At long last, the Clans’ campaign for the Inner Sphere is coming to a head. Khan Alaric Wolf is preparing for his biggest moves yet…and is willing to enlist just about anyone who can help him achieve his ultimate goal—the conquest of Terra.

To that end, he sends one of his own on a special assignment. Marotta Kerensky is a Clan Wolf warrior unlike any other—the perfect candidate for a mission unlike any other: convince the legendary Wolf’s Dragoons to rejoin the Clan they originally came from.

But when Marotta reaches the mercenary unit, he finds them quite different from the storied force of a century ago. Times have changed since then, and the Dragoons have as well…or have they? Driven to accomplish his mission at any cost, Marotta allies with a Dragoons officer on a risky gambit that may help him deliver what his Khan wants…or tear Wolf’s Dragoons apart forever.

This book continues the Dark Age storyline started in the Mech Warrior Dark Age series which was a continuation of the classic Battletech series. The Mech Warrior Dark Age series consisted of thirty books published by WizKids and ROC. This book is published by Catalyst Game Labs and Topps. The books in this series, like the books in the original Battletech series and the Mech Warrior Dark Age series, are by various authors. Divided We Fall is by Blaine Lee Pardoe.
The Republic of the Sphere has known a long period of peace and prosperity. Then the interstellar communications network a.k.a. the HPG net is destroyed and many planets in the Republic find themselves cut off from the rest of the galaxy with communications taking weeks or even months. Unrest leads to several factions on several planets trying to overthrow the local governments and seize power for themselves.
In this one many years have passed while Terra and Prefecture X have hidden behind the Fortress Republic wall. Now the Fortress Wall has come down Alaric Ward, Khan of Clan Wolf plans his attack on Terra. He knows it will be a tough battle because he will not only be facing Republic troops and Mech Warriors but also he will be facing off against Khan Malvina Hazen and Clan Jade Falcon for the title of ilKhan. He will need help against two such powerful forces. He decides to send Marotta Kerensky to try and enlist the help of the fabled mercenary unit, the Wolf's Dragoons. When Marotta reaches the Dragoons he finds a very different force than he expected. Failure is not an option however so he will do his utmost to recruit this fabled force even if he must die trying. This is another great read in this series.

Clan Wolf is preparing for the push to Terra. While Clan forces seem to be capable to deal a death blow to the Republic of the Sphere, emergence of another Clan, Jade Falcon, lurking on the fringes, threatens with decimating blow to destroy the Wolves after they expend themselves in fight on Terra.
To succeed Wolves need additional experienced troops and one of the Wolves' analysts, Marotta Kerensky, suggests that famous mercenary outfit - Wolf's Dragoons - needs to join the fight with the Clan Wolf. Khan Alaric agrees with this suggestion and sends Marotta (you gotta love Alaric - you suggested it, then please do execute it :)) to Dragoon's HQ to negotiate their participation in the forthcoming great battle.

Marotta will make contact with Dragoon's, but these are not Dragoon's of the past glory, they have changed and are not exactly what they once were. Inadvertently his actions will cause friction and split between Dragoon officers and push the entire mercenary outfit towards not so clear future.

Although this is relatively short ouverture to final book Hour of the Wolf, it is very interesting tale. All the characters are well presented, especially Marotta, and Dragoons' Crews and Brubaker. Split within Dragoon outfit was not only because of decisions made by Brubaker (including his decisions related to the state of Gamma regiment before Marotta's arrival) - reasons were much deeper. It was basically split between old Dragoons that still had links to Clan Wolf and knew that dominance of Jade Falcon would be age of terror, new Dragoons that saw Clans as greatest danger but saw every Clan as such no matter if they were Wolves or Jade Falcon, and troops that just want to keep on fighting, not necessarily solely for economic gains.

Fighting is very realistic (for an SF setting that is) - effects of all those high power weapons are felt by each and every battlemech. There are a lots of pretty interesting combat set pieces here and I have to wonder how does anyone manage to recover from this level of losses. And I do not mean just weapons and mechas but pilots and mechwarriors. I am looking forward to Hour of the Wolf to see how does large scale battle looks like (in this one everything is given as "skirmish").

Very interesting side-story that will definitely play a major role in the future.

For fans of battletech highly recommended.

Generally speaking I love the BattleTech books of Blaine Pardoe - they are so well written and really flash out this fantastic universe!

This book is also very well written (from a technical point of view):

However, my biggest issue with „Devided we fall“ was that the main storyline sounded very unrealistic and unbelievable to me. I just can‘t imagine high ranking military officers of the famous Wolf Dragoons acting in such a shortsighted and emotional way.

In the Inner Sphere, there are two Wolves

Clan Wolf decides to fulfill the dream of Kerensky and deny it to the Jade Falcons. But they can't do it alone. Can a lone Wolf bring Wolf's Dragoons into the fight as an ally? Nice novella, action, intrigue, a lot of fun. I especially liked the TRO and Battlemech sheet for the new Dominator mech that's included.

If you like Bttletech fiction - you will enjoy this. Small touches like having a descendant of one of the Black Widow company involved are a nice touch.
