What will happen when the bibliophagic tactician Regis faces off against the strategy officer chosen by a queen?
Led by Oswald, the High Britannian Army begins its march across Belgarian soil. Altina’s forces must lend their aid to the losing imperial army, but the Grand Duchy of Varden chooses this exact moment to attack Fort Volks.
Regis proposes a plan to send Varden’s troops packing in a single night, but it comes at a cost: the treasured sword is put out of commission, and Belgarian casualties are continuing to pile up. Will they really be able to protect the Empire!?
As the battle continues, an unexpected encounter reveals more about Regis’s past...
Here is the fifth volume of a tale of war, love, and politics, woven by the bookworm and the sword princess.
Ramble time. 3.5 actually, but I guess 4 rather than 3. I liked the first part, against Varden. The next part is more or less the first half of the war against Brittania, and the author says he wants to wrap it up by the next volume. As usual I like the writing style and description of the tactics and interactions between the characters.
I just can't bring myself to enjoy arrogant characters, which basically seemed to be the whole seventh army's generals and commanders. They do get their... due rewards by the end of the volume, but some traits just can't be changed, and either way it leaves an unpleasant taste. I see why it's necessary, and it proves that Regis is a better strategist and Altina a better leader, but that doesn't mean I'll enjoy reading it. Well, it's a personal sort of preference.
And although Oswald's tactics are cool and all (his perspective is neat too) I just don't like his or the Queen's personalities so I can't vibe with it. Altina and Regis are just vastly more appealing, to me, that's all.

Finally the story got back to it's normal rhythm. Although they lost the battle (Due to a childish strategist), but the next book will spread Regis Auric name as "The Legendary Strategist That Defeated High Britannia" across the continent at the very best.
