Hot Mechanics, Mercenaries, and the Mafia...Oh my!

Brody "Brutus" Jackson isn't your average small-town mechanic. The garage where he works doubles as the headquarters for a ruthless team of mercenaries. They're all bosses under the hood, lethal behind the gun, and just shady enough to handle any job that comes their way. There's a reason they call themselves the Bang Shift. For a man with no memory of his past and no care of the future, it's the perfect arrangement.

Alexandria Collins knows how to pack fast and run thanks to years of FBI protection from the mafia. When her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, she finds herself stuck at a garage surrounded by the toughest looking men she's ever seen. That shouldn't be possible considering her past, but what troubles her more is the sexy-as-hell mechanic staring at her, awakening something she thought died the night her ex shot her.

When the feds hire the Bang Shift to protect the beautiful new lady in town, Brody is rocked to his core and not because of how much danger she's in or how hot she is. After all these years, he finally remembers something from his past...her.

When the past and present collide, no one escapes the wreckage.

I love a good story of a woman on the run... if she happens to keep running into a hot man with her vagina... REPEATEDLY... even better!!!

Alexandria Collins, now Xan, with the help of FBI is on the run with her son from her ex-husband. Every few years she is forced to relocate to keep her identity and location secret from her well connected *cough* mafia son *cough* ex-husband who tried to kill her when she turned evidence against him in order to escape the criminal life. In her latest relocation stint she is put into a small town. Her first introduction to that town is a car garage after her car breaks down. But well just look at who works at that garage all beefy guys... but the one who stirs her lady bits after 10-year-old dry spell is burly man with long blond hair and who rides a Harley.... purr purr come to this hot MAMA!

Brody “Brutus” Jackson is full time mechanic... full time part of secret mercenary group who helps out the government. He has no idea who he is and when Xan strolls into the garage he recognizes her but can't place her identity. This scares him as he knows he had a shady past and fears it will catch up to him. Evil... um... fate has other plans as he is assigned to protect her and her son. On top of just recognizing her all he wants to do is well DO her.

The chemistry and energy between the two is palpable and the more they resist the more they are attracted to one another. Oooh they try to run away from each other but it's not possible as all of Brody's protective Neanderthal instinct ROARING to protect the woman that he wants to make his.

This is a fabulous story filled with lots of adrenaline and 2 people who are just meant to be together. There is lotS of action and thrilling suspense. If you enjoy that danger factor (like I do) and twists in the story line this is a perfect story for you. The story is told through multiple POV so you get a well rounded story.

On top of a thrilling romance story we get a nice set-up for the rest of the series. The story spends just enough time to develop secondary characters that leaves you begging for more... which I am... beginning... gimme!!! gimme more!!!

3.25-3.50 RATING- I wasn't sure what to expect from this new to me author. Only two of my GR friends have read this book and one gave it a thumbs down while the other liked it. Since I picked it up for free and the blurb sounded like the guilty pleasures I usually like, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Overall, I'd say it was okay. The writing was solid. The story was definitely heavy on the sex, basically erotica, but was well done. The suspense portion of the story was pretty far fetched, even compared to the crap I normally read. I did get a little sick of the hero going back and forth being able to actual be with the heroine (even though given the circumstances it was understandable).

While I'm not going to rush out and buy the second book in the series right now, if I had the chance to borrow it or read it for free, I probably would. It's hard to find romantic suspense with a good steam level. Sometimes, I just need a good dose of dirty and this worked just fine for that.

Nope

Repeat after me: "S E L F R E S P E C T" what do we get? What the h in this book should've bought at the store. It is so weird to me that a person who gets literally kicked out of bed and is mistreated since the very beginning by a person, can so stupidly keep coming back for more. He tells you to stay away from him after kissing you, what do you do? Go to his house and sleep with him OF COURSE! He kicks you out of his bed right after fucking you, what do you do? Sleep with him again the next day OF COURSE! (While he tells you when you very breathily say "I I though y-you said this couldn't happen again" that he knows that he's an ass and probably will keep being one and treat you like shit over and over again) Receives information about how he's buds with the murdering raping psyco ex, what do you do? Confront him alone at his house, of course! FBI protection and your life be dammed! She can't think clearly people! And least of all! He admits that he may or may not have killed your baby.. What do you do? Get him to take care of your other kid in the hospital OOOOOF COUURSE!! What the hell is the matter with this woman? No wonder his ex wanted to kill her, seriously if I had to live with someone so empty headed I would want to kill them too.. Or myself, who knows. Dumbest h I've read in a while, she kinda ruined the book for me.

Okay.. So I kinda, sorta really liked this one ;D

It was definitely rocking the naughty hotness with no apologies here, but it was also sweet. Romantic at times. Nothing new as far as plot lines & characters go, but it was somehow refreshing still. There were some intense moments. A few major shockers too, that I did not see coming.
And Brody? *sighs* that man..

All in all this was a good read and I would recommend it. I'm curious about the next installment here.

Happy Reading :)

While the synopsis of the book really drew me in, in the end, I was disappointed and halfway through the book, I almost just wanted to delete it from my Kindle and move on to the next book. However, I persevered and here are the things that I didn't care for.

Brutus/Brody: Unfortunately, I didn't care for the hero that much. For someone who's supposed to be getting close to the heroine in order to protect her, he's not doing a good job. Instead, he spends 40% of the book or so giving the heroine mixed signals. Yes, he wants to have sex with her. No, he doesn't. Yes, he does. When they finally do establish a sexual relationship, he makes it clear that there's no commitment; yet, he acts as if he owns her. As for getting close, why not start by being a friend first? What's all this Me Tarzan, You Jane thing happening.

Xan: Granted, this poor woman hasn't had sex with a man for 12 years so I can understand why she'd be so attracted to Brody. But woman, have a little pride. Granted, Brody is not as bad as her ex-husband who tried to kill her, but Brutus kind of lived to his name. He had no finesse when dealing with Xan and for the most part, didn't really treat her well, especially after they first had sex, where he kicked her out. Yet, when the opportunity came for her to be with Brody again, she took it.

The Mercenary Group: Brody is supposed to be part of this Mercenary Group, but the group itself seems to be a joke. Assignments seem to be handed haphazardly without any real briefing. Brody goes off the reservation to get more information about Xan without consulting his boss? This does not seem like a well-oiled team to me.

The Colonel aka the Boss of the Mercenary Group: What an ass! Disrespectful to women and even encouraged Brody to have sex with Xan as a way to keep close to her. Of course, the way he was provided foreshadowing for who he really was, which is also part of the reveal at the end of the book.

Sex? Love?: After a few sexual encounters, they suddenly have deep feelings for each other? I can understand a little bit where Brody is coming from and that has to do with the reveal that happens later on in the book, but even with that, I still don't see how it constitutes as love. As for Xan, after a bought of consensual rough sex, the first thing she thinks about is it might be time to trust her heart to another man. I'm thinking that perhaps she needs more to go on before making that kind of decision, don't you?

Xan's Back Story: The whole gist of the story is that Xan's abusive, criminal husband was put away for attempting to murder her because she had given evidence of his criminal activities to the FBI. Unfortunately, the evidence somehow disappeared, but because she testified against him, she and their son became part of the Witness Protection Program.

However, the meat of this back story was a little confusing and sometimes a bit convoluted. I know there was something about the mystery of a rogue or dirty FBI agent being responsible for the disappearing evidence and that there were three suspects and there was some other stuff going on. For some reason, I had a hard time following that story arc.

There's also the connection that Brody had with Xan in the past that he didn't quite remember because he had amnesia. Add a plot point where he may have done something to Xan's daughter that seemed a bit out of character. While I thought Brody was a bit of a jerk, he didn't seem to have that dark of a nature to do what he supposedly did.

At least, who that rogue FBI agent turned out to be was a bit surprising, if not unexpected, so at least, that's something, if not enough.

In the end, this book did not do it for me and I was more than happy to read the final word on the last chapter.

I really enjoyed this book Brody was a great hero who was possessive and in just the right amount of denial at the beginning to be a jerk but then he made up for it in spades. Xan was a great heroine, her and her son had been though more than most will ever come close to but through it she was a great, smart, sweet heroine who was also a great mom. I started to get suspicious of who the bad guy was and though I got it correct the twists where great and the big twist that almost tears them part was a great storyline that just added more to this book. I think book two will be very interesting after this books ending. I am really interested to see the direction book two takes and just to read more from this series and this author.

Xan and her son have been on the run for years being hidden by the FBI since she turned in her husband and almost died. Now just moving to a new town with new identities their car breaks down. Brody doesn't remember his past but now he works with a group of men as a mercenary group hiding behind a the disguise of a group of mechanics. When Brody gets the job of fixing Xan's car and keeping an eye on her he wants none of it. The attraction is undeniable but whats worse is that he remembers her, even though he doesn't know where from that alone is trouble enough.

Being attracted to each other both find it hard to stay away and then they decide to stop trying to stay away from each other and take a leap. As their relationship grows and Brody tries to keep her safe word comes that her ex may be released from prison. As the group tries to get more information a link between Xan and Brody is found and it's the worst information possible and it will tear them apart. But something isn't quite right and when the real truth is discovered not only are Xan and her son in jeopardy but Brody and their future as well.

This was a great book, I haven't read many books like this so I really enjoyed how different it was for me. I do wish that the connection between Brody and Xan had been given more time because I liked the idea so much. I would have loved to have read more about it especially when Brody finds out. Overall this was a great book that opens to what seems to be a great new series.

DNF @ 35%.

I was really turned off with the way that single mothers are portrayed in this story. They seemed like sex hungry monsters that are dying for male attention. The h's neighbor is also a single mom, like the h, and encourages the h to let loose and have sex with someone. The h is attracted to the H and pursues him but he acts like a total a-hole. She throws herself at him and they have sex. The h, who had only slept with her ex over 10 years ago, acts so experieced. Immediately after the sex, the H tells her to leave. She feels awful but her neighbor tells her to just find another man. WHAT?!? Later, the H rescues the h and takes her back to his place. He kisses her and wants to have sex. When the h brings up what happened last time, that he acted like a jerk after sex, the H apologizes but admits he can't guarantee that it won't happen again. WHAT?!?! This is not for me.

**ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review by the girls and I at www.sizzlingpages.com **

Xan and
her son have been hiding, for the past ten years, from her ex-husband even
though he is currently in jail for trying to kill her.  With help from the FBI she's been able to
elude him and his family.  But, he's soon up for parole, and she's getting scared that once again she
will have to pick up and move again, and her life will once again be put in
danger even more so that he is out of jail.
The FBI is sure they can protect her - they have "people"
helping to watch her and her son - trying to keep them safe.

Out of
all the hot, sexy mechanics in the garage - who are also undercover mercenaries
- Brody is the one assigned to keep an eye on Xan.  He does not want this job - she's going to be
a problem, not only is he attracted to her, but she seems familiar to him and
he can't place her.  He keeps her at arms
length for as long as possible, until the attraction between them is too
much.  Between keeping her and her son
safe, falling for her, and slowly learning more about his past, and the people
in his present life that he trusted - everything seems to just blow up.

  I have to
say that I am a total sucker for a hot romantic suspense story - and that is
exactly what I got with Brody.  I loved
Xan.  She was a fierce, strong woman -
doing what was needed to keep her and her son safe from her ex.  Her son, Scott, was always her main concern -
and she was a great mom.  And Brody, he
was just the right amount of damaged - yet trying to make a better life for
himself.  He tried his hardest to stay
away from Xan, but the feelings and connection between these two was not to be
denied.  Brody always tried to be as
honest as he possibly could with Xan - even with the situation they were both
in.

As with
any suspense story - I don't want to give too much of the plot away - but I
truly loved this book.  The relationship
between Xan and Brody was scorching hot - and the story line had me guessing
until almost the very end who was telling the truth and who wasn't - and how
everyone was involved and what parts they all played.
I am so
looking forward to see which sexy mechanic the next story will be about.

Brody, Brody, Brody? This book contained it all -- a bit of action, a bit of suspense, and a whole lot of sexy. The characters in this story, Brody “Brutus” Jackson and Alexandria "Xan" Collins, are connected in a way that neither of them could have never expected. But more than that, the chemistry and passion between them is potent and combustible.

Xan is twelve years into her time in the Witness Protection Program. Her life is very different from the lavish lifestyle she used to have when married to her husband, Marcus Collins. After Marcus' abuse reaches critical levels, Xan knows that she has to leave him for the sake of her son. Knowing that Marcus won't just let her leave, she is given a get-out-of-jail free card that will allow her to escape. Xan finds a flash drive that provides information on all of his underhanded mafia dealings. Marcus is only second to his father in a power mafia family and Xan knows that turning the evidence over to the FBI is her only possible escape. Sadly, things don't go according to her plan and Marcus confronts Xan on the day of her departure. He assaults her and shoots her, at point blank range, in her temple.

Fast forward twelve years and Xan is moving to yet another location with her son Scott. Scott's a good kid and very protective of his mom. As they are nearing their final destination, Xan's ancient car decides to give up the ghost. Of course there is no cell reception in the remote area so she and Scott have to hoof the couple mile trip into the town. As luck would have it, they encounter a mechanic's garage on their way into the town and Xan solicits the help of the garage's owner, Colonel. Now, let me pause for a moment to say a word about Colonel. I hated him. Lord, he was completely misogynistic. He often referred to Xan as "that bit¢h" or "that little bit¢h" or some variation. Of course none of this is to her face but his attitude toward her is apparent. He is totally disgusting. Xan isn't immediately impressed by him but she does need his help. As Xan tells Colonel what she needs assistance with a bunch of big burly men come from the back of the garage, making their presence known. Living through the ordeal that she has, Xan is understandably wary of men. Although handsome in their own ways, none of the men do anything for her until she spies HIM. Him being one gorgeous, blonde, sexy Viking of a man, Brody Johnson. Brody is immediately caught breathless when he sees Xan but a spark of recognition makes him wary of her. See, Brody was found by Colonel several years earlier, hurt on a deserted road, and he has no knowledge of his life prior to that moment. But recognition fleeting runs through him when he looks at Xan.

Brody and the men at the garage are not just mechanics but mercenaries working for the government so Brody actually becomes Xan and Scott's silent watcher, although she doesn't know it. Xan and Brody engage in a bit of cat and mouse with Brody primarily being the mouse. He engages then retreats. Engages and retreats. Rinse and repeat again and again. His actions in that regard actually ticked me off a bit. Sure, he had his reasons which were only mildly ok; however, he sometimes treated Xan's feelings as if they were of no consequence to him. He was a bit of a jerk in the first order. Between him and Colonel, I wanted to do some junk kicking. LOL

The story moves at a very fast pace and definitely includes suspense and betrayal. Harbin actually does a good job dropping clues into the story about who the possible "bad guy" is although they won't be very obvious until his identity is actually revealed. I actually thought that part of the story was well done.

The part of the story that I didn't exactly care for was the easy flow of confidential information. First, Xan tells Roxie, her neighbor and new girlfriend, all about her life and what caused her to be in WitPro. Sure, Roxie overheard a call between Xan and the agent in charge of her case but I have to believe that there is a protocol for handling that other than telling all. This happened between Xan and Brody as well. When she pinned him in about his background and wanted to know who he was, he said he shouldn't tell her but then ends up telling her everything. Again, no protocol for what to do when information is compromised? The drama was sprinkled throughout the story well although the plot felt mildly contrived when it is revealed who Brody was and why his life, post amnesia, was designed the way it was. It felt a bit over the top.

But overall, I enjoyed the story and would like to see more from the guys at the garage. Especially Roc (one of the other mechanics) who you will also loathe in the story. I loved Gage though so I want him to find a happily ever after :).

I have mixed feelings about this book. It had some interesting and intense moments, but most of the time it felt like it was written only to satisfy writer's need to write sexual fantasies. Nothing wrong about that, but as a suspense-romance book it didn't work. If there existed genre called erotic-suspense then this book would belong to there.

Goog things
+ The story wasn't as foreseeable as I dreaded. It had some surprise moments in it, even though I figured out who was the bad guy among other black sheep quite early on.
+ Xan was okay female character. She knew what she wanted and didn't hesitated to have it. Mostly I liked that she didn't blush whatever Brutus did to her. So basically she had the right attitude towards sex (always a good thing!).

Weak points
- As I wrote earlier, it had too much sex in it. And because this was suspense novel, all that sex didn't fit well in it.
- The yuck-moment came, when Xan thought about sex with Brutus when standing next to her son. I know that even parents have sex (*gasp*) and think about it but I just wished Xan would have done it in some other time. Not nice to read how she was dripping wet and at the same time her son was next to her. Definitely a yuck-moment there.
- All the boys in the garage had little bit too much testosterone in them. I know some men are territorial but enough is enough.
- There were some moments when the story didn't flow and it became boring in time to time.
- One thing struck me odd and I still didn't really got it. If Xan was on the run ans tried to hid from her ex-husband, why she tried to hide in a little village? Would it be better to move in a large city (you know, more people around etc)?

This story was here and there okay and enjoyable, but sex suffered inflation. As an erotic reading this will be just the right book. For me? Not so much, 'cause I wanted to read suspense romance novel with traumatic female and strong male character.

So, 2.5/5 stars.

I really liked the synopsis of this book and love the series title.

Alexandria Collins aka various other alias but now known as Xan, has been under FBI protection for the last ten years. Her mafia boss ex-husband tied to kill her after he found out she was to give evidence against him. She has constantly moved from town to town to keep ahead of any mob Intel to find her. It’s on one such move that her car breaks down and she finds herself at a local garage where all the men working there are hot, but the one that takes her eye, Brutus (aka Brody) has a massive impact on her. When she finds herself in the cab of the tow truck with him the intensity of something between them cannot be denied.

Brody works secretly as an outsource unit for the FBI under the cover of being a mechanic at the garage, as do all the group. Brody has gone through a trauma in the last decade which resulted in amnesia he has never regained. When he sees Xan for the first time he can’t help but feel he has seen her before. When his boss, Colonel puts him on duty as her protector, Brody is loath to take up the task, being as it would put her in close proximity to him which would be hard to fight off the intense attraction to her and also what is this feeling that he knows her from?

The erotic episodes between the pair were steamy and hot. I would have liked to feel more of the connection that is spoken about and for them to get to know one another upfront to aid this connection. But none the less it was an engaging love dance the pair frequented.

The suspense element was well conducted and I did not guess who the spy in camp was, there was, however, a whole lot of agents names being thrown about to keep the reader off track. I didn’t feel the amnesia storyline was really needed and that Brody’s past was portrayed as out of character for him. I can’t really divulge that as it would give part of the story away.

Overall a good romantic suspense that was an enjoyable read. Three and a half stars.

I made it more than halfway through which is a new kind of record considering I had so many issues with this book it's not even funny. This woman rises up from the abuse her ex-husband inflicted on her for years, goes to the FBI and testifies against him. After being shot in the HEAD. That kind of sh*t takes cojones. Not everyone has them. Not sure I would in the same situation. So after years on the run and raising her son alone and again showing a great deal of strength, she meets this guy Brody and pretty much loses her brain. That's how I see this bull crap anyway. After 12 years of self-denial, she meets Brody, they kiss, he treats like shit, she goes back, they have sex, he kicks her out of his house...are you seeing a pattern here? Like her getting hurt after he gets what he wants? Like him treating her like cow dung every time they're not having sex? And then, after only having had sex two other times and her saying she doesn't trust him, they have anal sex. Anal sex. Something she's afraid of because of her husband. But she let's him do it. And then he spanks her too. Are you kidding me?? It got nothing to do with the anal sex in itself. It's about seeing a strong woman, who is on the run from the MAFIA, turn into this insecure mess with no self respect because this guy she meets is hot. He's not attentive or nice. He's not her friend. Yeah, he's secretly protecting her but she doesn't know that so...her decisions regarding him don't make any damn sense. They make her stupid and naive. They also make her incredibly exposed because he could be a bad guy. She doesn't know sh*t about him. And you're telling me a woman running from the Mafia for the last 12 years is just gonna trust some a**hole because he's hot? I might've even accept that if she didn't have Scott to protect but she does so this is all bull crap and just...bad writing. I also felt a sudden need to throw up every time Brody opened his mouth. Sorry.

Favorite Quotes:

“She really needed professional help. The man was obviously not interested in her, and here she was still panting over the guy as if he were dipped in Hershey’s chocolate.”

“Oh God. She was going to cry at the concern pouring from him. She felt a sob work its way up her throat, and she did her best to squash it. Crying during sex would make him disappear faster than cake at a Weight Watchers meeting.”

“He wasn’t worthy of her, but she’d always be the other half of him.”
“She was air for long-submerged lungs. Water for a man dehydrated. She was everything to him, and even though they didn’t have a future together, he’d love her forever.”

“Xan had never felt this kind of attention from another man. It was as if she were the most precious thing to him, as fragile as spun glass, and she didn’t know how to define- or even embrace-the warmth surrounding her.”

My Review:

I am new to this author but felt a love at first sight connection from the first page. Swoon! Brody is funny, sensual, has volcanically hot sex scenes, and is vastly entertaining and well-written, ahh perfection. I had a hard time putting this story down for even a short break to go do my civic duty and vote, or sleep, or answer my husband when he repeated the same questions and comment to me 4 times… in louder and more aggravated tones. I was enthralled from beginning to end, and once I finished, grieved the loss and instantly wanted more. I am totally addicted. Mandy Harbin writes romantic crack - and I am her junkie ho! I may have to join a support group.

I wasn’t sure what I expected when I started this book, but I think that is sometimes the best way to go into books.

I knew this was a romance book but I didn’t expect the amount of spice that was in this book. I loved it!

Brody has amnesia and can only remember the last decade of his life. That is until he meets Xan and he has a quick flash of her from his life before he lost his memory. He tries to stay away from her but is unable to as he has been tasked with making sure she stays safe.

Xan is the Ex-wife of a Mafia boss's son. She managed to get evidence to give to the FBI which allowed her to escape him with her son. They have been moved around every 2 years or so for the past 12 years.

I have a hate/love relationship with B rody. He tells her that he dean’t want anything serious or any type of commitment yet the moment he sees another guy flirt with her, he becomes possessive. I normally like possessive guys in books but due to what he was saying he wanted, just didn’t feel like it worked with Brody

Overall I enjoyed this book. The second half definitely had the suspense factor you’d expect from a book with mafia ties to one of the main characters. I’m definitely carrying on the series - I'm reading the 2nd book - and can wait to see who the other guys end up with. Im especially looking forward to Bear and Roxie’s story as we got some background to that in this book

I really liked this book. All the guys seem like they're going to live up to the name Bang Shift. This was about Brody and Xan. They made a great couple who could burn up the sheets. Can't wait to read more about these guys.

From its exciting opening prologue to the unrelenting suspense and feeling of foreboding permeating the rest of the story, readers are kept on the edge of their seats in this first installment in Ms. Harbin's Bang Shift series. As each of the members of this unique group of men are introduced readers will be drawn to each of them with their eclectic personalities and undeniable sexiness. These men may have questionable pasts but now work for the greater good doing what others aren't able to do and this story sets up this exhilarating premise beautifully.

When strong-willed Xan meets quiet yet formidable Brody, aka Brutus, sparks fly as he struggles to keep her safe from her violent past and the hand he may have had in it. Being married to an abusive criminal when she was young has left Xan leery of men and turned off her sex drive but one look at Brody flips all her switches and leaves her obsessed with him and wanting more. Against her better judgement she wants him and all the naughty promises his body offers which makes for steamy encounters and a crackling connection. Being with Brody has her letting down her guard and feeling carefree for the first time. Theirs is a complicated relationship though as the parole date for her ex gets closer along with the danger. Throughout it all Xan makes a surprisingly kick-butt heroine. She's no longer a victim and is willing to do whatever's necessary to keep her son from inheriting his father's violence.

Brody was once a bad guy, at least that's what his records show, as he has amnesia from a job gone wrong and can only remember the last ten years. He's a strong but quiet giant of a man unsure around women but who attracts them easily. The moment he sees Xan he feels a connection and is drawn to her like no other woman before her and though he tries to ignore it fate puts them in close quarters. As they get closer together, and he becomes an integral part of her family, the truth about his past starts coming to light as does the danger from her own past which brings out his protective instincts. Brody is an immensely appealing hero who's a bit rough around the edges but oozes sex appeal and is subtly charming in his own way. His hidden connection to Xan is a clever plot twist and adds an intriguing layer to the storyline.

From start to finish this story was an exciting and fast-paced thrill ride. The characters were appealing with the men of Bang Shift larger than life and drool-worthy. Each is unique in looks and temperament and give each reader their ideal book hero. Ms. Harbin has perfectly balanced the suspense and eroticism to keep readers glued to the pages and clamoring for this likable couple's much-deserved HEA. This was a great beginning to what promises to be an exhilarating and memorable series and I'm greatly anticipating the next installment!

Loved this book. I don't know why I waited so long to read this one. Grrrrrrrrrr I've never read one of this authors books before I can't wait to read the rest of this series now.

The story line is a very good one. The characters of the book are written well and I didn't see the twist at the end coming.

It keep's you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what's coming next. A real page turner.

It's full of a lot of hot steamy panties melting sexual content. Lot's of cursing like a sailor minus the sailor and suspense to the very end.

Well worth the money and highly recommended :0) If your the prudish type you wont like it so don't bother.

Brody “Brutus” Jackson isn’t your average small-town mechanic. The shop where he spends his days doubles as the headquarters for the mercenary group he works with. They jokingly call themselves the Bang Shift because the government contracts they take are the less savory ones, and they’re all just shady enough to do what’s necessary to get the jobs done. As far as Brody’s concerned, it’s the perfect arrangement for a man with no memory of his past, and no hope for the future.

Under FBI protection, Alexandria Collins and her son have been in hiding for ten years. When it’s time to move again, her piece of crap car breaks down and the man giving her a tow is the biggest, hottest guy she’s ever seen. She is determined to ignore the need her long-neglected body hungers for. After all, the last man she showed interest in put a gun to her head.

Brody thinks the skittish Xan is sexy as hell, but it’s not her hot body that has him rocked to his core. He knows her from somewhere, and in his line of work, that’s a dangerous thing. Following orders have never been this hard, but when he finds out she’s his next assignment, he will protect her at all costs … even if what she needs protection from most is him.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Who do you trust when the person who was supposed to love you tried to kill you? The answer -- no one. Xan Bradley doesn't trust anyone but herself and her son, Scott. She has a faith in the FBI agents assigned to keep her safe, but she knows that if her ex were to ever get out prison, all bets are off.

Brody "Brutus" Jackson is a loner, not necessarily by choice but by circumstance. His life essentially started over a decade ago when he awoke in a hospital with no memory of his past. Taken in by 'Colonel' Cal Sheppard, Brody has worked hard for him at his garage and in the 'side work' for governmental agencies.

When Xan becomes Brody's latest assignment, he becomes wary for the first time. He can't help but believe that he 'knows' Xan from somewhere but he just can't remember. Xan on the hand feels an instant attraction towards Brody and it scares her.

The push pull of the Xan and Brody's relationship is very realistic and the added mystery keeps the story interesting. I was surprised by the twists at the end and can't wait to read the next book in this series.

**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**

Brody is super action packed, filled with suspense, love story. I loved it. From page one there is action that flows the whole way throughout the read. I was so invested in these characters. There was laughter, and crying. At times Brody and Xan's relationship or what there was of a relationship was heart breaking. Xan's back story was intense.

This line had me cracking up.

"Crying during sex would him disappear fast than cake at a Weight Watchers meeting."

I loved the intensity that Brody did everything. He was very overwhelming at times and so sexy. The chemistry between the MC's was definitely HOT! Some of those sex scene...wow. I totally didn't see the "who done it" coming. I kept guessing but was totally wrong. I love that about a read. Love when the author can keep me guessing and bust out a surprise.

I can't wait to read more about Hunter in the next one!

Review for Nocturnereads.com

This story is chockfull of Suspense, Romance, and steamy Erotic sex scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails, laughing and changing your panties! I LOVED it! I was up until the wee hours of the morning because I could not put my kindle down.

Xan is an incredible character, to experience what she has gone through and not given up, takes amazing courage. Brody a.k.a Brutus (fans self), I just want to pull him out of this story and keep him all to myself. That man is sex on a stick and will no doubt be my Matthew Mcconaughey (wink wink) for a very long time.

The climax of this story is heated and the who-is-it suspense is perfect. Great job Ms. Harbin! I am putting this on my reread shelf, and I will be looking into Ms. Harbin’s other writing.

On a side note, I love the guy on the cover...he is perfect! This chick looks a little young for the character but the guy first perfectly in my imagination.

I always enjoy starting a new series which involves Alpha males protecting the innocent, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to read and review Brody (Bang Shift book 1).

The mix of high drama and suspense, with plenty of twists, and some foreshadowing of who may get their story next, was highly entertaining. The interludes of hot, chemistry laden passion, which seemed inevitable from the start, were very well written. And seeing what happens next in future books is something I am looking forward to discovering. If you like your romance hot, and tinged with a touch of danger and intrigue, then this may be just what you should read next!

2.75 Stars. Mildly entertaining and technically well written with few mistakes. Unfortunately, the male main character pissed me off. He spends ages having sex with Xan and then pushing her away in the most callous way available at the time or avoiding her (because that's the most grownup solution)... up until he has a sudden personality transplant and starts going on about hearts, souls and eternal love. Oh, and that territorial bullshit? He punishes her for getting dressed up for a night out. With anal sex. Great change from the abusive husband. Brody does express some slight concern when she tells him she won't be able to sit down for a while (but justifies his actions by how much they turned him on). What a gentleman. Plot wise...tons of build up, but the resolution takes barely 3/21 chapters. Definitely a romance, not a thriller.

Xan Bradley or Alexandra Collins as she was once known is in Witness Protection and moving with her son to a new location in Arkansas. Her car has issues and she is forced to walk and finds an auto shop where she meets some interesting mechanics, including Brutus. Brody “Brutus” Jackson and his associates are more than just mechanics. They belong to a secret mercenary group that works for the government.

Brody is assigned to watch over Xan and her son. Brody feels he recognizes Xan but he has some memory loss from years before and can't place her. In fact, he can only remember the last 10 years of his life.

This is a new author to me. But it won't be the last. I liked it. It wasn't one of those WOW books but it had the right ingredients that made the book entertaining to me. I am interested in reading the rest of the series.

Best thing about this book was the cover. Bored to tears on this one. Constantly restating thoughts, reasons and reactions EVERY chapter. I mean every flippin' chapter. As if the first 50 times explaining why Xan (variation of Alexandria-says it all, yes?) is afraid to trust men didn't imprint. When I was half way through the book, and it was stated again, right after she went out to a honkey-tonk bar in a see-through tank and thigh-high leather boots, I was done. I only finished it because I was up late and just wanted to read myself to sleep. Plot was hokey, steam was limited to one major step on the wild side, and the rest was pretty standard. Climax was okay for the book itself but nothing to write home about. Nothing to make me want to continue the series in the least.

I love my romantic suspense, I really do but I was so disappointed with this book, it held so much promise from the blurb but it fell completely flat. Totally ridiculous pacing, the male characters had no redeeming qualities at all and the lead female came across as childish and weak. Very frustrating. :(

At sixteen Alexandra “Xan” Collins thought she had met the man of her dreams when she ended up pregnant and he whisked her away from her troubled life and married her but it was the beginning of her nightmare.

Ok

Actually, for erotica, this story has a great plot, with twists and turns that totally blinded me to the final denouement of the action. The guys at the garage pulled me into their banter and the unspoken bond among them all.

I read this book under it's previous title Darkest Sin. I really liked it and was hoping it would become a series.
