It's summer, and through sheer determination, Nobuko's achieved a small miracle: she can finally have a normal conversation with her crush. She hopes things can continue on like this forever, but her junior coworker Abe-san imparts a warning about trying to "keep things the same" when it comes to love. Could this fellow side character's love story be a glimpse into Nobuko's future?
This is really so cute!! I'm dying for this couple to be together officially! Love that Irie's finally coming to terms with his feelings and he knew that he shouldn't keep asking her out for a date or something without actually clearing his intentions.
I swear, when was the last time I left it on my bookshelf unfinished? It's really something, albeit kinda ordinary (lol, the title's saying a lot about it,) and maybe draggy at times, but it's still cute and I still like it!
This story makes me feel so happy and full of wonder. As if I'm in there shoes too, especially I'm like them. All this characters and especially the main characters are amazing. The slow build relationship is something i am liking about this story. Will go to volume 4 soon.😊
They are both trying so hard! The shyness is excruciating to watch - I mean, I get it, but still. I am curious as to what the next step will be and who will be the one to initiate it. There are 14 volumes (so far?), and they are taking baby steps, but they are moving. I would be most disappointed if some stupid misunderstanding came between them and they had to start over again.
So cute! I love the budding relationship between Nobuko and Irie and how they're slowly coming out of their shells. This one left off with a cliffhanger so I'll be diving into the next one soon.
Absolutely adorable slice-of-life. The characters feel so real. If you’re looking for drama, this isn’t the manga for you. This is 100% sweet, feel-good bliss. 🥰
Things are dragging a little in this series, but I do adore its simplicity and the relatable characters. It’s just really cute and satisfying to me to watch two introverted characters fall in love with each other and try to build a lasting relationship. There are snags along the way, of course, since the characters are so shy with one another — but I continue to find it endearing instead of boring.
Really enjoy the dual pov from his/her perspectives! And it feels like they're starting to make progress 😌
I know this manga is more on the slow-side, but it feels really comforting to read! And there are also a ton of cute moments! (Like their trip to the zoo, or when he remembers their first meeting etc)
Overall, loving this series! And with that cliff-hangar 👀 now I need to know what happens next
It is indeed feels like a side story, nothing unexceptional but still cute and interesting to read. I mean, this is more reading characters' story instead of the actual and whole story. The drawing style is too cute 🥰 this one captured even the little details around them, if you paid attention and enjoy it then maybe you can enjoy this too. If you're being impatient and didn't much paid attention to it you might find this boring 😂 so make sure you read this when you're in a good mood haha
These are just delightful. I love the relationships between the characters and how supportive the friends, who are all coworkers, are. Any teasing is friendly and well meant. Mostly they are just super supportive and encouraging. This is not my experience with people who are super quiet and shy in American culture, in general, and I don’t know enough of Japanese culture and work relationship traditions to know if the difference is cultural or is just the individual characters of this specific group of coworkers. I have been where Tanaka is in the beginning of this volume, and I have had a variation of Abe’s experience and I really loved what Abe did for Tanaka as a result of her experience. Also, and I’ll have to mark this for spoilers, I adored that they basically went on a date to discuss where they would go on their next date and neither of them seemed to realize it. This is the sweetest story!

There’s some distractingly bad grammar in this book, yowza. Beyond that, the story of our introverted couple continues (and I do like that they’re both incredibly shy, it‘s a nice change in dynamics). Their relationship is pretty charming, much like the book, but as slow as it was before it is positively glacial now.
This series is pretty disposable for me - it’s a light read where I don’t expect much, but if it doesn’t pick up the pace a bit it’ll be ten volumes before anybody confesses, twenty-five before they hug, and thirty-seven before they kiss.
A series with a high level of romantic tension can get away with that, but, with its low-watt smoulder, this series cannot. I’m not saying this should be a bodice-ripper, but introversion or no, you can’t keep hammering the same variations on story beats over and over and hope to hold the audience’s interest.
Some manga, you feel like they try to cram in every possible thing they can think of, plus their gramma. Like Love Hina. Don't get me wrong that's a fantastic series, a true classic. But it's nice to read a story with a much slower pace, slower tempo. I'm sure some think it just drags on... but I rather enjoy it. Two introverts, both timid & shy on top of that, well why can't they take things at a pace they like? Who says every rom-com has to be frantic? I think in the long run, the slow pace they are both using will work out good for them. Personally, I wouldn't take things this slowly, but I've certainly never been accused of being introverted or shy. Art, plain, yet very fitting. Dialogue, fitting. Characters, believable, likeable, adorable.
I enjoyed reading volume 3! I got to know more about Nobuko’s friend, Abe and her past love, and more of Iris’s thoughts on romance.
What I found interesting was that although Nobuko is basically one of the main characters in this side character story, there are other side characters within the manga when you learn of their past love encounters.
In this volume, Abe says, “then if things stay the way they are…that future you’re wishing for won’t happen.” She was speaking from experience and I know that what she went through, might have caused some feelings of regret or heartbreak. It’s also something I resonate with.
I felt sad for her but I hope she’ll find mutual love that give her a lot of happiness!
Ahh this is such a feel-good and lighthearted shoujo! It reminds of a time when I used to read such slow-burn and endearing shoujo mangas when I was younger maybe that’s why I enjoy it so much. In this third volume, Irie and Tanaka go on their second date at the zoo and we’re finally inching towards confession time! The character profession is going well and I can’t wait to read the fourth volume.
A Side Characters Love Story Vol. 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 158 Pages
NOT THE FREAKING CLIFFHANGER!!! This series definitely has me hooked. I felt like this book was a lot of trying to build up the courage to speak your truth and while I love the slow burn , I just want them to TELL EACH OTHER HOW THEY FEEL.

Things are really moving forward in small steps but I enjoy seeing the characters really work through their feelings. Also, the real background characters know more than they let on I bet… they seem able to read people well so I think they’re stepping back to let Irie and Nobuko work things out at their own pace.
This artist/author is slick! Watch the background of the panels. They sneak in cute/funny things pretty often. I guffaw at least once a volume, and I'm probably missing some still.
This is just so cute. The sweetest and the awkward that these two have with each other. I love how they went to the zoo and wasn't sure how fast they should go or not. How they don't know how to act yet then both like each other. It's just so sweet. I can't wait to read more from this series.
Author really has a way of showing the characters hesitation and thoughts on why sometimes it is more comfortable to maintain a level of interaction with the opposite sex that's relatable to others and sheds a light to others who haven't been in the characters shoes.
