Rating : 4.5 stars 28/2017-30/2017 : chapters 1 to 65
When you have to take a break from a great read, it proves the story is extremely powerful.
The rebirth of the malicious Empress of the military lineage follows Empress Shen as she dies and is brought back to life as her 14 years old self, Shen Miao. As an empress, she was betrayed by her scheming relatives, her son was deposed and killed, her daughter was murdered, her husband the Emperor betrayed her and cast her aside, her family was entirely killed and she had to die. As she's reborn, she decides to take revenge from the people who would wrong her in the future.
Unlike many chinese novels' protagonists, Shen Miao is not OP, greatly talented, extremely beautiful or smarter than everybody. But because she already lived through a lifetime she gained something that most people don't have : wisdom (and knowledge of the future, it helps). And because of that, it makes her an incredible powerful and womewhat scary character. She's not evil, but because she's been betrayed the worst possible ways, she will stop at pretty much nothing to get her revenge but also will try to save all of her allies, the people wronged and the unfair deaths. In her mind it's clear : only the people ill intentioned should suffer. And it's extremely well done.
The book is very slow paced and has a lot of descriptions and while it did bother me in the begining i now find it necessary. It's slow paces, there is little action but in no way it's boring. Shen Miao's charisma shines all chapters long and lots of things happen, therefore i needed to take a break to breath and release the pression. I've got a knot in my stomach reading it.
Because the antagonists are probably ones of the worst ever. They're faulty to no end and i can't help but want to scream at them. They're just plain bad. They're filled with hate, ambition and petty jealousy, it's disgusting. They don't realise their wrongdoings and manage to blame Shen Miao instead of themselves everytime. It's not about pride, it's not about trying to appear innocent, they're just completely messed up and there is not even an ounce of goodness in them. NONE. AT. ALL.
The rebirth of the malicious empress of the military lineage is really well done and i'm going through lots of emotions reading it. It's great but sad ; Shen Miao's first life ended in tragedy and she's spending the second with only revenge on her mind. I hope she will reach her happy end.
I didn't think I'd actually give this a 5★. A 4.5★, definitely but this was a surprise to me too.
When I started this novel I was scared I wouldn't like the main guy, Xie Jingxing but damn I loved him and loved him even more with Shen Miao.
There's no love at first sight, there's not any interest of good intent. In fact you'd think they'd be enemies. Slowly the careful, probing questions and answers become banters and teasing. It's a slow burn that I liked. I probably liked this more than Zui Ling Long (Drunken Exquisiteness).
The important characters are developed well and I actually care about them even the ones that don't seem to appear much. I mean I thought I wouldn't care about Emperor Yongle but damn...
The side pairing(s) are cute and heart-wrenching too. What it really means to be a wife and husband...
Villains are your villains. The smart ones, the stupid ones but their endings are definitely satisfying.
Re-read worth? Definitely, if not only those later chapters for the romance, not-so-predictable politics and relationships.
My 1st 5* for webnovel. It is seriously underrated on wattpad but not sure elsewhere. The joy that I had after reading this compared to a few of rebirth/transmigration story, definitely fulfilling. There are still a few that I read on wattpad that I rated as 4* to 5* ranking from other authors. But it should not be compared to this as those are mostly relying on Qingong, spirit energy, some other superpowers or medical ability.
This story didnt have that kind of ability but more on using analytical mental skills and brute force. One good thing about this book is that, the plot didnt dragged on and on until few thousands chapters trying to make it complicated while the plot remain unchanged except for people and ambience.
It was fast paced and the female lead whom was initially boorish changed after she faced calamity and rebirthed. I'm not saying that she was indeed stupid but she was utterly lazy and leisurely. Hated school of learning of 4 scholarly virtue. Whatever she did or learned, it was just to please one man. However, she grew out of her childish and heck care attitude towards life 'idolising' one man that caused her demise to become one of the best Empress existed later on. Her tenacity to seek repayment from those who conspired against her in her past life made her intelligent and really inspirational. 😂😂😂 We cant do that today.
She concocted everything meticulously trying not to repeat her past mistakes and to top it off, of course they will be a male lead whom are better off than the man she was chasing helping her out. At some point, her behaviour made me worry for her family cos she hid her predicaments and schemes. But knowing that they viewed her as a child and that her family was also utterly honorable and blindly devoted to the Throne, she played it out as naturally as possible in order for her 1st Shen family to see the truth of others machinations and their insincerity towards her and family.
She began her malicious stratagem towards her 2nd and 3rd Shen family then to the Prince before moving on to Great Liang through her marriage. All her abusers met with demise and it's really satisfying and I wonder what happened to her betrothal gift that she left with her Shen family at Ding.
Other than her, author also wrote about the struggles of Prince Rui before and after he returned to his country. Author wrote about the struggles of the inner palace and court. They connived viciously just to stay on top. From capital of Ding to Liang, people in court, concubines and princes contending for the Throne.
At the end of the day, I feel very fortunate that we are not living in that kind of troubled Era.
4/5 🌟 Time travel fix it rebirth. I enjoyed all the scheming and liked most of it. But there were a few chapters that dragged, a lot of excessive focus on the male lead's beauty and the last few chapters took a cheesy turn. Not gonna lie, the bickering between the two made me giggle.
The rebirth theme never crosses my mind before. I was browsing the net and found this gem accidentally. And since then, I've started reading rebirth themes, so I can make comparisons, and let me tell you, this web novel is above all.
You have a strong FL who had her memory from the past intact and will do everything to not let history repeat itself. She was witty, intelligent, and goal-oriented. This was that book not needing any romance because the FL alone was the best. But, when the ML appeared and romance started to bloom, it was even better. This was the kind of story you'll be wishing is more than 300 chapters so that you can follow the journey of both FL and ML till their death.
But, the best thing about this story, it was fast-paced. Both FL and ML never hide anything from each other except a few things which were needed for the plot to carry on. But, there was no misunderstanding. Because the FL was not your typical simpering heroine. So yeah, go and read it.
2.7.2019 - 4,75* It’s CNovel. I read so many of them that I am somehow fed up with their stereotypical ways. They are so often the same song and the only thing that’s changing are names.
It’s not true for this story. This story is brilliant. I was and am so in love with it.
It’s beautifully slowly developing story. The characters are great, the author took the time to make them real and alive. The plot is good. It’s really dark story and maybe for this reason the sweet and beatiful scenes shine so much brightly. Not mentioning that there are near zero cliches. Fundamentally yes, it’s romance. But it’s slow simmering romance which can break your heart. Most of the time we watch revenge, backstabing and such a ugly side of humanity.
I think this is one of my guilty pleasures. If I should be fair, it’s no way perfect. But so what? It was perfect for me and that’s all what really matters. The fact that amateur work (thanks for your hard work, zazajunnie!) could make me such a mess, it has to be crazy in original. ^^
Honestly, I started this novel out of boredom and I was sucked right into Shen Miao's world. I cannot emphasise on how much the book captured my time and interest - so much so that I spent one-nighters on chapters.
A word of warning: this is not a book for people who do not have the strongest of hearts. This is a tale of revenge, much like The Count of Monte Cristo. There are acts the female protagonist commits that will shock a normal person. But Shen Miao's not a normal person. She's an Empress who was reborn to take revenge on those who did her and her family evil. It really was enthralling to see the thousand steps that the main character took just to stay ahead of her enemies and this anti-heroine was someone I was rooting for.
NOTE:
I wasn't entirely happy with my experience though. I have a very healthy appreciation for translators and I am very glad that some people put their time into translating very long Chinese novels and for that, my hats off to Chubby Cheeks.
However, everytime the male lead did something vaguely romantic or his actions were deemed to be too cringy by the translators themselves, there'd be a side-note snarking at him. It was so unprofessional because goddamn, I'd be entranced reading and suddenly there's a comment that throws me off. It left me feeling disappointed and uncomfortable because I'd be enjoying myself and woot, there's a comment making fun of the male lead.
After a certain amount of these notes, I just started to feel angry because these notes were always during my favourite parts. I was begging the translator in my head, Please just let me read and enjoy the novel, your comments are just pulling me out of the headspace that I'm in. etc etc.
Most translators reveal their personal opinion in the end notes of a chapter which is a good form of ettiquette. The only reason why personal comments by the translator should be mentioned within the novel is if it is to help unravel the meaning of a particular sentence or shed enlightenment on a Chinese custom or something similar.
It's just translator ettiquette.
So again, while I appreciate the translator for undertaking The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage because it would have definitely not been easy, I do not think I would ever read another translation by the same group because (1) the quality of the translation was mediocre and I felt that I was still losing a lot of meaning behind some chapters. And (2), I do not want to see those comments again.I can fully understand them being made in a lighthearted way but please, just post them at the end of the chapter.
Overall: it is a great novel but do be prepared. The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage would really benefit from a proper translation and I would pay all my money to see that happen (otherwise, all eleven dollars in my bank account.)
2024 review: picked this up again after reading the author's other rebirth revenge novels. This is very entertaining, fast paced by cnovel standards and filled to the brim with schemes and plot twists.
I still liked this the least of the rebirth novels because the romance felt a bit like grooming though I liked the dynamic between the two when they were older. Shen Miao was 14 when she met the love interest (he was 19/20), and they got together when she was 16 and he 21/22; he's quite alpha male and a lot of his actions could be read as controlling/possessive. ---
This is a novel focused on the politics. Shen Miao has a second chance at life and in typical rebirth fashion, she's taking revenge on the people who took advantage of her. The author is good at showing Shen Miao's cleverness and subtlety. We see things from the perspective of the side characters and from there piece together her actions.
I find this to be a meticulously written novel. It feels like every detail behind every event is thought through. It's very much like watching a palace drama. The protagonist is Shen Miao but the novel feels more like a story about Shen Miao from the mouths of others via the multiple POVs. Shen Miao's personality and voice are intense. I stopped at chapter 100ish and the romance hasn't started but the Young Xie Marquis is so Gary Stu 😂 every time he makes an appearance, you're told that he is stunningly handsome, the smartest person in the whole capital etcetc...
I DNF'ed because of a few things: this novel is way too long and the pace is slow. This novel is nearing 300 chapters lol. The second is that there is the use of rape as a plot device which was quite uncomfortable to read about.
But still, quite a well-written rebirth revenge political novel.
Título: O Renascimento da Imperatriz Maliciosa de Linhagem Militar (重生之将门毒后 na língua original, The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage em inglês)
Autor: Qian Shan Cha Ke (千山茶客)
Nossa protagonista, Shen Miao, morreu.

What makes this novels so good for me is on top of the amazing plot and MC, is the romance between the MC and the ML. What I like about the Romance in this particular novel is unlike the whole "I have loved you from first sight, I am going to court you..." or the typical "Interesting...." and proceeds to court her and have a intimate relationship with the MC.. no, here we have a slowwwwww burn where they have no feelings at the start, but they start off as being wary of each other, but later they turn into allies, and then there's the tension, the teasing and the BICKERING which is sooo good. And when they realize there are feelings... it takes a lot of chapters but its worth it and their interactions are GOLDEN. Anyways like I said the MC is one of my favourite Mcs, she's usually pretty calm, super intelligent and is a true strategist and is really scheming, deep down she is kind and is not a mary sue, thanks to her past life she has some talents but she is not op.
The plot, schemes, antagonist are all top tier overall making this a beautiful novel worthy of the hype.
I can't remember when the last time I enjoyed reading a book like this. 5000 more pages and I enjoyed every single page of it. This book is a chef's kiss, a legit 5 stars. Qian Shan Cha Ke instantly become one of my favorite author.
This web novel reminds me of how much I love historical/period drama. The scenery, the scheming, the culture… *kisses fingers* so good.
“In ten of thousands of possibilities, I will only choose you. Only you.”
Not to say that it’s perfect. Lots of Chinese web novels seem to have numerous instances of misogyny, really unlikable male leads, annoying female leads, questionable consent, and more. This one has way less of those questionable aspects (except for the torture scenes here and there) and way more triumph for the main character Shen Miao. The chapters are long and there’s a gradual transition from a revenge plot after reincarnation, slow and gradual romance, and the eventual happy ending of the redeemed SM and her loved ones. While the ending felt rushed compared to the intricate plot and details of the beginning and end, it still satisfies readers with a HEA.
TRANSLATION The translator was sooo devoted in their updates, and I’m really grateful for them and the editors. The translation wasn’t perfect though and had typos, names that were wrong/misplaced, and syntax errors. It wasn’t the most difficult to read but it wasn’t super easy either. I think it may have hindered my enjoyment of the story a little but for the most part it stayed true to the Chinese and was understandable. It just took a bit to get used to.
ROMANCE When people said the romance was slow, it is slowww. Luckily the characters meet pretty early on but there’s no feelings involved. There is a slow burn as SM and Xie Jing Xing are aware of each other in the Min Qing court but not acting on anything. When the romance gets going (around ch 150), it’s adorable, sweet, and sometimes silly. Both SM and XJX complement each other in wit and scheming. They hold no prisoners and really eliminate the weeds by the roots (aka gets rid of all the antagonists cleanly). They’re a really well matched couple and I love how XJX is aware of his feelings first/acts on it while SM is more hesitant to give her love to someone again. In her last life she had a loveless marriage and horrible husband so it makes sense that she gets to rediscover the beauty of romance with the ever caring XJX. Sooo sweet.
INCONSISTENCIES This may be because the series is released as a web novel (so by chapter I believe?), but there were small details that were inconsistent or not followed through with. SM’s age was missing a few years based on the travel time and small time skip that the author notes. Some plot details are never continued/followed up which makes me feel as if the whole scene was unnecessary. It didn’t hinder my read much but definitely made the story less than perfect.
CHARACTERS SM is a great character you root for from beginning to end. In her past life, she was a hard working empress but was betrayed by her extended family, husband, and his concubine. Once she died by the white silk cloth in the beginning of the story, she wakes up and finds herself in her 14 year old self with the chance to redo the future. She takes advantage of this opportunity by exacting revenge and saving her loved ones that were schemed against in her past life. While she seems cold at first (as she has a one track mind for revenge), she gradually opens up. It’s a slow transition but very meaningful.
XJX is a pretty stereotypical love interest in that he’s pretty unbeatable, super rich, super skilled in combat, super smart, has great resources, and is beautiful. (Seriously, the author LOVES to write exaggerating descriptions of his beauty. Like chill sis.) But I like his character in the end bc he treats SM like the empress she is and is very caring despite a rogue-ish and cunning exterior. He’s not someone I would fawn over but I ship him and SM a lot.
The other side characters range from silly and fun family members to wicked and deceiving antagonists. There’s a whole range and while the antagonists seem a bit antagonist, their deviousness matches the intricate court politics of the historical time period. It do be tough out there as a concubine/illegitimate child.
OVERALL This seems to be a fan favorite of reincarnation in the world of Chinese web novels and I’m so lucky to have started with it. The MCs are lovable while they go through their plans of revenge and the antagonists are hatable and get what they deserve. I loved the explanation for the MC’s reincarnation and thought it fit the story perfectly. Definitely a recommendation for historical drama lovers.
Trigger Warnings: abuse of all kinds, mention of torture (rape, beastiality, assault, miscarriage, cutting off limbs, and more), death of loved ones in the past, war/invasions, blood and violence
I've had this bookmarked since a couple of months and finally picked it up.
Now I don't even know where to begin, but one thing I'd like to applaud the author for is that inspite of this being a lengthy book with many, many sub-plots, there were zero loopholes. Zero.
How often does that happen in webnovels?
After finishing a CN novel, most of the time, I'm left pondering over the issues or characters that the authors' forget about as the story progresses, but this has left me elated.
Everything fit in perfectly.
I admit that my mind was a mess when I opened page one of this after looking at so many unfamiliar Chinese words but oh my, I'm so glad I went ahead with this. After a few chapters, the words become familiar so don't let that stop you from reading this.
I diligently binge-read this webnovel from past three days and was eager to finish it and know all the secrets that the plot holds. But now feel empty that such a good book has already come to an end. (╥﹏╥)
This book definitely stands right next to Chongfei Manual for me and I'm definitely coming back for a re-read. I loved each and every character here. Even the antagonists were portrayed really well by the author, and you can't help getting attached to the side characters too!
Shen Miao, the Di daughter of military lineage of Shen family is initially foolishly in love with Prince Ding, so much so that, the whole nobility and the city knew about it and often teased her. Prince Ding eventually marries her and couple of dramas later, he sacrifices Shen Miao to another country for five years in order to maintain peace and stability in their country, thus separating her from their children.
When she comes back, surprise, surprise; Prince Ding has a new woman by his side and mercilessly discards his two children before ultimately discarding her, his heartbroken Empress as well.
Now having a chance at rebirth, Shen Miao has a chance to turn the tables and make sure that the ball is in her court. She plots revenge against all those people who harmed her Shen family as well as her children, including Prince Ding.
And the romance blooms gradually when Shen Miao and Xie Jing Xing work together.
Unlike most books, Shen Miao stays true to her character of being merciless until the end, and I liked that fact very much. She's not a damsel in distress, instead is brilliant and can handle her own issues.
But for the purpose of romance, the author balanced the plot and gave the readers just enough tid-bits between FL and ML that'll make you squeal and fan-girl.
I lived for those little moments in between where Shen Miao let down her hard shell and opened her heart only to Xie Jing Xing.
And the ML too is neither "cold-hearted" or "scholarly", he's also not a womanizer. You have to read the story to understand his character but he remains supportive and devoted only to the FL throughout the read.
I cried at the bitter-sweet ending of the ML's brother, the Emperor and his Empress.
Special mention to "Jiao Jiao", the adorable white tiger named in honour of FL by Little Marquess Xie.
There's not a page of this book that I skipped and I totally recommend this! (~ ̄³ ̄)~

// I read the translated version of this book.//
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was my first novel by this author and she captivated me from the very beginning. It was such an exciting read, the way the author writes politics and the complexity of the revenge plot keep me up all night just to finish this. Shen Miao is a captivating protagonist and I do hope we get a c-drama adapted from this novel too.
Not sure where the page count came from, but I think it's probably longer than 3k pages. =P I read rather fast and it took me over 3 days to complete.
Quote from story: In ten of thousands of possibilities, I will only choose you. Only you.
I'm enjoying the utterly ridiculous titles for the Asian light novels. Thus far, the darker and wacky titles have lead to very satisfying reads. The overall plot, characters and setting were great! There are rough transitions and dangling plot threads, but I really enjoyed the way the major points were established and completed.
It was nice to have a male lead that fell in love with the female lead. That both of them were driven characters that tried their best to stay true to their ideals. It was fun to have smart and somewhat ruthless couple in the lead.
Two thumbs up for a slow burn romance full of intrigue and wire-fu action. =D
He was one who never believed in supernatural things. He did not believe in supernatural things but he believed in Shen Miao
I think that after reading this novel, all other cnovels that I will read in the future will pale in comparison.
Wow, just wow! How did I survive the long chapters? And how did a cnovel (and translated at that) capture my heart?
Simple: Shen Miao and Xie Jing Xing.
I have watched quite a few/lot chinese historicals and I definitely found them to my liking (except when the males had to sport the bald head, I can’t get over that), so suffice it to say that I was quite excited when I picked this one up. I was even debating between this and another novel but I’m glad I picked this one up.
Excited I was, but did I dare to raise my expectations? Frankly, no. I have read a few cnovels before but even if the story is promising at first, the story would almost always take a turn for the worse (or rather there will be scenarios that were unbelievable that would take my fondness for the book away). Thank the heavens, this book did not disappoint me, hell, it has even exceeded all my expectations!
I remember watching Princess Wei Young but stopped more than halfway because the plot became boring - i.e. WeiYoung was untouchable and there was no sense of excitement knowing that she will always get her way in the end, the only redeeming quality of it is the leads chemistry (no wonder they got married irl).
Surprisingly, TRotMEoML’s main character is almost similar to WeiYoung (being the invisible one), however I like Shen Miao better. Or is it because I read this and got myself more invested and knowledgeable of its world? No matter the case, even if Shen Miao’s victory is almost always assured, I did not get bored. I even found myself eagerly reading so that I can know more. Know more about Shen Miao’s revenge and her love line with Xie Jing Xing.
”That Taoist Priest did not speak correctly.”
Shen Miao was doubtful, “What?”
“In ten of thousands of possibilities, I will only choose you.”
Where can I find a man like XJX? If in the modern world, Xiao Nai has captured my heart, in ancient Liang, XJX has stolen it. Never mind him being omnipotent, it is one of the reasons why I like him. He isn’t good but if there is one thing that he’s good at, it is his undying love for Jiao Jiao.
There were quite a few scenes where I teared up and I never imagined that I will do so. Truly, this novel gave me a rollercoaster ride and I hope you’ll read it too.
I am almost too afraid to pick up another cnovel, for fear that I will always compare and find them lacking. I hope this can be turned into a drama :)
. The Rebirth of The Malicious Empress of Military Lineage adalah novel china (terjemahan) kedua yang kutamatkan setelah Stunning Edge. Kedua novel ini sama-sama bertema time travel/transmigration.
The Rebirth of The Malicious Empress of Military Lineage menceritakan tentang seorang putri jenderal militer bernama Shen Miao yang mengalami "kelahiran kembali".
Jalan ceritanya keren sekali!!

First off, I am super biased because I love revenge stories. Almost all my favorite novels have some sort of revenge theme in them. I can’t help it. And i can’t help but love this book as well. This has the sweetest revenge ever.
The heroine is such a ruthless, cruel badass. She gets a second chance at life, and wakes up at the time when she is 14 years old and the trouble is just about to begin. But because she’s already lived her past life, she is now a wise old woman deep inside, she knows what is going to happen next, who’s good and who’s bad, and this time her enemies are going down. I love her evil plots and machinations. She’s truly malicious, and she even gloats or cruelly smiles when her enemies are backed into a corner. I love how anyone who even dares to scheme against her, ends up with a backfire.
There is also a slow burn romance here. The leading man is perfect. Too perfect actually. Think of all the good traits an alphahole can possibly have and that’s the hero. But don’t worry though, this isn’t a typical love a first sight romance. It’s more of a mutual respect to allies to romance kind of slow development, which I really really enjoyed.
Translation quality by chubbycheeksthoughts is just so-so. I’ve read better translations and I’ve also read and enjoyed worse translations. There were a lot of grammatical mistakes all throughout. It didn’t prevent me from really enjoying the book and having it reach favorite status though. So a big thank you to chubbycheeksthoughts for taking the time and effort into translating this masterpiece. Head over to chubbycheeksthoughts.com to read this book.
This was an amazing novel. It captured my attention from beginning to end with the scheming, romance, jealousy, and characters.
I love how the female lead is strong, smart, and reliant in herself, even until the end. Many of these novels, after pairing up with the strong male, the female just relies in their partner to do everything. However, in this novel, even though he does end up helping her out, she continues to make her own contributions and never gets complacent. That's how a good relationship should work - both people should bring something substantial to the table, not just their beauty and powerless sincerity.
There are some plot holes, but they didn't detract from the overall flow of the novel.
I guess the one main downside of this novel is how flowery the descriptions of the leads' beauty is. I might not have noticed, but the translators got visibly frustrated with it, which was hilarious, and I also started finding it a bit over the top towards the end. A description of beauty is nice for helping readers visualize the character, but it's not like we can see them no matter how flowery the description, and even if we could, what is the point of a beautiful lead? Can't ugly people be good as well?
What can I say? This story just delights me. I love a revenge story with a fiery, ruthless, scheming female lead who has a brilliant mind, a hardened but steadfast heart, and one heck of a backbone.
Being trasported and reborn to her 14-year-old self, she did have the advantage of knowing the events that will unfold in the future. But this actually makes it all the more exciting, making me anticipate what she'd do next and how things would play out and change everybody's fate. I love how when she says she'll exact revenge, she means business; no half-assed actions. We get a vicious huntress out for the kill. The board is set, with meticulously planned schemes and ruthless execution.
Having a swoony male lead who is just as ruthless as our female lead (with him being head over heels in love with our empress, and shamelessly so) is a big fat bonus. Also, the chemistry and the cuteness is just... melty.
A novel with a very strong beginning, a strong middle, a weaker ending but overall, still an amazing read. To this day, Malicious Empress remains one of my favorite novels and I reread it time and time again.
Female Lead - Shen Miao
I absolutely love Shen Miao. She's smart, she's resourceful, and she knows her limits. She maximizes what she does have and uses everything—no matter how useless it may appear—to her advantage. Counterschemes from Shen Miao are top-notch, hitting all my kinks, including ones I didn't know existed.
Shen Miao sets up her schemes several steps in advance. For most rebirth and revenge novels, I am used to reading female leads setting up a trap to counter the current scheme. But not Shen Miao. Oh no. She sets up a trap, sets up a trap, sets up another trap and you won't see them in play until two schemes later. Her schemes are wonderfully thought out and executed with such precision that probably has a lot to do with plot-armor but I don't care. I love it.
I love her.
Obviously, she has her flaws. She's a bit cold. Definitely stubborn. Her ego isn't small by any means. She's also not very communicative. However, as her past is revealed, I can understand why she is the way she is. She handles everything and everyone as Empress Shen, a woman who has not only been betrayed by her lover, but also more-or-less caused the downfall of her family. She may be a fourteen-year-old physically but she is a grown woman and acts as such.
Which is why, I think Xie Jing Xing is a perfect counterpart for her.
Male Lead - Xie Jing Xing
Xie Jing Xing is a rebellious youth with a mysterious past and does not follow societal norms and because of that, Shen Miao does not know how to respond to him. They live in an environment where insults are done using word-play, hidden in meaning you have to find between flowery words. Nothing is ever explicitly stated so Shen Miao only knows how to respond in kind. So, when Xie Jing Xing can just shamelessly tease her with blunt words and even action, it's no wonder she does not know how to respond.
She may act like Empress Shen in front of everyone else, but in front of him, she is Shen Miao. And I am here for it. He forces the human side of her out and readers get to see her flustered and speechless; that she is not only a cold, perfection of an empress.
Xie Jing Xing may be too over-powered, and too perfect but I have always thought of Malicious Empress as Shen Miao's story. It's her thoughts, her lives, her development while everyone is secondary and yes, that includes the male lead. So that's why I don't really mind the lack of development when it comes to his character. However, that is not to say that Xie Jing Xing does not have depth. Because he does (Aunt Rong!).
Also, a lot of people seem to disdain the long-winded descriptions of Xie Jing Xing's handsome appearance whenever he comes on screen. While I somewhat agree, I also strongly believe it's an inside joke of sorts. But no, really. I've actually seen people very strongly argue that these descriptions not only ruined the character but the entire novel. And I'm just confused. Like, why are you taking it so seriously?
Romance
Okay, one more thing that I really have to give kudos to is the romance. The romance. I absolutely love the way the romance is handled, especially considering the fact that romance is not this novel's main genre. Shen Miao and Xie Jing Xing start off as... not exactly enemies but definitely not allies either. But as you continue to read, you can understand how they go from not-allies to allies to definitely allies and so on. You understand why they begin to trust one another and why they began to depend on each other. While they did not start off going out of their way to help one another, they still ended up present during each other's weak moments.
Their love and connection are beyond the words one can read in the novel; there will never be an exact moment where you read a sentence and think, "Ah, this is where s/he fell in love." Instead, you have to sit back and think about the story and their interaction and realize that they've probably been slowly falling in love with each other this entire time.
I just finished and loved Greetings Ninth Uncle when I came across this novel, which has a similar premise, so I decided to give it a shot.
The story follows Shen Miao, the female lead, who was foolish and gave all of her love to the wrong man in her past life. Even though she eventually became Empress, her husband the Emperor didn't love her at all and instead favored another consort. Because of the lack of feelings towards her and the favored consort's scheming, he pushed both of their children to death and made SM commit suicide afterwards. Luckily SM got another chance at life, and she was reborn back into her 14 year old body, right before she did something foolish to force the 9th prince to marry her. This time, she's determined to protect her Shen family (but only her household, the others are all scum) and take revenge on everyone who wrong her in her past life.
The story starts out quite slowly. As can be imagined, there are a lot of characters even just in the Shen household and it takes a while for the author to explain who everyone is and why they're important to the story. The author also needs to set the background and establish what an idiotic lovestruck reputation Shen Miao has at school and among higher society in general so that her change in temperament and actions has a greater impact.
Once the story gets rolling and we see SM's schemes and counter-schemes against her family come to fruition, it gets much more interesting. The romance moves very slowly though. Even after the ML Xie Jingxing starts taking an interest in her, initially he's just intrigue in her deep schemes and her unfathomable knowledge, and it's not till later that all the flirting starts and much later when the feelings becomes mutual.
I read translations by Chubby Cheeks, which were riddled with grammatical and spelling errors but still readable.
**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**
The story can roughly be divided into three arcs: the first one follows Shen Miao's initial revenge on the Shen family (mostly against the Second Household) up until her family's move to join her maternal Luo family, the second one takes place two years after when the Shen family moves back to the Ding capital again, and the third and final arc follows Shen Miao's move to the Great Liang after marrying XJX and her dealings with a new set of characters there. My favorites were the first two arcs, as SM does a great job of figuring out her family's schemes and countering them every single time, but when she goes to Great Liang in the last arc, she's in a new environment and the story is driven more by larger political changes rather than small schemes.
I have some mixed feelings about this book. The story was engaging for the most part until the last 10-20%, where things started dragging with side characters I didn't care about. I skipped all the scenes between the Great Liang's Emperor and Empress as well as Luo Tan and the physicial Gao Yang. Also, while it was very satisfying to watch Shen Miao get slowly achieve her revenge, I didn't like how there was a very clear cut line drawn between the "good" and the "bad" characters. All of the bad guys were completely ruthless and had no bottom line.
For example, I couldn't believe it when SM's second aunt made plans to let her get raped by Prince Yu, someone with an unsavory and licentious reputation known for playing hard with women and sometimes getting them killed. It's really bad to wish that on anyone, much less someone from your own family. Or how her family was planning to exchange brides and marry SM off to a bad family with a cut-sleeve son while her half-sister would benefit from a marriage to the son of a prestigious family. Or how her older half-brother killed her own sister in jail so that she wouldn't block his career from advancing. It was really too much. The author made her whole Second and Third families into a bunch of scumbags.
The one thing the author never explained was what XJX and Gao Yang found in the hidden room of Prince Yu's estate. I don't know if she forgot about it or what, but I kept expecting that to come up later and she just never went back to it.
Some of my favorite moments:
When SM orchestrates it so that Shen Qing needs to get checked by a doctor and is revealed to be pregnant with Prince Yu's child in the middle of the banquet with the whole Imperial family present
When SM switches Chang Zai Qing's target from her father to her uncle instead, and her aunt didn't even notice when her own man was getting seduced under her own nose
The paragraph-long descriptions of both the ML and FL absolutely killed me though. Half of it didn't even make sense XP
The purple clad youth reached out to remove the mask on his face.
Eyebrows as sharp as swords, eyes that were filled with affection, brave sharp nose and moist lips. It was as if one was a beautiful youth yesterday, but after two years this was truly a handsome and beautiful man. The smile on the ends of his lips was as usual filled with slightly ridicule and unruliness, and there was no longer a brassy youthfulness in his eyes.
That was a type that made one’s heart palpitate deeply, as if it was dark at night, beautiful because of the stars, but terrifying due to the darkness. He was filled with a noble, conceited and elegant air, that reached the pinnacle after two years, and each movement and action was filled with inherent arrogance. The pure moon was usually cold and indifferent, but was as bright as the scorching sun now.
Or this looong description of SM:
In front of the window there sat a young female, she was wearing a deep black silk clothes with a purple tipped skirt. It was an entire body of dark colours, it did not look old-fashioned at all but instead made her skin fair and translucent like jade. The light rain was falling in front of the window and when she heard the sounds, she slightly raised her head, revealing a pretty and delicate face.
Black pupils, graceful brows, pearly teeth and pomegranate lips which were intoxicating like a new moon. It was strange to say that this young female’s appearance was very delicate, as if it was the morning glow of the snow that makes one feel pity, but her warm and smooth hair had an extreme beauty feeling. It was as if she was one who could withstand a great magnanimity. With such a calm bearing, there seemed to be a very different hard look to it, making her look seemingly weak but also a strong person.
She tilted her head and slightly smiled as her eyes moved, this made the other person’s heart tremble, as if this casual smile of hers made this simple study into a jade Palace, and she was a noble sitting at the highest position, looking down faintly at the crowd.
