Picked this up because I was looking for a manga similar to Tokyo Revengers and the drama High & Low. While I won't repeat my lengthy explanation over in my TR review (Here) on how difficult it is to get me into certain shounen/seinen mangas, it did surprise me how quickly I got into Out (which is more seinen if I'm not wrong). My mood is perfect for this manga right now (seems I really am looking for certain delinquent manga).

So, my brief review of the main things that went through my mind when I picked up this manga:

1) The art was okay enough to begin with. I am biased on how nice an art style is, and often get headaches if it's not my style or difficult to deal with. It also helps if some of the characters are attractive. If there's something nice about the art style, then all the less nice elements will line up into something more tolerable. Out had decent art on the outset. So that wasn't difficult. And it's since then grown on me.

2) Personalities of characters made the art style more tolerable. For example, Kaname has easily become a favourite character of mine even though he's odd looking - he was more 'ugly' I suppose, but he's become some much more since that initial impression. Tatsuya was always fine looking. And it really bothers me how the recent volume that I'm up to has a character whose entire arc had me in such upheaval!

3) Story. Look, the beginning of Out had a good strong story. The initial idea of this manga has a clear grab but it's the main character's flaws that caught my attention. Literally, he knew he was doing something that risked his parole, and yet he couldn't help himself. It's such a cliche, yet it's presented in a way where it was hard to deny the humanness of his reaction. Now, I should point out, for a good number of chapters, the overall nature of this manga follows Tatsuya and his current position, as well his choices and his relationship with Kilihito the local delinquent gang that he befriends (in a matter of speaking) because of Kaname. But around volume 13 or thereabouts, the story does take a different turn, which I'll briefly talk about later.

4) The tone of the manga. Look, I picked this up because of Tokyo Revengers, and while there are similarities between that and Out, this one is much, much darker. Tokyo Revengers dips into darkness but Out goes much further. There are a number of very gory scenes (I'm trying to wrack my brains for a gory manga that I've read, but I can't think of it just yet) that are almost horror-like. Both mangas have a lot of fights, but TR is more idealistic and romanticised compared to Out. While the beginning of Out isn't exactly dark, I might even call it semi-light since I do remember laughing at some of the dialogue. But it gets dark, and there are many fights that include gruesome turns of events. So in saying that, there is a slight unevenness of tone. But in saying that as well, you might even say the tone is pretty even.

5) Backstories. I love tragic backstories because of how they build a character's character. It's one reason why I liked TR, and it's also why I like Out. There's a lot of backstory in Out. Around the volume that I'm currently at, vol 18(ish), there's so much back story that some readers find it a turn off. But I don't mind it. I mean yes, I'm curious where Tatsuya comes back in since he's been missing for many volumes, but the current focus character (who wasn't even a main one before) has such an interesting turn of events and history that links to the other characters and relates significantly for the current arc that I'm okay with the chapters (I probably can only say that now after reading the most recent chapter, but even so I'm still uneasy about what's going to happen next).

6) Speaking of turn of events. Look, after a certain, a main plot takes over the initial focus of the story. It could be a good thing, it could be a bad thing, depending on how invested you are in the story of Kilihito. Certainly, I'm okay with it at the moment, but I need to reread to be sure. But my first impressions are okay, particularly when I realise I'm happy that Tatsuya is currently avoiding ruining his parole period. At the same time it makes me wonder when and how Tatsuya returns to the story. Now, I'm okay with it at the moment because from the beginning, since Tatsuya's first encounter, there was always something big around the mystery of Kilihito. So it makes sense that eventually that story would be revealed. It was just a matter of when. And if I look at it in this way, Tatsuya has always played the role of an observer and it almost seems like Kilihito is the main character.

7) All texts have flaws. This one is no different. I can name several: inconsistency in presenting the post-juvie status of characters (these might be consistent, but lack of explanation means that it feels like Tatsuya gets more flack for whatever got him stuck in juvie compared to some other ones), these guys don't look 17 years old -.- it's distracting and misleading and yet I don't mind it (though I'm sure I also do, because I forget they're only 17), and initially at the beginning the thoughts in Tatsuya's head (they went in one direction and then did an about turn and it was super confusing, unless all guys think like this?)

8) The fight scenes are epic and drawn in an almost easily digestible way, but with worse consequences than TR. Which makes this manga more mature than TR. It goes right into the darkness--torture, assault causing serious injury, moral dilemmas over murder (or not). This manga has its twisted moments, and it doesn't always leave.

9) The cast of characters are really diverse and interesting in their own way: whether I hate them or like them, I want to know what happens to them. Not all, but some of the main ones I've met so far like Kaname, Acchan, Tatsuya, Keigo, Mutou, Kenzou, Meguro, and more.

10) I should probably also point out that there's a lot of drama happening, twists and betrayals and so on. Some more predictable than others. But it does keep one more on their toes.

11) Notable funny moments: Kaname arriving beat up and picking up a cute girl instantly even though Tatsuya and Imai had been failing all afternoon, and when Tatsuya and Kaname were butting heads on the border of a physical confrontation and Imai comes up with a plan to get them friendly again which includes making them jealous over the size of his thing and lack of manliness.

Overall, I have no idea why I'm so enraptured by this manga, other than the obvious: that I'm in the mood, and the story, art, and character are all lining up nicely. I will admit there are some really impossible moments popping up every now and then (i.e. the physique of some of these characters, what they say and do...) but it's not enough to distract me from reading this (I mean, I'm pretty tolerable but if something is stupid or contains an unbearable logic, I will give up, and so far, Out hasn't done that to me yet).

Im so invested in this delinquent manga. This is extremely vulgar in language and super violent but man its so damn funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I was so into this manga where i thought i wouldnt but the artstyle and the characters are what made me like the series. Kaname is the best dude ever and Iguchi is hot headed but he is hilarious 😂😂😂. Love the artsyle, idk its just so good! The fight scenes and the tension of the gang fight for the turf is interesting

Good manga, is published when manga is all about fighting and gang because is relevant in that time. And i grown at that time so i find myself enjoying this manga more than new manga.

Full action packed, interesting story no crybaby plot, exactly what you expect from action manga, no hot ladies, is all about friendship and gang territory

Parole officer seems to have dedicated his life to putting kids in jail so I know this is going to make me mad lol.

Art is a bit wonky at times but some panels are spectacular. I hate the way they gangsta pose though. The way the plant their feet is so silly I have to laugh.
