Territorial growth. Ancient conspiracies. The apocalypse is getting worse.
Rockland Barkclay was saved and pulled into an alternate realm moments before his death. He thought that sacrificing himself would save the Grotto and give them a chance to prosper. He wasn’t expecting to open his eyes, reborn on the altar.
Gaia has ordered the Golems to protect humanity, but their ‘protection’ against the environment is sending humanity to the brink of starvation. Rocky needs to find his family, and his only option is to search through survivors one-by-one. Every person saved increases the population of the Grotto, but is also another mouth to feed.
After saving thousands and not finding a single familiar face, new intelligence reaches the Grotto: sending Rocky against a challenge that even the King of Apes couldn’t overcome.
Rockland is such a little bitch. Why Sela likes him is such a mystery to me. She's there for him, working alongside him and helping him to lead the people... and all he does is get angry and jealous at her for it. Little bitch.
I hope he changes for the better in the next book otherwise I'm going to have to quit this series.
Also, Sela freaking rocks my socks!!

I enjoyed the first 2 books of this series. Did it have flaws? Sure but it was exciting and the characters actions made sense and had growth.
Then comes this one. The author starts by taking away the main characters rage class and has the mc acknowledge his anger and that be needs to be a better leader. Which SHOULD be a sign the MC is going to change and improve himself over the course of the book.
Instead he gets more angry than ever before over absolutely ridiculous things and acts like a child when his friend gets more attention than him.
It was so ridiculous, I thought he HAD to be under someones influence. Nope! He is just a completely unhinged moron for plot convince. Devoid of all reason that thinks the worst of everyone around him constantly.
Ryan DeBruyn continues a great story in this, his third book in the Ether Collapse series. Everything that we enjoyed from the first two books, we get more of. More Ottawa Knights, more remnants of humanity being saved, more development of Gaia and a great world building.
While the settlement building is not present this time around, we do get quite a bit of adventuring and a broader view of the world post Collapse (especially enjoy Toronto and New York).
Almost quit reading several times, did eventually finish but it was difficult to not just move on to something else, like the idea but the mc is so terrible it ruins the whole story, whiny, angry, stupid, weak, basically zero redeeming qualities, good ideas but now have no further interest in the storyline because there's nothing positive or relatable about the main character.
I get it, he needs to overcome something for character development. But the entire book is just him whining about not feeling like a leader, not acting like a leader, not having as powerful skills as his friends, and just feeling inadequate. He doesn't overcome it by the end of the book either. This entire book is just a pity party for Rockland and for the first time I find myself 3 books into a series with no interest in the 4th.
Rocky felt much more unstable in this one and kinda petulant, and it didnt feel like a build up. Still a great read but i hope the emotional turmoil feels more natural in book 4 the the switch flipped feeling in thisone.
Another great book by Ryan DeBruyn, talk about a cliffhanger! The writing keeps getting better and I'm loving the story, even if I want to strangle Rocky sometimes (most time). So many questions, can't wait for the next one!
I am very much enjoying this series of books. The conflict pushes itself forward and our cast of characters fight both their enemies and their own long list of flaws. It is a great sign with a book can engage me so much that I want to shout at the characters to make better choices. DeBruyn does a great job of giving us imperfect heroes to cheer on without compromising the joy of a good fantasy.
Great third installment of the series. Excellent interpersonal relationships along with inner character problems that make this story relatable. The new changes concerning the MC with the many problems the Grotto and he personally face is interesting and has the makings of a great fourth book as well. Not much story development along the lines of the bigger picture but this books ties up the main theme of the first two books. Looking forward to the next one!
Another enjoyable book, so fun twists and good news gained but repercussions are still there. I always feeling more should be done but then realize alot was done i just read theough it so fast. Im glad this 3rd book came faster than book 2 and i hope to see book 4 in the fall sometime fingers crossed and keep up the good story
This was an excellent book, I have really enjoyed the story so far and this book continues to deliver. Good mix of story and action as well as a good use of a LITRPG that adds to the immersion of the story. Can’t wait for the next one!
I liked the first two books. This one was pretty weak. The main character is basically an idiot with the impulse control of a 12 year old. He focuses way too much on things that don't matter. Additionally, it's not clear why he lost his class and why he's stuck with a useless class. I really hope the next one is better.
Plot: This was basically a book of rescuing others. Little bit of crafting.
Characters: The Mc was not acting rational a lot in this book. He allowed his anger to cloud his judgment to often and for me it took away from the story. 5/10
So the story continued with the same vibe as the other two books and that was great. The ending felt more like he wasnt sure where to stop and just picked a really bad spot. That moved the entire series from looking forward to the next book into the if I get bored enough I might pick it up pile for me.
Ok, I’d say this one was a bit of a notch below the first two, but because there was a lot of set-up and new things happening that could make the next book even better, I’ll leave it be. I’m just gonna make a couple points, since if you’re on the third book of the series, you know the score!
Everyone is in a weird emotional state in this book, which makes sense. Everyone died and got questioned on a metaphysical level by a dude with a rabbit hat, Rocky obviously lost his special class and one of his tangible connections to Azoth and can’t speak to him anymore (this is so sad guys!), and is starting to chafe with Sela because he wants to take a more active role in leading and she’s getting in his way of that, whether she knows it or not. Which all makes sense to me. Yeah, he’s a seething ball of anger half the time, which is a drag, but that has been kinda building for a while, and I have a feeling something is gonna happen with that in the next book. Personally, I hope he rises up to the challenge and becomes a better leader. Sela is a useful advisor, but she isn’t from this age and I think she’s a little too ruthless to be the charismatic leader people need.
But it brings us to the thing that has been annoying me since book one. Sela’s character is... fractured? Idk. She has 2 modes: strong commander/leader with a side helping of condescension or she’s crying and seeming to come off as guilt-tripping Rocky. I don’t think there’s much in between (except when she’s being flirty, I suppose). I’m all for strong men and women to show their tears, but I feel like Sela goes straight to tears whenever she is emotionally challenged. That kinda made sense in the first book (new, different world), and in the second book a little too (still questioning her past and whether her family pretty much lied to her for her entire life and allowed her to die). That’s some heavy stuff. But the falling to pieces bit is starting to get repetitive, and it doesn’t make sense overall with what I get from her as a character, and her POV chapters actually make it weirder. It’s almost like the woman doesn’t understand emotions very well. Aaaaanyway. Sorry about the rant. Just had to get that off my chest.

Earthdom is the third book in the Ether Collapse series by Ryan Debruyn.
All of the relationship stuff between Rocky and Sela, that basically amounted to some really annoying emotionally charged heated arguments and baseless personal attacks was poorly done. This book dropped grades below the other two previous books in the series.
My detractions with this continuation in the Ether Collaose series is further compounded by the byplay with Amelia. Where they find out her race, and go stupid about it. The moments where everyone fights about the knowledge not being shared. Which registers as the author arbitrarily holding off on naturally having this information distributed to artificially contribute dramatic effect. Feels extremely false and contrived.
I'm primarily interested in discovering how Earth as a whole will face the impending invasion from the Mechano-Lords. Whether these recently introduced hostile sentient golems will be called on to defend? Whether Gaia herself will see fit to whip them into shape, or simply doesn't mind their actions up to this point?
At least one longterm goal of Rocky's was achieved in these pages, even though he wrongfully believes he has failed in this most important task. This along with his struggle day-to-day with the companionship his ability to communicate with Azoth supplied, and finally paired with the weird circumstances that led to his class change create a rather hectic narrative with complete lack of emotional wellbeing. I'm left seriously wondering why he was the only survivor against Apep's dungeon forces that was restricted from claiming his own class?
It was an ok read. had much potential which never really got fleshed out. The magic and world was interesting, but the focus was too narrow on the MC and we never really got to see the big picture till Book 3 and even then only had glimpses of it.
Unlike other books I've read (System Apocalypses, Shadow Sun, Phase Shift etc) this one was more mainstream and stuck with the stat/skill part a lot more than I liked. One of the major part for me not rating this highly was due to the meandering plot. It just wanders and there never seems to be a set objective. MC wants to do something, then decides to do something else and actually ends up doing something completely different. Though I guess this is more real, as planning can only be limited during a real apocalypse...but the lack of structure takes away from the immersive-ness of the book.
Book overs various elements like Cultivation, Village Building, Crafting etc, but it's a jack of all and fails to deliver fully on any single aspect. All play a part, but never are cohesive enough to make an impact on the plot.
Still kept me going for 3 books (mostly as I was bored and just wanted to see where it went). Probably enough for me in this series.
First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
Over the past year it has become apparent that my reviews are somewhat antagonistic and I apologize to those of you that have taken offense. I think I had hoped to change peoples’ minds about reviewing works of art and that seems to have backfired spectacularly. However, I am still going to be true to myself and write what I believe.
To the author: Thank you for this chance to escape reality and enjoy the world you created! Keep up the good work.
To my fellow reviewers: Messaging me and reviewing my reviews is as productive as trying to shovel water out of the ocean. Stop. I get it. Let’s just all live peacefully.
To potential readers: Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
Interesting changes to the MC and hoping for the better. Getting the negative out of the way first; I hate the arc the character development is going for the MC. This book made surly, childish, and almost completely impossible to relate with as a complete lack of impulse control and constant childish tantrums seemed out of place. It pulled me from the story. Not totally irredeemable, but definitely not the direction I was expecting. I want to see the MC grow not regress.
That aside, the book is amazing and love the universe the author is creating. I would love to see more of the RPG element outside getting experience; delving into character development, classes and the mechanics of the universe. Seems as the books continue we have an epic Lit with lighter and lighter RPG element outside the most basic updates to maintain that element of the genre.
This is similar to Tao Wong, but still unique enough that you can read the series together and enjoy this as these two series set the foundation in this sub-genre, IMO.
I enjoy this series a lot and hope there are many more books in it. The author is slowly fleshing out a complicated universe and 'system's that should hold a lot of adventure and strife for us to read and enjoy. This book was a good continuation of the series and though I enjoy it in not down with the MC and his childish temper though that is probably the point. Definitely not leader material but here he is. The complicated relationship with his spirit guide is troubling as is she. Hope to see some growth in this front in the next book as the series is to good to be ruined by unstable main characters. Very emotional to be sure but more base emotion...anger, betrayal etc. I guess the characters are in a more reactive stage vs proactive and can't get their feet under them yet but there is hope. There are more books to come.... Hope soon.
I'm not sure if I'm gonna be able to pick this back up. I'm at the very beginning, but already super annoyed with the MC being a childish idiot. He was given the opportunity and necessary tools to obtain some serious badassery at the start of the story, that would have allowed him to grow and overcome one of his most glaring weaknesses as a person. Instead he's just given a free way out of having to grow to meet the challenge and immediately jumps at it. When those weaknesses could be overcome, they were understandable. Now he's given a chance to grow, and instead doesn't do anything to better himself. I don't know if I can get past the block I have against this one now. We will see.
I liked the continuation, and deepening of the story and plot, but Rocky is a bit TSTL through a lot of the last half of this book. He refuses to step up to the plate and actually be a leader and yet whines when others either call him out for it, or take up his slack. I understand his concern for his family, but his asinine behavior every time they come up is getting old. And what about everyone else’s families?
Will the old guilds return to Earth? Would that be a good or a bad thing? How will Gaia, and her inhabitants, be able to defend from the Guild Collective? Who are these people who are already master class? And what about Frankie?!
I’m not sure what to think about the sci fi elements of this story coming on stronger. It’s been there since book one, and other stories of this type have their science and technology of convenience. This one is getting it more directly from sci fi instead of magic. Strangely even the sci fi is heavily magic-infused.
The main character continues to grow and evolve and struggle with his responsibilities (as he sees them). And more friends and enemies continue to arise as well.
I am giving up on this series, I can not take anymore.
I was reading this all the way through to give a fair review. I like the concept and the base underlying story. My problem has been with the characters. The main character specifically. But at four fifths in where he gets mad and storms off at everyone not willing to drop everything and run full tilt in a suicide mission, with no plan, to save his family I was done. This character has ruined this series and the last two books.
When I first picked up this series and houses and boats and cabins started attacking people i was like this is not going to be good. However I kept reading and it was a very good story. Now into book 3 Rocky has gone kinda crazy and i personally dont like the way her is acting. He is all irrational and putting everyone else in danger. However who knows what one would do in his situation. Anyways, I still look forward to a mistake free 4th book :)
Rocky's search for his family keeps being delayed by his responsibilities as a Territory Leader. However, one of the perks of being a Territory Leader yields clues of their survival and renews his hopes of finding his mother, sister, and brother-in-law. It will be difficult and time consuming, but his personal quest continues.
This novel, and the series of which it is a part, may interest readers of the broader Fantasy genre and fans of playing RPGs.
