New York defense lawyer Madison Harley only takes on clients he believes innocent. He’s known as ‘Mr. 100%’ because he has never lost a case, and consequently he is Public Enemy No. 1 in the eyes of the NYPD, the District Attorney’s Office and the media.
It’s 1987 and groundbreaking developments in the field of forensic science sees DNA profiling used for the first time in criminal investigations in America. This has major repercussions for Harley. Estranged from his wife and children, he feels suicidal. Then he meets beautiful prosecution lawyer Kate Marshall. The attraction is immediate – and mutual.

Lance's first solo-authored novel, an epic historical adventure titled New Zealand: A Novel was published in December 2024. A tale of conflict, lust and adventure, it spans almost 500 years and covers the respective discoveries of New Zealand by Pacific Islanders and Europeans. From the outset the two stories are interposed. It starts in the 1300’s with the departure of Islanders from Hawaiki in search of land far to the south. A land Maori will name Aotearoa. Harley Madison is a defense attorney with an impeccable record, he has cleared all of his clients, earning him the name Mr. 100%. He defends a rapist-murder and gets him a not guilty verdict and set free. Then the client confesses that he in fact did commit the crime. Harley does the unthinkable, he hires a hit man to get rid of this monster.
A fast paced original story. Watching Harley go from Hero to despair to vigilante as his life takes on a new turn was intense. He has a conscious and can not let go of what he learned. Lives are in danger and due to one client, Harley's life is in danger and will never be the same. I highly recommend Mr. 100% to all.
New Zealand novelist and screenwriter Lance Morcan is a former journalist and newspaper editor with over twenty published books to his credit. Often he writes in collaboration with his son James Morcan, but new novel is another solo for Lance. Following the ongoing output of a talented author such as Lance is rewarding in that with each new publication, a different aspect of his talent is evident. Having read almost all of his books, this reviewer believes MR. 100% to be his most polished and creative novel to date – and that is significant given his prodigious tally of works! More acutely than ever, Lance displays a fine gift for creating characters – both central and peripheral. The cast seems familiar, not that anyone has cultured them in the fine style that Lance delivers, but in the fact that they are credible to the point of being visual.
Setting the tone for this story, the book opens with A Dilemma – ‘On the evening of November 2nd, 1987, in the den of his upmarket Manhattan apartment in New York City, a depressed and intoxicated Madison Harley studied his Glock 17 through the bottom of an empty whiskey glass. The pistol, which rested on the desktop alongside a near-empty bottle of Heaven Hill Bourbon, was loaded. Harley planned to use the Glock to end his life very soon, but not before he drained the bottle. It was, after all, a question of priorities….’ Being witness to a thought of suicide incites the curiosity of the reader to explore this character’s circumstances.
The synopsis of the plot outlines the dilemma without spoiling the tenor of the novel: Hotshot New York defense lawyer Madison Harley only takes on clients he believes innocent. He’s known as ‘Mr. 100%’ because he has never lost a case, and consequently he is Public Enemy No. 1 in the eyes of the police, prosecutors and the media. The bad press has taken a toll on his personal life. His wife has moved out, taking their two young sons with her and instigating divorce proceedings. When his latest client confides that he is guilty of the horrific rape-murder he’s accused of, a depressed and guilt-wracked Harley hires a contract killer to terminate him after the jury delivers a Not Guilty verdict. It’s 1987 and groundbreaking developments in the field of forensic science sees DNA profiling used for the first time in criminal investigations in America. The release of DNA test results causes Harley to rescind his order to carry out the hit on his client. Unfortunately for him, the killer doesn’t change direction once a ‘kill’ order has been placed. The nightmare scenario that follows sees Mr. 100% negotiating for his client’s life, his own life and the lives of his estranged family with a Mafia henchman, stalking a contract killer and acting as a minder for a client who it appears really is innocent and who is oblivious to the mayhem unfolding around him. Throughout it all, Harley is sustained by the affections of a new woman in his life – a prosecutor with the District Attorney’s Office no less.
Once again Lance Morcan proves he is a master weaver of stories. Not only is this a fine story, but it also adds a depth of knowledge about the impact of DNA profiling, a topic which along with omnipresence of surveillance cameras, facial recognition, and other contemporary invasive legal profundities, deserves exploring! Rich in flavor and fine characterizations, this novel is particularly fine. Highly recommended.
This was a good New York lawyer read. I could have read 200 plus pages more. I didn't know this was a short story. Unsure how to get prompted on Amazon Kindle to leave my review on Amazon. Thank you.
Mr 100% is by Lance Morcan. This novella is just as good as anything Lance has written before. This book revolves around overthinking what you do and also paying the consequences for whatever he does. Madison Harley was a well-known defense lawyer known as Mr. 100% because he had won 100% of his cases. This made him cocky and obnoxious both in his practice and at home. When a drunk driver killed a woman and her daughter. When he did this, he was driving after having previously being found not guilty on another drunk driving charge. The press and the public found out about this, they turned on Mr. 100%. The notoriety caused his wife so much pain that she took their children and left him. The trial he had just finished was of a man who had molested a young girl. When the trial was over, he was found not guilty; but as the man turned to leave the courtroom, he all but told Mad that he had indeed molested the young girl. For the first time, Madison believed he had won a case for a truly guilty person and almost could not stand it. Madison’s conscious began to really bother him. It bothers Madison so much that he goes to the Mafia and pays for a hit on his own client. Then his client tells him he was just kidding. What is Madison going to do now. He has put a price on his own client! Can he stop it before it goes down?
Great story, I loved it. The plot is gritty and has a certain edge to it, and you can’t help but be pulled in by it. One of the things I really enjoy about Lance Morcan’s books and Novella’s is that he keeps me guessing. He also has a talent for creating interesting and diverse characters. So many great stories. Madison Harley deserved this nickname of Mr 100%. It was very unusual for a defence lawyer to not have lost a case, ever. This should have made Harley happy, over the moon in fact, however he knew he sometimes represented people who were most likely guilty. The question was, could Harley live with himself? This is a story that would make a great movie. Do yourself a favour and read this story, it really is that good. 5/5 Star Rating.
Harley was drinking heavily. What he'd learned the day before really hit him hard. He was sure his life was over. Divorced and now this. He had decided to kill himself. It would be the right thing to do. It was the only thing to do under the circumstances. Harley just couldn't believe he'd been so gullible. Then he had an idea. It might just work and it would clear things up. Even the score. What would he do after though This book is a real switch from most mysteries. Well written, characters you can relate to and a story that keeps you guessing. The story is fascinating. It's such a twist, you'll keep it playing in your mind for days. The tense moments will set your mind wandering to see if you can figure it out. Of course there are some funny moments included in the book. It's a swift read. Check it out for yourself.
I did find an issue. The story slowly builds and you are set to get deep into it and suddenly it's over. It really needs to be longer.
I gave this one 4 cheers out of 5 because of the length. copy of book provided by author and I voluntarily reviewed it.
