His Pursuit. My Denial. Our Collision.

You could say Cole Carter was single-minded in his desires and needs. When he saw something he wanted, he went after it. And the thing he wanted most in this world was me.

Trust had never come easy. Perhaps that’s why when he pursued me, I refused to entertain the idea of letting him in.
Why would I allow a boy two years younger than me access to my secrets and insecurities? Why would I give him those parts of me I’d kept locked away?
The answer is simple.
He never took no for an answer. He wormed his way inside my soul, infecting me with his entire being. And I was lost from the moment he set his sights on me.

Our path was littered with broken promises and deceit. Even through all the heartache and the world fighting to break us apart, I thought we would survive the storm. Only now I realise that was all a fantasy. The boy I thought would give me everything. Well, he left me with nothing at all.

A coming of age, second chance MF romance set in Sarah Bailey's Dark Universe.

Our Darkest books are a series of interconnected standalones. There are a mixture of MM and MF couples and they all have HEAs.

Author Note: I recommend reading The Devil’s Syndicate series if you want to see Cole’s parents’ journey to their happy ever after.

Absolutely brilliant.
Okay firstly I was a massive fan of Sarah‘s series called the Devil Syndicate. And I was over the moon when I found out she was writing books about the children that Ash, Eric, Xavier, Quinn and Rory had together. It was great just reading about them again and just to see how their life is continued after the series ended. It just gave me a wonder Feeling, like coming home.

Okay in this book we read about Cole who is the son our Rory and Ash.
From the beginning we find out that Cole has had very strong feelings for a girl that he goes to school with Meredith since he was 11 years old. The issue is that Meredith is two years older than him but that has never stopped Cole from knowing that this girl is the woman that he wants to see his future with. Now that he has just turned 16 he feels that he is legal and he can make his feelings known to Meredith. Meredith is also best friends with his older brother Raphi Meredith isn’t sure although she can’t lie to herself and say she hasn’t had a crush on Cole. She struggles with the age difference and doesn’t want people gossiping about her as she is very self-conscious after an event that happened. Meredith is a redhead and she has been picked on for it for most of her life really. So when Cole tells her he likes her she’s beautiful she really struggles and thinks it’s a joke at first but knowing Cole the known bad boy she knows he wouldn’t make this up.
Their relationship starts slowly but the connection they have is just magical. And Meredith makes him work for their relationship not letting him kiss her until she’s ready and Cole is just amazing he doesn’t do anything that she doesn’t allow. They will be their firsts. Their first for everything and they have that together. But then something happens something that breaks Meredith.
Then the story picks up two years later and all I will say is that Cole has a lot of hard work to get his woman back but when things start going wrong around them and they are pulled in to this world that they thought was left behind it will just prove if they are strong enough to be together.

Outstanding couldn’t put it down brilliant!!!!!! I wanna sing from the top of the trees that this is just a fantastic book. Absolutely couldn’t put it down and I was so lost in the story. And my heart went out to both of them because I could see what they felt I could feel it it was like I was swimming in their feelings and I didn’t want to stop!!! Saying that I can’t wait for the next book.

Our Darkest Path by Sarah Bailey is the second entry in the interconnected standalone “Our Darkest” series of dark romance novels. You could possibly consider it “stand-alone”, meaning that you can enjoy each book without being invested in the series…however, the characters, themes, and story lines will be recognizable from other books in the series AND the greater depths of the Sarah Bailey universe. Meredith Pope is an 18 year old girl nearing her graduation in what we sloppy Americans would call high school. She’s smart, creative, uniquely pretty, and a bit brash until you get to know her. Two years younger than her is Cole Carter, son of a prominent member of the Syndicate family and an all-around cocky shit. Growing up in a unique family, Cole has learned to think mostly for himself and he knows one thing more than anything else…. that Meredith will be his.

This novel is….long. Broken into four parts, the story examines the roller coaster ride of a relationship between two people, and how love alone is hardly ever enough to keep a romantic prospect together for a lifetime. A unique theme explored is the notion that definitions of a happily ever after will change over time. What may start as an age gap concern can be healed with time…but what about family loyalty? A family can evolve and grow and learn to love all the same…but what of a dark history coming back to haunt them? We can run away from our problems…but what can we do to secure the future?

While there’s no requirement to have ever read a Sarah Bailey book to enjoy Our Darkest Path, long time readers of her work will be handsomely rewarded with not only new content on old characters, but some new themes as well. Cole comes from a unique family, with essentially four father figures, a mother, and several siblings housed under one roof. Bringing friends or any love interests into this family would be difficult to say the least, especially with the baggage of their dark past. Meredith and Cole learn to eventually work as a couple due to their need to be with each other, knowing that they could never really love anyone else even if they wanted to. We get to see Meredith struggle with the loss of a relationship twice, and sharing that pain among the protagonists from Book one of this series. We didn’t know much about Meredith’s problems in the first book, as at the time she was seemingly a background character to Rhys’ personal issues in his pursuit of romance. We (as the reader) see Meredith crying and miserable around the happy ending of the last novel, something we were previously blissfully unaware of. This is a powerful example of how we in the real world like to think of ourselves as the main character in our own story. It’s important to consider those around us, and carefully remember that our moments of happiness won’t also magically solve the problems of those we love and care about.

Verdict: Our Darkest Path by Sarah Bailey is another strong dark romance novel that digs even deeper into an already vast literature universe. Dark elements are referred to, but for the most part this story is about young love being challenged, succeeding, getting challenged again, and the hard facts that can keep a couple from lasting happiness. The story gets very dark towards the end, but the fact that 3/4ths of the novel didn’t have much of this makes the climax that much more of a proper event. What steals the show to this reviewer however is the eventual rejection of these dark themes by the characters themselves. Nothing from anyone’s past is questioned nor regretted, but there’s a loving and tactful expression by the love interests that the next generation of an infamous family needs to be set and held to a clearer moral code. There’s no fear of an end to the darkness inside this universe I’ve come to know so well however, as this novel has reminded us that we’re only the protagonists of our own narrow recital.

Special thanks to Sarah Bailey for providing an advance review copy of Our Darkest Path to TehBen.com. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

Another amazing story...

This is the second coming of age book in this series and I adored every bit of it. Cole is the son of one of my favorite characters from the authors other series, The Devils Syndicate. Getting to know him and learn more about the family was wonderful but his dynamic with Meredith was what sealed the deal. This is a must read!

If you haven't started the "Our Darkest" series yet, you have no idea what you're missing. Did you read "The Devil's Syndicate" series? If yes, you'll be excited to know this series is the follow-up about Ash, Quinn, Xavier, Eric, and Rory's children. IKR!!! If you haven't then you're in for an astonishing ride!! Do the children pay the price for their parents' sins? That seems to be an age-old question through time and I'm sure Cole and Meredith are wondering the same thing in their journey. You see, Cole, Rory and Ash's son, has loved Meredith for five long years. She's two years older than he is and it doesn't help that everyone keeps looking at him as if he's still a kid, but he's NOT. He just has to convince Meredith of that. Will they ever catch a break? Dark elements pull them into a scenario of blackmail and danger. This storyline broke my heart and had me in tears. Sarah Bailey always has a way of shaking things up, tearing everything down to the solid core, and then after, what seems like a long, hard fight, lovingly puts them back into a new and blossoming configuration that just melts my heart. This was a great read that had a superb ending.

This is the story of Meredith and Cole. Cole saw Meredith when he was eleven and just knew she was it. Meredith was more reserved and not one to trust easily. Cole got under her skin, but then there was blackmailing and danger so to keep Meredith save he broke her heart. Will they be able to rebuild what they had, will the family help. This is the second book in the Our Darkest series, and it was a hard read for me. The pain that Meredith felt and the way it was written was just perfect. I loved the characters and it was cool that these are the children of the characters from other books. I thought this was a great read and I did enjoy the ending.

The story is divided in four parts. It's about Meredith and Cole. He wants her, despite her being two years younger. He doesn't care he just wants to make her his.
I loved the dual first person point of view of the story, which is always a deal breaker for me. Both voices, Meredith and Cole were very good to read, the characters were developed, the story was good and it made sense. I really love this author.

This is the second book in the Our Darkest series. I have neither loved or enjoyed a Canadian snow storm so much. This provided the perfect reason to stay at home, curled and cozied up to devour this amazing book. I finished the book and had to step away as my initial review thoughts were scattered and had the potential for spoilers. So this review will be simple and on the plainer side in this: if you enjoy a twist or twenty, a hint of darkness, a pinch of heart break and a whole heaping cup of steaminess, this is your story! I cannot recommend strongly enough but this is a must read book. Enjoy!

This book is about Rory and Ash’s son, Cole. Cole is secretly in love with Meredith Pope who is older than him by two years. Meredith thinks he’s to young for her, but there’s something about him that draws her to him. Cole sets out to win Meredith but the journey is not as easy as it seems. With lies, heartbreak, and obstacles at every turn this story kept me hooked and turning the pages until the very end. A truly enjoyable read and I’m so looking forward to reading the rest of the other children’s stories.

I'm so surprised and happy that Sarah is writing stories for the children of Ash, Quinn, Xavier Eric and Rory from the devil's syndicate. Cole is Ash and Rory's son. He is sixteen and in love with 18 year old Meredith Pope. Has been for 5 years! Now I know this sounds far fetched but look back and remember how honest, true and real you felt when you were that age! So Cole sets out to win Meredith's heart but the journey is a tough one. Hearts are broken, events cause rifts and obstacles that seem unsurmountable. This story broke me and then mended my heart. I can't wait to read the other kids stories.

Cole and Meredith are just kids when they meet in school and even though she is a couple of years older them him Cole knows what he wants and it is her. So many things are working against them falling for each other, yet they do. With everything they must endure, will they relationship survive it? Fast-paced intense read with loads of drama, suspense and steam. Great characters with intense chemistry and great depth. An entertaining story that really draws you in. I loved it.

I loved The Devil’s Syndicate series and was really excited to learn that Sarah was going to write stories about the children. I was also extremely curious as to how the new series would go and what all it would entail - hardships and intensity-wise - since their parents’ series was super heavy. I was pleasantly surprised and glad that I took a chance on this book. I truly enjoyed it and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the children’s stories.

This book belongs to Rory and Ash’s son, Cole, and starts while he is in high school with his first love interest (whom he’s been secretly in love with since he was a bit younger) Meredith Pope who is two years older than him. In everyone’s eyes, including hers, he is still a child but there’s just something about him that draws Meredith to him like no other. With Cole’s unconventional family and their dark past and secrets, his habit of getting into trouble, their age difference, Meredith’s unapproving brother, and her own family drama they definitely had their work cut out for them to have any kind of relationship at all.

What started out as innocent first love takes a dangerous turn when Cole’s family’s past and secrets put him and in turn Meredith through their connection right in the middle of blackmail and death threats. Promises were made and broken leaving deceit and immense pain in their wake. Cole and his family will risk it all again to protect their family and give him and Meredith the happy ending they deserve. With the lies, heartbreak, and broken promises Cole and Meredith have a long journey but the end is beautiful and rewarding.

If you’ve read Sarah’s Devil’s Syndicate series, or even her Corrupt Empire series, you know the intense emotions, high drama, and angst that her stories encompass. This book is no different – it starts with young love then moves through years of suffering, longing, secrets and betrayal, life and death stakes, as well as deepening feelings into their adulthood, steamier romance, and family drama that eventually all wrap up in a happy ending.

I loved the Devil’s Syndicate Books! You should read them first. This is Ash and Rory’s son Cole’s story.
The rest of the gang/family appear as well and are a super great/ close family. They appear to some different for having several fathers and 1 mother but, they live as one household and a super tight unit.

Cole first saw Meredith when he was 11 years old and fell super hard for her. He waited until he was 16 years old and legal to pursue her. Meredith is 2 years older that Cole and he never let that stop him. They had some trouble with Meredith’s brother right away and Cole broke her heart by walking away thinking her bond with her brother and his age made a difference. When trouble came knocking with the Mafia after they were back together again, Cole left Meredith for another 5 years breaking her heart to protect her the love of his life. These two are soulmates who love each other so much and keep getting their future interrupted. This was such a great and amazing read that I could not put down! I cannot wait to read Raphi’s story next!

Cole has loved Meredith since High School. She's two years older than he his but he doesn't care. It seems that Meredith doesn't care about the age difference there is just something about Cole that draws her like a moth to a flame. Everyone feels he's still a child and Cole deep dark family secrets, his habit of finds all kinds of trouble, Meredith's family is just as disapproving and her family drama. These two have their work cut out for them trying to have any kind of relationship at all. They have so much to deal with but they tend to stick together. Will they be able to survive what their families are throwing their way? I received an ARC copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

True Love's Path is Never Smooth

Cole Carter fell for Meredith when he was just eleven. He waited until he was sixteen to actively pursue her. The problem was she was eighteen. The fact that he was still a child when the potential for trouble given his family's past caused them issues. Could his love for her survive?
I have now read all of the stories about this family. All are fantastic.
Cole is determined, honourable and devoted. Meredith grows because of his love. Seeing his parents, a quintet, again is wonderful.
Terrific characters, a thrilling storyline and no punches pulled. Plus , as this is Sarah Bailey, steamy romance. Highly recommended.

Their love is one for the ages, overcoming all odds

Our Darkest Path is the second book in this series and is the first I have read. I have read a number of other books by Sarah Bailey but this story is fantastic. There is enough drama, angst and love to fill your entire library with and then some. Right from the start you get sucked into the story of Cole and Meredith and you just can't put it down. The time flies and before you know it it the sun is coming up and you still can't put it down. I am looking forward to continuing this series.

I usually love everything I’ve read from this author but this was a bit of a miss for me. The writing was just as good as expected, but the age of the main couple didn’t mesh in my mind as the storyline progressed.
This second chance romance was filled with intensity and depth but Cole was sixteen when he first connected with the love of his life Meredith, who was eighteen at the time.
The age difference would have been negligible if they had been older, but Cole kept referencing his deep love for her five years prior. There was a bit of awkwardness in the fact that he was eleven and Meredith was thirteen when their love started to blossom.
There were instances where I could ignore their young age as the author seemed to make their love timeless, but it was brought up again and again how Cole was eleven when he fell in love with Meredith.
Just two short years pass when they reunite for their second chance. Their ages were now Cole’s eighteen to Meredith’s twenty. And the deep reason Cole broke her heart? Meredith’s brother Jonah did not approve. Huh.
Added drama with the villains who actually plotted evil to keep this couple apart, with a pretty satisfying conclusion that ended in their HEA.

Merideth likes to go by Mer. She fell in love with a boy who broke her heart. What she doesn't realize is that he's loved her longer than she even knew he existed. She hadn't found the person who wanted to prove they were worth her time but Cole did. He pushed his way into her life and made her know he was serious about her. Will she let him through her walls or turn him away because of her sad past?

This story took so many turns that I wasn't expecting at all. I wasn't certain of it at first but wow did it work out amazingly. Cole being possessive had my heart beating fast. Her feeling so horrible that she needed to hide their relationship hurt. Her past has changed her. She hides behind a mask. Him breaking through her walls was beautiful to read. Coles family is from her earlier series "The Devil's Syndicate" and they are even more amazing now. Rhys and Aaron are great friends. Jonah proved to be a great brother. I hate her mom and grandmother. The ending and the sign was perfect. I was pleasantly surprised.

And they rode off into the sunset...

OMG, I loved Cole and Mer's story so dang much! I laughed, cried, and swooned. To find your person, true love from the start, well, it warmed my damn heart. These two had to conquer several obstacles to get to their happily ever after path. It broke my heart. And oh mercy, the twists. This author is notorious for them. Be warned. When Cole and Mer finally got to their HEA, it was simply sweet.

Ms. Bailey never fails to tell a riveting story. She's on my must-read list.

I enjoyed this new "Our Darkest" story. I was worried this might not be a stand alone read since I had not read the first one. However, it is pretty much a stand alone story. It is related to the "The Devil's Syndicate" story since it's about the children from that story. This is Cole and Meredith's story. It's a good read that is interesting with strong characters. Their journey to happiness has many obstacles and challenges to overcome. Very good read!

I loved the series from which this story has evolved. It was a very welcome surprise and I loved revisiting this dark and dangerous though captivating world crafted by the author. The story was enjoyable to read though some of the timing and reasons behind actions were hard to understand only because it stretched my imagination. I hope to read more books in this exciting and entertaining world.
