Meadow Street Brothers #1

Weight of Everything

Rate this book
Imagine a wardrobe malfunction at the gym. In front of the most handsome man ever.

Dumped by his longtime boyfriend because of his weight, Ulric O'Neil moves to the quiet town of Meadowfall, hoping to start afresh. He's tired of being chubby, and he's tired of being lonely. He's tired of being attracted to the wrong sort of person, too. Which alpha only likes other alphas?

The bigger question: Which man would fall for a chubby, nerdy guy who loves his sweet snacks more than he loves to exercise?

Definitely not Gage Frost, a personal trainer at Ulric's gym—he's got the most beautiful face and a stomach-dropping smile, and Ulric knows he'll fall for Gage sooner rather than later. Especially when Gage hugs him and kisses him and tells Ulric they can be best friends. But that's where the line is.

Ulric promises Gage that he won't fall in love. Thing is, with how often Gage tells him he's cute, he isn't so sure he can keep his word.

Weight of Everything is a 74,000-word standalone non-shifter MPreg romance with an eventual double-alpha-preg, lots of hurt/comfort, as well as the sweetest alpha who convinces his not-boyfriend that your looks aren't the only thing that matters.

This was atrociously bad. Pretty much from the very first page I got a bad feeling about this, but I liked the premise so I decided to give it another chance... and another.... and another.... and yet another... but not even a quarter in and it became clear that the negatives would just keep stacking up and I couldn't see past them anymore.

Content warnings include: fatphobic language to the max, so much hate?!?!, making fun of poor people, being disgusted by someone's choice of romantic/sexual partner, public humiliation, mentions of bullying, violence.

I was drawn to this knowing it would feature a fat character. The fact that the title has "weight" in it should have been the first red flag.
From literally the first page the way everything about Ulric is written was horrible. He doesn't move, he "heaves himself". I could go on with similar examples but I don't want to.

Even if it wasn't for the fatphobia, it was bad. The way Ulric and Gage treat each other was horrendous, and, in their own words "What the fuck?!"
The animosity between them was not only hateful and unreasonable, it followed no rhyme or reason and just extremely off-putting and comes without warning. Several times I was left speechless and appalled. When it first happened it figured it was a one-off, but just a few pages later another situation.
There was so much hate between the protagonists who were supposed to fall in love, and the way they treated each other was SO NOT OKAY I really did no longer want to see them end up together. There was hate from external sources, too, and that too was horrible and appalling and totally over the top.

It was also just super uncomfortable. The way both Ulric and Gage are self-conscious and insecure about themselves felt performative, and the direct comparison between Ulric's fatness and Gage's being-so-hot-that-oh-woe-is-me-everyone-is-jealous-of-my-hotness-and-I-can-never-form-meaningful-relationships-because-people-only-want-me-for-my-looks as if those two things are the same just added another note on the ever growing list of off-putting things in this book.

Again, I could go on about other minor things about this book that were just bad, but I already wasted too much time on it tbh. I wish this had been different, because we really need more fat characters in (any genre but especially in) m/m romance, but this just Wasn't It.

I gotta say, I am enjoying the hell out of Anna writing alpha/alpha pairings and throwing some mpreg in the mix! They are just aggressive and physical and all get out when they are together, and I love that bit of a different dynamic than when there are omegas involved.

I just loved Ulric, my heart broke for him with how down on himself he felt, how horrible his mother treated him (and that's putting it lightly) and how poor his self image was. Gage was perfect for him, saw the wonderful man Ulric is, and was so sweet.

I won't give anything away about the mpreg - although if you read the last book in the spin-off, you'll know how it can happen for two alphas, but it was super enjoyable and I loved how it all played out!

Hoping that some of the characters we met in this story will get their own stories. I could see Gage's younger brother getting a story and the doctor.

What I liked about this was the premise of two Alphas falling for each other, who are both posturing a lot to hide deep rooted insecurities, one for being overweight and the other for being poor.
The execution however wasn't all that great.

Basically anything and everything in this story is grossly exaggerated and over the top. The mishaps trump the worst slapstick situations, the bad experiences are so dramatically overloaded it's ridiculous and the good deeds are equally unrealistic. The language is rather offensive towards overweight people for a story that proclaims to be anti-bodyshaming, and the MCs treat each other unreasonably hateful or so sappy it hurts.
At times it reads like fanfiction written by a 14-year-old, and I don't mean the writing so much as the MCs behaviour, which is often erratic, immature and contradictory, whatever the situation requires to overemphasize the drama.

Still it's mostly an okay read, carried by a light atmosphere and meant for brainless enjoyment.

However, towards the last third, another aspect is brought to the story. If you're very sensitive when it comes to spoilers, you might wanna stop reading now, but it's no secret that the book features mpreg aspects and you might wonder about that with the MCs being Alphas both.
I'm asking, why would you choose to set your story in an omegaverse which is specifically designed to make mpreg no big deal - and there is no other reason for the setting since there is no attempt at any kind of world building at all - and then go and invent a poorly thought out way to make alpha pregnancies possible via an uterus implant surgery? You could have just stuck with the real world and this would have truly been dramatic, but no, you invent a world with men who can get pregnant and ones who can't, but wait, actually anyone can.
I was very unimpressed with that, but what really was the last straw for me was a paragraph towards the end: Since having received the transplant and taking hormones the alphas experience these strange urges to pick out curtains and paint their nails and such. That is so blatantly sexist, I want to throw a fit.

I'm probably done with this author.

Wineheart's books always put me in a good mood reading them. I enjoyed the weight loss theme since it was paired with the oh so important affirmation 'you are perfect just the way you are'. Loved that about the book!

There were also a few novel mpreg ideas as the main couple are both alphas. Not sure I liked this particular idea though... But Wineheart have a knack of writing main characters that I immediately like, and that's probably why I return for more of her books.

Reluctantly I took one star off this title due to some eyeroll stuff, and worse - I got bored - as the story progressed. What was up with that scene where and above all - not an act of kindness.

But the two alpha men were sweet as apple pie together. I always enjoy characters that rescue each other in turns. Gives me all the warm fuzzy feels.

This is a terrific non-shifting/Mpreg/Alpha/Omega type story, and quite unique. Out two men are so different in several ways, because it's two alphas, one a fitness instructor, Gage, and the other a sweet man, Ulric, who has been verbally abused since childhood by family and others, for his chubbiness.
Ulric works on finances and is wealthy. Gage is being evicted, and trying to pay for his sister's cancer treatment.
Each alpha has pride and a fierceness, and are enemies at first, when Ulric begins working out at Gage's gym. Ulric thinks Gage is inconsiderate, and Gage doesn't know why Ulric has such anger and self-deprecating thoughts.

Now, here we have some super sex scenes, I mean explicit, angry, wild, raw sexual acts. I don't remember such explicit descriptions in a long time, if ever. Wow !

Ulric and Gage are fighting for dominance, but each man ends up taking turns with it. Ulric likes the tussles and forceful holding.

We see Gage's loving family, and the horrible mother that Ulric has. We see interactions with neighbors, and friends, plus our guys tell their pasts, but not up front, it takes them awhile to feel vulnerable enough to share. There is give and take, good days together, and tough arguments and wrestling.
Later, an idea is shown to Gage, and he mentions it, because it is new and unique, so alpha couples can have children. He has a friend who used it with amazing results.

Later on, when our guys are settling into the fact that they are staying together, they try the new technology.

The book is fascinating, hot and sexy, and an unusual pairing, but this story keeps us enthralled, and hanging on.
ENJOY !

Thank you sweet Darlene for the rec ! :)

So this wasn't bad but it wasn't really that good either?

Initial meeting, dislike and situation for them to become roommates felt convoluted and forced.
Both judge each other heavily on their looks, while judging themselves as well: it makes sense since this is how it's been their whole life and how it always will be...but to reduce it so heavily?
Ulric: I'm going to be a dick to him because he's beautiful and if I'm not careful I could fall in love with him
Gage: I'm not supposed to like alphas as an alpha let's push him away

Gage moves in with Ulric because circumstances.
And immediately two things become central:
- money
- sex

Sexuality awakening: poor.
Gage has never been attracted to or interested in an alpha before and runs very hot and cold and proposes a bromance and boyfriendship within pages of each other...if he couldn't make up his mind how am I supposed to follow?
Sex was good though (if a bit repetitive towards the end), two alphas and their instincts leading to scenes of rough-housing and consensual non-consent: yes!

Money conflict: ugh
- Gage is broke as hell because his sister has cancer and the family is scrounging together every cent they can to pay for treatment (which is why he moves in with Ulric in the first place) but will not accept any kind of help.

- Ulric is supposedly super wealthy (from a wealthy family, would not need to work, has a house that costs at least 3200 dollars a month, 10000 dollars are peanuts for him... you get this gist) BUT later on the surgery for them both to get uteri is supposedly too expensive? It felt a bit inconsistent at times.

They both handled the money conflict poorly and resolved it too easily imo ()

Okay, we never see the sister. See his relationship with his sister. Like why not?
When they are
BUT we see random Meadowfall guys in really odd, forced scenes (as I don't know many characters and this is #1 it at least felt forced): give me scenes with characters who are pertinent to the action.
We get to see Ulric's b*tch of a mother, why don't we get to see Gage interacting with his sister? Odd.

Ulric's body and self-worth
I felt like this was handled really well. There's a reason I don't read too many books with 'chubby' characters as the self-doubt and never-ending issues pertaining food, exercise, self-worth can hit too close to home for me to fully enjoy the story.

NSFW infos:

One alpha who has not liked alphas before

consensual non-consent

This book was unlike any other mpreg book I have ever read, and not just because it's about two alphas.
I have read other books with two alpha lovers, but they usually have a third (omega) lover or one of the alphas is more of a bottom. These two guys were aggressive (for lack of a better word) about their love making. Neither one of them seemed to hate bottoming or anything, but neither of them were going to easily submit either.
But what I really loved about this book was how the weight issue was handled. As someone who deals with that issue myself, it is often hard for me to read books like this one. But something about this book drew me in, and I decided to give it a chance. And I am glad I did. Ulric's issues with his weight were painful to read about because they stemmed from people who should have been building him up instead of tearing him down. But Gage handled it beautifully. Instead of trying to explain that, I am going to include three quotes that I really loved.

I´m craving for omegaverse stories that are different, and this is it . It´s an alphaxalpha romance.

Ulric is an alpha who has emotional issues due his figure, most of them created by his mother.
Gage isa perfect example of what an alpha should be, but of course, he has never had a strong emotional connection.

Due to a misunderstanding they initially hate each other, but the circumstances force them to share a house and that is the beginning of everything.

Double mpreg!!

I wasn't prepared for this one. I mean, there are a lot of alpha pairs but none where both alphas get knocked up at the same time.

I will be honest here, I really did not connect with either mc. It never felt like we got to know either one. I did however, like the younger brother. I think he is in the next book.

And since this was pointed out to me and now I can't unsee it, there is food sex in here. Mostly meat and celery related. I'll try to remember to add that bit to future reviews.

Anna Wineheart’s newest book and series Meadow Street Brothers – Weight of Everything is a great addition to the Meadowfalls town setting.

Gage and Ulric are both Alpha’s and to some narrow-minded people, they may look to be an unlikely couple. Gage is a dark-haired handsome man with a gorgeous Alpha body. He’s a personal trainer at a gym and where he works out himself to keep his six-eight pack abs, slim body, and heavily muscled biceps.

Gage could have anyone he wanted, but they were just one night stands that had no meaning in Gage’s life except for sexual release. He’d had a boyfriend but appears to have been deeply hurt by the man. Gage’s life was not an easy road, but he had a supportive loving family, and now with his sister’s hospital bills, he works hard to help pay towards those treatment expenses.

Physically, Ulric was the total opposite of Gage. As he would constantly tell himself, “he was fat” and no one would ever love him, especially when he didn’t like omegas, he like Alphas. He was overweight and it was something he struggled with all his life. Ulric’s mother added extra stress to Ulric’s life with her constant nagging about Ulric’s weight and no one ever wants him.

Even when Ulric would start to lose some weight she still called him fat and a disgrace to the family and she really didn’t want to be seen in public with him; a nasty mother. With Ulric’s mother’s constant belittling over the years, it became ingrained in Ulric that it all must be true…that no one would ever want him much less love him, and that he was a useless fat nobody; a cruel, cruel mother.

When Gage and Ulric first met, Gage, was not into Alpha’s, he had only been with omegas, but there was something about Ulric that had piqued Gage’s interest. For Ulric, he knew he had no chance to have a date with the perfect Alpha, plus the man was straight for omegas only.

But I will say I admired Ulric’s strength to try not just to lose weight, but also stick to a diet that was killing him to keep on. He loved his sweets. Ulric embarrassed himself the first day at the gym where Gage works and took a few weeks before he had the courage to go back to the gym and try again. Gage was impressed with the Alpha, Ulric, who kept on coming back to try to lose weight. Ulric already knew he wanted Gage, but Gage couldn’t understand his attraction to the man.

When Gage had been evicted by his landlord for not keeping up his rent (due to money going to his sister’s hospital bills), he was homeless living out of his car. Ulric and Gage were having a conversation near Gage’s car when Ulric noticed the back seat and front packed full of what looked like all of Gage’s possessions.

Ulric was smart enough to know that Gage’s pride would be the man’s downfall and Ulric mentioned shyly that Gage could move in with him because he had plenty of space. With a quick negotiation between the two men they came up with a reasonable rent price and Gage moved in. Which once Gage moved in knowing that he should have been paying more for rent.

From that point on the two men went around and around each other with serious self-doubt, self-depreciation on Ulric’s part, and Gage’s unknowing feeling as to what was happening to himself. Being together, Gage and Ulric were learning more about themselves and Ulric was learning that maybe, just maybe someone would want him no matter what he looked like.

To Gage, Ulric was beautiful just as he was and his thoughts and feeling shifted to something much more. Don’t get me wrong, Gage seriously was in denial about his attractions and feelings towards Ulric. Even after becoming lovers, to Gage, they were just “friends” but soon realized it may be more than that.

Through the book, Ulric constantly fought his self-doubt, his physical self-image, and that no man could possibly find him attractive to love and would stay with him for the long haul; they always left.

This book brings so many emotions as to how one sees themselves as not perfect, and worth nothing and that no one could possibly love you as you are and your self-esteem hitting rock bottom. But the book also showed the side of love where you didn’t have to be perfect in order to be accepted and loved.

I won’t get into the Alpha’s pregnancies but that is one lovely part of Gage’s and Ulric’s story. I love them to pieces and loved Gage’s patience with Ulric; two wonderful characters paired. I love Anna Wineheart’s books and this one is added to my long list of favorites. It’s a wonderful book and worth reading! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced read copy of this book.

*´¨)
¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨)
(¸.•´ (¸.•`All they needed to do was believe.

This book felt like a continuation of Anna's last series, Meadowfall Firefighters. In fact, all the books thus far have had appearances of someone from a previous book, which makes it just perfect.

For alpha Ulric, his size made him feel different. The one time he thought to do something about it, he was humiliated to the core. But out of it all, he got to meet the gorgeous alpha Gage, someone he was crushing on.

Though they had a bad start, snark and all, Ulric invited Gage to come live with him when Gage's situation became dire. They went through a lot while living together, mostly, Gage's change in his understanding of Ulric's feelings. And Ulric, his change on building his confidence.

At first, I was hesitant with what was happening, but as the story developed, I was able to see the men for who they were and understand what led them to become the person they became. It was interesting to see Gage's changes and his fight for Ulric. The author also introduced into these two men's lives a way to be together as family, when it would have been impossible without an omega. [Gasp!]

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.

There were a lot of positive things about this book, but I also found a few things that didn't work for me.

First, and most importantly, was the fatphobia sprinkled throughout this book (sometimes quite blatant, to be perfectly honest) which was extremely irritating since this book tried to tell you it was body-positive. However, when Gage first met Ulric he continuously referred to the other man as "Chubby" in his head. Even once Gage learned Ulric's name he still often referred to him as "Chubby." There were other moments throughout that unnecessarily described Ulric's physical appearance in a negative light (ie referring to him as heavy, bulky, muffin-like, etc etc) that didn't need to happen as frequently as they did.

That being said, I really related to Ulric's character, as someone who is plus sized myself. His relationship with food was quite well done, as well were his internal struggles of how he is perceived by others. I hated his mother and she can burn.

One thing that didn't quite work for me is the lack of backstory about the ABO dynamics - are there even betas here? None were mentioned - but perhaps this is something that was better explained in the author's first Meadow Street series. I think that's where Jesse and Dom originated? Something about a firefighter series. However, I would have appreciated a bit more background there.

I enjoy mpreg stories and I'm a huge fan of all Anna's Meadowfall books -- but this one really blew me away.

As much as I love romance stories, it's incredibly rare to find main characters who aren't stereotypically physically attractive in some way. Not only is Ulric plain and overweight, but he's been made to feel like he's worthless his entire life. His lack of self-confidence is heartbreaking. Anna does an absolutely amazing job of describing Ulric's journey towards self-acceptance, and Gage's opinion on Ulric's weight (he doesn't care about the weight, he just wants Ulric to be healthy enough so they can live a long life together) is a breath of fresh air.

As if that wasn't enough reason to love this book, Anna's also outdone herself with the intensity of Gage and Ulric's sexual connection. The alpha/alpha sex scenes are incredibly erotic, bordernig on consentual non-consent, with both men fighting for dominance.

I can't recommend this book enough, and I look forward to my next trip to Meadowfall!

You probably know the feeling when you are in desperat need of a comfort read.
I was hoping for one when I read the blurb and did I get what I wanted? I totally did! Weight of Everything didn't dissappoint. It started of with a very hilarious threadmill scene and continued with a good mix of conflict and comfort but never too much drama.
I didn't care too much about the mpreg part, because Gage and Ulric were pretty perfect together even before they considered having a baby, but it was so enjoyable seeing them becoming happier and happier from page to page.
It may not be a perfect book, but as a comfort read it earned four stars easily.

LOVE CAN MAKE THE MOST ORDINARY PERSON BEAUTIFUL

I received this book for free and am giving my honest and voluntary review

Ulric is an overweight alpha who only likes alphas. Gage is an alpha who meets Ulric and only likes Ulric even though he’s never been involved with an alpha. Circumstances lead them to becoming roommates and things take off. Anna has outdone herself once again with a story to make you finish the book without putting it down.

What I liked about the story?
The cover, for sure... the scenes with Ulric and Gage NOT having sex... which if the sex scenes had been removed, it would have made this book about half the length it is now... and the babies! Yep, that's about it... oh, and Gage's family! Curious to see if we will get more of Wilkie (can't decide if I love or hate this name) in the future!

This was recommended to me, so I persevered through the awkward opening - the two MCs were super mean to each other at the beginning for no real reason.

As soon as they got over that stage, though? Swoon.

They are so cute together! I am really interested in pairings other than the (hetero-normative-feeling) alpha/omega and this was a great rec. I'm excited to see that the author has many more books with alpha/alpha pairings, too, so they're going on my TBR list.

Ulric needed someone to love him for who he was and not for losing weight. Gage was absolutely adorable since he was so clueless about his own feelings and their relationship. I'm glad their got their HEA together (with some extra additions to their family).

Well, I finished the book but everything about the story just felt off.
For a romance, Ulric and Gage were not very nice, especially to each other, even when we are told they have "feelings", I didn't feel it. And both of them were very negative people, hard to feel empathy for them.
The premise and blurb sounded good. I love a/b/o books and mpreg.
An alpha/alpha theme was interesting. I don't know why the special DNA therapy and uterine implant surgery just did not feel acceptable to me, it is fiction after all, but again it just felt off. And when both guys got implants together, heats together and pregnant together, yes I rolled my eyes. Sorry this story was just not my cup of tea.

Wonderful characters, great humor, lots of pinning, very sympathetic and tear jerking issues of self-worth. But my absolute favorite part was the sex. It was an animalistic sex-hazed fight for dominance that was oh so hot!!! The ending was...odd. I mean I like mpreg but it kinda felt like too much. I don't wanna give spoilers so I'll end it there. But despite the weirdness/silliness of the ending Anna Wineheart has caught my interest and I'll be checking out more of her works in the near future.

3.5 Stars. The previous book I’ve read by this author didn’t do it for me, but they’ve definitely improved in their writing and I really enjoyed this one. It did take me a little while to get into it, as I just couldn’t quite warm up to Gage, but he takes a turn and becomes so absolutely sweet and adoring and I quickly fell in love with him and Ulric together

So, it took me a moment to get into the story but once I got into the back and forth of their interactions and the bond that begins to form, I really enjoyed it.
We dive right in with such an embarrassing moment for Ulrich who already suffers with such a low lever of self worth/esteem. He's been beaten down by bullies including his own mother. He's always been attracted to alphas and straight away is to Gage but they definitely don't hit it off at first. I didn't actually like Gage to begin with as he has some quite unkind thoughts/words towards Ulrich but he definitely redeems himself as we move through the book. Ulrich ends up offering Gage a room for rent when he sees the other alpha down on his luck and it's this that gives the two men a chance to actually get to know each other and build a friendship. All the while Ulrich is constantly fighting his attraction to the other alpha even as Gage's is growing as he starts noticing things he likes about his new friend.
The sex is hot between them, definitely a lot rougher than others in the sense that they both want the control as their inner alpha takes over. There's a lot of pushing and shoving but it's clearly wanted by both. Gage does so well in getting better at seeing behind a person's exterior. As a larger person, it's always been something that Ulrich has been judged for and Gage slowly helps him to build up his confidence in himself and their relationship. There are some really heartwarming moments, especially as they become comfortable in what they are building together. The ending is good as it spans several months and we get to keep up with everything that goes on with them as they reach their HEA.
A great start to the new series from Anna Wineheart. I'm a big fan of the Meadowfall books that have come out so far and look forward to who gets their story next.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I was attracted to this book because I love the fat mc trope aswell as the omegaverse. Reading this book I can say with a hundred percent certainty that certain aspects were misogynistic. This book felt half done. I loved the heavy topics of fatphobia and eating disorder, but I felt that the author never really tried to resolve the trauma. It's one thing for someone to tell you that you are beautiful, it's another for you to actually believe it. I also noticed that Ulrich has an eating disorder, but it was never talked about or even fleshed out properly. For the omegaverse aspect, I have read a lot of this trope and I can tell you this was a massive abomination. First and foremost, using the fact that someone is an omega as a metaphor for "feminine" behaviors is not okay. This was basically just misogyny hidden as omegaverse. It didn't sit right with me how they would just implant a uterus from a secretive clinic. Where do you get the uterus' from? I'll be frank I could not finish this book because as soon as I got to chapter 31, I was completely over whatever bullshit this author thought was okay to publish. Iastly, I love Ulrich and Gage but these characters were especially frustrating. It was as if both of them were entirely afraid to say NO! I also want to point out that the Gage wasn't really fleshed out. It was as if the author spent all her time explaining who Ulrich was and how he came to be that and never gave any attention to Gage. All in all, this was somewhat a waste of my time and will be a waste of your time. I'm very disappointed because if the idea for this novel was given to a better author, it really could've been a 5 out 5. Will definitely be avoiding this author from now on.

Love No Matter Size

Ulric has been told by even his family he's unlovable because of his weight. His mom.is down right horrible. He goes to gym wanting to lose some of the weight even though for years he's tried. The things his parents did is so abuse to me. Trigger warnings for that.

At gym he's trying a machine and it goes horribly wrong. Its how he meets Gage. Gage and him don't hot it off that great at first because of Ulric's self consciousness he thinks he's going laugh at him. So he's lashes out because he thinks Gage will tease him. He doesn't though they get into it more than once. Its one thing I wasn't fond of.

One day Ulric notices that Gage is living out his car and invites him to move in with him. He's crushing on Gage even though he's been being mean too. Gage was kicked out his place cause was trying to pay his sister's bills who's sick. Which the argument they get into farther in the book when they are friends with benefits even though want more yet won't admit it annoyed me big time.

Ulric just wanted Gage there like promised instead of working so much. I so felt his pain and wanted to give him all the hugs that Gage wasn't. After an attack things change and they get back together. Gage's family adore Ulric and not just because he helped out with the bills. They become his family too. The pregnancy isn't til near end which I wanted more that. I liked the twist we got with it. Takes most the book for Gage get Ulric see he thinks he's beautiful the way he is with extra to love and every time calls himself fat he corrects him after get together.

3.5 stars altogether. I love the closest baby chronicles by Anna the most.
