I bought this book last year on our annual trip to Put-in-Bay and started reading it this year right before we left. Elyse is returning to the island to settle the estate of her grandmother including the sale of the island's light house which has been in the family for over a century.
On her trip back there, she meets a handsome chef that works on Middle Bass Island and they quickly fall in love. In the meantime, Elyse is visited by the ghost of her grandmother's first love needing to know what happened the night he died so he can finally rest in peace. Many things happen throughout the book causing its conflicts and resolutions, but I don't want to give specifics to give it away.
I enjoyed that the book was set on Put-in-Bay and that I was familiar with all of the places she talked about, but the whole ghost thing felt odd to me. No one was particularly surprised by the fact that she talked to a ghost on a regular basis and some of the writing felt like it was trying to be oh so dramatic and it was all a little predictable and kind of cliche.
Reading this story I could “ feel” the island. The characters personalities, the breeze in the air, Jacob Flannery! I couldn’t put it down. The descriptions of the island drew me in and I enjoyed learning so much history there. I want to go for a visit to see what magic lies on the island myself 🩵🦋
I read this book earlier this year and absolutely loved it! As someone who has been to Put-In-Bay many times I was able to place myself there with the characters. I loved the story and the twist.
