Breaking Smart Archives: Selected Newsletters, 2015-19

Rate this book
This is a volume of 32 selected and sequenced newsletter issues from over 140 by Venkatesh Rao, published on the Breaking Smart email list between 2015 and 2019. For those not familiar with Breaking Smart, it is an ongoing project devoted broadly to “seeking serendipity through technology.” It began life in 2015 as an online collection of essays, accompanied by a workshop, on how software is eating the world. It then morphed into a free email newsletter featuring wide-ranging technology-themed commentary. In 2020, it morphed yet again, this time into a subscription newsletter, podcast, and serialization venue for Venkatesh Rao's larger-scope nonfiction projects. You can explore the project at breakingsmart.com

"Commitment is not the absence of distractions, but the presence of stabilized focus. Focus is a positively defined condition, like 'balance' on a bicycle, not merely insensitivity to things arbitrarily labeled 'distraction.' Do you stay on your bicycle because there are no wind gusts, no cracks on the pavement, no obstacles, no turns, no Zuck trying to push you off? Or because you've learned to balance?"

Marc Andreessen called Venkatesh one of the smartest and instinctually lateral thinking individuals he's ever met after Balaji and Thiel. And the hype is warranted
