first storyline in the series and focuses on Violet and Keaton. These characters are engaging and well developed they have known each for years and have had feelings that neither one would admit to. The flow of the storyline flowed smoothly from beginning to the end.

This was an adorable small town romance and I really enjoyed Keaton and Violet as characters. I could really feel the chemistry between these two and I was totally rooting for them to get together.
I do wish we had a little more of these two officially ‘together’ before the end but overall a super cute read!

“Tell me something…”

Match Cut made me swoon, giggle, and sigh from beginning to end. Keaton and Violet’s relationship runs as deep as their love for their small town. When Violet returns, determined not to let her feelings for her brother’s best friend ruin her again, she buries all of her time, energy, and love into her next documentary. But Keaton is everywhere, and the internal fights that they each have about not wanting to ruin their relationship are their own little heartaches. Julie does such a phenomenal job of combining lost love with a voice for each character—it’s one of the reasons that I keep coming back to her books! Violet and Keaton are quippy, and I love it! Their story will make your heart ache for the decisions that Vi and Keaton have to make, giggle and swoon over how easily they continue to fall together, and want to go on a camping trip.

I read this a long time ago so I don't remember too much of it but it was a fun read. The plot development was great and the characters were swoon-worthy. I really liked the brother's best friend trope with a brother who was willingly accepting of the MC's relationship with his best friend. I did not expect him to play the matchmaker but I think Julie's writing made it refreshing to see a different ending to this trope. I was a little disappointed by the following book because it just didn't match the energy of the first book but if anyone's looking for a quick country romance read, this is definitely a good choice.

This was good, don’t take me wrong I liked it, I really did. I find fascinating Julie’s writing style, it’s refreshing, witty and funny. She doesn’t use the same phrases over and over again which is pretty good.
Having said that, why the 3 stars, you’d say? Well, I didn’t like Violet, she was, in my opinion, boring...and I didn’t connect with her search for the documentary thing mixed with the romance, I guess I needed more emotions going around. And a little bit more of epilogue.
Anyway. I will keep reading books from this author, that’s for sure.

"Tell me something..." Violet and Keaton would say. So I will.

This was my first book by Julie and it's a small town romance with a brother's best friend trope. It was a cute easy read that can easily light up the mood.

There wasn't a character that I didn't like. Vi and Keaton's chemistry felt really natural and nothing felt forced.

This book was fine. It was very easy to read, but maybe a little boring. I don’t have anything negative to say about the characters, but they just didn’t excite me. I didn’t really care about the plot either. The book felt like it was a little too short for anything to actually happen. I was underwhelmed by the book, but I don’t think it was bad.

This book wasn’t the most exciting but I still found it heartwarming nonetheless. Very much an ode to small town America. Both Violet and Keaton were good characters who I found myself rooting for.

One Bad Element Outweighs Many Good

I enjoy romance of many stripes, but sometimes I do question why I keep reading contemporary romances. Perhaps it is because I have found a few books and authors that I enjoy. So many contemporary romances oddly combine uncomfortable parts. Like this book, for example. I liked the small-town feel of it. The characters are likable, decent people. There’s no heavy angst or drama. There's a charming, slow-burn feel to the brother’s-best-friend romance. Both characters have room to grow, and each learn something about themselves as they look at their world through the eyes of the other.

It all sounds good, right? And it is, mostly. But the one thing I can never get past, and frankly, ruins a book for me, is the casual use of profanity. I truly wish that authors would put that a book has swearing or other crude language (at any level) in the description/blurb. That way, people like me could quickly bypass the book. And, no, saying that a book is meant for 18+ audiences doesn’t cut it; when I see that, I think it means that it will have steamy sex scenes, not profanity. I have no issue with those!

For me, all the other delightful elements can carry me along quite well for a while… until I run across those profane or crude words. They simply jar me right out of the story as I believe that the swearing is neither warranted nor necessary in a small-town contemporary romance (or any fiction, really). So, while I liked many elements of this book, I found the swearing and crudeness pulled me right out of my suspended disbelief, ruining the effect of the book. If you don't mind swearing in your fiction or contemporary romance, this probably won't affect you as much as it did me.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Sweet small town romance!

I am a huge fan of small town and brothers best friend romances. In Match Cut we get both. But we also get this wonderful slow burn romance between two people who have had some type of crush or feelings for each other for years. And watching them reunite as friends and then more was wonderful. ⁣
⁣
Violet is this talented documentarian who was able to leave their small town and see the world. She’s come back a success but is struggling to find inspiration. Keaton never left their town and he’s been ok with that as he loves his life. As the two get to know each other again and finally give in to their attraction, they also broaden each other’s perspectives...Violet sees the good in their town and Keaton realizes there is more to the world than just their little town. Can they learn to compromise on what they want in life? Or is Violet leaving as soon as inspiration hits? ⁣

This is a sweet and easy read. No complicated drama, just a really good emotional romance. I loved the dual POV as we watch them fall of each other but also grow up in many ways too. They do have to deal with some decisions/disagreements but it was done so maturely that it made my heart so happy. No unnecessary drama from not communicating or discussing which to me is wonderful. Overall, this was a highly enjoyable read for me. ⁣

I've got a soft spot for best friends sister/brothers best friend trope there is something about forbidden romances that is so exciting. This was bang on the mark for me.
Keaton and Violet have crushed on each other since they were kids. They never acted on it or told the other for fear of upsetting Violets brother, Keaton's best friend. 10 years have passed since Violet left town to pursue her dreams of making documentaries and when she rocks back up in town all the old feelings for the pair come flooding back.
The chemistry that built up with these 2 was fab. It was a nice slow sizzle whilst they got reacquainted untill it finally catches and the pair seemed to ignite. I loved the story line. Small town romances are always so cute. I found the story really interesting being centered around the idea of violet trying to find her next movie plot. Julies writing flows so nicely it draws you in and I found myself not wanting to put this down. I just wish it had been drawn out a bit more at the end the conflict was over as soon as it begun. First book by Julie Olivia and definitely won't be my last

Match Cut was a light, small town romance that gives you the welcoming cozy vibes.

I read this In one sitting! One thing I love about small town romances is the familiarity of the characters and revisiting their pasts.

Keaton and Violet have known & crushed on one another for 10 years. When Violet returns all those feelings rush back and leave these two questioning their friendship and fearing Violets brother, Asher’s reaction. All the while Violet struggles with her writers block.

The brothers best friend aspect I felt was a little exaggerated. It seemed like a big deal but turned out not to be. Keaton and Violet had some sexual tension, I was dying for them to get together. The only thing that really bothered me was how drawn out the slow burn was. What I loved though was that the plot line was simple, there was no added in/ unnecessary drama for word counts sake.

Keaton was a true gentleman and sweetheart, I adored his character. I also loved how confident and genuine Violet was.

It was my first Julie Olivia book but it won’t be my last!!

“Match Cut”—Julie Olivia [4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️] This is my first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed this fun, lighthearted read. Violet is going through a severe case of writers block on the creation of her new movie, so she temporarily moves back to her small hometown of Foxe Hill. She really wants to not fall for her brother’s best friend Keaton again, but it’s hard to ignore how much he has changed over the years. She doesn’t think Keaton could notice her in that way and would only think of her as his best friend’s little sister, but boy is she wrong! Keaton always had a thing for Violet, especially now after all these years and the strong and successful woman she has become. Violet really needs to focus on her movie with no distractions, but what’s a better distraction than the man she’s wanted all these years who wants her back? I wish this book was just a little longer, but overall this was a great read and I really enjoyed the characters and storyline. I definitely recommend checking out this book when it comes out on June 15th! 👍🏼📚

I'm a fan of Julie Olivia's previous books, but I definitely have a new favorite! This book was so much fun to read, and there were so many lines that had me laughing out loud. I was so drawn into the story right from the beginning, and couldn't wait to see where it would go. The dual perspective was flawlessly written, with Violet and Keaton both having a strong voice.

The first ⅔ of the book were amazing and I couldn't put it down!! I just wish the last third of the book had been a bit more stretched out, because I definitely wanted to see more of them happy together both before and after the conflict. The story had a good resolution though, and the epilogue was sweet. I'd definitely recommend you pick this one up if you're looking for a lighthearted contemporary romance.

Thank you Julie Olivia for sending me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

although i was very into the plot right from the start, (i really like the idea of ten years secretly being into someone and what happens next), i’m left unsatisfied.

being a light and funny read that you can go through it extremely fast, Keaton charmed me right from the start, all the interactions with the characters were very pleasant. BUT. i felt as if it was very rushed towards the end. the last couple of chapters were rushed and written just so to be written. like the get together scene and the “i love you” was almost out of context and was there not good linked but there in order to be there. it seemed forced and not well interpreted, in my opinion.

other than that, i enjoyed it.

Violet and Keaton are the classic brother’s best friend and little sister love story. The amount of detail put into this book by the author really added to the story, giving their connection depth. The small moments from their past led to their present, a budding love between them. I loved the importance of the old theater to their connection, a place they could be themselves. The small town setting was the perfect backdrop for their love to unfold! And the cover is absolutely perfect! The details used in the book show through in the cover picture and it is such a testimony to the characters personalities! I can’t wait to read Asher’s story in Present Perfect, releasing June 17!

A brother's best friend romance set back in the character's hometown sounds right up my alley, however, this novel fell slightly flat in my opinion. I felt like there was a lot of repetition that the fmc had writer's block and was struggling to come up with her "car horn idea" but those phrases started to get monotonous. Keaton also seemed to have very little going for him, he has a sandwich shop within a town that is slowly diminishing, shouldn't he be working on marketing or something to increase sales? He seems to have very little to show for the last 10 years she's been gone. I'm working my way through Julie Olivia's backlist so I'll continue the series (especially since it focuses on this fmc's professor brother).

Match Cut was my first book by Julie Olivia!
I really liked it, it was a very easy read and not too heavy.
I've always loved the trope of brothers best friend so when i saw that this is what it is i had to give it a go!
I'm quite glad i did, i really liked Julie's style of writing. It hooks you and flows well.
I really liked the chemistry between Violet and Keaton, it just felt easy and natural.
If you looking for a lighthearted easy read then I'd definitely give this a try!
