Two young rebel mages hold the future of the world in their hands. Together, they are all that is keeping the invading Rahain from overwhelming the empire.
As the Archmages renew their assault upon the world, can the Soulwitch and the Stormwitch step up to fill the gap in the empire's defences, or will their own ambitions and lust for power send them on a different course?
Burdened by grief and guilt, Karalyn and Lennox retreat from the war, making their separate ways to the remotest corner of the world. When they meet, a chain of events is set off that quickly moves out of their control, threatening not only their lives, but the future of the Magelands.

About Me
I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

I am greatly enjoying this series - and it seems to be complete! Good characters and plots. I do have a major gripe with the series though and it it the CONSTANT reference to smoking. Hardly a page goes by without someone lighting up and the author is quite happy to allow his very young characters 13 to 14 to smoke with impunity. I appreciate one of the major themes is the use of different types of “weed” but the systematic normalisation, indeed glorification of smoking in general is very striking and does not sit easily with me especially as this type of fiction is often read by impressionable young adults. If you can ignore this (and I am old enough not to swayed by it - merely bemused), then a great story. Also great to see Scottish dialogue properly spoken by the characters. It was easy to see before I confirmed it that the author was either Scottish or had strong Scottish connections.
Great story arc and I’ll leave others to judge if I’m being prissy about the smoking.
Soulwitch Rises is Book 7 in Christopher Mitchell's Magelands Epic. This book does not stand alone by itself. You will be lost trying to jump into this series here so I would highly recommend going to the beginning and reading these books in order. The world created in this series is unique and complex, you need an understanding as a whole to get the entire experience. When you're getting it everything comes to life around you. You can almost see the world come to life around you. The characters continue to evolve as this series goes on. Who you may have one time looked at as a friend or a story hero may now be more likely a villain. Things are never quite what they seem in the Magelands and you're never sure what path you are travelling along until you reach your destination.
If you have read other books in this series you will not be disappointed with this. I continue to be amazed at the depth and intricacy of Christopher Mitchell's imagination. If you haven't been reading this series then what's stopping you? This is the next great fantasy epic.
I received an advanced copy of this story from the author and am leaving a voluntary and honest review.
Keir and Thorn join forces in their attempt to annihilate the enemy. They are quite enamored with themselves and each other and have to face reality when they get their butts kicked by the mages. They continue to fight on, despite these setbacks. Nyane has to endure the wrath of Bridget when she sides with these two and doesn't arrest them for insubordination. Her affair with Dean is irreparably damaged.
Karalyn also pisses Bridget off when she doesn't restore all of Belinda's powers. She dreams of escaping the turmoil with Lennox, this time pissing off Daphne. Daphne probably would have been better off leaving motherhood to others. She is fierce in her love and defense of her children but doesn't have much in the way of warm and fuzzy encouragement for them.
Man oh man is Cain a stinker or what?
Kudos to Carrie for her never ending devotion. She doesn't get a whole lot of mention but is a rock.
More emotional stuff going on in the Magelands and it’s really getting personal for the Holdfasts.
My favourite character is Karalyn. She longs for a simple and peaceful life however her dream powers and family are too great to allow her own dreams to come true.
Cannot wait to read the conclusion of this thrilling epic and also the forthcoming Eternal Siege. Roll on August!
Without doubt one of the best tales I have ever read. Getting close to the end, unfortunately, I have enjoyed every one of these books and am looking forward to the denouement. I like the new characters they add depth and colour and allow new twists, turns and sub-plots.
An amazing read that kept me captivated from the first to the last page. The story is amazing with epic scenes. This had me on the edge of my seat. I definitely recommend this read. I could not put this read down. Shauna Joesten
Fabulous characters and tons of action with twists and turns. Keir seems to be maturing and coming i to his powers in this book. Several story lines come together to make this book great. I hope this series continues.
