Helen is an Australian author, a wife, mother to two boys and a major chocoholic. She has always had a love of books, her love affair with romance starting with Mills & Boon books and historical romance novels as a teen. She loves the journey to the happily ever after. " Life is not always easy but true love will always win out in the end."
I haven’t finished this book yet. I’m at the 60% mark and I’m entirely bored and annoyed with it. The dialogue is forced and lacking. The drama of the plot was what I wanted to read about but the reactions of the characters are not realistic. The MMC has to be bipolar or something because his behavior is extreme with literally everyone in his life. That would be fine if it matched the everyday MMC that the story has the reader following. It’s like the story is written about two completely different men.
The author keeps giving the MMC these crazy situations to cover up a severe lack of normal processes for all his actions. Like he abandoned the FMC and the baby because he believed his vasectomy was still in effect but later he randomly throws out that some other women had tried to pass a baby off as his once before. Ummm, okay. But so far there is no mention if he actually proved she was wrong or had lied. Then after the MMC realizes the truth he gets into a car accident trying to get back to her but for the two years of his recovery not one single person he calls family or friend is told of his situation. He completely blocks them out of his life. Which he had also done when he got rid of the FMC originally he blocked these same people out of his life then too.
This is not normal behavior! It in no way matches the MMC I’m reading about who is begging for a second chance. These two parts of this MMC are completely different people and the story doesn’t flow well because of this. And that’s not even touching on the FMC’s absolute patheticness of BBS.
The story so far is not working. Good luck.
UPDATE
Yep, I’m right. The MMC is crazy. I’m at the 83% mark and he again lashes out like a two year old. This character is poorly written. The author has the nerve to explain all this drama as the main characters needing time to mature but no. THEY didn’t need time. The MMC is just plain nuts. He has some sort of mental dysfunction that the author doesn’t want the reader to realize. He’s more than a morons worth of stupid and it’s in no way rationally related to the calm kind regretful MMC that most of this book revolves around. He keeps doing OTT things that are out of proportion with the rest of the characters behavior. And it’s always when he gets a shock of some kind. All while him never having shown signs of this behavior before the FMC came into his life. He’s crazy. Not romantic. Smdh.
FINAL UPDATE
Okay so this book started on the drama of the pregnancy reveal, the accusations, the heartbreak(for lack of a better word), and it was decent enough. A shock for sure but not the gut punch I wanted it to be. It plays out that the MMC eventually finds out he is wrong but as he is thinking about the years in between then and him going after the FMC and his child now, he did acknowledge that he had had several other casual encounters (basically ONS’s) because he couldn’t open himself up to another women. NOWHERE does it imply that he had had an injury that prevented him from coming back for them sooner. That came up somewhere at 70-75% mark and it felt like it was thrown in there to give him another cop out for his lengthy abandonment.
While I’m mentioning the injury, there are several instances in this book that are medical related situations and the above being the worst of them, the author over simplifies these situations and the characters get over them like they were brand new again. His medical situation alone would leave years of restrictions and he wouldn’t have looked the same when he finally turned up again because he would have been bedridden and gaining weight and loss of muscle mass from that time would have shown on his body for sure. The others were blatantly melodramatic scenes for excitement in this boring story and were just wasted efforts for plot twists.
Anyway, the MMC is garbage, the FMC is pathetic but strong in a weird way. If it was me in her shoes I would never have given him a second chance but I would have done as she did and allowed all the access to the child that could be arranged. The best positive thing I liked about her character was that she wasn’t celibate while the douche was gone being a douche. It wasn’t a relationship as she understandably had hang ups but it was a steady’ish something with another man. The child however was written well above her age range for the complex thought and actions she displayed. It was so fake and so poorly written. I can only smh.
So if you want a dragged out mess of a story that at the end gets sickeningly sappy, then this might be for you. Now that I understand that this author is about stupid drama I might give her another chance but this is definitely not my choice of writing style. If there has to be crazy scenarios for extreme drama then at least have it make sense and have characters that match their actions. The MMC was like reading someone with split personalities or an evil twin switch. Come on…
This style of writing just wasn't for me. It did a lot more telling than showing what happened and made it hard to connect with the story. There also started to be some random time jumps here and there that seemed sudden and were in odd places. Scenes were skipped in these time jumps that felt important to the story but instead of seeing them happen the next chapter would be 3 or more months later and we'd just be told what had happened in those months. It made the romance hard to believe and took away any chemistry the characters might have had.
I am very surprised I ended up liking this book. I for sure thought that I would not love the groveling or the heroine would give in to easily but that's not the case. The heroine made him work for it and she reacted in my opinion like a strong woman, she didn't forgive him easily and she made him prove that he was a changed man. Now the reason I gave this 5 stars, THE HEROINE WAS NOT CELIBATE DURING THE SEPARATION, and neither was the hero. For once, there is a book where the heroine actually went out and moved on, and had a life. The hero too had a few one-night stands but he didn't turn out to be this huge manwhore, SHOCKER.
This book had a little bit of excessive drama but I would rather read that then the shitty second chance romances where the heroines are so quick to forgive heroes who have been so intolerable and who barely apologize. This Hero apologized and groveled, he showed in his actions that he wasn't a shitty human any longer, so yeah I like him.
I genuinely loved both the hero and heroine and their daughter. Its a long book but it gave me a very satisfactory epilogue which I love! (Epilogue: 10 years in the future)
The problem here lies all in the execution. I’ve said it a lot, soapy romance needs to be around 200 pages or it gets old. They're unrealistic and best in smaller doses. I’m not sure how long this book is, but it felt like 400 pages… it dragged on and on. ZZZZZZzzzz
Just your typical white people romance where the love interest accuses his soon to be wife of cheating, lying and being a whore with next to 0 groveling but of course he gets forgiven because of a thing that happened to him that one time which i am sure the author just pulled out of her ass when she realized that normal people would not, in fact, root for that asshole and she made him a little too irredeemable. But yeah this is a book that has a love interest who would be the "creepy" ex in normal romance novels.
This book starts off with their relationship before the big blow up happens. They meet, fall in love and a few weeks before their wedding, she tells him that she's pregnant. He asks who the whores kid belong to (cuz is it notaho? No!.its idahooooooooooe). He throws her out on the streets and she runs away to the other side of the country which is Australia.
This is the same exact scenario as ruthless bastard and I was so dang disappointed that she used the same exact situation. Not plagiarizing but it was very similar and not very original.
The characters in this story get in a lot.of car accidents and go to the hospital a lot. There are lots.of.back and forth flashbacks that drove me crazy and took me out of the story. They had no depth or character except for being very stupid at times. And guess what!? They have a kid and guess what theyre.able to do a lot even though they have a young child?! That's right!!! they eff lots!! With a 4 year old! Fiction is so much better than real life amirite? 😂😂😂😐
The beginning wad great with the angst and drama but then it just plodded along. Forgettable
Nicholas Moore thinks his fiancé Alannah cheated when she didn't, so he boots her out, pregnant and heartbroken she makes a good life for herself and her daughter never expecting that one day Nicholas would come to her wanting to know the daughter he denied.
The blurb had me really hesitant to read this, as I thought I'd hate it, luckily it turned out better than expected even if the drama didn't have me drawn in as I had hoped. I liked the fact the heroine wasn't celibate and her life wasn't on pause whilst separated from the hero. Really enjoyed that she made him work for her forgiveness.
I read this exact scenario in an older book that was written before DNA. The H had a vasectomy and when the h winds up pregnant he doesn’t even consider maybe his vasectomy failed. He kicks her out of their home without any medical testing and it takes him 6 years to figure out he was ignorant. Then he’s on it to win back the love of his life…. Meanwhile he had figured it out 2 years prior that he was wrong. H is tstl.
Almost a DNF . The plot was boring and predictable. They love each other but he suspect she cheated so he breaks up with her. Three years later he find out that he was the one that was at fault for their breakup so he tries to make amends...two years later. 🤣 90%of the book is about him groveling
It's not easy admitting to like characters that by principle you want to hate. Nick and Alannah are determined to ride roughshod over the heart. Wilder deals with real emotion that is not always beautiful. From misunderstandings to missed opportunities, Making it Right dares to be raw and it's that unpredictability that works in it's favor.
This book was so cute and such an enjoyable read! I love when books just flow and you can devour them.
Alannah and Nicholas were happy and in love about to get married when Alannah announces she’s pregnant, assuming the worst Nicholas kicks her out and calls her a cheater due to the fact he has a vasectomy. Not knowing what to do Alannah moves across the country to be closer to her mum who can help raise the baby
Fast forward 5 years, Nicholas has decided to get his head of his ass and finally be the father that he was meant to be. You knew that Alannah was going to be hesitant and not fall for Nicholas charm but what can you do when the man you love dearly and the father of your child comes back into your life
I loved how much Nicholas fought for his family after everything that happened, I love how cute and adorable Charlotte is and how much Alannah grew when she had to be a single mum
This book honestly was super cute and had the sweetest HEA, definitely recommend giving it a read

Meant to be Alannah and Nicholas had a fairtytale start to their relationship. The prologue beautifully describes how they met, and their early months together, living in the beautiful Sydney harbour-side penthouse apartment, up until she tells him that she’s pregnant. And that’s where his sweetness ends. And it’s devastating for her. Fast forward five years, and Alannah is living on the other side of the country in Perth with their daughter Charlotte (Charlie) - and her mum lives close by for support as well. After a couple of medical surprises, Nicholas is finally regretful of his words, and the decision he made those years ago. But will he be able to redeem himself, in order to connect with his young daughter, and her mum? He completely broke her heart, so should she give him another chance to make amends? My heart breaks for all of the unnecessary hurt and betrayal Alannah encountered at the hands of Nicholas’ selfishness, doubt and mistrust in her love for him. She’s such an incredibly strong woman, that deserves a happily ever after for her and her daughter. The journey this story takes you on is both heart-breaking and heart-warming. Nick really makes a huge effort to develop a relationship with his daughter, and trying to reconnect with Lana. The countless trips he makes to see them and spend quality time with them is testament to how remorseful he is. There’s lots of drama, frustration, disappointment, acceptance, adventure, passion and love. The characters are very likeable (most of the time), and the support they have from their family and friends is beautiful. They keep each honest and know where they stand. With all their complexities and imperfections, they’re just perfect for each other. I read this story (though a little different) in Fan Fiction, and I loved it even more this time around! I would definitely recommend this book. It’ll make you smile, shake your head, sigh, laugh, smirk, blush and cry. It’s emotional and wonderful! I can’t wait to read more of this author’s work! I received a free ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If you love second chance and slow burns, then this one is for you. The undeniable chemistry between Nick and Alannah was sizzling.
Nick and Alannah’s story isn’t just about getting back together, there’s many obstacles they must fight through to make it to the other side. The time and patience it took on opening up to one another again, making those walls crumble down, was real and raw emotions you would see in a true relationship.
Charlotte brings comedy relief when needed and does it perfectly. Watching the three of them come together as a family was inspiring. You want to fight for them, with them.
Wilder took a difficult situation any couple can be in and created a beautiful story weaved with love and forgiveness.
Making it right was my first book that i have read from Helen Wilder and wow it wont be the last. Not only did the main female character have my Name it was even spelt the same way haha.
I loved the alpha Nick brought to the book and the strength Alannah had
Alannah and Nicholas love story was a crazy roller coaster that had alot of emotions and heart ache.
Nick had alot of issues within him self starting with not knowing his real parents and finding out he had a heart defult that was hereditary from his father.
Alannah loved designing and met nick at a fundraiser and fell for him straight away.
They were engaged and then something happened that made them have a bad split that caused Alannah to not cope and be very hateful when nick was involved.
To find out all the amazing things and what made them split you have to read this amazing book.
Making It Right is the first I have read by this author and I really liked it. A second chance with some angst and emotional moments. I wasn't sure how Nick would redeem himself. I was glad Alannah made Nick work hard for it! I loved them. Nick and little Charlie were adorable together.
I’m a big fan of Helens work and she brought this book so much justice. I’m a sucker for second chance romance, and I couldn’t put this book down. The heartache both Nick and Alannah went through you can just feel it. The banner between the two and you add a little sweet yet sassy little girl in the mix and you come with a winner. This book was everything I’d hoped it would be.
This book started with a bang.. Wow did I hate the main character. Then as we drove into the story a lot of things made sense. Still the book was filled with surprises and also parts were your like really...I love the way the author brought out the women's part as strong and still very level headed and truly believed in what she was doing. I felt the author really did try to make him work very hard to win a place back into what he called his family. I really enjoyed learning about both of them and feeling like I was part of their crazy world. Great job keeping the readers in the book.
I really liked this book. From the first page I was invested in this couple and this story. I enjoyed the chemistry and I also liked that by the end I felt like we were friends.
This is a classic second chance romance, but it knows how to get you "involved" in the story. It's full of emotional moments, so you'll experience the whole package of feelings from love to hate, from tears to smiles. And of course you'll adore, Charlotte! *I had the honor to beta read this book*
I freaking loved this book it’s amazing. Shows that love can overcome things in life and that family is amazing thing to have. I love Nick and Alannah, I love how they where able to overcome everything they went through with each other. As Nick was very determined and wouldn’t give up on the woman he loved.
Absolutely EXCEPTIONAL!!! WOW What an incredible journey of second chances, love, faith, sadness , tragedy, loss, suspense, etc. Amazing characters and story line. I seriously devoured every page!!! Major tearjerker so get the tissues ready and plan on reading it all in a day as I could not put it down!!!
Nicholas had to be the meanest guy ever when he sent Alannah away my heart was breaking for her but 5 years have passed so when Alannah sees him for the first time she is cold and standoffish. Nicholas tossed her out with nothing and he spent those years thinking the worst even though he still loved her but when he received news from his doctor he knew he had to find her. I love second chances but I wasn’t so sure Nicholas deserves one and Alannah is a better person than most to even consider it. Perfect second chance romance.
OMG this book takes forgiveness to the next level. I went in thinking “WHAT?!” how will I ever like Nicholas. He is a “BIG” turd from the beginning. He was so awful to Alannah and I felt spiteful throughout the first part of this book wanting him to get his. How did he redeem himself? He turned into an “AMAZING” father. Adding how hard he had to work for Alannah’s to even tolerate him. She definitely was the bigger person only wanting what is best for her child. The icing on the cake, even though he devastated her, she wasn’t sitting around waiting for him. I LOVE that.
As the story unfolds it becomes obvious that all is not as it seems. Clarity and details are revealed in eye opening ways. Everything about this story drew me in. It felt therapeutic the journey it took me on. The one part that I struggled with is that no one on either side of the families communicated in five years. Yes it was explained but I didn’t buy it completely.
This story overall is marvelous. I definitely would like to read more from this author. Happy Reading Everyone!
I went back and forth a lot whether to give this 3 or 4 stars, feeling like 3 just wasn’t enough to do this book justice and 4 was a little too much, so 3.5 it is! Nick and Alannah were set to get married but a surprise pregnancy put a kink in those plans. Five years later he wants his family back and is determined to do anything to get it. While Alannah believes Charlotte deserves to have a relationship with her father, she isn’t willing to forgive and forget quite so easily. Nick needs to work on himself and earning back her trust and love if it’s ever going to work out between them.
What I really enjoyed about this story is that is was slowburn and Alannah didn’t fall over her feet immediately letting Nick back into her life. She was incredibly strong to be so broken-hearted over everything he had done but still let him get to know Charlotte for the sake of her daughter. She exhibited a selflessness even in her anger that really made me like her character. Nick was also a sweetheart and you can’t help but feel for him, even when you want to shake him for his stupidity. His growth as a character from the start of the book to the finish is so great watch.
The reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars, even though I really loved the storyline, had mostly to do with editing issues. There were a lot of sentences that the wording was wrong and it didn’t really make sense, even though I knew what the author meant. Also PUNCTUATION. So many spots where a comma was needed or a period and it was just a space. Additionally a lot of the dialogue came across as super dramatic and cheesy at times, specifically when the characters were angry. It was kind of hard to buy into. These issues were the worst in the first third of the book and made it somewhat of a struggle for me to want to keep reading, but I’m so happy that I did and I encourage you to push through it too!!
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys second chance romances, dads who absolutely ADORE their children and are willing to do anything for their family, and female MCs who are selfless but not pushovers and are willing to admit when they are wrong.
Now this is a second chance romance that didn’t steer me wrong! After an awful breakup, Nick realizes just how wrong he was after a few years. He makes it his mission to get Alannah back and to know his child. There wasn’t OW drama, there wasn’t OTT madness, and there WAS a reason for Nick’s delayed return to Alannah’s life that I honestly wasn’t expecting. This author gave me a great story, a few WTF moments I never saw coming, and realism in the end. It was all so well done.

The book opens with Nick and Lana happily engaged with their Wedding in few weeks. Nick had a vasectomy when he was 21 because of his hereditary heart condition. His first mistake is not telling Lana in fear of her leaving him. Lana gets pregnant, she is excited, she tells Nick who threws a fit accusing her of cheating and kicking her out of his life.
What I loved about the book
- Most of the book is Nick redeeming himself, he is trying to fix the huge mistake he caused. His grovel comes in the form of actions reflecting his remorse. He never backed down from being in the wrong and played it down to "I already apologized, how many times do I have to say sorry". He kept saying sorry till the end.
- I loved Nick's flawed character. That man has issues and more secrets than a government secret agency. He had to learn to share and rely on others in his path to redemption.
- The family and friends' support was endearing and just right. Both Nick and Lana's family were on her side. They stood by her and did not cower on calling Nick's BS.
- Alannah put up quite against Nick's charm. She did not fall under his affection immediately. She was hurt and made it very clear that it will take time to even consider him back in their lives. I loved that she was not celibate and defended her actions. I loved how she maturely handled her family when she wanted to bring Nick back into their lives.
- The time frame was adequate. I think it took them about a year to get back together. Nick, in the meantime, did everything to prove to Lana that he is 100% there. He went to counseling with her, went back and forth between Sydney and Perth, and gave her the time she needed to accept him back, but most importantly, he worked on his relationship with his daughter.
What I didn't like
- The book dragged a bit. I understand the need for explaining everything and the flashbacks, but I do think 20 pages would have been cut off. However, this was a minor setback.
- The self-guilt Alanna started having. She began blaming herself for not contacting Nick's family and telling them about Charlie. In a way, I do understand that, but on the other had, they too did not make the effort to contact her and ask what really happened. So, I do not think Alannah should have felt that sorry.
- That last scene was unnecessary and to be honest it drew another red flag from Nick. The way he blamed Alannah for what happened was tasteless and the way she took it and thought he was right was infuriating.
Gave this a try because reviews said this was different from the usual HQland crap where he's horrible to her, she had no spine, gets left and treated like dirt. Long separation where he f$#%s around and she stays celibate. Then he says oops, sorry and all is forgiven.
Yeah. Not really. Welcome to doormat central. Only difference is she didn't stay celibate while he f#*^ed around. He had one night stands, she had f#*% buddy. Only good part. Had to skim a lot because the characters were annoying.
Premise: They were engaged, over a year together. She gets pregnant, he calls her a cheater, liar, whore, and physically throws her out of their apartment together with nothing but her clothes on her back. Not even her purse, phone, nothing. Then blocks her.
The story mostly begins 5 years later which is 2 years after he finds out he was wrong and having a vasectomy is not 100% guarantee of no viable swimmers, especially after a decade. He comes back and expects her to pretty much fall back into his arms despite saying he doesn't. Totally minimizes what he did- he was a total jerk. At one point he was going to demand she abort the baby, then he'd take her cheating whore ass back. Yeah, that's not what I'd call a jerk move. Calling yourself an asshole is not enough. Then he has the nerve to act jealous and demand she explain herself when he meets her f%$* buddy.
As of he has any rights. She, the doormat that she is, immediately gives him access to the daughter. The man that rejected said daughter, called her a whore's spawn, wanted her aborted, and physically threw her mother out, that man. She immediately gives that man access to her baby girl. In what world?
Highly disappointed. If you want a story with a heroine with a backbone, hero with true remorse and genuine growth, this is not it. The mouths say one thing, but actions are totally wrong. He says he's an asshole and doesn't expect her forgiveness right away. But then is pissed when she doesn't welcome his advances immediately and fall to her knees in thanks when he deigned to give her his love now that he knows she's not a lying cheating whore.
Which he found out when doctors mention it a couple of years later. No, he did not seek out the truth and ask questions himself. Because he was right and she was a whore. And even then it takes another 2 years for him to go after her. Yeah, there were some BS excuses of him being ashamed of himself and then being in some accident or something. I didn't care.
BTW- Authors need to know that STUPID IS NOT SEXY.
DNFed at around 60% after skimming about half of it.
