When you look into the abyss…the abyss looks into you.
After dumping the body of a serial killer on my former boss’s desk, I handed in my cop badge, which I’ve replaced with an FBI badge. Yep, I’m a Fed. I work for Special Affairs, a clandestine department tasked with policing the Occult Underground.
My first case has me investigating a sinister therapist organization called the Mirrorists, who seem to specialize in convincing Mytholites into committing suicide, taking as many with them as possible. Evil doings are afoot, and it’s up to me to find out the identity of the leader of the secretive organization and bring them to justice… or an early grave. Whichever comes first.
In the meantime, my personal life is a disaster zone. There’s a Yakuza boss who wants to kill me, and my crazy Hellicorn is going through an existential crisis…with dire consequences. But it’s the evil warlock—the same one who masterminded the deaths of my wife and daughter—who is making my life a living nightmare. Not only does he invade my dreams every night, he also haunts my waking hours in a bid to drive me insane. If I don’t stop him soon, I fear I might end up in a padded cell…or worse.
With my sanity hanging by a thread, and my life veering out of control, running away with an old flame is looking like a good option right now.
I wonder what Hell is like this time of year? It has to be better than here…
I’m N.P. Martin and I’m a lover of dark fantasy and horror. Writing stories about magick, the occult, monsters and kickass characters has always been my idea of a dream job, and these days, I get to live that dream. I have tried many things in my life (professional martial arts instructor, bouncer, plasterer, salesman…to name a few), but only the writing hat seems to fit. When I’m not writing, I’m spending time with my wife and daughters at our home in Northern Ireland.
Drake is being driven to madness by an unknown force and for unknown reasons. Expertly and wonderfully detailed by Mr Martin. (as in, you can feel Ethan's pain)
The city is being plagued by a virus, supernormals are being manipulated into self hate and destruction, Haedemus develops an addiction and Ethan may be slowly going mad.
One person is behind all this, Drake must discover who, and how to counteract them. Question is, can he do it this time or will they get the better of him?
I have been hooked on this series from the very first book. They are imaginative, action-packed, gritty stories with some amazing characters and a generous peppering of distinctive dark humor. This book runs a little longer than the previous ones but goes by in a flash as it is very hard to put down once you start reading. Ethan is facing multiple challenges in his professional life as well as his personal life. There is no shortage of villains as we watch him face off against organized crime, ghouls, vampires, spreaks, MURKS, a yakuza crime boss with a grudge, and even an ice queen. Fortunately for enthusiasts of dark urban fantasy and especially for fans of this series, there is never a dull moment in the life of Ethan Drake. This book does leave much unresolved business for Ethan and I will be looking forward to seeing where the author chooses to take him next.
I was provided with an advance copy of this book by the author and I am voluntarily offering my honest and unbiased review.
Black Mirror is a fantastic addition to the Ethan Drake series. It is darker and grittier than the previous books of this series. It’s not for the faint of heart. But it is a non-stop roller-coaster of action, with twists and turns you never see coming.
Once more Ethan finds himself facing powerful beings who are way over his pay grade. There are heart-stopping, bone-chilling moments in the book, where you literally can’t put the book down until you find out how Ethan faired through the ordeal, cheering for his success. The character is written so well and so realistic that despite his darkness and flaws, you can’t help but sympathize and care for him.
The story has been building up through the series and in this book some secrets are getting revealed while new questions are surfacing, creating more suspense and more mysteries. This is an amazing, action-packed series that gets only better with each next installment. If you love dark Urban Fantasy, you must read it. You won’t be disappointed.
Absolutely hooked by the writing style, snark & awesome characters being introduced & developed in this brilliant series. N. P. Martin has already been added to my list of favourite authors.. I'm looking forward to reading more by this creative writer, including those in the rest of the Ethan Drake series. Not going to give any spoilers, hate review's that do that..but every book read so far, more than deserves the 5* rating
I can't believe this author has a family he is demented to write this kind of sick stuff I guess he has no conscience. The story is such a bummer and sick
There are levels. Things you do and don't do. I understand a cliffhanger but this was overboard. I'm done with this series, leaving off like that is bad. I'm done
I really enjoyed this edition in the series! I like the character Drake very much! He is like a mean guy and a hero at the same time! What a great combination.
Loved the storyline. Unsustainable and delightfully irreverent. Lack of proper editing in quite a few oarts let's it down a bit. Dude! Get editing or get a friend to edit the typing/language/spelling for you. Otherwise, great read!
